The prototype software environment developed in the EU ESPRIT project 6609 COMBI demonstrates in practice the benefits of open system integration for the structural engineering domain. The environment is based on an object-oriented product modelling framework conforming to the ISO STEP methodology. This paper discusses the main concepts realised in...

... obtained results have verified the potential power of the suggested approach. To give an impression of the system, on figure 5 below is presented a snapshot of the developed prototype integration platform PROMINENT, showing a run-time reflection of the example sketched on figure 4. It illustrates the WWW-based communication with the foundation designer, the GDI implemented as support environment for CSML (exposed on the main desktop ofthe integration platform), and the on-line interaction with a general-purpose CAD (presenting, in particular, the overlapping of the structural and the foundation model for visual evaluation of the solution -not possible in this form in any of the two involved design tools). The figure gives an impression of the practical benefits of the system for the end- users: co-ordinated and co-operative work using different tools, at remote places, integrated by a common modelling framework and enabling Internet technology. ...

: A lack of interoperability represents a significant problem (not only in Brazil) in many productive sectors and is still not explored in building design. In order to investigate the problems relating to information exchange, principally data interoperability, a survey was conducted in design offices in the south of Brazil, to identify the problem...

The C2RM provides a framework for the evolution of a coordinated and detailed definition of a command and control (C2) discipline. The C2RM embodies an integrated multidisciplinary approach. It is intended to be complete and self-consistent for the main levels of abstractions encountered in models, simulations, operational applications, functional...

An AI-based hierarchical framework for concurrent engineering is suggested. It is based on the research carried out on product modelling, interoperability by mapping and matching, activity control, workflow management and information logistics in virtual enterprises and the research done in AI application to conceptual structural design and product information systems for the electronic market. This research has resulted in several prototypes in the past four years. By extrapolating the results achieved in the single prototype areas, this framework is expected to reduce the lead time of briefing, design and constructs to the range of 50 %. The paper is focused on the cognitive architecture in which the AI methods are embedded and the information logistics part with the newly suggested electronic board. The framework has to support object-oriented as well as object-centred, document-centred, process-centred and production-centred working environments with different working cultures. This needs multiple presentation of data, data transformation, data condensation and dedicated Al methods.
