Abstract

[This article was also published as a Chapter in the book: Aquatic biodiversity : a celebratory volume in honour of Henri J. Dumont ]. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/226127394; Effects of several surfactants and chemical mixtures on marine bivalves were studied. An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA), inhibited the filtering activity of oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Similar effects were exhibited by some chemical mixtures that included surfactants. Those mixtures inhibited the filtering activity of Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis. The new results are in agreement with the author’s previous experiments, where a number of xenobiotics and/or pollutants inhibited the filtering activity of several species of marine and freshwater bivalves, e.g., it had been shown that SDS inhibited filtering activity of Mytilus edulis (e.g., Ostroumov, 2000c, 2001a). This experimental approach is helpful in assessment of environmental hazards from man-made chemicals that can contaminate marine systems. ** This article was also published as a Chapter in the book: Aquatic biodiversity : a celebratory volume in honour of Henri J. ... Corexit 9500) and of chemically dispersed oil have been reported in recent studies (Almeda et al., 2014;Goodbody-Gringley et al., 2013). Paradoxically, chemically dispersed oil is cleaned from the environment by degradation and enhanced biodegradation but the process also renders hydrocarbons more bioavailable for marine filter-feeding organisms and results in more severe effects (Baussant et al., 2001;Luna-Acosta et al., 2011); moreover, surfactants themselves can be noxious (Ostroumov, 2003). As a result, the utilitarian value of dispersants as alternatives to mechanical oil removal in the marine environment is still under discussion. ...
... These results suggest that not only oil, both chemically and mechanically dispersed, but also the employed dispersant exert sublethal toxic effects on oysters, as previously reported in other marine species (e.g. Almeda et al., 2014;Goodbody-Gringley et al., 2013;Mu et al., 2014;Ostroumov, 2003). Likewise, Vv NL was markedly reduced in all the treated oysters in comparison with controls, and once again more markedly in CD treated oysters. ...
... In conclusion, the present results suggest that chemically-dispersed oil exerts more remarkable sublethal effects in oysters in comparison to mechanically-dispersed oil and that dispersant provokes some sublethal toxicity, at least transiently; as reported for other biological effects endpoints and in other marine animals (Almeda et al., 2014;Baussant et al., 2011;Goodbody-Gringley et al., 2013;Ostroumov, 2003) and in oyster early life stages (Luna-Acosta et al., 2011). These results suggest also that if the chemical dispersant of the series type FINASOL® is used to respond to an oil spill, long-term effects are not expected in oysters. ...

The impact of dispersed crude oil and dispersant on adult Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, was evaluated through an integrative biomarker approach including (1) biochemical (plasma catecholase- and laccase-type phenoloxidase and superoxide dismutase), (2) histological (digestive cell lysosomal responses, digestive gland histopathology) and (3) physiological (flesh condition index) endpoints in the haemolymph and digestive gland. Adult oysters were exposed to non-contaminated water (control), chemically-dispersed oil (Brut Arabian Light), mechanically-dispersed oil and dispersant (FINASOL®) alone for 2 days, and further depurated in non-contaminated water for 4 weeks. After exposure to chemically and mechanically dispersed oil oysters exhibited induction of plasma laccase-type phenoloxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, enlargement of digestive cell lysosomes, lipofuscin accumulation, reduced neutral lipid content and atrophy of digestive gland diverticula; more markedly on exposure to chemically dispersed oil. From the studied biomarkers, only lysosomal biomarkers were significantly affected after exposure to the dispersant alone. This included lysosomal enlargement, neutral lipid depletion and lipofuscin accumulation in the digestive gland epithelium. A recovery of plasma enzyme activities was observed after 4 weeks of depuration. The integrative biological response index indicated that chemically dispersed oil caused significantly higher stress to C. gigas than the mechanically-dispersed one or the dispersant alone; nevertheless, the response seems to be reversible after depuration.

The surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in 0.5 mg L −1 can inhibit the filter-feeding activity of mussels (Ostroumov 2003). In the ramshorn snail P. pilsbryi, a concentration greater than 4.9 mg L −1 of surfactant mixture inhibited egg mass production; the LC 50 was observed to be 7.3 mg L −1 , and the EC 50 for oviposition was 2 mg L −1 (Prosser et al. 2017). ...

