Earth’s Carbon cycle and Temperature
Slow Carbon Cycle:
Carbon takes around 100 – 200 million years to move through rocks, soil, ocean and atmosphere.
10 - 100 million metric tons of carbon move through Slow Carbon cycle per annum.
10,000 – 1,00,000 million metric tons of carbon move through Fast Carbon cycle per annum.
Earth naturally absorbs (by oceans and forests) and emits (undersea volcanos and hydrothermal vents) around 100 billion metric tons of carbon per annum (roughly equivalent to 400 billion tons of CO2).
CO2 Emissions from fossil fuels in 2023: Roughly 40 billion metric tons.
Ratio: CO2 Emissions from fossil fuels amounts to just 10% of natural CO2 emission and absorption by earth.
Moral
Overall carbon cycle, over a very long term, is expected to maintain a balance, which keeps earth’s temperature to remain to be relatively stable.
However, over a relatively shorter time period, earth fluctuates between ice ages and warmer interglacial periods, where, parts of carbon cycle may even intensify the short-term temperature changes (which, we keep experiencing now), and thereby significantly affecting the stability of earth’s temperature.
Nature will take care the balance of carbon-cycle as well as temperature on its own, but very slowly.
Leaving aside altering earth's climate, Have we understood the nature (including the 'coupled' effect of Milankovitch theory: eccentricity/obliquity/precession; cirrus clouds effect; albedo effect; urban island effect; El Nino effect) in a single (human) life span? Even, if it is so, whether, all the fundamental laws remain valid for such a complex system?
Even, if smarter one manages to convince that the earth's climate system be modelled precisely, how will the model results be validated (in the absence of any future data)??
If not, how do we forecast? [Only recent temperature data remains to be satellite based, while we used thermometers (which just measures the degrees of hotness) earlier. Before 1624??]
Do we have a well-defined 'Conceptual Model' and its respective 'Mathematical Model' (assuming that we have a super computer for numerical model) that forecasts
how exactly climate change
will affect
extreme precipitation events
and sea levels?
Which conceptualization
has led to the prediction that
CO2 emissions from fossil fuels,
particularly from oil & gas industries
have led to the rise
in mean global temperature?
Is there any specific
spatial and temporal scales
over which
these climate models work?
With 428 ppm as on date,
feasible to distinguish
the CO2 emissions
from various sources?

A bizarre question. Mathematics (in fact, Geophysical models using mathematical approaches) based models are used to predict future climates for different climate regions on Earth. They can be validated based on back casting! Which is seldomly done, by the way! A model altering climates on Earth? That requires more explanation from your side, to actually get a grasp, on what you have in mind? With which boundary conditions? Not clear to me! Is it for you? I don't say it might be impossible, but just imagine what the boundary conditions would be to realize such a venture! We cannot even predict meteorological phenomena a month in advance! Let alone change climates on Earth! Honestly, would you dare to speculate on how this should be brought into the real world?

There are some problems with your concept framework as you hardly able to combine those five factors on the left side of your diagram. The framework also lack of key idea and main contribution. Ask yourself what you are plan to do, and what you wish to contribute? and why it is important. As Phd level thesis, more work has to be done on this framework.
This is only my personal opinion. I hope it can help.

I like Miro - I think there are lots of other options but in terms of getting started quickly and easily, it's hard to beat.
It's designed as an online whiteboard for collaboration - that you can share with others by sending them a link, (great for online teaching actually) but it's great just as a thinking tool to sort out your own ideas and then organise them visually.
I often screenshot what I've built and use that image in documents etc.
You can create a certain number of whiteboards free, but then need a subscription if you want more. They have a free educational license if you email them and ask - with proof of your educational-user status.
Canva and Figma are alternatives but Miro seems more intuitive to me.
Find it and have a play :-)

Question

If a study examines the interaction effect of X1 (a dichotomous variable) and X2 (a dichotomous variable) on Y, the mediating variable M plays a mediating role in the interaction effect, and the moderating variable W changes the classification of the independent variable X1 (e.g., from dichotomous to trichotomous). How is this conceptual model figure drawn?
Relevant answer
Answer
Drawing a conceptual model figure can help to represent the relationships between variables in your study visually. Here is an example of how you could draw a conceptual model figure for the study you described:
  1. Start with a box in the centre of the figure that represents your dependent variable, Y.
  2. Draw arrows pointing to Y from two boxes representing your independent variables, X1 and X2.
  3. Draw a circle or oval around the arrow from X1 to Y to represent the interaction effect between X1 and X2.
  4. Add another box representing your mediating variable, M, and draw an arrow pointing from M to Y, passing through the interaction effect arrow.
  5. Add another box representing your moderating variable, W, and draw an arrow pointing from W to X1.
  6. Label each box with the name of the variable it represents.
  7. Label each arrow with the direction of the relationship (e.g., positive or negative) and any coefficients or statistical measures (e.g., β, p) you are testing.
Here is an example of what the conceptual model figure might look like:
luaCopy code

Hi all!
I've been looking into the effects of pre-order promotion design on pre-order sales of videogames.
My IV"s are binary, 1 moderator (AAApublisher, referring to firm size) is binary, and my second moderator (Sentiment, low is negative, high is positive) is continuous. Sentiment has some missing values. My DV is number of pre-order sales, which I've had to log-transform due to its distribution.
I've attached my conceptual model.
When I make a simple linear regression model with only my IV's, the results suggest that they've got decent explanatory power of the DV, but when I add my moderators, these main effects disappear. As I understand, these moderators (and not my IV's) are actually the cause of the changes in my DV.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these results. Thanks!

