    Sadly I don't know of any solar cell technology either in use or under development that is going to substantially undercut the cost of silicon, for two reasons. The investment required will be at least as much as has been put into silicon - maybe a billion US$ over 40 years, and secondly because the photoactive layer is now such a small part of a solar panel making it cheaper will not have a strong effect on the cost of the panel. I am not saying that we shouldn't do it, but be aware of what you're up against in silicon! It will not be easy to replace it on a large scale. Maybe perovskite cells integrated into the roof structure (Building integrated PV) will do the job. We just don't know.

    Karolina: There are great differences between academic institutions and private corporations.  There are both private and public academic institutions.  Whyte (1969) described a dean search process at Cornell, and pointed out how hard it was to tell who had power in the process.  You also have to consider things like "shared governance,"  "academic freedom," and "tenure," which do not exist in corporations (Caplow and McGee, 1958).  I have found the references listed below to be of help.     As this is a mosquito borne disease, fumigation of vessels entering the country, inland mosquito control measures, extensive patient centered epidemiological investigation within country (contact tracing, personal protection by using repellents during day time, fumigation of certain radius around patients residence, container/breeding places removal, early medical attention for patient with symptoms) will limit it becoming an epidemic in a country.  In my opinion it will affect tropical countries rather than temperate countries as for Dengue. Outbreak response strategies applied for Dengue can be applied for this disease too.

    Help with Feynman's(thought) experiment with electrons?

    I read his description of the experiment but I still haven't understood as to how the results can't be predicted with "classical physics", what I mean is that electron gun which he has assumed throws out electrons randomly and since we do not know the initial conditions( because of randomness) we can't predict the exact trajectory , and therefore we can talk  only of probability, but I see that Feynman says constantly that "we can't really predict where the electron would end up being" but ain't that because of the random nature of electron emitting device??

    Obviously i am wrong somewhere but I can't catch it?

    No, it is impossible to emit ONE electromagnetic wave in a spherical geometry. Just because no electromagnetic emitter allows that. Polarisations still exist. And remember of the hedge-hogs theorem...

    And if it is an individual electromagnetic wave, it is perfectly directional, because its absorber is not every place, but at a defined location.

    For obtaining a spherical symmetry, as in the Lambert's law, you must have many uncoordinated emitters, emitting to many many absorbers amongst many many many many many many potential absorbers.

    Why nobody see that Higgs boson and gravitational waves are the pure theoretical failures?

    Higgs boson does not interact with gluons which give energy for 99% of proton mass. How the Higgs boson gives mass to the proton, nobody has no clear answer. Why are we closing eyes and tolerating this model which does not have a minimal correspondence with physical existence? Energy and mass are both inherent physical properties of every particle. No particle can give mass to another particle; this is a complete misunderstanding. Higgs boson  does not prove anything, Higgs boson is artificially made flux of energy and nothing more. 

    Energy and mass are both inherent physical properties of every particle. They have the origin in the diminished energy density of quantum vacuum.  A given particle cannot be examined without this diminished energy density of quantum vacuum which determines its energy and mass. The idea that particles exist in an empty space deprived of physical properties is the biggest theoretical failure of physics since its existence. It has led  to the idea of Higgs field and gravitational waves which are both pure theoretical failure. No particle can give mass to another particle; this is a complete misunderstanding. Higgs boson  does not prove anything, Higgs boson is artificially made flux of energy and nothing more. And no wave can transmit gravity.

    Ferent I read your paper. Gravity has no speed, gravity is immediate, I do not see much sense in your model of coupling photon and graviton.

    Does any one know any clinical study comparing differences in drug plasma level taken from peripheral vein and AV fistula in patients on hemodialysis?

    The patients with chronic renal failure have to undergo hemodialysis. These patients usually have AV fistula. The question is if the blood can be collected from this AV fistula on the beginning, during or after the end of hemodialysis in order to avoid further puncture of vein. I suppose that values like mineralogram or pH will be completely different between these two approaches. But what about drug levels? Does anyone know any study dealing with this issue?

