Martorell's ulcers are hard-to-heal leg ulcers typically accompanied by a significant elevation of blood pressure and severe pain. This case study examines the use of an innovative technology, wireless microcurrent stimulation, for the healing of a Martorell's ulcer. Using wireless microcurrent stimulation, study authors managed to reduce the size...

Clinical experience with a new electrical stimulation (ES) technique, the wireless micro current stimulation (WMCS), for the treatment of chronic wounds is described. WMCS transfers the current to any surface wound from a distance, by using oxygen's and nitrogen's ability to exchange electrons. We studied 47 patients with hard-to-heal wounds. Patie...

1,261 arterial reconstructions concerning the pelvis level and the lower limbs were performed in our department between 1970 and 1981. 510 of all patients (35.4%) were diabetics, a vascular reconstruction could be performed in 337 diabetic patients, in 173 an amputation was unavoidable. 62% of all diabetics underwent a bypass operation, 38% an aort...

Summary We report on 331 colon resections. The postoperative mortality due to leakage of the anastomosis was 1.7%. Dehiscence can be caused by bacterial infections, disturbances of microcirculation, catabolism, clotting disorders and immunological defects. Meticulous dissection of the bowel and the suture technique is of great importance to avoid i...

Between 1970 and 1981 a total of 79 surgical interventions were performed for acute ischemia of the upper extremities. The cause of occlusion in 70 patients was an arterial embolism, mainly affecting the brachial or radial artery. Embolectomy was successful in restoring the patency of the occluded vessel, regardless of its location or the duration...

Summary Between 1977 and 1981, in 248 diabetics 147 vascular reconstructions were performed (62 % bypass operations, 38% aortoiliac reconstructions) and 101 patients had limbs amputated. The diabetic group underwent surgery 3 years later, and had more risk factors. There were twice as many females as males. The possibility of deterioration was thre...

Summary Two different surgical techniques were employed in a total of 132 gastrectomies. In 110 cases an esophagojejunostomy was performed using Graham's technique, in 22 cases Roux anastomosis was performed. The patient's age was not an absolute contraindication for gastrectomy. Primary lethality was 8.3 %. Suture insufficiency occurred in 2.7 % o...

Iliofemoral venous thrombosis may result in pulmonary embolism or a post-thrombotic syndrome. The incidence of pulmonary embolism after nonsurgical treatment is 10%, that of post-thrombotic syndrome 60%. The use of fibrinolysis is limited because of numerous contraindications. One hundred and sixty five iliofemoral venous thrombectomies were perfor...

Summary The level of amputations for arterial occlusive disease of the leg is often discussed. We reviewed 230 amputations at the lower extremity performed on 197 patients during the years 1978–1980: 40% were distal to the knee joint, 72% of which healed; 28% had to be reamputated at a more proximal level (31% of the toe amputations, 22% of the met...

Summary In 1978-1981, 50 patients with aortoiliac occlusive disease of stages Ilb, III, and IV with severe concomitant diseases underwent vascular reconstruction. In neuroleptanalgesia, in 31 cases an aortobifemoral prosthesis was implanted, and 23 aortofemoral bypass operations with extraperitoneal approach were performed. One patient had an amput...

Summary Within 2 years, 10 patients had recurrent pulmonary embolism. Treatment was Cava-Clipping by Adams and de Weese. No recurrent embolism was noted. In one case the patient died postoperatively of pulmonary infection. In all cases we had preoperative pulmonary perfusion scan and pulmonary angiograms.
