he work of the United Nations and its affiliated organizations in Syria is concentrated in the fields of education and training (workshops, training courses, dialogue sessions and discussions, lectures), and support for economic projects, which include disbursing millions of dollars in the field of training, workshops, seminars, and seminars. But have the United Nations and its affiliated organizations studied the economic feasibility and the real sustainable benefit of disbursing these huge sums? I am not saying that spending these sums is completely useless, but are their benefits equal to the desired and planned benefits, especially in the catastrophic situation in Syria. How is the overall benefit of a workshop, training course, seminar or panel discussion for a group of young people if they are 10, 20 or even 100 people. In addition to the huge amounts spent on economic feasibility studies for projects such as economic, technical, marketing and training studies....etc.
Although the primary goal of all United Nations programs and affiliated organizations are lofty goals, which are to achieve social and economic development that achieves stability and sustainable prosperity. However, I see that the mechanism of disbursing these funds is not commensurate with the returns and benefits that are achieved on the ground of the Syrian reality in the medium and long term.
I think that the best solution is to focus the United Nations and its affiliated organizations on small investment projects that are characterized by direct support and in very small amounts that can achieve very large benefits in a practical, wide-reaching and sustainable way.

The UN and its allies are benefitting from the conflict that is prevailing in the middle east and other parts of the world such as Africa.Members of the united nations benefit from the sales of weapons to these wartorn regions and the only thing that will effect the abolishing of wars all over the world is if the American and British governments stop selling weapons to countries such as Israel and other authoritarian regimes. The Un is very hypocritical in all their claims.

I am a Phd student and am planning an intervention/workshop in management field. Due to the limited time and the complexity of the intervention, I would like to do pre and post-intervention interviews to measure the change of the participants. I am wondering about the feasibility of this and if it is necessary to keep the interview questions exactly the same pre/post intervention?
Relevant answer
Answer
In my opinion, qualitative research is strongest when it comes to understanding how and why things happen the way they do. Simply repeating what you asked at a prior time won't get at the processes that did or did not occur during an intervention. If you want to know "much things changed," then you should use the kind of quantitative tools that are best suited to producing that kind of knowledge.

Mustafa,
I’m sending many links (see below) for on-line classes and training.
Most are free and nearly all require you to create a new user account and then register. However, you’ll have to check each one to see if it offers details for "perfecting PCR reactions".
Also, many schools and universities here and in Europe are planning to continue on-line study along with in class studies. This would let you enroll for a single class at many places worldwide. However, I'm my opinion, the value of watching vs hands-on-work laboratory work is dependent of the knowledge and skills of the instructors and I would ask for recommendations.

Large amounts of research focus on the balance between Exploration and Exploitation. However, this omits the power of Selection which can turn any metaheuristic into a hill climber by rejecting all exploratory search solutions.
To engage the broader research community in this important discussion, we are organizing a Workshop on Selection to be held at CEC2021 in Krakow, Poland. Please consider participating in our event or on our project page.
Relevant answer
Answer
I think you need to be leery against the use of "selection" in metaheuristics as an independent attribute from exploitation. If anything, the two really augment one another. History has shown that metahueristics which have a selection property to it invariably have weak explorative capabilities. Prime well-known examples are Artificial Bee Colony algorithm and GAs.
My guess is that the same metrics that we currently use for estimating algorithmic performance (optimized solution, standard deviation, number of functional analysis, diversity index, etc.) can be modified to examine the so-called "selection - exploration" balance for algorithms, since as I said earlier, selection and exploitation are really just two faces of the same coin.

Dear Colleagues,
Any advice on a methodological framework I can use to review factors or variables that are associated with physical activity (outcome of interest)? I'm not necessarily interested in a meta-analysis on the strength of these associations, but rather interested in identifying the holistic "system" that has been associated with physical activity across various contexts. Almost like "systems thinking or concept mapping", but then based on literature rather than "interviews / workshops".

I have just completed my PhD thesis - Adapting Photovoice to Visualise and Influence Environmental Behaviour across Australia, Bangladesh, and China (Monash University - Design), exploring using photovoice methods across multiple geographic sites to facilitate dialog between and amongst these communities using various participatory techniques, specifically with innovation in audience engagement.
The journey has taken me across 17 discrete participatory-action-research cycles
spanning 4 years, where I partnered with 19 local organisations to run 80 workshops, 8 community exhibitions, and 3 community interview events across 4 separate sites spanning Australia, Bangladesh, and China. Over 700 participants attended workshops and collectively created over 500 photo-stories. I focussed on environmental behaviour, but these methods - like photovoice generally - are applicable to a wide range of themes.
Now I have finally emerged from the tunnel of my PhD, I am looking for future opportunities to use these learnings in other projects and connect with like-minded peers.
Thus I am interested to see who else / what other current and future projects are working on similar methodological adaptations in photovoice or related visual methods?
I have attached the full thesis text here if it is useful to others. I am also happy to receive feedback.
thanks and all the best,