Dear Bas Bar, I hope that I can shed some light on your negative loadings. It is well-known that the factors in the common factor model cannot be solved for uniquely even if the factor model fits perfectly and the factor loadings are known (see, e.g., Nicewander, 2020; Steiger, 1979, 1996). The unrotated model can be rotated with an infinite number of rotations without altering the model fit. This provides an indeterminacy in the model because no information in the data is available that can determine the best possible rotation for the factors. Therefore, positive or negative factor loadings may be arbitrary.
I once performed an EFA with the result that all items of one of the factors loaded negatively on this factor. When I used Promax rotation instead, all factor loadings were positive.

The framework is validated through interviews and then tested through surveys.
I am confused:
1. Do I mention that I developed the conceptual model with interviews BEFORE my methodology chapter, knowing I must provide my research questions at that stage, which is the standard sequencing?
or
2. Do I simply propose the research questions first, followed by the methodology, then the interviews which will feed into the conceptual model after the methodoloy?
My confusion is that the methodology is mentioning the interviews, yet I have conducted those early-on to develop the model.

I want to analyse the relationships using SEM. Is it possible or suggest any other alternative to conduct this analysis.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Kirti,
Of course, the model(s) of interest should be driven by your specific research question(s).
It sounds to me as if you could:
1. Evaluate two different models: (a) one with FinLit as a mediator, with some other variable as the target DV (and at least one IV beyond these vars); (b) one with FinLit as a DV;
The only problem with this approach is that you don't have a simultaneous test of whatever the mediation RQ is, coupled with whatever the FinLit = DV RQ might be.
2. Combine the models, so that, FinLit is in fact a target DV for one or more other variables, and it behaves as a mediator in that relationship.
The only problem with the second approach is you'd have to respecify it in at least two other ways to evaluate the mediation hypothesis vs. whatever the hypothesis of interest is when FinLit is the DV.
You'll have to decide which approach makes the most sense given your research aims.
Good luck with your work.

Answer
Hello Boris,
If all three variables are measured or observed (vs. latent), then ordinary path analysis or regression could be used to evaluate each hypothesis.
H1: Testing path EI -> EB (for difference from zero, and positive sign)
H2: Testing path SC -> EI (for difference from zero, and positive sign)
H3: Testing path of SC*EI -> EB (note: SC*EI is a product term, which you may wish to form by mean centering each variable before multiplying). For H3, you'd want to include direct link of EI -> EB and possibly that of SC -> EB so as to get the relative contribution of the interaction term compared to the direct influence of the constituent elements on outcome, EB).
This could all be specified in a single path model.
Good luck with your work.

Martijn Aa This design could be conveniently analyzed by using path analysis, which is available in software programs for structural equation modeling (SEM) such as lavaan (in R; free software), Mplus, AMOS, LISREL, EQS, OpenMx, etc.
Path analysis allows you to consider multiple IVs, DVs, and mediators in a single statistical model. It also allows you to conveniently test the indirect (mediated) variable effects for statistical significance. Many SEM programs have specific features for automatically printing and testing indirect effects (e.g., by using bootstrap confidence intervals as provided by, e.g., Mplus).

Dear David, I surely read your answer, but maybe I was not clear. I was supporting your statement that count variables are typically not suitable for OLS regression and hence not for PROCESS. And my second part referrered to that even if the dependent variables were unbounded, metric etc, i.e. ok for OLS regression, PROCESS would not be able to handle the (structural) model that the OP was asking for. PROCESS cannot handle several IVs and several DVs. It is only possible to specify one IV, one DV, two moderators, several mediators and covariables. If you meant this, I think this was not clear and your attachment do not directly refer to this topic.

//Unfortunately, I come across the following problem:

Dear Mr. Geiser, dear Mr. Gyamfi I am very greatful for your unexpectedly fast and comprehensive support.
I have done the following two approaches to improve the model fit:
  1. I covaried three error terms. Many thanks for the advice to have a look at the modification indices.
  2. Since no convergent validity was provided, I have considered the standard residuals and deleted the item with the largest deviation. Furthermore, I optimized the model by deleting all items with factor loadings below 0.7, if possible. In total, I removed five items from the model.
Thus, I now have a sufficiently fit model. According to some influential papers in the research field, CFIs and TLIs > 0.9 are interpretable as good fits.
  1. CMIN/DF: 2.236 ✓
  2. CFI: 0.952 ✓
  3. TLI: 0.94 ✓
  4. RMSEA: 0.066 ✓
Perhaps you can assist me with your expertise on the following issues:
  1. Two items have too low factor loadings (<0.7) in the constructs WR and EB. However I am not allowed to delete them. If I had deleted both underperforming items in each factor, the constructs would be statistically underidentified (min. 3 factors).
  2. No discriminant validity is given for the construct LEerw. The reason for this might be the particularly high correlation coefficient with HM. Higher factor loadings would help, but here I would need at least a loading of 0.94 in the deleted item.
  3. I could pass the cut-off values for all paramaters with deleting only three items instead of 5. Would you still suggest deleting all items that do not exceed the loading threshold of > 0.7?
What would be your advice, what conclusions do you derive from that result, how would you proceed?
The sample has 333 participants, was conducted in multiple countries, the participants have different backgrounds.

