Zakynthos is a rapidly urbanized and touristic developing island situated in the Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean) where statistically significant negative precipitation trends prevail at least during the last four decades. During the last century precipitation has been decreased by 22%. Groundwater is the main water reservoir for domestic, agricu...

... increase of agricultural wa- ter demands, the urbanization and tourist development has caused degradation of groundwater quality ( Voudouris et al. 2006). Zakynthos (Zante) Island is located in the Ionian Sea, at the western part of the main orographic barriers of Greek pen- insula, covering an area of 406 km 2 (Fig.1). The population is highly variable along the year, while positive trends are recorded since 1980 (eg. in the period 1991-2001 the rate of increment was equal to 19%). ...

As a result, 90% of the rainy season precipitation in Greece is ought to Mediterranean cyclones activity (Maheras and Anagnostopoulou, 2003). ...

Given the current horizontal resolution of RCMs, numerical results correspond to the single land grid cell covering the island (Fig.1). Furthermore, weighting factors were applied to these models according to the guidelines for the weighting produced within the ENSEMBLES project (see also Founda and Giannakopoulos, 2009). ...

Uncertainties of regional precipitation projections are substantial, and users of such projections face the so‐called practitioners dilemma: a plethora of projections with different models from different ensembles of different types and generations are available. But the consistency of these projections has not been systematically assessed, such th...

... Into the geological formations in Zakynthos, three major aquifers are developed. a) In the east, the restricted aquifer in Neogene deposits of Kypseli Unit, b) the unique karstic source of carbonate formations located west in Keri Lake and c) in the central-east the unconfined alluvial aquifer (Megalovasilis, Kalimeris, Founda & Giannakopoulos, 2011;Megalovasilis, 2014). ...

More detailed studies of rainfall in Zakynthos (Megalovasilis, Kalimeris, Founda & Giannakopoulos, 2011) have come to realize a significant loss of about 22% of available water in 4 decades. ...

Nowadays, energy demand is considered a notable world problem. The purpose of this study is to define, document and finally select an option of only one renewable energy source system, as to which is considered the most suitable solution from an environmental, social and economic point of view, for the energy independence of Zakynthos Island in Greece. This study examines the following alternatives; Biofuels Production Station, Geothermal Power Station, Hydroelectric Power Station, Solar Power Station and Wind Power Station. In order to determine the optimal renewable energy source, a multi-criteria decision-making approach is followed. The three pillars of sustainability, namely, the environment, the economy and the society, were used as the primary criteria in the context of the under determination goal. A significant number of environmental, economic and social sub-criteria were also developed and were subject to weight evaluation using both pairwise comparison and evaluation through structured interviews. Results, with regard to the delimitations set for the scope of the current study, indicate that solar energy source system is the optimal sustainable alternative.
... Performing an analysis of these factors, a contextual basis can be formed in order to achieve a rational sustainable water management in practice. Water demands in Zakynthos did increased over the past decades and intense urbanisation and touristic development have decreased both quantity and quality of groundwater (Megalovasilis et al., 2011a;Voudouris et al., 2006). Groundwater is the main water reservoir in the island and there is a lack of significant surface runoff water (rivers, lakes etc). ...
... The examination of climatic data available for the periods 1893-1930 and 1955-2008, showed that precipitation deficit in Zakynthos strongly affects the entire rainy season (October to March). By comparing the periods 1893-1930and 1972(Megalovasilis et al., 2011a, it has been observed that the precipitation deficit is partitioned among autumn (by 24%) and winter (by 65%) months. Moreover, light and moderate rain (H < 15 mm/day) tend to increase after 1972 while medium and heavy rain events (15 < H < 50) tend to decrease ( Figure 2). ...
... In conclusion, a dramatic decrease by almost 25% was simulated for the period by the end of the current century (2071-2100) with the ensemble-3 simulation, indicating the risk of a pronounced future high water deficit in Zakynthos, as well as, in the whole south Ionian region (Megalovasilis et al., 2011a). Results of combined data are present in Figure 4. ...

The use of groundwater resources in Zakynthos Island in the Ionian Sea at central Mediterranean has become extremely intensive during the last decades, due to the high rate of urbanisation, tourist development and irrigated land expansion and is estimated being 15 hm3/year. Different methods are being required when water-related sustainability issues are examined like development analysis, quality control processes, application of legal framework and climatic forecasts. In order to aim the water management and improving the sustainability of the groundwater resources of Zakynthos Island, a new water balance has been estimated for each individual watershed after detail hydrological analysis and significant differences were observed from previous estimations being runoff +16.8%, evaporation –13.8 and infiltration –3.1% respectively. A better understanding of the total potential risks regarding future groundwater resources is the critical point for the local authorities to apply a regulatory sustainable plan and the local population to aim for its success.