Plastic pollution in marine ecosystems constitutes an important threat to marine life. For vertebrates, macro/microplastics can obstruct and/or transit into the airways and digestive tract whereas nanoplastics (NPs; < 1000 nm) have been observed in non-digestive tissues such as the liver and brain. Whether NPs cross the intestinal epithelium to gain access to the blood and internal organs remains controversial, however. Here, we show directly NP translocation across the intestinal barrier of a fish, the European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, ex vivo. The luminal side of median and distal segments of intestine were exposed to fluorescent polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) of 50 nm diameter. PS-NPs that translocated to the serosal side were then detected quantitatively by fluorimetry, and qualitatively by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (Py-GC-HRMS). Fluorescence intensity on the serosal side increased 15–90 min after PS-NP addition into the luminal side, suggesting that PS-NPs crossed the intestinal barrier; this was confirmed by both SEM and Py-GC-HRMS. This study thus evidenced conclusively that NPs beads translocate across the intestinal epithelium in this marine vertebrate.

Thesis
... With large discharges of anionic surfactants every year, the effects of anionic surfactants on antioxidant enzymes of bivalve/fish have attracted more and more recent attention (Guilhermino et al., 2000;Ostroumov, 2003;da Silva and Meirelles, 2004;Romanelli et al., 2004;Wu et al., 2005;Zhang et al., 2005;Á lvarez-Muñ oz et al., 2009). The toxicity of surfactants is primarily determined by the ability of the surfactants to adsorb onto and penetrate the cell membrane of aquatic organisms (Rosen et al., 2001). ...

The effects of in vivo exposure of Mytilus galloprovincialis to two anionic surfactants (SDBS and SDS) on the molecular biomarker system were studied. After continuous exposure for 72 days, activities/levels of GST, GPx and GSH were significantly higher than in corresponding control groups following exposure to 3.000 mg/L SDS and SDBS. Activities of SOD and CAT were significantly inhibited by experimental SDBS (except CAT in 0.100 mg/L group), but not by SDS. Statistical analysis of enzyme activities/levels suggested that there were significant positive relationships between GST and GPx, and negative relationships were found between GSH and CAT, GSH and SOD. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) results showed that a greater genotoxic effect was observed for SDBS than for SDS. Based on the above results, the biomarker system of mussels can be affected by the two anionic surfactants (≥3.000 mg/L); it was more easily affected by SDBS than by SDS.

In the marine environment, most bivalve species base their reproduction on external fertilization. Hence, gametes and young stages face many threats, including exposure to plastic wastes which represent more than 80% of the debris in the oceans. Recently, evidence has been produced on the presence of nanoplastics in oceans, thus motivating new studies of their impacts on marine life. Because no information is available about their environmental concentrations, we performed dose-response exposure experiments with polystyrene particles to assess the extent of micro/nanoplastic toxicity. Effects of polystyrene with different sizes and functionalization (plain 2-μm, 500-nm and 50-nm; COOH-50 nm and NH2-50 nm) were assessed on three key reproductive steps (fertilization, embryogenesis and metamorphosis) of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Nanoplastics induced a significant decrease in fertilization success and in embryo-larval development with numerous malformations up to total developmental arrest. The NH2-50 beads had the strongest toxicity to both gametes (EC50 = 4.9 μg/mL) and embryos (EC50 = 0.15 μg/mL), showing functionalization-dependent toxicity. No effects of plain microplastics were recorded. These results highlight that exposures to nanoplastics may have deleterious effects on planktonic stages of oysters, presumably interacting with biological membranes and causing cyto/genotoxicity with potentially drastic consequences for their reproductive success.
... Samples are obtained in the form of a powder containing a wide range of particle size and shape, which would be expected to better mimic real particles in the environment. Such a powder would require dissolution in an appropriate solvent, which will also require testing for intrinsic toxicity before use (as done with Tween in Ostroumov, 2003;Paul-Pont et al., 2016). Because it is difficult to fine tune such milling, sieving may be necessary to remove an unwanted fraction, especially the smallest sizes such as NP, or to produce specific size classes according to the ingestion capacity of the studied animals. ...

