The aim of this research was to study the effect of light on the seed germination and early growth of Maytenus robusta Reiss. (Celastraceae) and Hedyosmum brasiliense Mart. (Chloranthaceae), forest species of medicinal interest. The germination of the seeds was verified under light and dark and the growth of plants verified under three shading levels (30, 50 and 75%). The germination of seeds of M. robusta occurred both in light and dark and the growth of seedlings was better at higher light levels, suggesting behaviour of early successional species. Seeds of H. brasiliense were fotoblastic positive, behaviour usually found in pioneer species, but the growth of seedlings was inhibited at higher light levels, indicating that the seedlings have not a behaviour of early successional species.