Dear All,
I am new to research and very little knowledge on using different approaches to a research problem. I present below my problem, please guide to resolve this.
I have initially framed an objective to identify the factors influencing the intention to use a technology using SEM. A conceptual model was framed using 12 variables based on literature review. The data collection began just before the pandemic situation (March 2020). Due to lockdown the data collection was slow and was completed in April 2021. Meanwhile, the circumstances in the area of my research drastically changed within a year. Now, I could find a lot of users of this technology and I feel that I could have measured the 'users' Satisfaction as well'. Recently, I found a lot of user reviews on this technology. My Supervisor is suggesting to add another objective to find "user experience" based on the User Reviews using Topic Modelling.
Is this approach correct? The first objective is of identifying the factors that influence behavior intention to use the technology using primary data (questionnaire tool). The second objective is to study the user experience in using the technology based on the users' reviews by extracting opinion features .
Is this approach a redundant one? Can I go with the second objective? If so, what's the justification should I give for adding the second objective ?
Please provide your advice/suggestions.
Thank you

your reasoning is definitely correct in the sense that your methods are indeed able to help you answer your research question. I would however say that if a method is 'good' or 'bad' depends on much more, for instance of your field of research and the level of experience of your intended audience (scientific, practicioners, background in NLU or not...). Since you mention a supervisor but also that you are new to research, I assume you are currently writing some form of undergraduate thesis. If that is correct and you have a page limit to stick to (say 60 pages or less), I would recommand to just select one method. It's always better to perform one analysis thoroghly than to lose your audience half way through your paper.
Good luck with you project!

Conceptual modeling of a Fractured Reservoir: Where are we heading towards?
1. Is it possible to secure the actual three-dimensional (and NOT the two-dimensional areal features - in the absence of ‘hydraulic-connectivity with the ensured connected paths of least resistance’) data on fracture attributes such as fracture-density, fracture-length, fracture-width, fracture-spacing and fracture-dip from a real field scenario?
2. If it is feasible, what would be the ‘scale’ at which, these details (fracture attributes) could be expected?
3. If the associated scale of the deduced fracture attributes remains much greater than macroscopic-scale, then, will it be feasible for us to deduce a reasonable REV (associated with the fractured rock reservoir) in order to consider the associated parameters/variables that will probably vary smooth and continuous so that the conventional calculus could be applied with ease? For such conceptual models, whether, stochastics (or the fractals) is ‘the only means’ to characterize the reservoir heterogeneity?
4. In fractured reservoirs, to what extent, the conventional hydro-static pressure and gravity would decide the resultant draining of oil – at the relatively later stage of the production cycle? Also, during the early-phase, whether the expansive force of the gas associated with the oil – will any more remain - the principle source of propulsive energy? Even, if it is so, do we really have a control over the expansion of gas – within the high permeable fracture - which will mitigate the velocity of oil; and in turn, which will try to suppress the frictional resistance? [Assuming that the velocity of oil within the high-permeable fracture cannot be so slow; and subsequently, the relatively higher oil velocity may not allow the gas to flow more rapid – unlike, as observed in conventional sandstone reservoirs.]

In my study, I have developed a conceptual model with 8 independent factors that MAY affect a dependent factor. I am still on the research design stage.
Each of the 8 factor will have many variables to be posed as questions to respondents.
Now I want to test this model. What should be the approach? Will all the responses need to be converted in a Likert scale to perform statistical analysis?
Please suggest some good thesis / research works where such model testing is conducted, so I can learn from similar works.
Relevant answer
Answer
What you have described is a Structural Equation Model (SEM), where the factors you predict will be assessed by a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). And yes, you can use Likert-formated items for this type of modeling.
However, eight factors is a high number for this kind of work, and it will generate the need for at least 3 items per factor. That will also create the need for a relatively large sample in order to generate stable estimates for the components in your model.

A study basically entails the following process:
First, comprehensively analysing the literature review, identifying relationships, developing a conceptual model, and proposing hypotheses;
Second, empirically testing those hypotheses to test the proposed relationships.
What basically such types of studies called as? Exploratory or descriptive study or a combination of both.
Please elucidate.
Relevant answer
Answer
There are two things to ask first:
If you have a model already designed and you want to find functions/characteristics of some group/object in the literature to map to the model then your study is descriptive. In other words, if you have a defined question/structure to collect data from the literature and describe according to the structure then it is descriptive. For instance, if you want to describe the traits of specific groups according to a pre-planned structure.
Else if your model is not yet conceptualized rather when you will be exploring the literature and find something to convert to a thought or idea then your study is explorative. It means that you have no pre-planned analysis and design structure or model rather you are starting as unplanned. During this exploration you may reach to a new thought and discovered new ideas. In this way, you are clarifying the research further and making a road to descriptive analysis.

Hello, for my master thesis, I am using smartPLS for my analysis. Attached you can see my conceptual model. ITU = DV, OPB and OPC = IV, VPC and PC = moderating variables. When I executed the PLS algorithm I get results, however, I don't get the R2 for the OPB. I figured out that this is because the OPB is not in my inner model. I would like to insert OPB in the inner model but I dont know how. Does anybody has a recommendation?
Relevant answer
Answer
R2 values are calculated for endogenous variables only. Your OPB variable is an exogenous variable. Therefore it cannot be calculated.

Hi everyone,
My MA-thesis focuses on the impact of Covid-measures on university students(in the Netherlands) with regards to experiences of loneliness, resilience and self-determination. I collected data for my mixed methods approach (convergent model) with an online survey (open and closed questions) and am currently in the proces of analyzing the 228 responses. Even though I have a theoretical framework that guides my research questions, my goal is also to let the data speak for itself since I do not know how the students truly feel (and what to find out).
(-sub question: can you make a conceptual model with a preexistent theoretical framework & grounded theory?)
I have checked the reliability of my scales (loneliness, resilience and motivation) and prepared these scales in SPSS. Now I just don't know what test to use (and how) in order to see correlations and possible causality between te experiences of motivation, loneliness and motivation in students.
Does anyone have some advice? Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
If your survey was cross-sectional, you will not be able to look into causality. However, you could have use multiple regressions to check what predicts motivation levels in students.