The covid-19 lockdown(s) are an obstacle social and political science need to overcome (others as well, of course). Especially participation-based research (such as observations or workshops) is hard to compensate. At the moment I'm working on the research design for my PhD-project- this will include an online survey, as any contact-based research design is hard to realize right now.
This is the core of my question:
  1. Do you have experiences when it comes to spreading online surveys on a national scale? Which methods help in gaining a satisfying number of responses?
  2. Does anyone know any good tools to compensate for workshops that had to be cancelled due to covid-restrictions? We are looking for a tool that gives a 'conference-like' surrounding so people can interact with one another from the comfort and safety of their home (zoom and such are great for meetings but we feel like losing insights by their static interface).
I'm thankful for everyone's help. Stay safe!
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Lucas,
I have some experience with large scale survey's.The best results came from designing a full 'marketing' strategy, including multiple 'messages' designed to attract a target population covering those indifferent to as well as for and against the topic. We also used personal delivery as much as we could. I recommend you search out and read the most recent publications (of any repute) on how to do market research in the social media era.
I have also had experience with research involving distance students - everything went via email, text and various online conference/ classroom calls. In those day, the main interactive tools were skype and adobe classroom. As you surmise, we had to limit numbers for group discussions so that all participants had the opportunity to provide input. My current experience with newer tools hasn't been much better (screen sharing has improved). Many people don't know how to use these tools adequately, even now.
The best advice I can give is plan your survey/workshop strategy carefully. Don't expect too much in terms of response and or participation. Take into account during planning that you will experience response bias.Every participatory encounter will experience technical difficulties so allow extra time for everything!
Good luck, Lorinne

Do you have any experience in this?
Thank you for your help!
Best,

Relevant answer
I am an investigation methodology teacher and yes there are established methods for devoloping workshops and for the evaluation procedure. To develop a workshop, the methodology is as follows: Fist of all you must define the objective, after that, take into account what are the activities that all persons involved in the workshop are going to develop and for the workshop evaluation, we apply the observation methodology of all the activities developed by the participants, following an observation guide.
In my personal oppinion, once the activities you devoloped are finished, you can apply a survey or interviews, to be able to prove the effect or result obtanied according to the planned objective.

One Week Workshop on Advanced Research Analysis Tools and Techniques Being Organised by Department of Commerce (SAP, DRS-III), University of Jammu, Jammu (J&K)
Research provides new domain of knowledge, new theories and laws, solution to a problem and open new areas of thought. Further, it has the potential to question and analyse the existing theories in accordance to the present circumstances. Research involves answering unanswered questions or exploring something which currently does not exist (Goddard & Melville, 2004). Hence, it is important for educational/ professional academicians and scholars to be acquainted higher order research techniques. In the recent past, many new dimensions of research have emerged catering to the vast changes taking place in the present day social situation. The quality of research depends on the understanding of the research problem, the attendant research methodology and the appropriate tools used for the analysis. This one week workshop will focus on qualitative research techniques, experimental research design and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

While making biochar in lab or workshop using systems like muffle furnace or fixed bed pyrolyser or other pyrolyser systems, the nitrogen gas inlet (inert gas) should be placed within the pyrolysis reactor (like in picture B) or outside of the reactor in the furnace space (like in picture A)?
Also, the vapor outlet should be directly connected to the pyrolysis reactor (like in picture B) or just to the furnace (like in picture A)?
Thank you so much for your answers.
Relevant answer
Answer
The set up in Figure B is the correct way to carry out pyrolysis. The aim of using nitrogen (Helium or Argon will also suffice) is create an inert environment and purge out evolved gases (condensable and non condensable gases) so that the feedstock undergoes pyrolysis as opposed to combustion (oxidising environment).
That said, the set up in Figure A will also undergo pyrolysis, however the mass yield of biochar will be lower with higher ash compared to the biochar from Figure B. For comparison, you can carry out the experiments under both conditions and you will be able to confirm this.
Hope this helps. Best regards,
BBN

Please inform me if there's any information about it.

Answer
I'd like to add what has been suggested by Ian. In developing curriculum which ideally will "produce" graduates that match to the needs of the market, you should invite experts or people who are already in the field for tapping their insights and experiences. So the curriculum, especially for vocational study programs, should focused more on practical issues than theoretical aspects.

