If the two concepts are said to be orthogonal, this then confirmed the evidence cited by Schulz & Schultz (2005) and referenced by Saade & Bahli (2005) and Rusch Feja & Siebeky (1999) in suggesting that locus of control increases in internality up until middle age. The authors at this point also note that environment becomes pronounced between the age of eight and fourteen. ...

... With respect to the adoption of the electronic media for scientific communication, a recent survey shows a significantly high acceptance of electronic journals and repositories, and an unwillingness to return to print versions only (Rusch-Feja;Siebeky, 1999). According to Swan and Brown (2005), a vast majority of authors (69%, among those who have never published in open access journals), if required to deposit copies of their published articles in one or more repositories, declared that would do so willingly (Swan;Brown, 2005). ...

Scientific communication has undergone deep transformations, since the emergence of Internet. Aiming to provide further thought on the evolution of scientific communication, this paper features a historical overview of the scientific communication advances over the last twenty years through a three-phase model for the evolution of the electronic journal and the preprints services, and presents Brazilian contemporary panorama for scientific communication. The three-phase model presented in this work is an adaptation of that one proposed by Tenopir et al. ( 2003) to describe the patterns of journal use by scientists since 1990. The early evolutionary phase followed the emergence of the first digital journals and the creation of repositories in the Web for publishing preliminary versions of scientific literature on the author's initiative; by that time, most academics reproved electronic publishing initiatives. From 1996 and forward, in the consolidation phase, electronic journals were commonly identical to their print counterparts; the acceptance of the electronic format began to increase, and preprint services got underway in several disciplines. The advanced evolutionary phase started with the world discussion on open access to scientific information. The comparison of the current electronic journal with that viewed by enthusiasts in the first years of the 1990s shows that some aspects still remain to be improved in electronic formal and informal communication, towards effective dissemination of scientific information.

Following a worldwide trend, from 2015 Scientia Medica will be published only in electronic format. This will be one more milestone in the history of this journal, created in printed form in November 1988, with the name of "Revista de Medicina da PUCRS". In 1999 a section was created for the journal on the website of the School of Medicine, but the whole editorial process was still developed in the traditional way, by post and printed material. In 2004 the title changed to Scientia Medica and the journal has opened its boundaries, starting to stimulate submissions from multiple institutions and from around the world. Adopting the electronic-only model will not change the scientific rigor of Scientia Medica, which will keep exactly the same process of peer-review and editorial guidelines that have already been adopted. Article-based publishing will be maintained and completion of the issues will occur with the same periodicity. The final layout will remain the same, and the full texts will be available in PDF, with free access.
... Other factors that affect the usage rate of journals are availability of journals at the work place and the format of the journal (whether a printed material or electronic) (3). E-journal, printed journal, and database usage data from campus polls conducted annually, 1998-2000, at one large research university show increased use of e-journals and decreased use of printed journals by faculty and graduate students as the number of available e-journals increased from two hundred to more than three thousand. Little or no statistical correlation between age and frequency of use was found. The majority of frequent users of all three types of resources were from departments in the sciences. Transcripts from the 1998 poll provided insights into attitudes toward replacing printed journals with e-journals. The advantages and disadvantages mentioned were consistent with previous studies.
... During this period, there were approximately 28,000 electronic viewings of full-text articles from the study subset, compared to only 1,800 uses of the corresponding print volumes. In another survey of researchers' use and acceptance of electronic journals, 77.5% of the respondents considered that obtaining the electronic journal more quickly than the print version was very advantageous (Diann & Uta, 1999). ...

Journals, which were earlier published in print-only version, are now published in both the online and print versions. It has been established that online versions, free or not, have greater impact over the print version. But there is a difference between the dates of publication of the online and print version of the same journal. This is called the delay measured in terms of days. The purpose of this study is to find the average time delay. For this, data for more than 200 journals of various subjects from different publishers have been manually acquired for publications during the first 6 months of year 2005. Further subject-wise investigation was made during the last month of the year 2005. The average delay is found to be nearly 3 months, but it varies for different publishers. Also, the issue of large deviation from the average delay – as noted in some journals – will be discussed here.

This paper presents results taken from 2008 to 2010 of an ongoing microform use study. The number of titles used is evenly distributed over time with microfilm being the most used format and newspapers accounting for half of all usage. When publications are available electronically, users may still use the microform version. This study illustrates how microform and electronic collections are complementary—electronic materials provide better access but microform is better for preservation. Users prefer electronic materials but will also use microform when there is no online version available or when the online version is not an exact copy of the original.