When developing new social science theories, we tend to rely on causal explanations so as to make sense of the reality around us. One can argue that people are natural-born storytellers and therefore we place so much emphasis on causal inferences. My question is whether you can provide any examples of social sciences theories that break this 'linearity bias'? What sort of alternatives to causal/linear/sequential explanations are available to scientists who wish to devise novel social science theories?
In advance thank you to answers.
Relevant answer
Answer
I have this feeling that "causal inference" and "natural-born storytellers" are so different from each other - already at the level of the underlying logic - that it is impossible to lump them both together under a single category. To use the conventional terminology at the moment: on the one hand there is 'evidence-based research' that presupposes the Western 'dualism' between facts and symbols, objectivity and subjectivity, going back at least as far as Descartes - the other is narrative, which presupposes a tale told by an individual person, of the 'this is what I have seen/experienced' type. This is after all the common heritage of the 'West', and most especially the Protestant North of Europe: this acceptance of a fundamental 'difference' between the objective here, the subjective there. From what you write, one has this feeling that what you call 'linearity bias' presupposes that this distinction between objectivity and subjectivity in the above sense no longer holds. Would you be prepared to elaborate on why you think this is so?

I am not sure what you mean by a conceptual model of these vein deposits. Are you referring to epithermal base metal and precious metal veins? See Sillitoe, 2010, Economic Geology, and references therein, for the relation of these veins to intrusive centers and porphyry Cu deposits, based on observations of actual examples. Also, Sillitoe and Hedenquist, 2003, review these types of epithermal veins, again based on the observation of many examples.

Solar cell is mainly represented as a current source with a diode connected in parallel. The circuit also consist of two resistances named as Series Resistance (RS) and Shunt Resistance (RSh). I want to know that why the equivalent circuit have resistances? Is there any practical significance or just a conceptual model?
Relevant answer
Answer
The one diode model mimics the I-V relation of one junction solar cells.
The solar cell is a real diode. A real diode has not only the junction voltage drop but also it has an ohmic drop on its body resistance which is the resistance of semicondcutor layers of the solar cell diodes.
As for the current it is found that there is a shunting current components shunting the junction diode of the solar cells. Physically it is microshorts in the junction or at the edges of the junction.
I would like that you see the book chapter:

Dear colleagues,
I’ve seen throughout my academic life a grueling discussion about when we should use propositions or hypotheses. Many researchers assume that when we formulate hypotheses, we are dealing with a measurable investigation (relationships between variables). On the other hand, when we elaborate on a non-measurable work (e.g., a conceptual model), we should formulate propositions.
However, other academics defend that hypotheses are related simply to a quantitative paper, while propositions are adequate for qualitative investigations. However, in areas as applied social sciences, we frequently need to embrace both perspectives (quantitative and qualitative). In the case, of a quali-quanti approach, we may need to use different methods that involve both, variables measurement as subjective interpretation. In this case, (and of course, if they are adequate to answer our research question), should we formulate hypotheses or propositions? Could you please give your thoughts about this question? Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards
Yves
Relevant answer
Answer
Yves Costa Netto - I think to answer your question, it is important to differentiate the terms "proposition" and "hypothesis". The main difference between the two is that a hypothesis must be testable and measurable, while a proposition deals with pure concepts for which no laboratory test is currently available. A proposition is a tentative and conjectural relationship between constructs that is stated in a declarative form. It is a statement about the concepts that may be judged as true or false if it refers to observable phenomena. When a proposition is formulated for empirical testing, we call it a hypothesis. Since preposition is a declarative statement it does not have to be true, but must be empirically testable using data, so that we can judge whether it is true or false.

Hello Dears,
Suppose that you're developing a technology acceptance model (TAM) in a case. Could you tell me about the effects and advantages of including "Several Independent Variables" into the TAM?
Bests,
Dashtpeyma
Relevant answer
Answer
The TAM model is used to explain and predict user acceptance of computer technologies. Basically, if an information system can help people do their jobs better, it is perceived as useful. Accordingly, the basic TAM model defines two variables: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, in order to quantify users' attitudes towards information technology. In this context, you can check as a TAM example on this link: https://commons.erau.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1354&context=publication
It is about TAM of the Information Systems Security that can help you to respond to your question.
Also, to be confident about the problem, you can use the independent decision variables but they should have significative ponderations. To determine the ponderation, I suggest using an experimental method like "Delphi" as a methodology for constructing your final model.

I am developing a Dignity in Care Questionnaire, based on the UK's 10 Principles of Dignity in Care, I have mapped the evidence in the literature to the 10 Principles (which is strong for most, but not all, Principles).
I have conducted a Delphi panel to gain consensus on the items and I have completed a pilot test.
I now have a questionnaire with 5 items for each Principle (= total 50 items).
I am undertaking this research for my PhD and had initially intended to undertake data collection (300 patients and 300 family carers) for EFA and then a further data collection (300 patients and 300 carers) for CFA. But the pilot study revealed it takes much longer to recruit participants. So now I must revise my plan.
I have enough time to collect 300 patient and 300 carer questionnaires, so I can do either EFA OR CFA, but not both. I thought I would need to do EFA, until I read this..... "So, if we began with Lang's conceptualisation of the structure of anxiety, and specifically wrote items to measure each of the three components, it would be better if we were to use CFA rather than EFA, and identified which items should belong to which factor." In Health Measurement Scales A practical guide to their development and use. Fifth edition. Oxford University Press. Streiner, Norman and Cairney 2015. p. 379.
Given I have a conceptualisation of the structure of Dignity in Care (The 10 Principles) and I have written items (in an attempt) to measure each of the 10 components, so is it better to use CFA to identify which items should belong to which factor?
As I understand it, I can retain the 10 Principles in the presentation of the questionnaire for data collection for CFA. Which is much preferred. But if I am undertaking data collection for EFA, I should remove the 10 Principles (as subheadings) and randomise all 50 items (which means I effectively lose the 10 Principles, which is the fundamental core of my research and is strongly linked to the "messaging" behind the Dignity in Care Campaign in UK and Australia.
If I do CFA, will any PhD examiner, worth one's salt, put a big red cross through it all and tell me I should have done EFA?
I would so appreciate anyone who is generous enough to share their expertise on this murky world of EFA or CFA.

