Organizations & employees in Greece are affected by the on-going financial crisis which has far-reaching negative impacts on many aspects of the economic life. This paper examines the impact of the financial crisis on employee performance in Greece. Data is collected from a heterogeneous sample of employees from public and private sector. Participants report their job satisfaction and organizational commitment, the change of their working conditions and the problems they have experienced during the last six years since the crisis has started. Results show that pay and extrinsic satisfaction, as well as, job security and affective commitment are the factors influencing employee perception about the deterioration of working conditions. Furthermore, the findings indicate that employees in the public sector feel less satisfied with their payment, but equally insecure with private sector’s employees. Permanent and open-ended contract staff, as well as, full time employees are more secure and satisfied with their payment and more affective committed than people with more flexible type of employment. The results of this study indicate that it is important for managers to develop management policies to improve employee satisfaction and commitment as these relate to performance increase.

Using as case study the Greek financial crisis and its effect on business life & organizational behaviour, the study identifies four work related attitudes - person-organisation fit, affective commitment, psychological climate and ethical leadership- examines their interaction with employee engagement, and, adopting a crisis management (CM) theoretical framework perspective, it also examines employee engagement and ethical leadership as useful and efficient mechanisms to cope with the crisis. Through a quantitative analysis of selected empirical data from a heterogeneous sample of Greek private sector employees, the study indicates that employee engagement has positive relations with person-organisation fit, affective commitment, psychological climate and ethical leadership under an economic crisis. The Greek economic crisis is part of the ongoing Eurozone crisis and was triggered by the global economic recession in October 2008. The Greek society as a whole is affected. This study examines, through critical literature review, the effect of crisis on a number of important work-related attitudes such as employee engagement, person-organisation fit, affective commitment, psychological climate and ethical leadership. Furthermore, using crisis management (CM) theory, we examine employee engagement and ethical leadership as useful and efficient tools to cope with the crisis. Moreover, this correlation study tests whether the affected from Greek economic crisis person-organisation fit, affective commitment, psychological climate and ethical leadership relate with employee engagement. To the best of the researchers’ knowledge, there is no other research to date which examines the aforementioned relationships during the Greek economic crisis. Based on relevant literature, we predict that employee engagement should have positive relations with person-organisation fit, affective commitment, psychological climate and ethical leadership under an economic crisis. Analysing empirical data from a heterogeneous sample of Greek private sector employees, we found evidence supporting our hypotheses. The paper concludes with a discussion of the findings and implications for further research.