This paper aims to investigate the practices of Pakistani academic researchers with respect to using, citing, and publishing their scholarly work. The quantitative survey method adopted to collect data from local researchers was based on an instrument developed and used by CIBER. Their notions and practices involved in deciding trust and quality of scholarly journals were obtained. The findings revealed that national and institutional policies have significantly influenced their decisions regarding the publishing outlets. The credibility of indexing services was found to be an important factor in choosing the journal for publishing research. ISI Web of Science Impact Factor was not considered as the top source for determining quality and trustworthiness. This study is the first of its kind that targets the top two universities of the country. A comparison of the findings with another international study shows that some of the behavioural traits are compatible with scholars from less-developed countries like India and China, while others are more similar to the ones from highly developed countries like USA and UK.

While a large number of studies have measured the use of electronic journals and databases and have surveyed users, few studies have involved IIT Roorkee in their study. The present study tried to know the user awareness and perceptions of EIS.The survey conducted mesures use of online journals and the databases by the under graduate, postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty members of IIT Roorkee. To conduct the survey a total of 300 questionnaires were distributed to the selected sample for the year 2010-11; 283 valid samples were collected and analyzed. The result showed a growing interest in EIS among the users at IIT Roorkee, India. The survey showed that majority of respondents marked that library possessed useful online journals and databases. Awareness among the users about the availability of EIS was found highly satisfactory. EIS were mostly used for research needs. The EIS is better for accessing current Comprehensive information. User's perception of e-resources as a replacement for print in meeting their information needs is 100% to a very high extent e-resources have become a substitute for printed materials.</p

The Google Generation examines original and secondary research evidence from international sources to determine whether there is a younger generation of learners who are adopting different styles of information search behaviour from older generations as a function of their patterns of use of online technologies. The book addresses the questions: might the widespread availability and use of search engines, such as Google, give rise to a different type of scholar who seeks out and utilises online information sources and thereby develops a different orientation to learning from older generations whose information seeking practices became established initially in the offline world. © 2009 B. The paper provides the results of the first phase of the research project Trust and Authority in Scholarly Communications: The Periphery of World Scholarship in the Digital Era conducted in Malaysia. The objective of the study is to examine the changing behaviours and attitudes of academic researchers in today's scholarly digital environment, with respect to how they determine authority and trustworthiness in the sources they use, cite, and publish in. This phase utilised focus groups to address the research objective. Five focus groups were held during the period of December 2013 to April 2014 in three universities in Kuala Lumpur. In all a total of 48 researchers attended the focus groups, comprising 21 scientists and 27 social scientists. Findings indicate that peer-reviewed journals are still the central to the authors, however they seem to have more freedom in relation to journals they read and cite, compared to publish. Overall, authors view that scholarly resources that are current, relevant, authored by credential scholars, peer-reviewed, having credible reference lists, published by reputable journals, and having online presence are fit for scholarly utilisation. The extent to which authors are prepared to believe that the scholarly information source and channel are trustworthy for publication rely on it in view of its impact, indexation status, reputation, peers' recommendation, accessibility and visibility, and authority's approval. New forms of communication channels such as social media or new journal models are not much used in formal scholarly communication. The focus groups provided the direction for questionnaires and interviews that would follow. The paper also discusses the implication of the findings to academic librarians towards delivering the right services to meet the needs of the scholarly community.

This paper reviews studies along three dimensions : user information behavior in searching/using documents, new conceptual/technical models for electronic documents, and interaction mechanisms. Putting together the understanding of users and enabling technologies, requirements and considerations in developing systems with granular interactions are discussed in the conclusion.

The aim of this study is to investigate the link between the use of electronic resources and the academic output of researchers in the state universities of Castile and Leon (Spain) in the period 2006 to 2011. An analysis was undertaken of the consumption of contents distributed to the Universities of Burgos, Leon, Salamanca and Valladolid by three multidisciplinary suppliers whose materials are widely used: ScienceDirect, SpringerLink and Wiley. In investigating academic output, the databases Web of Science (WoS) from Thomson Reuters and Scopus from Elsevier were taken into account. The consumption of electronic academic contents at the four universities shows an upward trend over the years considered. There is an undoubted preference for titles distributed by ScienceDirect, striking in all the institutions. The study confirms that academics from the areas of science and technology were the most frequent users. The field of Chemistry registered the highest rates of both consumption and academic production, followed at some distance by publications related to Food Science and Technology, in respect of preferred title use, and by Physics with regard to communication of research results. Many of the journals selected for publications belonged to the suppliers investigated. Nevertheless, the work showed no absolute direct correlation between titles selected for academic publication and titles used from the platforms analyzed.