CFA will give you the total scenario in a single frame. It's more better for describing your model.

After the literature review, I want to develop a conceptual model based on theory and subsequently test it qualitatively and quantitatively.
Is it possible to start with the development of a conceptual framework based on theoretical findings, optionally refine it after the qualitative part, and validate it quantitatively in the end?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer
Hi Ms. Watermann (Guten Morgen/Tag)
My name is Dr. Etame, I hold a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles-USA. I conducted a qualitative phenomenological study for my study back in 2016/2017. I am currently conducting a sequential explanatory comparative mixed methods study for my Ph.D. in Global Leadership and Change in the same institution. I submitted my draft to my committee a couple of weeks ago and I just received the feedback to start planning for my preliminary oral defense.
To your question, I believe (at least what worked for me) that you should your theoretical framework first as the blueprint that will inform or rather reinforce your methodology as follows:
1- Post positivism (Constructivism and Critical Theory);
2- Axiological, Ontological, and Epistemological underpinnings of the study;
3- Methodology: for Sequential explanatory Mixed-method, consider doing the following:
a- Phase 1: Collect and Analyze Quantitative Data through surveys (closed-ended questionnaires) and test hypotheses.
b- Integrate data by drawing your qualitative sample from your quantitative sample (about 10%)
c- Phase 2: Collect and Analyze qualitative data through semi-structured open-ended interviews.
Once you have set up your conceptual framework, you will have a clear picture of what your research question (s) and hypotheses will be, based on your underpinning theory (ies).
Once you establish this phase, you can now develop your literature review, based on your theoretical framework by funneling down your theory (ies), building your themes and concepts by aligning your variables: Independent Variable (predictor), mediator or moderator (if any), and finally your Dependent Variable (criterion).
I hope this will help unless you plan to conduct a sequential exploratory mixed method.
Good Luck...

Is there any difference between "Conceptual Models" and "Simplified Conceptual Models" in hydrology?
I mean if it is just a matter of simplification or these two expressions are used for two Different type of models with different characteristics and applications?
Relevant answer
Answer
In my more than three decades of involvement in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, I have never heard the term 'simplified conceptual model'. But I have seen models classified or described as conceptual, physically based, deterministic, stochastic, etc. etc.
A common problem in hydrology is that many terms are loosely used without first defining them, which then gives rise to a lot of confusion. This does not happen in physics or mathematics. Hydrologists should try not to use terms that are not well defined.

There is a categorization for Hydrological Models which divides them into three groups: Empirical models, Physical Models and Conceptual Models.
The question is: Where exactly "Hydrodynamic Models" stand within this categorization?
Are those three types related to rainfall-runoff models and Hydrodynamic models are within a different group?
Or Hydrodynamic Models can be a combination of those three types (i.e. a combination of Empirical and Conceptual Models)?
Relevant answer
Answer
A hydrodynamic model uses a numerical approximation (e.g. finite element or finite difference methods) to solve a PDE (e.g. shallow water wave equation, Saint-Venant equations). As such, these are physically-based models (or physics-based models if you prefer). You might use the output of an empirical or conceptual model to give the flows at the upper part of a reach being studied (i.e. set a boundary condition for solving the PDE), but a hydrodynamic model is a physically-based model.
Note that I have used "physically-based model" rather than "physical model" - a "physical model" could refer a model built out of concrete, plaster etc. for running simulations in a laboratory (i.e. not in a computer). For example, a scaled model of a floodplain used to study flood characteristics by actually running water over it.
It could be argued that a hydrodynamic model is a "physics-based" model rather than a "physically-based" model.

How do l develop a conceptual framework with suitable constructs from theoretical framework of a process model that will can be easily validated? I have the theoretical framework of the model also developed but the conceptual model with the reliable constructs for validation quantitatively is becoming a problem. I need help.
When your conceptual framework / research model developed is uniderpinning on previous theoretical framework means you should modify others' theoretical framework by adopting / adapting / add new constructs / variables to form your own / new conceptual framework / research model. When you do that, ensure you complete the following:
  1. Majority of your constructs / variables should be from previous theoretical frameworks - if you inject / replace too many your own / new variables then your conceptual framework / research model no longer underpinning on the previous theoretical framework - this might cause you don't have reliable quantitative results (rigorous literature review is paramount important).
  2. When you adopt variables from previous theoretical framework into your new conceptual framework / research model, ensure you inherit the similar operational definition and their survey questionnaire items - don't create your own unnecessarily. If variable adaptation is required, please adapt with the justification from the literature reviewed.
  3. When you inject new variables with their respective questionnaire items - ensure those items measure what you'd defined. You can't have gap / disconnect between the operational definition and its questionnaire items e.g. operational definition defines something whereas your questionnaire items measure something else!
  4. You should pilot test / pre-test your conceptual framework / research model with adequate sample size before going for actual big bang data collection. Pilot test provides you opportunity to evaluate the reliability & validity test results before enhancing the conceptual framework / research model further before actual data collection.
  5. You should use the correct statistical analyses to analyze your sampled data e.g. path analysis vs structural equation modeling, linear vs logit multiple regression, para vs non-para statistics etc.

I mean the graph going to be filled with a lot of arrows at the end...
Relevant answer
Answer
CONTROL VARIABLE functions as a means to see how the model responds when certain variables are included or excluded. If you are going to report the result of the study under certain "conditions" and these "conditions" relates to control variables then your supervisor is correct by showing these control variables on the conceptual framework.
NUMBER OF CONTROL VARIABLES of "around 20 CV" is probably too many and is an indication of poor literature review. It is mostly that you pick up these 20 CV from more than one literature source. If so, you should select only what is relevant to your case. Use information criterion to evaluate if you have too many variables. 20 CV may seem like over-fitting the model or just "having no idea" what is relevant.

