Priorities and strategies for sustainable development in tourism

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

One of the leading industries nowadays is tourism, which distinguishes itself by competitiveness, the dual market structure and by its capacity of growth. In order to respond to the demands of tourists and to have a competitive advantage company owners need to adopt sustainable tourism practices by innovating. This study seeks to identify what practices are adopted and implemented by some companies from the North East region of Romania, the level of innovativeness, which are their priorities and what are the determinants. A survey was used and it was distributed to 141 respondents that activate in the tourism industry. There were analysed the responses to 22 of the survey’s Likert scale items, exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify which are the external factors that influence sustainable practices and the types of strategies alongside Anova test was conducted to see if sustainable practices are adopted for the same reasons or there are differences and Mann-Whitney U Test to determine differences in the choose of priorities.

... The business models that embrace the principles of sustainable development currently have different strategies that are geared toward innovation. They are grouped into eco-innovation business models, with their core structure promoting sustainable practices and services, and their number is increasing [48]. ...
... That is, they attain success in three directions: Economic profit, people (social), and planet (ecological). They no longer only seek economic profitability; instead, their purpose is to respond to social needs and seek societal benefits [48]. Sustainable development can be a source of success, innovation, and profitability for companies [49]. ...

How the sharing economy can move toward sustainable development is an important research topic. This paper attempts to explore the mediating effect of ecosystem strategy on the relationship between sharing characteristics and sustainable development performance by applying the structural equation model and questionnaire survey of 90 sharing-economy enterprises. The research results show that the ecosystem strategy plays a complete mediating role in the relationship between sharing characteristics and environmental performance, a partial mediating role in the relationship between sharing characteristics and social performance, and an insignificant mediating role in the relationship between sharing characteristics and economic performance. The research results provide new knowledge for research on the sustainable development of the sharing economy, which are of certain reference value for the sustainable development of sharing-economy enterprises, and government’s support to and supervision of the sharing economy.

This paper provides an examination of tourism in the New Member States of the European Union in the period 2007-2015, assessing the importance of tourism for the New Member States economy and the factors that might affect this industry. Considerable research has been devoted to tourism in the developed countries from Europe, but rather less attention has been paid to tourism in the Central-Eastern Europe, the New Member States region. In this regard, the paper will start with an overview of the current state of the literature on this topic, section that precedes a presentation of European bodies and policies in the travel and tourism field. Time series will be analyzed in order to identify the key countries for tourism in the region, according to the number of international arrivals, number of international overnight stays and exports in trade. Tourism contribution and importance for the economy, key destinations in the region, EU and state-level policies in the tourism sector, as well as main challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector will be addressed, focusing on the three key countries identified, Poland, Czech Republic and Croatia, that offer tourists unique, traditional experiences, focusing on niche markets, rather than on mass-market tourism.

This paper studies the competitive implications of hotels' participation in a Costa Rican voluntary environmental program established by the government and identifies institutional factors that motivate participation in this initiative. By studying service industry firms in a developing country, this research offers the opportunity to compare the conclusions obtained by previous empirical work on voluntary environmental initiatives, nearly all of which have focused on manufacturing firms operating in developed countries. The main theoretical perspectives on the relationship between corporate environmental management and competitiveness offer contradictory conclusions. In general, the environmental economics perspective argues that there is a trade-off between environmental and competitiveness goals. On the other hand, the proactive environmental management perspective posits that appropriate environmental protection strategies can enhance firm competitiveness. This study approaches this controversy by using resource-based theory and institutional theory. The RBV argues that participation in voluntary environmental programs can generate differentiation advantages for firms operating in environmentally sensitive markets because these programs allow firms to develop credible 'green' reputations that are rare, difficult to create, costly to imitate, and that provide enhanced value to environmentally aware consumers. Additionally, the paper proposes that participation in voluntary environmental initiatives is not only the result of competitive economic rationality but is also affected by institutional factors. Cross-sectional data were collected for a sample of 164 hotels operating in Costa Rica. Environmental performance data were obtained from the voluntary Sustainable Tourism Certification Program (STC Program). The results indicate that hotels with higher performance in the STC Program gain differentiation advantages that result in significant price premiums. It was also found that participation in the STC Program was not only motivated by economic rationality, but also by institutional factors such as trade association membership and level of regulatory oversight.

Sustainable tourism development is now a necessity of time. All the parties involved in tourism should participate in efforts to sustainable tourism development. Sustainability, as the best way of doing business today, is a new concept in the tourism sector and sustainable tourism practices can be considered as a new type of innovation in the tourism industry. Therefore knowledge of the factors affecting tourism businesses to integrate sustainability in their activities is critical. Without this type of information, we are limited in our ability to design tools that work in the future to mitigate barriers and increase motivations tourism businesses to adopt sustainable tourism practices in their activity. Factors’ influencing in the integration of sustainable practices into business activities is very subject discussed in different industries and different scientific disciplines after the late 80's. However, a limited number of studies addressed perspective of tourism businesses to adopt sustainable tourism practices. These studies have used different theoretical models. This paper undertakes the analysis of these models from the review of literatures, giving their advantages and limitations in the study of the factors influencing businesses to adopt sustainable tourism practices. After analysis, the paper finally concludes that Rogers's theory on adaptation and diffusion of innovation is a suitable theoretical model in the study of factors influencing the adoption of sustainable tourism practices in tourism businesses.

Over the past years, the issue of sustainable entrepreneurship has coagulated multiple research interests due to the fact that it integrates three main pillars, namely human resource management (people) and the concerns for planet protection and for the economic effectiveness sustained by profit. The rapid social and economic transformations have imposed the assumption of an integrative perspective, especially to the organizations oriented to ensure their viability on the market and industry. Hereby, researchers believe that such an approach should be indicative of start-ups which should advance feasible solutions to market imperfections through innovative products and services and through effective marketing models. Against this backdrop, the present paper aims to investigate the correlations between sustainable entrepreneurship and the marketing types articulated by the Contemporary Marketing Practices (CMP) research program, relying on a questionnaire-based survey conducted with 104 start-up entrepreneurs in Romania. As the findings show, the discussed marketing types often discretionary correlate in practice with the most important dimension of sustainability that is people.

This paper problematizes the terms “sustainable tourism and satisfaction”. It conceptualizes sustainable tourism as a future trend in tourism and argues that although sustainable tourism and satisfaction frequently function as a means of tourist evaluation and experience for attractions, their social significance extends far beyond current tourism planning. This paper uses empirical material from 642 tourists who had sustainable tourism experiences and gathers samples from several natural resource conservation zones in Taiwan. If tourists feel a sense of novelty about a tourist destination, they may increase their sustainable experience and further enhance their willingness and satisfaction toward sustainable tourism. In addition, sustainable tourism studies suggest that novelty enhances emotional excitement, which in turn leads to more overall valuable evaluations and higher satisfaction. This paper tests both direct and indirect mechanisms simultaneously using structural equation modeling methods. The results support the predictions.
