eLife is a journal which say in their policy that they will not encourage impact factor.They now have nearly 10 IF.So do we need IFs to assess the quality of the journal.
Instead of relying on a single measure, a more objective approach would be to view ISI-SCI Impact Factor (Thompson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports), in addition to other measures - e.g. Scopus-based Impact Factor (SJR). These measures may somewhat differ. However, the increase in an impact factor of a journal could be due to a higher number of self-citations. I would suggest consulting the attached article. Although not specifically devoted to the impact factor it still addresses some of these issues. Hope this might be helpful.Following

I'm working on a T3/rT3 SPE extraction using an anion exchange SPE column. I have stumbled across DCM as a wash step in the literature, but if there is a non-halogenated alternative I'm not aware of, I could sure use the ideas. Thanks in advance!

Yeah building really provides a hell lot of services, LOL.
Definitely the energy and water services come first, but there are other services like communication (telephones, Internet etc.), ease of access (elevators), security services (alarm systems, fire detection and protection) and safety from natural calamities (lightning, heavy rains, earthquakes) too.
But with the advent of concepts like Internet of Things and Smart Home, the entire service domain of a building has been redefined. You can control the tint of your window glass right from your smartphone, you can check the CCTV footage of your bedroom while you are in college and many more.

- NewHas anyone seen no response of the cells after Oligomycin treatment in a Seahorse assay?
I am running a Seahorse assay (Glyclolysis test) on cKIT+ cells from murine bone marrow. I attached the cells to the plate with CellTak and they seem to be not detached along the run. They respond to the addition of glucose and 2-DG but I have not seen any response to the Oligomycin addition. I have tried concentration from 0.5uM till 1uM (maximum described in the literature for this kind of cells) and I have tested different stocks of Oligomycin.
Has anybody a possible explanation and solution? Should I go for higher concentrations?Following
- 6I annealed Ni superalloy onto Alumina holders for three days and found that Al2O3 turned green due to Chromium Oxide. Any idea of how to remove it?
The Ni superalloy, besides Ni contained mainly Cr, Co, Mo and Ti but after annealing the amount measured in the specimens is greatly decreased. The alumina sample holders and the inside of the chamber (also Al2O3) turned all green due to Cr2O3. Annealing happened at 1100°C in "supposed" vacuum, as it was reading 10^-6 Pa. I have tried already Nitric acid, water and mechanical abrasion (sand paper) but it does not help. Many Thanks
I have put the specimens in a atmosphere oven at 900° for 6 hrs and I observed no difference.
It looks like manual removal is the only way at the moment.

There is a facebook group with almost 1500 people on it who have delayed sleep phase syndrome, and I've been told that most of them have no idea where to go for effective treatment. I think many to most of these people have had sleep medicine doctors, but nothing they've suggested has helped. Does anyone know of some experts with effective clinical treatment in this area where these patients are not being referred? Thanks!
Dear Susan. As a Pediatrician i often have to adress delayed sleep phase (DSP) in some patients of mine, mainly adolescents; what is indeed a difficult task as in modern life many factors contribute to DSP. I noticed that if not all the family engages in an attempt to solve the prob, its solution is very difficult . When melatonin; changing lifestyle; and appropriate exposition to light fails...; and the family is not compliant i advise these patients to change their school hours to the afternoon period whenever this is possible. I do not believe that there are biological reasons for the DSP to occur, My assumption is that this important sleep prob origins only from an erroneous lifistyle of the patrient and his family. One point i advise a lot is that the DSP patient cannot have great disparities in the timing to sleep between school days ( or working days) and weekend days. I inform the adolescent that only one weekend a month is allowed for him/her to go out and so delaying the time to go to bed; and whenever this happens i advise the family to wake up the adolescent in the same hour that him/her have to wake to go to school every day. Having two social jat lags every week is one of most serious prob. that impairs DSP patients in having a good life quality and to solve his/her sleep "social" problem. It is always necessary to addres restless legs syndrome whenever it is the case, because this syndrome frequently ensues DSP as a commorbidity. Greetings from José Carlos Pereira Jr.Following

I assume, you are going to solve a creep problem. Equations in your attachment give the components of the tangent stiffness tensor. In addition, you need to update creep strains (components of creep strain tensor). To this end you may apply the forward Euler method as follows

We are performing quantitative yeast-two hybrid assays in the L40 strain with pDS-bait and pACT2-prey constructs. We are assessing dimerisation of one domain of a protein of interest, comparing the strength of a WT/WT v. WT/mutant(s) interaction. All the mutant constructs are in pDS while the WT, which remains constant throughout, is in both pDS and pACT2. We know from previously well-established data that the single amino acid substitutions should significantly decrease the strength of dimerisation. However, after several repeats, we continue to obtain inconsistent and highly variable results despite no obvious experimental errors. Technically, the assay works consistently ie upon all repeats yeast grows successfully and positive lacz assay results are observed. Moreover, all colonies picked for additional overnight growth develop to the correct optical density, with the quantitative CPRG assay consistently showing a measurable colour change. When analysing the results, however, we are unable to replicate previously published trends. There appears to be no significant difference between WT and mutant dimerisation, with most mutants even trending towards a potentially increased strength of interaction. We have sequenced and re-prepped all plasmid constructs, unfortunately to no avail. It would be immensely helpful to hear suggestions from experts re potential problems which we might have overlooked.

Have you considered using 3-AT (3-amino-1,2,4-triazol). It is a competitive inhibitor. Starting concentrations in the plates could be 5-15-30-60 mM.
Even though you might also experience low reproducibility (because you add one more parameter), observing a concentration effect could help you to extract a trend.

I am attempting to create a ultrasonic device which consist of a stepped horn connecting to a transducer and a blade using aluminium instead of the standard material (titanium). However, i am getting a stress of 790 Mpa and the tensile strength of aluminium 6061 is about 200-300 Mpa. Please let me know if anyone knows any ways of reducing stress in ultrasonic devices.
You could eliminate the prismatic input section and just put the stud directly in the tapered section (which would then become the input section).
Flexure resonances are very sensitive to thickness and length. If you can't change the blade's thickness then you can adjust the length (say by -5 mm to start) to see the effect. For each adjustment you should keep track of all flexure resonances within +/-5 kHz of the axial resonance since all of these flexure resonances will shift with the increased length. The idea is to make adjustments until two flexure resonances are equally spaced from the axial resonance. This will give the maximum frequency separation because any change in blade length will then push one or the other flexure resonances closer to the axial resonance. (In your case the flexure resonances will be primarily associated with the blade dimensions. None-the-less, these resonances will shift somewhat when the transducer is added. Therefore, very good frequency separation from the axial resonance is recommended.) At some point the blade might become too short for your application and you would need to stop. However, the flexure resonances could also be adjusted by lengthening the blade. Of course, after adjusting the blade length you would need to retune elsewhere.
Can you give more details of the food cutting application? I'm curious because your blade is quite thick compared to others that I have seen (although these were bar horns with the cutting edge on the face). What length of cut do you expect to need?

There are several ways graphene could be implemented in photovoltaics, due to its transparent and high conductivity properties. There are many reviews online that are a good starting point. Researchers are looking at using graphene to replace oxide conducting layers such as ITO, as well for use in dye-sensitized solar cells, and even designing solar cells based mainly on graphene. With all emerging photovoltaic technologies, the key will be in reducing the cost per Watt of electricity, not just increasing the efficiency. E.g. some third generation solar cell technologies only need to have efficiencies > 12 % to be competitive since they are a lot cheaper to make than traditional Si solar cells.