    There is no difference of drug levels known between venous blood and blood from an arteriovenous fistula or av-shunt in hemodialysis patients. However, there can be a difference between the arterial and venous line during hemodialysis becouse of extracorpororeal drug elimination by hemodialysis or plasmapheresis.

    To make 1 litre of solution with final concentration 10 g/l, take 10/0.35= 28.571 g of the peroxide and dilute with water to 1 litre. This is assuming it is mass-percent, w/w!

    Alternatively, use the density (1.13 g/ml) to get 25.284 ml peroxide, dilute to 1 l.

    As far as I'm aware, the recent detection of Zika virus within saliva is the first reporting of its kind - very little is known at this stage as to if ZKV infection can be transmitted from human to human through saliva itself, and further testing would be required to determine this.

    Relating back to your question, I imagine that it would depend on what the viral load is within saliva compared to serum/traditional sample techniques, and if this is a high enough titre to be detected consistently. 
    Another thing to bear in mind is that viral RNA tends to be easier to detect in serum during the first 7 days of illness; viremia decreases over time. We would need to determine at what stage of zika infection viremia is detectable in saliva. It would indeed be interesting to see if testing of saliva samples result in a higher sensitivity/detection rate compared to traditional serum testing by RT-PCR.

    Do scientists tend to gain preferably informations which confirm their opinion and fade out contradictory statements?

    I heard (Süddeutsche Zeitung, February 6/7th 2016), that people like to sit in a "reverberation chamber", they are consuming only informations which confirm their opinions, because it feels good to be liked or confirmed.

    The social networks tend to strenghten this behavior, especially with the help of new filter systems, which gain new connections by evaluating the personal data of the user.

    Is this contradictory to objective thinking and having an open mind?

    I think that it is an excellent sign, that RG contributers are debating this issue so thoroughly. I find it hard to add anything new! However, going back to the original question, I would re-iterate that the use of any filtering techniques that use algorithms may have undesirable results. Algorithms are fine when operating in a defined environment with specific data but they do not work well when in a fuzzy environment with incomplete date. You can use fuzzy algorithms, true, but the results will be even less predictable.

    I think that only human beings can adequately monitor the literature of other human beings as only they have the tremendous background of knowledge built up from childhood and life experience which provides a basis for making contextually appropriate selections. Try putting all that in a database - and good luck to whoever has a go!  So, viva RG!

    Is Heidegger's departure from Husserl due to Heidegger's turn to metaphysics? If so, doesn't that make Heidegger's critique of Husserl irrelevant?
    Husserl makes it quite clear that phenomenology is not metaphysics, and as such Husserl only tends to the structures that idealism provides, and the incorporation of real experience into said structures that could lead us towards a transcendental intersubjectivity. Husserl's phenomenological reduction allows existence to be whatever it may be, and it would not change the structures of such consciousness. So Heidegger's metaphysical tendencies makes his criticism completely irrelevant since it comments on Husserl's science as though it were a philosophy, when pure phenomenology is designed and intended not to be a philosophy, but rather the science of philosophy which is a world of difference. Or did I get this all wrong?

    What Aswin proposes makes sense of course, but I am afraid the amount of coated metals will not be high because there is no "glue" on the graphite surface which would hold metals. I am not a synthetic chemist, therefore just wondering about 2 possibilities: 1) either to grow graphite around metal nanoparticles in solution, so that graphite walls embrace metal particles and trap them physically; 2) here is one PhD thesis when functionalisation of carbon nanotubes surface was done. https://depositonce.tu-berlin.de/handle/11303/4402   (file on the down part as pdf).  Would it be possible to modify graphite surface as well?   Sorry about not suggesting something concrete, just some ideas

    Relaxation test - Abaqus?

