Microbial Desalination Cell Systems: A tool for environmental sustainability

Abstract

Microbial Desalination Cell (MDC), a variant of Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC), has a third chamber which contains the sea or brackish water to be desalinated. In recent years, various types of MDC systems have been design and introduced. All these systems do have exo-electrogens in their anodic chamber for the treatment of waste water, desalination process and production of electrical energy. Exo-electrogens are microorganisms, mostly bacteria, which generate electrical energy by the oxidation of organic matter. This study reviews the characteristics of exo-electrogens and also examines how they influence desalination, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal and power output in MDC systems
