Matisia Bonpl. is a genus of Malvaceae (Matisieae) that is distributed from Nicaragua to Brazil. Twelve species of Matisia have been recorded in Panama. In this article, we add two species to the Panamanian flora, Matisia gentryi Fern.Alonso and M. tinamastiana A.Estrada & Cascante, and provide for both species full descriptions , images, a distribution map, taxonomic notes, and conservation status. Additionally, we provide an identification key for Matisia in Panama and propose the synonymization of Matisia sect. Tuberculatae Fern.Alonso under Matisia sect. Matisia. Santa Rita is a town located in the province of Colón, Panama. This area is threatened by various human activities that not only threaten the landscape and its vegetation, but also the integrity of the pollinators that live there. Considering this, we collected samples of bees from the Euglossini tribe in a fragmented area of Santa Rita, to get an idea of the population status in which these bees could be found at the site. Sampling was carried out one day during the dry season and one day in the rainy season of 2017. We collected 179 males belonging to 20 species, belonging to the three genera Euglossa (14 spp.), Eufriesea (4 spp.), and Eulaema (3 spp.). We know that these results are not enough to determine if Euglossini bee populations are stable or have decreased, but they give us a basis on the abundance and richness of the recorded species.

In Panama, the Orchidaceae comprise 187 genera, of which one of the most conspicuous is Sobralia. The flowers of Sobralia are mostly ephemeral but colorful, often fragrant, and of variable sizes. Despite being a prominent group, its taxonomy is still underdeveloped in most neotropical countries. To continue with taxonomic studies in the Orchidaceae of Panama, we investigated a species of Sobralia, which differs from any recorded species of the genus. We documented the species with digital images and compared it with morphologically similar taxa. This paper describes and illustrates a new Sobralia from the Bosque Protector Palo Seco in the Fortuna area, Panama. Sobralia rinconiana differs from all other species recorded in Panama by the combination of a large plant size that reaches up to 120 cm high and the larger and broader, elliptical-lanceolate leaves (30–35 × 14–16 cm). Sobralia rinconiana is most similar to S. carazoi but differs in the spreading flowers with reflexed petals and the infundibuliform, cream-yellow lip, the wider, longer sepals and petals, and the longer, suberect column. The accurate estimate of the number of Sobralia species in Panama is still uncertain. Its diversity may increase as new areas are explored or species complexes are resolved.

El almendro (Terminalia catappa L.) en Panamá es de uso maderable, nutricional, medicinal, entre otros. Se sabe poco sobre los compuestos secundarios presentes en las diferentes partes de esta especie vegetal. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo realizar la caracterización fitoquímica de la hoja verde (HN), fruto verde (FV) y maduro (FM) del almendro. El muestreo se llevó a cabo entre los meses de mayo a junio del 2017. Se colocaron las HN, FV y FM del almendro por separado en tratamiento de extracción directa con etanol al 95% durante un día. El extracto etanólico fue obtenido por filtrado de gravedad y concentrado en un rotavapor al vacío (BUCHI Rotavapor™ R-210). Se realizó un tamizaje fitoquímico para determinar los tres principales grupos de compuestos secundarios (compuestos fenólicos, compuestos nitrogenados y terpenos). También se realizó un análisis de Espectroscopía Infrarroja (FTIR) y Espectroscopía Ultravioleta-Visible (UV) para saber cuáles eran los grupos funcionales presentes. Se utilizó Past 4.02 para generar una gráfica de abundancia relativa de los compuestos secundarios presentes, y se aplicó el índice de Whittaker para evaluar el porcentaje de diferencia en la composición fitoquímica de las diferentes partes vegetales. Con estos datos se logró identificar que la caracterización fitoquímica semicuantitativa es variable para cada parte, presentando mayor abundancia de compuestos nitrogenados (alcaloides) y compuestos fenólicos (taninos, flavonoides). No se observó presencia de glicósidos cardiotónicos, ni de gomas y mucilagos. Esta información resalta que T. catappa L. es un potencial recurso para la salud, siendo de gran valor etnobotánico, farmacológico y para la industria alimenticia en Panamá.