    Hello everybody,

                   My task is to simulate non-linear viscoelasticity. For now, I have written a UMAT based on Schapery's model. To verify it, I am trying to perform relaxation test in Abaqus. These are the steps that I follow

    1. I create a 1D - Truss element. In Step - 1 (Static, General), I fix the left end of the beam and apply a small displacement (5 units) to the right end for 1 Second.
    2. In Step 2, (again Static, General), I fix both the nodes for a time period of 10 Second.

        I use a single element mesh on the 1D Truss of element type (T2D2). Attached is my input file.

    I would really like to hear from people and please correct me if I am wrong.

    What would Edmund Burke say about Human Rights?

    There has been much attention to the political thought of Edmund Burke of late, and this arises, in part, out of the long felt tension between Burke on the American crisis of the late 18th-century, Burke on Irish emancipation and Burke on India, vs. Burke as the most famous opponent of  the French Revolution. One key to this is to understand Burke on rights. He makes many appeals to rights, and clearly gives them a high moral status, yet he opposes doctrines of "abstract" rights, and this comes out in his criticisms of the French Revolution.

    As an opening to discussion, I recommend the following short (45 Min.) video from Trinity College, Dublin, given by the British philosopher Onora O'Neill:

    This talk is an excellent probing of Burke on this issue, and some considerable sympathy with Burke is expressed at the end of the talk.

    The chief text will surely be Burke's Reflections of the Revolution in France which is widely available on line, e.g.:

    However, it is doubtful that anyone can understand Burke on rights and his relationship to contemporary doctrines of human rights, without broader readings. I expect we will need to add some further texts later on, if this question evokes some interest.

    I thought this question might interest you.

    But you will have noticed that O'Neill has it, in her talk, that Burke is a defender of human rights, and that sets her problem or tension in Burke, between his defending rights in some cases and apparently discounting them in others. True, he discounts "abstract rights" and "metaphysical speculations" applied to policy decisions. But he defends his alternative conception. I thought O'Neill pretty persuasive in her talk.

    Though as you have it, quoting Burke, I think, "liberties and the restrictions vary with times and circumstances and admit to infinite modifications," this might be taken as a very long view of human history, and not a description of the constitutional order which Burke defends, dating from the Glorious Revolution. Henry VIII, e.g., took many "liberties" and applied "restrictions" which Burke thought despotic. 

    Interesting that you point to or allege "politicization of the courts" and "legalization of political ideology." This definitely sounds like something that Burke would have opposed. I think of the abolition of the notorious "Star Chamber," for instance. Might you expand on this theme at bit?

    What are the sources of your quotations? Knowing that might be helpful.

      ABSTRACT: The development of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is continuing in order to increase the energy transfer efficiency of the solar photovoltaic system. This paper provides a review of the conventional maximum power point tracking techniques that is enhanced by the presentation of a new technique. The new method is based on a genetic neural algorithm in order to predict the closest point to the maximum power point (MPP), which will be the kickoff point of the search process. Not only does the new technique start the search process from the nearest point to the MPP, but also the developed search algorithm is very fast. Consequently, the time taken to reach the MPP is reduced. In order to determine the new MPPT performance, a complete photovoltaic generator system is modeled and simulated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK package. Simulation results show that the new technique reaches the MPP in less than 100 sample times compared to tens of thousands of samples for conventional methods. Furthermore, the new technique reaches directly the target MPP with small deviation from the intended values. Consequently, the new technique has a significant improvement in energy extraction efficiency from the photovoltaic array to the load, in addition to higher tracking speed and system stability compared to the conventional ones.

    Hello everyone, I am evaluating the graft vs leukemia effect in chimeric mice. The chimeric mice were created by transplantation of hematopoeitic stem cells (H2kb) of wild type mice into BALB/c mice (H2d) the mice are now mixed chimeric and i am investigating if the T cells of H2b origin capable of rejecting the H2d leukemia.

    My plan is to inject the CFSE labelled WEHI3 (H2d leukemic cells) into the chimeras and observe if the leukemia has proliferated or diminished by FACS analysis.

