... Every sample was passed through a series of metal sieves ranging from 4 mm to 500 μm, from which organisms were collected, stored in Ziplock bags, and preserved at − 20 • C until processing. On defrosting, organisms were separated from the organic matter, counted, and identified to the lowest taxonomic resolution possible with the use of a dissection microscope (Nikon SMZ1500, Tokyo, Japan) and a series of identification keys (Askew, 2004;Brooks and Cham, 2018;Dobson et al., 2012;Edington and Hildrew, 1995;Elliot et al., 1988;Elliott and Mann, 1979;Friday, 1988;Macan, 1977;Savage and Macan, 1989;Wallace et al., 2003). Most taxa were identified to family or genus level except for three subfamilies (Chirnominae, Orthocladiinae and Tanypodinae) and three species (Asellus aquaticus, Linnaeus, 1758; Libellula depressa, Linnaeus, 1758; Valvata piscinalis, O. F. Müller, 1774). ...
