    Does the concept of sustainable development really assure sustainability in terms of Environmental Economics, Ecological Economics & Green Economics?

    Can we really control anything? Do the homo-sapiens have really any control over the other homo-sapiens and/or those things they possess? Is not it largely contingent matter where the dependency of the dependents empowers those who are in control? If it is true that the power to control depends on the level of the dependency of those who are being controlled, then how can we theorize the assurances of sustainability where the term itself depends on the perfect functioning of the related things on which our control is factually contingent in nature? For example, let us assume that the whole world has set the nature free from human interruption, can we then claim it with a cent percent guarantee that we have achieved sustainable development? If the answer is yes, then how the homo-sapiens will be living their lives in the future? Is it possible to bring all the extinctions back from the lost? Is it really possible to compensate all the losses to the nature caused by us?

    Question: Are there any observations that do not fit into the model static space of Universe, are there any theoretical obstacles to the existence of such a model?

    I assume that the Universe is eternal, infinite and static, it is not expanded and not curved, it is possible to construct a preferred inertial frame of reference in which the CMBR is most isotropic. The matter in this space evolves, but the average density of matter and energy (in large enough volumes) fluctuate within a rather broad range.
    The light in this model is "tired", the speed of light depends on the optical density intergalactic medium. Gravity is also "tired" t.i. weakens a little faster R2. The energy of destroying matter goes into the surrounding vacuum. The excess energy from the vacuum give rise to new particles of matter.

    I state that all the observed cosmological effects can be explained in such a Static Model of the Universe.

    Dear colleagues, I do not ask, what are the problems faced by other theories (though I would be interested in your opinion on that. The General theory of relativity is not applicable to the entire space of the Universe).

    Dear Aloesi Dakuidreketi,

    I had formerly a good experience with PDA (potato dextrose agar),  PCA (potato carrot agar) or V8 medium. These culture media are very good to Alternaria species sporulation (dyctiospores production) in general at 20 - 25 oC, seven days.

    Best results were obtained when fungal colonies of  Alternaria solani were grown in V8 medium at 25 oC in the dark with agitation for seven days (see attachment).

    Is it not possible to electroplate Cu on Si?

    I need a Cu layer of approx. 25 micro meter on top of a Si substrate for Graphene growth. The substrate is also having a native layer of SiO2 on top of the Si.

    When trying to electroplate I fixed the Si substrate on a Copper foil and covered it with black tape leaving only a small area of (substrate) Si exposed, where I need the deposition to happen.

    My question is if I sputter a very thin layer of silver (Ag) on the Si substarate, would it affect the growth of Grpahene later on the Cu which will be deposited on Ag/SiO2/Si?

    Because Si is not conducting, it is pretty hard to deposit Cu on Si directly.

    By International broadcasters do you mean those that fall under the heading of "external broadcasters" -- and their reason for existing is in general to provide the perspective of the entity that is paying for them to operate. Thus, they are not as overly concerned with ratings as a commercial broadcaster might be in a particular market. It is true that they likely wish to be more effective in getting their messages out -- and so in this regard, they are going to look towards 'best practices' that exist within the various broadcast systems from which they come and to which they are transmitting. 

    So it is possible for you to look at books on this subject and then apply it to your specific scenario. It may depend on the exact messaging (e.g., is it part of a campaign?). Also, with digital and social media, the term 'international' is becoming a bit trickier. Anyway...

    "After washing with 10 ml of 80:20 (v:v) of CH2Cl2 and CH3OH, it says 5 ml of CH3OH acidified with 10mM formic acid"

    Does this mean 5 ml of CH3OH is acidified to 10mM concentration by formic acid?

    or 5 ml of CH3OH is  simply mixed with 10 mM formic aicd? (in which case it would be kind of tacit knowledge of individual researchers' knowledge?) 

    Please help me, and I have been stuck to here for almost a week.

    Dear Jae:

    Your question is interesting but I think that the protocols are a bit confused about what acidification means. pH scale has only sense in aqueous solutions, but in organic solvents, usually dissociation of compounds such as formic acid is really low.

    Hi Shonam,

    The calculation depends in large extent on what your objectives are. In analysis of long-term change in temperature, it is an usual practice to calculate anomalies of monthly temperature, or the difference of a monthly temperature from the 30-year average (e.g. 1961-1990 average), and then to get the annual mean temperature anomaly by simply averaging those of 12 months. A long-term temperature anomaly series for a specific station thus can be obtained. 

    There are publications on the calculation methods, or publications on long-term temperature change for any sites or regions, which you could find and read for details.

    To the best of my knowledge, Human Resources evaluation could be completed by numerical values as well as some more holistic approach. 

    If you have some organisation data then statistics could work well. Without any more information about the type of organisation data, it is hard to make more focused comments. 

    However, if you could define a fitness value (something that suggests it a good or bad performance in one number) and set some rules (constraints), it could be possible to use a branch-and-bound method to minimise or maximise the evaluation.  In reflection it is what you question is asking for. 

    Artificial Intelligence could be helpful with personal scheduling (i.e. timetabling) or with organising the employees in team, based on some optimising their qualities and how they can complement each others. 

    It is not much. But I hope it helps.