Hello everyone. I am asking for help because I am completely confused.
For my thesis research, I am looking at how a person's individual values affects their job satisfaction and their organizational commitment, and in turn their organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). I've identified satisfaction and commitment as the foremost predictors of OCB from literary research, and want to test this relationship. In the below model you can see the dimensions of each concept, which I have based my survey items on.
Now my primary problem is that I have no idea how many hypotheses I have to test based on my conceptual model, or if this is my own choice (?). Here are my questions:
- Can I decide to divide the values in two sets, and say -for example- h1: org. commitment positively affects OCB, h2: set 1 positively affects org. commitment, so h3: set 1 positively affects OCB through org. commitment?
- And if so, do I have to use the same sets of values to base my hypotheses on for satisfaction, or can I make a different combination for the values > satisf. > OCB path?
- Also, is the arrow through the middle from values to OCB necessary for what I want to find out, or can I omit that relationship?
- And finally, I plan on doing my analysis through PLS path modelling. Is that correct or would you recommend a different method?
Relevant answer
Answer
If I understand you correctly, it looks like you're going to need one set of hypotheses for each value that you're going to test, Value1 through Value10. That's a lot of hypotheses!
It looks like you're hypothesizing that both Org Commitment and Job Satisfaction mediate the relationship between ValueX and OCB. This is only meaningful for the values that are significantly correlated to OCB (zero-order correlations). If such a relationship doesn't exist, mediation isn't meaningful.
However, I don't think I would make hypotheses about mediation. I can't imagine that the relationship between valuing hedonism, for example, and job satisfaction is very high (but I might be wrong). However, I think it might be interesting to examine whether holding certain values moderates a) the relationship between between job satisfaction and OCB, and b) the relationship between org commitment and OCB. This would help us better understand these relationships.

Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Jorick,
unfortunately, including a mediator variable diminishes the (causal) interpretation of the experiment although--of course--mediation is interesting to analyse as it explains why a treatment works (which is the core of the theoretical hypothesis underlying the experiment). This problem also exists in a randomized trial because the mediator and outcome are measured and, thus, influenced by shared unobserved confounders. My 2c:
I would go to a SEM and test the important restriction of T _|_ Y | M, where T is the treatment, Y is the outcome and M is the mediator. In other words: you test the model with the direct effect of T on Y fixed to zero. If this holds, and T has a strong effect (f value >10) than you could support the assumption that M-Y are unconfounded. In this case, T has the role of an instrumental variable. Perhaps you can identify one or more external predictors of M that have no direct effects on Y.
In this paper (sorry for the self-ad), we did that in a randomized scenario experiment:
In that paper you will find the relevant literature regarding. In addition, see the following papers (in descending centrality).

For modelling and identifying any process, including business capabilities, it is needed to use a systems analysis methodology such as the one I and attaching, developed by me for the concrete case of engineering systems. Firstly you do an external analysis and, as a result of this analysis, you will be able to formulate a conceptual mathematical model (in the most general case it will be multi level and multi objetive, complex model). If the dimension of this model will be large enought you must to decompose it an identify every one of the relations that are part of your model. Once your model is identified you must to develope the optimization procedures for each subtask and the solutions conciliation between them. I hope these ideas will be useful for you

I was alerted to this project because a paper I co-authored had cited previous work by the lead author of this paper. Our paper was also about community water issues in Ghana.
Since leaving the environmental health group where I worked on that paper, I have been pursuing a PhD and working with a colleague on methods to improve the way qualitative data are used. Because of your interested in sustaining this intervention, I think your work might benefit significantly from these methods.
The methods would allow you to test whether your interview data can support the claim that a sustainable water committee can reasonably be assumed to exist (claims sustainability is potentially-endogenous), or if they always require outside inputs (means sustainability is exogenous). Of course, there is a continuum, but the methods do a good job. You do this by using some concepts from endogenous theory-building.

I'm looking for software (preferably free!) to use to help me draw good-looking conceptual diagrams for publication. I typically default to Word or PowerPoint but their drawing tools don't offer the kind of functionality and professional look I've seen in some publications.
By 'conceptual diagram' I'm referring to something between a mind map and flow chart. Think about the kinds of diagrams people use to explain the structure of a thesis, or to model an information flow, or to present a conceptual framework...

More than 40 years later, and there is still no standard for the ER model. Both researchers and industry say that is a popular database design tool, and it is still a must-taught topic in almost every basic database course. So, there is a need for clarifying the motivations for this state of affairs.
However, it is fair to say that it is not clear yet if it is viable to have an ER model standard as a design language. Therefore, I could ask: is it?.
Relevant answer

I agree with you. Probably we need an official/standardized UML Class Diagram notation for ER modelling, but it will take time.

The literature so far ensues the probable discrepancies in the present mindfulness instruments either at conceptual level or psychometric level. I am going to be conducting my doctoral research in Pakistan and I am very much excited to introduce this phenomenon as an intervention or as a clinical endeavour. But i believe that this construct needs to be studied and understood as by the population it is being intended for and for that I was thinking of establishing an instrument that captures the Buddhist flavor ( having a more religious or faith-based tinge) as well as the Western psychological perspective (being relatively more tangible) .I was concerned about where to start, should I start from scratch (by first developing a working conceptual model) or should I use some earlier developed instruments as my baseline, like FFMQ ?
Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated!!

