Cette étude avait pour objectif d’explorer les raisons motivant le choix des femmes enceintes primipares de connaître ou non le sexe fœtal et de comparer leurs représentations de l’enfant porté. Au total, 31 femmes, dont 14 ignorent le sexe fœtal, ont été incluses dans l’étude entre leur 26e et 33e semaine de grossesse. Elles ont été interviewées à l’aide de l’IRMAG (Ammaniti et al., 1999) après avoir rempli un questionnaire en ligne. La décision de ne pas connaître le sexe fœtal peut être l’expression du désir de garder une part de mystère ou d’une préoccupation non centrée sur le sexe de l’enfant. Presque la moitié des sujets rapportent une difficulté à imaginer le caractère et l’aspect physique de leur enfant. Les femmes ignorant le sexe fœtal font plus de rêves étranges de leur enfant et sont plus attentives à la qualité de ses mouvements. Enfin, la connaissance du sexe fœtal ne semble pas forcément induire de représentations genrées stéréotypées.