    Richard Feynman said, "If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics.” Is the problem that the human intellect is incapable of understanding some aspects of quantum mechanics or are we merely missing a model which will make the mysteries of quantum mechanics conceptually understandable? Another quote attributed to Feynman is “Shut-up and calculate”. This implies that a student is being told to suppress their natural desire for conceptual understanding and instead work on mathematical analysis. Do you feel that some questions are beyond our intellectual capacity to successfully answer? If so, perhaps you should identify these to stimulate discussion. For example, questions about the composition of fundamental particles or string theory strings are often treated as unanswerable. What are your thoughts?

    Agostino, make a single calculation without first making a selection. If you can, which we both know it is impossible to do, then and only then will your papers be based on reality. Until then, your work is nothing more than speculation.

    Since we are entertaining the delusion "about the relation between Mathematics and 'Reality' does not interest the Scientific Community", let's explore this assumption shall we?

    If objects of scale and locality are fundamental of our physical reality then how can such logic be correct if it cannot answer the following question:

    How much does a direct or indirect selection weigh, what are their scales, and where was the mutually exclusive selection variable you used to read these words located when you used it?

    What this means is that the logic we use to perceive reality is based on effects causing effects which says nothing about how effects come to exist. Logic means nothing if it is not reflective of reality in its entirety.

    Case in point,

    Ho - If the two acts of selection are not necessary for your existence then you can safely conduct the Final Selection Thought Experiment in real life and continue your existence.

    Ha - If the two acts of selection are necessary for your existence then you cannot conduct the Final Selection Thought Experiment in real life in order to continue your existence.

    Final Selection Thought Experiment:

    Let's say that one morning upon awakening you find yourself absent of the ability to choose, i.e., completely paralyzed. This means you cannot choose to move your body whatsoever. You cannot choose to take in any fluids. You cannot choose to take in any nourishment. You cannot choose to relieve yourself, et cetera. Nor can you have others indirectly choose for you. The outcome is absolute. The effect of a physical system to no longer have the capacity to make direct selections is certain death.

    The assumption that selection is some sort of option, a freedom of will, is unsubstantiated by the fact that this predetermined mechanism we call choice is how energy works, which is a fundamental necessity, not a metaphysical option, of our physical existence. In other words, when the origin variables of selection come to exist (cause), energy exists (effect), for they are one and the same (cause and effect).

    When anyone talks about his or her theoretical calculations without addressing how they are able to do so in the first place, they are guilty of omitted-variable bias. When experimenters fail to take into account which selection variables caused the effects observed in their experiments they can only obtain false-positive results since there are two mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive origin variables in Nature without which not a single experiment can be conducted.

      ABSTRACT: The current scientific methodology is based on the paradigm of second cause logic by placing cause second to an observable physical effect, i.e., the existence of an effect causing the existence of an effect. The methodology of successfully predicting effects and the repetition of the predicted effects to serve as an indication of causality necessitates that causality is a singular mechanism in order for such a method to be valid. Conversely, the Tempt Destiny experimental model placed causality first by distinguishing which mutually exclusive selection variable caused the effects observed. The 'unambiguous' empirical evidence has shown that the second cause logic used as the foundation of scientific methodology cannot 'correctly' distinguish which first cause variables caused the effects observed.

    Does Pan Sharpening adversely affect Landsat 8 reflective bands, and subsequent indices?

    How does pan sharpening Landsat 8 reflective bands affect the multi-spectral image composite or subsequent indices? Is there high or some ( tolerable) loss of spectral quality of the acquired image when pan sharpening? Which is the best pan sharpening algorithm for Urban land cover mapping using a medium resolution image, especially for Landsat 8? I use ENVI, ArcGIS and ERDAS for image analysis.

    Thank you for forwarding the articles. May i ask your suggesting if i should pan-sharpen a multi-spectral Landsat OLI bands with panchromatic ( band 8). I'll be using afterwards , Normalized Difference Built-up Index and SAVI ( Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) and MNDWI ( Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) for subsequent analysis and PCA ( Principal Component Analysis ) Images.