Marine plastic pollution is a major environmental issue. Given their ubiquitous nature and small dimensions, ingestion of microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP) particles and their subsequent impact on marine life are a growing concern worldwide. Transfers along the trophic chain, including possible translocation, for which the hazards are less understood, are also a major preoccupation. Effects of MP ingestion have been studied on animals through laboratory exposure, showing impacts on feeding activity, reserve depletion and inflammatory responses, with consequences for fitness, notably reproduction. However, most experimental studies have used doses of manufactured virgin microspheres that may not be environmentally realistic. As for most ecotoxicological issues, the environmental relevance of laboratory exposure experiments has recently been debated. Here we review constraints and priorities for conducting experimental exposures of marine wildlife to microplastics based on the literature, feedback from peer reviewers and knowledge gained from our experience. Priorities are suggested taking into account the complexity of microplastics in terms of (i) aggregation status, surface properties and interactions with organic and inorganic materials, (ii) diversity of encountered particles types and concentrations, (iii) particle bioavailability and distribution in experimental tanks to achieve reproducibility and repeatability in estimating effects, and (iv) strict experimental procedures to verify the existence of genuine translocation. Relevant integrative approaches encompass a wide spectrum of methods from -omics to ecophysiological approaches, including modeling, are discussed to provide novel insights on the impacts of MP/NP on marine ecosystems from a long-term perspective. Knowledge obtained in this way would inform stakeholders in such a way as to help them mitigate impacts of the micro- and nano-plastic legacy.

The present study deals with the synthesis, characterization, physical and thermodynamic properties of a novel anionic surfactant derived from Sapindus laurifolius for its potential application against conventional non-biodegradable surfactants. The synthesized surfactant was characterized by FTIR, GC-MS, EDX and FE-SEM analyses. The surfactant showed good thermal stability at different temperatures as obtained from TGA studies. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) values were obtained by surface tensiometry measurements. DLS studies revealed the micelle structures of the CMC aggregates at higher concentrations. Low interfacial tension values were obtained at the oil–aqueous interfaces for surfactant solutions. The effect of temperature on the interfacial behaviour was also investigated. Thermodynamic studies showed that adsorption was more favoured in comparison to micellization for all systems. Foam stability studies were performed as a function of time and concentration by the Bartsch method. The surfactant also formed stable emulsions at concentrations near the CMC value. A comprehensive assessment of the thermal, interfacial, foaming and emulsifying properties of the soap-nut-based surfactant provides grounds for potential application in a wide range of industries.

Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules that reduce the surface tension of water and are extensively used for domestic and industrial purpose. Today it is increasingly desirable to replace synthetic surfactants with naturally derived molecules with a reduced environmental burden. About 60% of surfactants used enter the aquatic environment and cause immense damage. This study demonstrates the use of plant based natural surfactants as biodegradable and renewable alternatives. Traditionally used natural surfactants extracted from two plants, Pyagi Phool (Zephyranthes carinata Herbert.) and Ritha (Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn.) in aqueous solution have been studied. Surface tension, foaming and other relevant parameters have been investigated. While Ritha has been studied earlier, this is perhaps the first ever report on surfactant activities of Pyagi Phool. Ritha is acid balanced and exhibits a prominent surface tension reduction to 35.30 mN/m, high foaming, wetting and cleaning. Pyagi Phool is also acid balanced, reduces surface tension to 40.76 mN/m, possesses high viscosity and shows good dirt dispersion, making it a decent natural cleansing agent. The mechanism of foam formation affects the foaming ability and stability. Quantified dirt dispersion measurement shows that dirt dispersion reaches a maximum at Critical Micelle Concentration. Emulsion stability also decreases in the same region. The natural surfactants show better emulsification at higher concentrations as compared to synthetic surfactant. The results obtained suggest that both Ritha and Pyagi Phool have remarkable surface active properties and can be used as environmental friendly alternatives to synthetic surfactants.