Species of the genus Russula are key components of ectomycorrhizal ecosystems worldwide. Nevertheless, their diversity in the tropics is still poorly known. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the diversity of Russula species classified in subsection Roseinae based on specimens recently collected in tropical montane rainforests in western Panama. A five gene multilocus phylogeny based on the nuclear markers ITS nrDNA, MCM7, RPB1, RPB2 and TEF-1α was constructed to identify the systematic position of 22 collections from Panama. Four new species, Russula cornicolor, Russula cynorhodon, Russula oreomunneae and Russula zephyrovelutipes are formally described and illustrated. None of the four species are sister species and they are more closely related to North American or Asian species. Two of the newly described species were associated with the ectomycorrhizal tree species Oreomunnea mexicana, while the other two species were associated with Quercus species. All four species are so far only known from mountains in western Panama.

Dieffenbachia (Araceae) currently comprises 57 species described from Mexico, through Central America, the West Indies, Trinidad to South America. Our comprehensive revision of herbarium specimens and recent explorations in remote areas of Panama, identified two new endemic species of Dieffenbachia: D. batistae O. Ortiz & Croat and D. mortoniana O. Ortiz & Croat. Descriptions, taxonomic comments, conservation notes and photographs of the new species are provided.

Background and Aims: Gustavia sessilis is a neotropical tree, belonging to the Lecythidaceae family, until now known from the Colombian Chocó region only. In this paper, we report G. sessilis for the first time for Central America. Methods: Central American specimens of G. sessilis were collected in 2019 from the Darién Province (eastern Panama). Plant identifications were confirmed by comparing collected specimens with those identified earlier and housed in the MO, PMA, SCZ and UCH herbaria. Type specimens were examined by consulting the JSTOR Global Plants database. The estimations of the conservation status were made based on the criteria of the IUCN. Key results: The record of G. sessilis for Central America is presented, based on a collection made from eastern Panama (Darién Province). Photographs, taxonomic comments, and conservation notes are provided. Additionally, a key for the Central American Gustavia species is included. Conclusions: The distribution of G. sessilis now ranges from Bahía Piñas, Darién Province, Panama to the Condoto river, Chocó region, Colombia, highlighting the importance of the Chocó Panama-Colombia region for the conservation of biodiversity, since it could act as a natural corridor for species. Taking into account the small number of records and the restricted natural range of this species, we recommend considering G. sessilis as an endangered species.

Ninety-four species belonging to 12 genera of Araceae are recorded on Cerro Pirre (Darién Province): Adelonema Schott (two); Anthurium Schott (39), Chlorospatha Engl. (2), Dieffenbachia Schott (3); Heteropsis Kunth (1); Monstera Adans. (6); Philodendron Schott (28), Rhodospatha Poepp. (2); Spathiphyllum Schott (2); Stenospermation Schott (3); Syngonium Schott (4) and Xanthosoma Schott (2). Taxonomic notes, identification key and comments on habitat and ecology of the species are presented.

Three species are recorded from Panama for the first time: Lagocheirus cristulatus Bates, 1872; Leptostylus guianensis Vlasak & Santos-Silva, 2021; and Nealcidion cephaliferum Vlasak & Santos-Silva, 2022. Lepturges (Lepturges) brechlini Santos-Silva et al., 2019 is synonymized with L. (L.) vigneaulti Audureau, 2018. Three new species are described from Panama: Pseudosparna rileyi sp. nov. (Acanthocinini); Sternacutus cupelloi sp. nov. (Acanthocinini); and Antodice raberi sp. nov. (Aerenicini). An updated key to species of Pseudosparna Mermudes & Monné, 2009 is provided.