Dear everyone,
I am currently diving into the topic of SEM for my Masters thesis and I am currently encountering some problems.
My research aim is to investigate the influence of the number of interactions of a Facebook brand post on consumers' attitude toward the post, attitude toward the brand and purchase intention. Based on literature review, I hypothesized that the number of interactions influences the attitude toward the post, which influences the attitude toward the brand, which influences consumers' purchase intention. I hope the picture of my conceptual model clarifies the causal relationships I want to investigate. I conducted data of two test groups - one was exposed to a Facebook brand post with a high number of interactions and one was exposed to the same Facebook brand post with a low number of interactions.
For CFA, my first measurement model looks like the one in the second picture. I am now wondering if it is right to covary all latent variables or if I should conduct CFA for each latent variable, which would mean that I end up with three measurement models?
Thank you so much in advance!
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Theresa
you have got me hooked. Let me see if I can wrap this up correctly: What you have done is use non-parametric tests (Median test, Mann-Whitney-U-Test) in order to check whether your three latent constructs are distributed equally across groups – instead of independent t-tests – because the Kolgomorov-Smirnoff test told you that you have no normal distribution of your data.
However, I do not see how you have “tested” anything with that. As far as I know, this is (important!) preliminary work for the actual analysis, SEM or regression in your case.
Incorporating your categorical predictor is fairly easy. You simply regress it on the three constructs with the SEM. For that, there must be a linear connection between “interactions” and the three constructs, which can be checked by correlation matrices. If there is no linearity, you probably have to logarithmise “interactions” by creating a new variable (ln(interactions) and check the correlation matrices again.
Given linearity, you would then proceed with regressing “interactions” on the three constructs. The three regression coefficients you get will tell you if, say, a high number of interactions "predict" higher attitudes and purchase intentions.
Lastly, you may then compare means (or medians) and standard deviations of the group with low interactions to the one with high interactions and the three constructs and calculate cohen’s d (https://www.psychometrica.de/effektstaerke.html).
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: I am not a statistician by trade and had to learn everything from scratch myself. Since I am not entirely convinced I have expressed myself in a comprehensive way, I could offer you further clarification through Skype or telephone. If you are interested, we could discuss the details by messaging each other directly.
Until then: All the best!

after setting up my groundwater model with GMS (MODFLOW). the error is so high i employed PEST calibration after the manual calibration. however the error margin is still high and needs to be calibrated fully. Can i have alternatives approach to reduce the error especially when changing the boundary conditions is either increasing the error or comes back to same after it finishes iterating
Relevant answer
Answer
I'm assuming by error you mean the mass balance or percent discrepancy error reported by MODFLOW in the output file. Check the output file for warnings and errors. You can reduce your convergence criteria in the solver options to reduce this error. PEST will not help reduce this error. You need to figure out why your model is unstable first. Review your conceptual model to see that your model boundary conditions are representative of your understanding of the groundwater system. Good luck.

We are trying to start a project that faces three main objectives:
1. We are trying to determine PAHs (benzo(a)pyrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(ghi)perylene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, indeno(123cd)pyrene, naphtalene) background levels in freshwater surface water bodies. We have data from monitoring of these PAHS in water and sediment matrices and we have data only for BaP for biota matrix. We have also acces to data for land cover. We have no data from literature about PAHs levels in the sepcific waterbodies.
Can anyone advise on methodology to determine PAHs natural background levels, any models that can be supplemented by monitoring data? What other data do we need to prepare the model and the methodology?
2. We are trying to localize natural sources of PAHs emission. The natural sources need to be implemented in the calculation of natural background levels.
What would be the best way to do it? Which data can we use to find the natural sources of PAHs?
3. We are also trying to determine transport pathways of PAHs into given water bodies based on the data we have already collected. Probably, besides data we have already (monitoring and land cover) we need also digital elevation model. What else do we need to determine these pathways?

My dilemma resides in the fact that upon using SmartPLS to test the other relationships contained in my model, I find myself unsure whether to continue employing the same method to test the aforesaid relationship( sociodemographic factors__> fair trade products perception ) or i should apply an other method to test it. If it is the case, then i'm much obliged if you point it out for me or provide me with some references that should ease my confusion, if possible of course.

I think you can create a model in moderation, where categorical variables could do this moderation between constructs coming from metric variables.
It can get very interesting and reveal other possibilities.
See for example: HAIR, J. F .; HULT, G. T. M .; RINGLE, C. M .; SARSTEDT, M. A Primer on Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Thousand Oaks. Sage Publications, 201.
Also you could do logistic regressions or discriminant analysis with your data, where the categorical variables would be used to guide analysis of differences between us.
Hope this help

Hi Ghaith - apologies for a slow reply, I've only just seen your message.
The rationale for the project is the finding that the physical workplace environment has a significant impact upon unwellness and lost productivity. Various factors contribute to this, including poor indoor environmental quality and limited consideration of whether the space provided is suitable for the needs of the employees. The ED-R model is presented as a comprehensive framework that can encompass a wide range of environmental features, and also includes a dynamic component to recognise the reciprocity between person and environment.

I'm comparing the textual content of scenarios developed in two ways: control scenarios, written using designers' preferred existing methods, and scenarios built using the Contextual Scenario toolkit. I believe I'm seeing a pattern of more vividness in the latter, but I'm hoping for some way to quantify the difference to make sure it's not just wishful thinking. I imagine something like "use of verbs other than the 100 most common" or some such. Thank you!

Dr. Alvermann, thank you for the further question. The statement came from the strengths and weaknesses of Google Site platform that the students should use in this project. Google's collaborative identities and intentions as a corporate are greatly reflected to the Google Site. Google wanted it to be easy making websites through the Google Site platform at the expense of limiting users' creativity in making websites. It means that the design of websites in the Google Site platform will be already set up by the Google Site platform. However, it does not mean that students cannot imbue the Google sites with their design thinking. Therefore, in terms of the aspects of the website design, I think that the websites created by students' groups in this project will be the interactive results of students' collaborative identities and Google's collaborative identities. Some secondary school students are capable of creating websites from scratch by coding by themselves. I think that the websites created by those students show the students' identities as web designers fully in terms of design aspects. In the current project, we plan to focus more on students' multimodal literacies and "identity kits" shown in the students' group's content in the websites rather than the design of websites because in the current project the website design is largely dependent on the design themes of Google Site platform. Dr. Alvermann, I hope that my answer could explain my previous statement further. Have a great day, Dr. Alvermann!!