The effects of polystyrene microbeads (micro-PS; mix of 2 and 6 μm; final concentration: 32 μg L−1) alone or in combination with fluoranthene (30 μg L−1) on marine mussels Mytilus spp. were investigated after 7 days of exposure and 7 days of depuration under controlled laboratory conditions. Overall, fluoranthene was mostly associated to algae Chaetoceros muelleri (partition coefficient Log Kp = 4.8) used as a food source for mussels during the experiment. When micro-PS were added in the system, a fraction of FLU transferred from the algae to the microbeads as suggested by the higher partition coefficient of micro-PS (Log Kp = 6.6), which confirmed a high affinity of fluoranthene for polystyrene microparticles. However, this did not lead to a modification of fluoranthene bioaccumulation in exposed individuals, suggesting that micro-PS had a minor role in transferring fluoranthene to mussels tissues in comparison with waterborne and foodborne exposures. After depuration, a higher fluoranthene concentration was detected in mussels exposed to micro-PS and fluoranthene, as compared to mussels exposed to fluoranthene alone. This may be related to direct effect of micro-PS on detoxification mechanisms, as suggested by a down regulation of a P-glycoprotein involved in pollutant excretion, but other factors such as an impairment of the filtration activity or presence of remaining beads in the gut cannot be excluded. Micro-PS alone led to an increase in hemocyte mortality and triggered substantial modulation of cellular oxidative balance: increase in reactive oxygen species production in hemocytes and enhancement of anti-oxidant and glutathione-related enzymes in mussel tissues. Highest histopathological damages and levels of anti-oxidant markers were observed in mussels exposed to micro-PS together with fluoranthene. Overall these results suggest that under the experimental conditions of our study micro-PS led to direct toxic effects at tissue, cellular and molecular levels, and modulated fluoranthene kinetics and toxicity in marine mussels.

The association of dye and surfactant in aqueous solution alters various properties of these molecules. Alcohol as a part of a water− alcohol mixed solvent is thought to affect dye surfactant interaction. A conductance measurement was performed for the interaction of cationic dye with two anionic surfactants in a water−alcohol mixed solvent. The specific conductance was measured at five different temperatures containing (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25) wt % of ethanol or propanol. On the basis of the theoretical model, the equivalent conductances and the equilibrium constants for the reactions were calculated. Thermodynamic parameters were also determined. The results showed that the tendency of ion-pair formation reduced with the percentage of alcohol in a solvent mixture due to decrease in the dielectric constant of the solvent. A nonlinear trend of thermodynamic parameters was observed. The formation of an ion-pair in the water−alcohol mixed solvent was an enthalpy driven process. The values of enthalpy for neutral red and sodium dodecyl sulfate (NR-SDS), and neutral red and anionic natural surfactant (NR-ANS) systems were in the range of −15 kJ mol−1 to −21 kJ mol−1 and −46 kJ mol−1 to −52 kJ mol−1. It was found that both long-range and short-range interactions are involved during dye surfactant interaction.

Surfactant toxicity has aroused a worldwide alert leading to various regulations on its usage and disposal. In this context much concern arises regarding the biodegradability and eco-friendliness of surfactants. Various reviews on surfactant and its toxicity are available; however there is a lack of a concise review covering surfactant types, primary and secondary toxicity of surfactants, evaluating the level of surfactant pollution worldwide. This chapter describes the safety concerns of surfactants on the aquatic system, terrestrial ecosystem and particularly on humans. We present remediation methods to solve surfactant contamination, such as ozonation, UV radiation, catalyst coupled autooxidation. Biological degradation of surfactants is highlighted with reference to the most commonly used anionic detergents sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS). Biodegradation pathways and mechanism are discussed. Green surfactants are presented. Finally the relevance and role of biosurfactants as alternatives to synthetic detergents is described.

The comparative study between synthetic and natural surfactants was carried out using spectrophotometry, conductometric and surface tension measurement. The value of critical micelle concentration for the natural surfactant was determined. The influence of temperature on conductance was observed and the interaction is found favorable at low temperature. The comparative interaction behavior of the surfactants was studied by reacting them individually with an oppositely charged dye. The concentration of both the surfactants was varied from pre to post micellar region to examine spectral changes. It was detected that the variation in the concentration of surfactant leads to the changes in the spectra of dye. The study showed that the initial increase in surfactant concentration leads to the formation of stable ion-pair, but increasing concentration beyond its critical micelle concentration caused the dissolution of dye surfactant aggregates. The surface tension measurement was also performed. The values for equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy were calculated based on the theoretical model. On the basis of these values, it is stated that the interaction between natural surfactant and dye is thermodynamically favorable and competitive. The use of natural surfactant in place of synthetic surfactant is suggested as an inexpensive, environmental friendly and cleaner substitute.