The study is focused on the changes in the consumption of electronic information by the academic communities of five Spanish universities through the contents distributed by four widely used suppliers, from the very first subscription to them down to 2010. Similarly, the preferences of these institutions for titles distributed by the suppliers under consideration and their links to various different academic fields were investigated. From 24% to 30% of the overall total of downloads came from the top 25 favourite titles of the respective academic communities. This fact points to a need to go beyond the Big Deal model and strive for greater flexibility in subscriptions to resources, so as to have made-to-measure supplies.

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting user acceptance of Web-based subscription databases. Considering the reported underutilization of Web-based subscription databases and the importance of promoting them, this study aimed to provide a better understanding of the determinants of user acceptance based on a well-established theoretical foundation. This study tested an integrated model of the antecedents and consequents of user beliefs toward intended use by extending TAM, which is one of the most prominent models used to explain the effects of users’ internal beliefs and attitudes on their system usage behavior. This study employed a cross-sectional field study using a Web survey method. The study targeted undergraduate students who have experience using the databases provided by the University Libraries. A final sample of 121 responses was analyzed. The measurement model and the structural model were tested using Partial Least Squares. Overall, the research model was found to be effective in explaining user acceptance of Web-based subscription databases. The results of the data analysis showed that perceived usefulness had a stronger effect on user acceptance than ease of use, suggesting that user acceptance of Web-based subscription databases depends primarily on the utility they offer. Job relevance and result demonstrability showed positive effects on usefulness perceptions while output quality did not. The results indicated that user training did not have a significant effect on either usefulness or ease of use, calling for the need to re-examine the effectiveness of user training in the context of Web-based subscription databases. Terminology clarity and accessibility were found to be important determinants for ease of use of the databases. The results also suggested that although subjective norm does not directly affect intended use, it exerts a positive influence on user beliefs about the utility of Web-based subscription databases.

This article presents the results of a study performed on the interlibrary loan patron request records at the library of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, an urban commuter college with a specialized curriculum. The findings suggest that the increasing availability of electronic full-text resources has had a significant impact on the volume of faculty and graduate student interlibrary loan borrowing of nonreturnable, photocopied materials. This appears to be the case across disciplines and regardless of the currency of the needed materials. The downward trend in demand for these materials may be outpacing actual full-text availability. This may suggest that content is being replaced with convenience. This could have implications for reference librarians and their role in the research process. Declining demand may also provide interlibrary loan librarians and their staff opportunities to alter their services and develop new skills.

This article explores recent developments in the production and delivery of scholarly journal articles in digital form. It identifies the key stakeholders as authors, publishers, librarians and end users. It explores their concerns with regard to the digital journal production and delivery chain. It also explores the interrelationships of different stakeholder groups and considers how their concerns accord or conflict. The paper goes on to review cost and pricing developments. There appears to be no relationship between production costs and subscription prices of scholarly journals. Journals are priced according to what the market will bear, but, at the same time, the market is inelastic. As a result, prices have consistently increased annually at a rate well above the general inflation rate for the last two decades. Digital publishing by publishers has done nothing to relieve this problem. The ‘serials crisis’ has been the impetus for a number of developments that aim to use digital technology to reduce costs for the HE sector. These include alternative models of journal production such as that proposed by Harnad, and initiatives that aim to influence the structure of the market for scholarly journals with a view to driving prices down such as SPARC and HighWire Press. These developments are reviewed.

This research examines how electronic documents (e-documents) such as electronic journals (e-journals) could be enhanced in the electronic environment to make them more valuable to end-users. In particular, it investigates how a wide range of information searching, analysis and communicating tasks involved in interacting with e-documents could be supported within a single user interface (UI) environment, using e-journals as an example of e-documents. The research tasks completed in the study include the elicitation of user needs and wants, a comprehensive review of latest research developments in electronic publishing and e-documents, derivation of a new set of information and interaction properties that are necessary for a new digital environment to support enhanced access and value-adding to e-documents, and the design of a platform (PROPIE) to demonstrate the use of various features and functionality to support creative and effective e-document use. Providing a suite of novel features and interactive tools that could be flexibly combined, PROPIE allowed users to apply multiple novel ways to intuitively query and navigate information in e-documents. The querying and browsing processes in PROPIE were supported by various interactive and visualization techniques. A set of interface mock-ups was developed to demonstrate the potential of PROPIE in supporting the design of a new-generation of e-journals. Following that, a series of empirical evaluations of various aspects of the environment was conducted using up to a sample of 83 graduate students in three separate tiers to obtain representative users’ feedback with regard to interacting with e-journals. This paper reports the major research findings of these evaluations. In particular, it describes the types of features, tools and interaction identified as desirable and required in future e-journals systems. The conclusions were that top-ranked features of e-journals were those not available in print journals and included those of querying, navigation and visualization that contributed to enhanced access, advanced interaction and value-adding contents.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present some of the results of the project “Evaluating the usage and impact of e‐journals in the UK”. The particular research reported here evaluated the use of the ScienceDirect journals database with regard to Life Sciences, Economics, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences and Physics by ten major UK research institutions. The aim of the study is to investigate researchers' digital behaviour, and to ascertain whether their use and behaviours varied by subjects and disciplines, or in relation to the institutions in which they worked. Design/methodology/approach – Raw logs for ScienceDirect were obtained for the period January to April 2007, were subject to deep log techniques and analysed using the Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings – Typically, 5 per cent of the ScienceDirect journals viewed accounted for a third to half of all use. A high proportion of researchers entered the ScienceDirect site via a third‐party site, and this was especially so in the case of the Life Sciences and in the highest‐ranked research institutions. There were significant institutional and subject differences in information‐seeking behaviour. In the most research‐intensive institutions, per capita journal use was highest and their users spent much less time on each visit. There were significant differences of the order of 100‐300 per cent in the age of material viewed between subjects and institutions. Just four months after ScienceDirect content was opened to Google indexing, a third of traffic to the site's Physics journals came via that route. Originality/value – The research is one of the very few studies to investigate subject and institutional differences with regard to the information seeking and use of UK researchers, something UK academic librarians should particularly welcome.