I've included the model below, the big squares are my independent- and dependent variables and the small squares are my control variables pointing to my dependent variables. I would really appreciate if you could look at this for me!

Hi Jessica.  Drawing the lines from the control variables to the variables you expect them to potentially influence is correct.  Your model looks fine in that regard.
A broader question is why are you including those four controls and why only control their effects on the DV?  I'm not suggesting it's wrong but you will want to be sure you are justifying their inclusion and why they are influencing certain variables and not others.  Perhaps you have already, just a suggestion!  Good luck!!

Dear all, I have heard that verbs are the most unchanging class of grammatical elements of a language (possibly, restricted to Indo-european languages) in terms of semantics. If have gotten this right, nouns, adjectives etc. change semantics more frequently than verbs. For example, the noun "fascination" and has changed meaning from bewitching (cf. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=fascination) to a less dangerous form (cf. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/fascination). Verbs such as eat, sleep still retain their meaning. Note, that the verb "fascinate" has changed semantics. If I gotten this right, it is more likely that verbs are more stable over time, not an absolute guarantee.
When I look for sources (see links), however, I do not find this. Instead I find evidence that can be interpreted as verb are less stable than other grammatical elements (time stability). However, my guess is that this refers to the fact that there are different tenses in verbs not that they are as a class of grammatical elements unchanging. I also found "corpus-based" studies that seems to relate more to what I am looking for.
Questions:
  1. I am probably not using the correct terminology, so if you think you got an idea of what I am looking for, then your are most welcome to correct this.
  2. If I, by happenstance, is close to correct in my use of terminology, then is it true that verbs as a class of grammatical elements are less changing over time compared to other classes of grammatical elements?
  3.  Then, if I am correct, then I would be delighted to get a reference to a good source.
I am looking for a source to either support or not support the argument that looking at activities (in, for example, conceptual modeling) that are related to verbs  is better than looking at other classes of grammatical elements since they are less changing.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Jonas,
very interesting question. Frankly speaking, I didn't know that verbs' meaning changes less frequently than that of other grammatical elements, but if you say ))
I would look for a correlation between semantic classes of verbs and their meanings using etymological  dictionaries from different periods. There are different taxonomies of semantic classes in Levin verbs (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jlawler/levin.verbs) or General Inquirer (http://www.wjh.harvard.edu/~inquirer/homecat.htm). There are many etymological dictionaries on the Internet, for example, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, eISBN: 9780191727153.

Based on the literature review I expect the relation between budget participation (IV) and budget slack (DV) to be not significant, however budget participation seems to play a key role in the development of budget slack through the interaction with other factors. Therefore I expect the variables information asymmetry, budget emphasis and organizational commitment (all 3 MV) to moderate the not significant relation between participation and budget slack. I am also interested in the direct effect of these moderator variables.
My main questions are:
* Is it possible to research moderator interactions on a not significant relation
* Is is possible to use information asymmetry, budget emphasis and organizational commitment both as a moderator- and idependent variable

• Carry out international comparative studies of the students' and teachers’ psychological determinants of motivation, engagement and volition;
• Study ecological validity and generalization of the EduFlow model and the Heuristic Model of the Individually Motivated Collective.

Conceptual modeling languages for information and business systems focus on certain aspects of the system, e.g. its data model, its process model, and so forth. Some models are detailing elements of other models. Elements of some models are referenced in other models, and so forth.
My question is an ontological one about which types of links exist between models and/or the elements.
Here is my initial list:
T1 (reference)
Element X defined in model A is referenced inside model B.
T2 (implementation)
Element X in model A is implemented by element Y in model B.
Which other types of links exist in methods that combine several modeling languages?
Relevant answer
Answer
Thanks a lot Juha-Pekka! I agree that inter-notational links can hardly be distinguished from intra-notational ones. Modeling language designers pragmatically declare which constructs are part of the language and which belong to a neighbor language. The reason must be in the way how humans think and that they only want to cope with a small set of constructs at a time. As a result, not all link types are used for inter-notational links. Or at least: It would result in weird modeling languages. For example, the control flow between process steps should be part of the the same modeling language that defines the process steps.

Answer
Release of water is endothermic only if you deal with a single, purely physical, process. But here you deal with a chemical reaction. Calculation of enthalpy cleartly shows that polymerisation is exothermic, and release of water is only a small part of the whole process, which globally produces a significant amount of heat.

Finding methods and tools, which cover each of the three domains, is difficult in the literature. Please advise if any trans-disciplinary method exist for architectural and operational, or possibly for a hybrid modeling, of complex systems.

Dear Imre,
The most expressive infrastructure/tool suite that I have found for modelling  pre-embodiment and actual embodiment of SW and  HW architectures and their implementations is Ptolemy-II at http://ptolemy.eecs.Berkeley.edu/ptolemyII/ by the team  at Berkeley led by Prof. Edward A. Lee. The system uses a work-flow among functional "actors"  within performance contexts defined by "director" abstractions, and these workflows  can be laid out in a 2-D graphics environment and has a very powerful ability for taming heterogeneity and complexity. It's is a weakness that it does not contain extensive Ontology support.
On the Ontology/Cyberware side of your question, I found Protege by Stanford at http://protege.stanford.edu/ to be very powerfull, but also other tools in the semantic web list at http://answers.semanticweb.com/questions/3316/list-of-ontology-modeling-tools.
I hope this helps a little