Drilling fluids having a few ecological footprints are extremely desirable, particularly for drilling in the highly complex shale formation zone. In the current work, an anionic surfactant was synthesized in the laboratory using soybean oil and characterized based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA), and critical micelle concentration (CMC) value. The synthesized surfactant was used to formulate and stabilize environmentally-friendly oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion drilling muds, having soybean oil itself as a dispersed phase, for drilling shale formation. A comparative study on the rheological and filtration properties of soybean oil based emulsion mud systems and a conventional diesel oil based emulsion mud system, prepared in the presence of the synthesized surfactant, was also performed. The properties of soybean oil based emulsion mud systems were found to be superior to diesel oil based emulsion mud. The effect of varying oil content and mud additives (i.e., gum acacia or xanthan gum, and bentonite) on the rheological and filtration properties of drilling mud was also investigated in detail in order to achieve an optimum formulation. Considering the high-temperature application, the thermal stability of rheological and filtration properties of developed muds was investigated up to a temperature of 125 °C, and muds were found to be having excellent thermal stability. The developed emulsion mud systems were also found to be showing an excellent tolerance towards mud constituents like salt (KCL). The lubricity of the mud was evaluated, and it appeared that the soyabean oil based mud possesses an excellent lubricity compared to that of diesel oil based mud. The lubricity of the mud increases significantly with the increase in oil concentration. The shale recovery test and core flooding study, respectively, suggested a high shale recovery performance and low formation damage effect for the developed soybean oil-in-water emulsion mud system. The flow curve of developed emulsion muds depicted the excellent shear-thinning behavior, which is a desirable feature in drilling mud. The mud formulated with a composition of 80 vol% water, 20 vol% soybean oil, 0.3 wt% PAC-LVG, 0.4 wt% synthesized surfactant, 2.5 wt% bentonite, and 0.3 wt% gum acacia was found to be behaving as a Cross-model fluid.

One of the most important global tasks, if not the most important, is to provide the inhabitants of our planet with high-quality drinking water. Here we reviewed the recent advances in the application of nanoporous materials for wastewater treatment, considering a very special case of heavy metal ions adsorption. We considered nanoporous activated carbon sorbents to be used as an inexpensive analog of zeolites and polymeric materials for the preparation of filtration membranes and to be approaches to nanofiltration, adsorptive separation of heavy metal ions and discussed considering the possible fundamentals and mechanisms of adsorption. In addition, the preparation and properties of noble metal nanoparticles were considered as promising components of nanomembranes with antibacterial potential.

Bryozoans are sessile filter feeding organisms able to play an important role in the cycling of organic matter in freshwater ecosystems. However, the quality and quantity of food particles ingested by bryozoans are still not well-known. Therefore, an experimental design was performed in order to investigate the clearance rate (CR), food selection and efficiency of assimilation by the freshwater bryozoan species Plumatella geimermassardi. P. geimermassardi was collected from the Colfiorito Marsh (Umbrian Natural Park, Italy), during summer. A higher grazing rate of suspended and dissolved solids was evidenced in the colonies collected in June, July, than in August. Food selection and assimilation of phytoplankton were determined. The algal species ingested as diet food item and those excreted with the faecal pellets were taxonomically identified. The results provide new information on CR and food selection by P. geimermassardi and enhance knowledge on its biology. Insights on feeding preferences by bryozoan species can provide valid information about their feasible distribution and abundance.