Purpose To examine some of the ways in which electronic resources have made an impact on traditional interlending practices and how some user‐practices have begun to change. Design/methodology/approach This study uses both quantitative and qualitative data. The qualitative data were gathered through a questionnaire about the impact of electronic resources and the use of ILL. Comparisons of change were made with document suppliers. Findings The electronic full‐text is as yet unable to fully meet the needs of the researchers. Until full‐text can approximate what is available in print both in journals and in monographs, the need for document delivery services will remain. Originality/value An insight into the state of e‐journal penetration and its impact on document delivery in Spain – a country where few studies have been carried out in this area.

For a core journal to be developed, fruitful research articles, diversity, and continuity of research topics are essential. The main goal of this study was to trace the thematic evolution (historical development) of agricultural and natural resource academic journals (ANAJs) published by public academic institutions in Iran. To this end, the study analyzed 2,961 articles published from 1905–2003 in all publicly-funded ANAJs in all contributing agricultural and natural resource academic majors (subfields), examining the scientific domain, research subject, research method, citations, impacts, and the aggregation level of journals on academic majors and academic majors on journals. Less than 5% of the articles were qualitative and cited theoretical frameworks. Over 95% were quantitative articles as their publications progressed. Thematically, agronomy and plant breeding, with 31.68%, had the highest aggregation level among academic majors; whereas, agricultural extension and education, with 2.08%, had the lowest.

Issues surrounding the purchase of full-text databases by small hospital libraries and the development of standards for acquisitions are the focus of this article. Considerations include library strategic planning, content, material format, duplication, coverage/completeness, ease of use, archiving, licensing/copyright and affordability along with any recommended standards by various library groups including MLA. Potential effects of purchasing decisions, not only on individual libraries, but upon the information delivery system as a whole are described. Finally, full-text database criteria formulation is advocated for inclusion into a library's collection development policy. Available online and print sources relating to these issues are provided for further information.

As a part of a wider doctoral research, this paper deals with the communication and information-seeking behavior of research (PhD) students in physics and astronomy. Based on a qualitative case study of PhD students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London, this study seeks to derive behavioral patterns in information-seeking activities of PhD students. The study aims to investigate the intradisciplinary differences in information-seeking activities of physicists and astronomers. The findings show the high reliance of PhD students in physics and astronomy on electronic journals and their low use of libraries. The findings reveal differences in the information-seeking patterns of students who conduct theoretical research and those of whom are involved in experimental research. The research highlights the need for the study of small subject communities within academic disciplines instead of studying users in a broad subject area such as physics as one single domain.

Adopting an intradisciplinary perspective, this article evaluates the information-seeking behavior of academics from different subfields of physics and astronomy. It investigates the effect of interdisciplinarity (reliance on the literature of other subjects) and the scatter of literature on two aspects of the information-seeking behavior: methods used for keeping up-to-date and for identifying articles. To this end a survey of 114 PhD students and staff at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University College London was carried out. The findings showed that the subfields that are more interdisciplinary or have a more scattered literature are more likely to use general search facilities for finding information. The study also showed that cross-disciplinary use of the literature is not necessarily an indicator of scattered literature. The study reveals intradisciplinary differences among physicists and astronomers in terms of their information-seeking behavior and highlights the risk of overlooking the characteristics of information-seeking behavior of specialized subject communities by focusing on very broad subject categories.