      ABSTRACT: Although microalgae show a great potential in the biotechnology sector, high production costs have limited industrial applications. Biomass harvest is one of the major bottlenecks in microalgae cultivation due to high energy inputs which are needed to separate the cells from the surrounding media. Chemical flocculation is considered to be a reliable resource to improve cost-effectiveness in the downstreaming processing. Flocculation efficiency is dependent on several factors such as the polymer type and charge as well as on the microalgae species. In the present study, 15 polyelectrolytes were tested for their potential to harvest algal biomass. Cationic, anionic and nonionic flocculants were tested in different amounts at varying incubation times to determine the adequate conditions needed. By testing the three chlorophytes, Chlorella sp., Scenedesmus acuminatus and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, the influence of different sizes, morphologies and motilities of the flocculation efficiency was verified. Furthermore, the biocompatibility of an efficient flocculant was tested in a recycling experiment over a period of 8 weeks.

    Dear Iftak,

    I have worked in the past with a POF whose clad and core where manufactured with different materials. This could be the case as Alan said. If so, core and clading can move independently and longitudinally if the fiber length is not too long (30 mm is maybe short enough) as overall friction finally stick the two parts together. You will need to "hang" the clading and push the core in order to make it going out from the clad. This is not an easy task, and if you hang too strongly, increased friction will avoid you to do so.. it's worth to try if you want to extract the core without damaging it. You could maybe extract shorter portions and then "splice" them in order to have your 30 mm length core.

    How to quantify protein concentration......?

    I have carried out some nanoparticle treatments on a set of cells, which I plan to use for western blot.

    Of 7 treatments, one set of cells has turned red, while another dark purple.

    I think this will be problematic for a BCA assay (and bradford), and can't run absorbance since it is a mixed cell lysate.

    I wondered if anyone has any other suggestions of how to quantify?

    To update this question - the colour remained in the cell debris pellet after cell lysis. It seems the nanoparticles changed colour directly, rather than the cells. Thank you all again for your valuable input!

    The holy grail of Physics is the Unification Theory called by Weinberg as the "Final Theory". When finally discovered, perhaps it can:

    1. Unify all fundamental forces in nature.

    2. Explain the Hierarchy Problem

    3. Explain all Cosmological Problems 

    5. Gives us the right Quantum Interpretation

    but can such theory derive all fundamental dimensionless constants in nature out of pure number and explain the true nature of time?

    I disagree. The axioms are the definition. No further definition is required, so long as we remain within mathematics. Indeed, it the essence of pure mathematics that this is so.

    In physical theories, the definitions  should also correspond to observation, but it is not necessarily the case that they are falsifiable. Either there is or there is not a maximum signal speed. Since observation would be different if there were not, it is proven that there is a maximum signal speed, refuting the doctrine of experimental falsifiability. Then physical definitions, such as the definition of the metre, are also not falsifiable.

    Can I correlate two time series in levels?

    Hi! This might seem like a dumb question, and it probably is. I´ve read a little time series econometrics and have come to learn that you can´t compare non-stationary series (unless there is cointegration). Then I came a across a paper where the authors correlated two series in level, and I became confused. The answer from the author was that "We can do this since we don´t try to establish Granger causality". Is this allowed?

    Dear Lars, 

    it is indeed an interesting research question these authors try to pursue! I take it, you were referring to Table 1 "pearson correlation" coefficients: it is good that the authors report significance, but the correlation of these variables is most likely spurious (providing we are talking about the variables displayed on Figure 1). I can not understand why the authors do not follow the standard procedures (like adjusting for level shift, structural breaks and outliers) and analyse the growth rates or at least changes, which are stationary.

    It is also unclear where are the interpolated observations - if there are any. In general, this paper has potential, but the econometric side there is somewhat far from perfect. 

    But from what I observe on Figure 1, it can be the case of fractional cointegration, at least for Germany, Japan, The Netherlands and New Zealand. There are few observations, but it may be the case.

    So if you have any datasets of this kind with roughly 100 observations I am open for cooperation.

    I've just started growing CTLL-2 IL2 dependent T cells in culture, and need quite high numbers. 

    The ATCC recommendations for culture are to subculture actively growing cells BEFORE they reach 2x10-5 cells/ml, but for my purposes this doesn't give me as many as I would like.

    I just wondered if anyone has experience maintaining these cells above this density, perhaps to 5x10-5/ml? 

    I have plated them epxerimentally at 1x10-6/ml for 24 hours with viable, happy cells.

    I'm wondering if there is any paper that looks at relation between having a bank account and financial stability. in other words, can I say having a bank account indicates greater financial stability, in developing country context where not many people have a bank account?     And also you can think of bank accounts as one particular risk-sharing mechanism, you might rephrase your inquiry as financial inclusion and risk-sharing.

    What are gravitinos?

    In supergravity theories combining general relativity and supersymmetry, the gravitino is the gauge fermion supersymmetric partner of the hypothesized graviton. It has been suggested as a candidate for dark matter.The gravitino is the fermion mediating supergravity interactions, just as the photon is mediating electromagnetism, and the graviton is presumably mediating gravitation. Whenever supersymmetry is broken in supergravity theories, it acquires a mass which is determined by the scale at which supersymmetry is broken.

    In supersymmetry, there is an equal number of bosonic and fermonic degrees of freedom. The gravitino is the fermonic partner of the graviton which is the carrier of gravity. i don't agree with previous post claiming there is no graviton.Like electromagnetism, gravity exhibits a macroscopic behavior. It is when one reaches a quantum level  that the photon  (particle) properties of light appear, so one could assume that at a very high energy regime a graviton may appear.