Breb. ТДТМА 0.5 мг/л ингибировал фильтрацию воды коловратками Brachionus angularis Gosse и изъятие ими из воды клеток Chlorella sp. http://istina.msu.ru/publications/article/1064343/ Download • 143 Reads Mentioned in project: Citation analysis of a series of relevant publications, topics: environmental science, general and aquatic ecology, selected issues of biology, authored, co-authored by Sergei A. Discovery of a new fact that detergents and surfactants (at a sublethal concentration) provide environmental hazard to the important group of important zooplankton organisms, namely rotifers. It is a first paper to report that a synthetic surfactant [exemplified by a cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA)] inhibited feeding rate (filtration activity) of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus). Doklady Biological Sciences. 2003; 390: 252-255. Effect of a cationic amphiphilic compound on rotifers. Ostroumov S.A., Walz N., Rusche R. (Moscow, Russia; Berlin, Germany); PMID: 12940156 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]; DETAILED ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: Welfare of the biosphere depends on filter-feeders that contribute to making water clean and transparent. Important new facts on the hazard of man-made damage to the beneficial function of rotifers, which are the plankton filter-feeders, were discovered. For the first time, it was found that a chemical pollutant inhibits filtration activity of rotifers. As a chemical pollutant, a representative of synthetic surfactants was studied. The study featured an advanced technique that allows a precise measurement of the filtration rate on the basis of measuring the rate of removal of algal cells from water by rotifers. The experiment was run in the following system: the two-species culture of rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) and algae (Nannochloropsis limnetica; Eustigmatophyceae) was studied in a two-stage turbidostat (temperature 20 °C) as described by Walz et al. (1997) with some modifications. Dilution rate (the higher the filtration activity of rotifers, the higher the dilution rate) was measured in the turbidostat. As a model of a chemical pollutant, the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) was added to the water of the turbidostat. On the basis of previous studies (Ostroumov, 2000), the concentration of TDTMA was 0.5 mg/L. Dynamics of the dilution rate before and after addition of the chemical was monitored. The dilution rate decreased after the addition of TDTMA. Also, a comparison of the dilution rate in the experimental turbidostat (with the surfactant) with the control turbidostat (without the chemical) was made. Under conditions of the presence of TDTMA the dilution rate was lower than in the control turbidostat. The lower dilution rate means a lower filtration and grazing activity of the population of the rotifers. The results are in accord with the hypothesis that the cationic surfactant TDTMA can inhibit the filtering activity of populations of rotifers. The results support the conclusions of previous publications, in which analogous effects of surfactants on another major group of filter-feeders (the bottom-dwelling bivalve mollusks) were discovered (Doklady of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2001, 380, p. 847-849; 2002, vol. 382, p.138-141). Sergei A. Ostroumov. Abstract: Studies of ecology of living organisms lead to a more profound understanding of the intricate processes of the Earth’s biosphere functioning. The mankind is still far from establishing harmonious relations with it. However, permanently progressing destruction of natural complexes by the technogenic civilization necessitates some new revolutionary approaches to their preservation. That is why it is so important to study the relationships and interactions between living organisms. One of the most important roles in this “orchestra” is played by numerous invertebrates which filter the water and improve water quality. To what degree chemical pollutants modify and endanger their capacity to do this vital ecosystems service? Welfare of the biosphere depends on filter-feeders that contribute to making water clean and transparent. Important new facts on the hazard of man-made damage to the beneficial function of rotifers, which are the plankton filter-feeders, were discovered. Paper was published, in which for the first time, it was found that a chemical pollutant inhibits filtration activity of rotifers. As a chemical pollutant, a representative of synthetic surfactants was studied. The study featured an advanced technique that allows precise measurement of the filtration rate on the basis of measuring the rate of removal of algal cells from water by rotifers. The experiment was run in the following system: the two-species culture of rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) feeding on the algal species (Nannochloropsis limnetica; Eustigmatophyceae) was studied in a two-stage turbidostat (temperature 20 °C) as described by Walz et al. (1997) with some modifications. Dilution rate (the higher the filtration activity of rotifers, the higher the dilution rate) was monitored in the turbidostat. Under conditions of the addition of TDTMA the dilution rate was lower than in the control turbidostat. The lower dilution rate means a lower filtration and grazing