Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of the host, the Physical Activity and Sports Tech for Healthy Lifestyles, the i4EUFITMOS and USSI project team from Faculty for Sport and Physical Education at University of Montenegro and the Conference Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 4-day interdisciplinary PASTECHL scientific conference to be held in Podgorica, Montenegro, 16th – 19th October 2025. It is planned to be hosted by the Physical Activity and Sports Tech for Healthy Lifestyles, in cooperation with the i4EUFITMOS and USSI project team from Faculty for Sport and Physical Education, University of Montenegro and Western Balkan Sport Innovation Lab, as well as the patronage of the partners who share our vision.
We do believe that we will create an exciting program with “Shaping the Future of Sports & Health Monitoring Systems” as main theme. The program will consist of keynote speeches, workshops, parallel oral and poster sessions, but we will make sure there will be enough time to catch-up with familiar and unfamiliar colleagues, explore some collaboration options and create new academic networks, which is the main purpose of this kind of the industry oriented and scientific events.
We will make sure the topics will offer the target audience a forum for the latest research and both theoretical and applied insight into the field of sports, exercise and health, so this newly developed scientific conference, which had to be held in hybrid format, might bring together national and international physicians, scientists, therapists, trainers and many other interested parties from the fields of sports, exercise and health.
We hope to see you in Podgorica, October 16-19!

Summary:
Any early stage before adulthood is key for the acquisition of behaviours that are likely to endure into adulthood. It is therefore not surprising that engagement in healthy eating, an active lifestyle, and spending fewer hours in front of the screen are some of the most important habits to be acquired by children for them to develop into healthy adults. Healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle have been demonstrated to have a positive influence on preventing chronic diseases and improving mental health in children and adolescents. On the other hand, the academic world has been scandalized due to the general decline in PISA scores. Academics claim that the increase in hours spent in front of screens and the use of social networks has negatively affected the physical, mental, and cognitive health of children and adolescents. Social networks offer images and messages that promote the thinness ideal in women and the muscularity ideal in men, which has caused this population to worry about their bodies conforming to these idealized and unrealistic physical standards. Consequently, this has led to the inspiration to physical activity engagement and follow diets with a motivation oriented to appearance (rather than health), triggering emotional problems (i.e., body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and high body shame), cognitive problems (i.e., high body vigilance) and behavioural problems (i.e., unhealthy eating behaviours or eating disorders).
Thus, the goal of this Special Issue in the International Journal of Mental Health Promotion is to increase scientific evidence in the study of healthy lifestyle behaviours and mental health in children and adolescents. We welcome reviews and original research which consider novel approaches and identify gaps in knowledge. We also encourage submissions that explore how following healthy habits can impact physical and mental health during these stages.

