An automated flow-based instrument for microwave-assisted treatment of liquid samples has been developed and characterized. Matrix modification and speciation control chemistries that are required for the radiochemical determination of total (99)Tc in caustic aged nuclear waste samples have been investigated. A rapid and quantitative oxidation procedure using peroxydisulfate in acidic solution was developed to convert reduced technetium species to pertechnetate in samples with high content of reducing organics. The effectiveness of the automated sample treatment procedures has been validated in the radiochemical analysis of total (99)Tc in caustic aged nuclear waste matrixes from the Hanford site.

The Sorption of Uranium and Technetium on Bentonite, Tuff and Granodiorite

A combined experimental and modelling study of the sorption of uranium and technetium on geological materials has been carried out as part of the PNC programme to increase confidence in the performance assessment for a high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repository in Japan. [Show full abstract] and granodiorite from both equilibrated seawater and de-ionised water under strongly-reducing and non-reducing conditions. A preliminary study of the sorption of uranium on mineral surfaces in granodiorite has also been undertaken using a nuclear microprobe. Mathematical modelling using the geochemical speciation program HARPHRQ in conjunction with the HATCHES database has been carried out in order to interpret the results of the sorption experiments.

An approach to the assessment of transuranic speciation in the geosphere

[Show full abstract] of their stability under realistic environmental conditions.In view of existing time constraints and the limitations of present analytical techniques for in situ measurements, the assessment of the potential mobility of physico-chemical species of radionuclides in a number of different geological options may depend on the development of an indirect approach. This will involve two aspects. Firstly, the identification of a number of characteristic classes of physico-chemical species which may be expected to occur in both liquid and solid phases of different geological media. Secondly, the identification of the geochemical parameters that will require in situ measurement to delimit the probable chemical forms at a given site of interest. A working methodology employed by the J.R.C., Ispra Establishment is described. Two examples are given concerning americium and technetium.

Current Status of the Thermodynamic Data for Technetium and Its Compounds and Aqueous Species

â¹â¹Tc is a major fission product from nuclear reactors. Because â¹â¹Tc has few applications outside of scientific research, most of this technetium will ultimately be disposed of as nuclear waste. The radioactive decay of â¹â¹Tc to â¹â¹Ru produces a low energy Î²â» particle, but because of its fairly long half-life of tââ = 2.13 x 10âµ years, â¹â¹Tc is a major source of radiation in ... Technetium forms the soluble TcOââ» anion under oxic conditions and this ion is very mobile in groundwater, but technetium is reduced to less soluble Tc(IV) hydrolyzed species under anoxic conditions. Geochemical modeling of the dissolution of nuclear waste, and of the solubility and speciation of the dissolved radionuclides in groundwaters, is an integral part of the Performance Assessment of the safety of a nuclear waste repository, and this modeling requires a critically-assessed thermodynamic database. Such a database for technetium was published in the book Chemical Thermodynamics of Technetium, with literature coverage through 1998. This database is described herein, along with more recent relevant studies. Gaps in the knowledge of the chemical and thermodynamic properties of technetium are pointed out, and recommendations are made for measurements that are needed to eliminate these gaps.