activity of the population of the rotifers. The results are in accord with the hypothesis that the cationic surfactant TDTMA can inhibit the filtering activity of populations of rotifers. The results support the conclusions of previous publications, in which analogous effects of surfactants on another major group of filter-feeders (the bottom-dwelling bivalve mollusks) were discovered (Doklady of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2001, 380, pp. 847-849; 2002, vol. 382, pp.138-141). www.springerlink.com/index/R3126462K122M13T.pdf; DOI10.1023/A:1024417903077; Key words: effects, cationic amphiphilic substance, rotifers, two-species culture, rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus, algae Nannochloropsis limnetica, turbidostat, filtration activity, cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide TDTMA, grazing activity, filtering activity of populations, filter-feeders, chemical pollution, effects of pollutants, sublethal concentration, trophic interactions, man-made effects, anthropogenic, new environmental hazards × Surfactants × Zooplankton × Plankton × Cationic Surfactants × German-Russian scientific partnership × Germany-Russia partnership × Berlin - Moscow scientific cooperation × Environmental Toxicology × Chemical Water Pollution × Hazard Assessment × New Methods Download 218 Reads 8 Citations Part of the project: Building sustainable future: top important issues of protection of the environment, nature conservation. Translated into English, published as another article: Effect of amphiphilic chemicals on filter-feeding marine organisms. - Doklady Biological Sciences. 2001. Volume 378, Numbers 1-6. p. 248-250. For the first time, the marine bivalve mollusks, the oysters Crassostrea gigas were used as the test-organisms in bioassay of some amphiphilic chemicals, namely, synthetic surfactants and detergents. This is the first paper to discover and report negative effects of synthetic surfactants and chemical mixtures (detergents) on water filtering activity of Crassostrea gigas. As a result, under the effect of the surfactants and detergents the removal of suspended particles from water by the oysters decreased. The amphiphilic chemicals (synthetic surfactants and detergents) are a new type of chemical pollutants that pollute the aquatic environment including oceans, seas and estuaries. The new data discovered a novel type of anthropogenic hazard to aquaculture of shellfish (aqua-farming, mariculture of oysters). http://sites.google.com/site/2001dbs378p248effammaroyst/; http://www.scribd.com/doc/49065593; http://www.scribd.com/doc/59417067/; DOI 10.1023/A:1019270825775. Top-down control is an important type of interspecies interactions in food webs. It is especially important for aquatic ecosystems. Phytoplankton grazers contribute to the top-down control of phytoplankton populations. The paper is focused on the role of benthic filter feeders in the control of plankton populations as a result of water filtering and the removal of cells of plankton from the water column. New data on the inhibitory effects of surfactants and detergents on benthic filter-feeders (Unio tumidus, U. pictorum, Mytilus galloprovincialis, M. edulis and Crassostrea gigas) are presented and discussed. Importance and efficiency of that approach to the problems of eutrophication and water self-purification is pointed out. Chemical pollution may pose a threat to the natural top-down control of phytoplankton and water self-purification process. The latter is considered an important prerequisite for sustainable use of aquatic resources. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/13429633_Biological_filtering; S. A. Ostroumov. Biological filtering and ecological machinery for self-purification and bioremediation in aquatic ecosystems: towards a holistic view. Rivista di Biologia. 1998. 91(2): 221-232. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/13429633 ; According to one of the approaches to the definition of criteria for the phenomenon of life, the key attribute is the ability of the system for some self-regulating and self-supporting. Part of such holistic functions of aquatic ecosystems as self-regulating and self-supporting is their cleaning the water via a multitude of various mechanisms. The goal of this paper is to present some fundamental elements of the theory of ecosystem self-purification which emphasizes the importance of the four functional biological filters that are instrumental in purification and upgrading the quality of water in aquatic ecosystems. These functional filters are: (1) direct water filtering by aquatic organisms that are filter-feeders; (2) the filter (represented mainly by communities of aquatic plants/periphyton) which prevents input of pollutants and biogenic elements (N, P) from land into water bodies; (3) the filter (represented by benthic organisms) which prevents re-entry of pollutants and biogenic elements from the bottom sediments into the water; (4) the filter (represented by microorganisms attached to particles which are suspended in the water) that provides microbiological treatment of water column. New experimental data by the author reveal the role of man-made effects on the ecological machinery which purifies water. The analysis and discussion lead to the holistic theory of the natural process of bioremediation of aquatic ecosystems.