Introduction
Childhood and adolescence are crucial periods for developing lifestyle behaviors that can persist into adulthood, influencing both physical and mental health outcomes. Healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as nutritious eating habits, regular physical activity, and limited screen time, have been shown to contribute positively to mental health (Li et al., 2022). However, the rise of screen-based activities and the pervasive influence of social media have introduced new challenges, leading to increased body dissatisfaction and unhealthy behaviors. This paper explores the connection between healthy lifestyle behaviors and mental health in children and adolescents, focusing on the interplay between physical activity, diet, screen time, and mental well-being.
Healthy Eating and Mental Health
Healthy eating plays a pivotal role in physical and mental well-being, particularly during childhood and adolescence. A balanced diet rich in nutrients is associated with improved cognitive function, mood regulation, and lower rates of depression and anxiety (Jacka et al., 2019). The Mediterranean diet, for instance, has been linked to lower depression levels in adolescents (Bravo-Soto et al., 2021). A nutrient-dense diet not only provides the energy necessary for growth but also supports brain development and emotional stability.
Conversely, poor eating habits, such as high consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks, have been associated with an increased risk of mental health problems. Children and adolescents consuming diets high in processed foods are more likely to experience mood disorders and reduced cognitive functioning (O'Neil et al., 2014). Therefore, promoting healthy eating habits is essential for the prevention of mental health issues in young populations.
Physical Activity and Mental Health
Physical activity is another significant determinant of mental health in children and adolescents. Numerous studies have highlighted the positive relationship between physical activity and mental well-being. Regular participation in physical exercise has been linked to lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, while enhancing self-esteem and cognitive functioning (Biddle & Asare, 2011). Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which help reduce symptoms of mental distress (Lubans et al., 2016).
Additionally, physical activity fosters social interaction, which is beneficial for mental health. Team sports and group activities provide opportunities for social bonding, enhancing self-confidence and promoting a sense of belonging. However, recent trends show a decline in physical activity levels among youth, which can be partially attributed to increased screen time (Guthold et al., 2020). Therefore, interventions encouraging regular physical activity are critical in supporting mental health in children and adolescents.
Screen Time and Mental Health
While technology plays an integral role in education and communication, excessive screen time is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for mental health issues in children and adolescents. Prolonged screen use, especially time spent on social media, is associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and body dissatisfaction (Twenge & Farley, 2021). Social media platforms often promote unrealistic body ideals, leading adolescents to compare themselves to these images and experience body dissatisfaction, which can result in lower self-esteem and unhealthy behaviors such as disordered eating (Beyens et al., 2020).
Moreover, excessive screen time is linked to disrupted sleep patterns, which can exacerbate mental health issues. Insufficient sleep has been shown to contribute to emotional dysregulation, irritability, and impaired cognitive functioning (LeBourgeois et al., 2017). Therefore, reducing screen time and promoting healthier media use can be key components of mental health interventions for children and adolescents.
Body Image and Mental Health
The impact of social media on body image is a growing concern. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to idealized images of thinness and muscularity, leading to negative body image and mental health outcomes such as body shame, eating disorders, and depression (Grabe et al., 2008). These issues are exacerbated by peer pressure and social comparison, which are amplified on social media platforms.
To mitigate these risks, educators and healthcare providers must emphasize the importance of promoting a positive body image and self-acceptance. Interventions that address body image concerns should be incorporated into mental health promotion efforts, focusing on media literacy and the cultivation of self-compassion and realistic body standards (Tiggemann & Slater, 2017).
Conclusion
The relationship between healthy lifestyle behaviors and mental health in children and adolescents is well-established. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and reduced screen time are essential components for supporting positive mental health outcomes. However, the increasing influence of social media and sedentary behaviors presents new challenges, particularly regarding body image and self-esteem. Future interventions should focus on promoting holistic health, incorporating both physical and mental well-being strategies to support the long-term development of healthy and resilient youth.

Whatever your goals are (in this case, creating healthy habits), building a routine that allows you space and time to reflect on your priorities is vital. Whatever you focus on at that moment (your job, study, exercises, etc.), take breaks to reset and evaluate how it is going.
You can set many healthy goals for yourself (e.g., drink 2lt of water per day; go for a 30-minute walk every day, stretch after a long sitting session, enjoy positive social relationships, be grateful, do at least one thing for someone else during the week, reduce processed food, and others). But remember, all of them will stick only if you have a sustainable system, which you personalise, care and adjust.
I would suggest beginning with small steps and gradually building upon them.

I have suffered of Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) for more than 20 years, and it has caused many other diseases. Fortunately, I am a surgeon, a sportman, an optimist and a practitioner of positive psychology. After seeking hopeless medical help, I, instead of complaining, think when the Heaven is about to grant a man great responsibility, he would first put his flesh and bone to test. I overcame all the difficulties and fought against the disease. As I work, I took advantage of scientific knowledge for self-treatment and rehabilitation. I already had a solid foundation in cycling, running and swimming. With the help of many people, I signed up for the triathlon competition.
I have taken foreign visiting students of taizhou hospital to enjoy swiming here, for fun and also cultural exchanges. In spite of language barriers and different national conditions, we all love sports, understand sports language, and pursue the goal of health, stability, peace and friendship.
How can we improve our immunity and increase our ability to resist diseases under in the pandemic era? In my opinion, first of all, we should learn positive psychology, maintain a healthy lifestyle, cultivate an optimistic and positive spirit, and live a simple life. We may take reasonable meals, enjoy fresh food, regular living and adequate sleep, and breathe the fresh air of nature. At the same time, proper outdoor sports are needed, such as biking, running and climbing. If conditions allow, we may learn to swim, especially all-season outdoor swimming, making it as important as dining and sleeping.

Medical science, dear Huabin Chen , is definitely an ancient scientific discipline, but there is a lot of room form improvement, e.g. in terms of psychological medicine, psychosomatics and prevention strategies. It makes great sense to connect our own experiences (pain, suffering, well-being) with the available techniques of medical healing; the disease-centered approach alone cannot help to achieve a higher level of medical intervention for maintaining our health.

I would imagine that your education program for young adults will cover key points such as awareness of the role of physical activity, diet and nutrition in obesity prevention/treatment, and the health implications of obesity such as cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea and diabetes risks.
Further, since you have a young target audience, I would expect coverage of the intermediate process variables such as endurance for sports, recreation, work and study.
Therefore, I would document your key educational objectives and incorporate these into the pre/post-test, taking care to include plausible but incorrect answer items as part of the set.