Question

Hi there,
I prepare material for training workshops I'm looking for guidelines for how much should I charge/get if I prepare the content and someone else gives the material as a trainer repeated times.
For example, if we agreed that I take 50%, I'm looking for guidelines for how much I should take the second time he/she gives the material even if I did nothing the second time.
I need neutral ways to decide job offers (especially free-lance work) such as "last offer arbitration".
So here's my question: Can you recommend individuals/ institutions who can work as third party mediators/arbitrators to settle how much each side should take (especially when the service is repeated)? In agreements in general and/or the specific case of preparing training content for trainers.
Relevant answer
Answer
Perhaps you seek proposals for value apportionment guidelines in relation to a particular type of cooperative venture; or perhaps you are running an informal experiment to assess how much value arbitrators are willing to provide for free.
I accept commercial arbitration mandates.
Considering that you seek a "neutral" process, final offer arbitration (FOA) apparently is not appropriate for your purposes. FOA is not neutral. It works by introducing uncertainty, thereby encouraging the parties to settle in order to avoid the risk FOA creates.
The situation you describe may more appropriately be approached as copyright license valuation task. If the parties in a particular case were to agree upon this modality, I would commence the process with a conference to understand the history and nature of the copyright material. At the conference you (as the copyright holder) would be required to present financial data, if any, associated with the copyright material. Each party would be required to state the envisaged number of instances of use of the copyright material and the time period over which such use may occur. Negotiation may be required to achieve agreement on this point - but to limit arbitration costs, the parties would be advised to agree in advance. I would prepare a conference protocol and require each party to sign it. Then I would proceed to craft an award informed by market-based information on sales, licensing transactions, royalty rates, and other data for comparable copyrights. Based on the circumstances of the particular case, I would project cash flows attributable to, and avoided due to, the copyright. I would then convert the projected cash flows to a net present value using a discount rate reflecting the relative uncertainty of the cash flows. The award could be, but need not be, in the form of a specified price per use of the copyrighted material. The parties may prefer to manage risk by agreeing to abide by an award in the form of a license agreement of specified duration at a fixed license fee.

Please provide information regarding workshops related to Grid Computing in IITs and NITs and other reputed institutions in India.
Relevant answer
Answer
Grid computing system is a widely distributed resource for a common goal. It is Brother of Cloud Computing and Sister of Supercomputer. We can think the grid is a distributed system connected to a single network. This types of computing work with the large volume of files. Basically, it is a cluster types system. So people call it cluster computing.
Grid computer tends to be more geographically disperse and heterogeneous by nature. Grid network also has various types. A single grid is like dedicated connection but a common grid perform multiple tasks.
The size of the grid is large. So grid computing is like supercomputing. It consists of many network, computer, and middleware. Grid computer is dedicated to some specific function of the large volume of data. In the grid process, each task divided into a various process. All the process starts execution simultaneously on a different computer. As a result, very few seconds needs to execute and enjoy the flavor of supercomputing.

Dear Applied Linguists,
This is an observation, much limited to my Pakistani context, that linguistics is comparatively a very new field. However, it is gaining momentum and ground in Pakistan through various university programs and a lot of research is being undertaken on various issues related to language(s).
But here comes the problem, the research that we produce is limited to only our linguistic departments, the discourse too is limited to conferences, symposiums, workshops, seminars and private discussions and classroom discussions. We do not connect with the public and masses who are the actual beneficiaries of this research. There is a gulf of distance between us and them. Have we identified the means through which we can reach them? Can we really do that? How to get to them? This question is for all practitioners and researchers to brainstorm ideas about this problem at the hand.
Relevant answer
Answer
The debate over translingualism and code meshing is one alternative to what you suggest. If you take the role of what one may call Pakistani-English not as a dialect of standard English but as a language in itself, then you can see the role that applied linguists are playing in terms of exploring the relationship between language and power or social context. In this way, language is connected to grammar and communication, but the problem is how do you incorporate that in the classroom. That's why in some journals, applied linguists are required to discuss the teaching implications of their research, even though their insights may or may not be of value to ELT.

Part of my proposal is doing focus group interviews with 12-18 years old patients. I know from experience that this is a tricky group to interview but at the same time, an often neglected patient population group. After coming from a Lego Serious play workshop, I find it really interesting and in my head, lego's seems to be work across age groups (i.e. teenagers won't necessarily find it childish and adult parents will definitely find it interesting!)
I am thinking of using Lego Serious play to: 1. elicit patient narratives on the experience of fatigue, and 2. to find out their ideas on possible solutions - what it would look like and what would make it work?
Signpost to literature and best practice tips will be greatly appreciated.

Student ratings of instruction certainly are unreliable at judging quality instruction. Sure, they can provide indications of good or bad performance but they cannot be the measure. In my department, we count a combination of student reviews, formal peer review, advising students, and teaching workshops / conferences attended as to measure effective teaching.
What does your department / university do to measure quality teaching for the purpose of tenure / promotion? How well do you feel the system works?
Thank you in advance!

Hi, Colton,
My institution uses student evaluations alone, but we utilize IDEA evaluation forms, so the student scores can be compared to national, institutional, and disciplinary norms. Our former director of assessment conducted several factor analysis studies on the IDEA questionnaires and determined that they all basically measured one construct - whether or not the students believed that the instructor created a classroom environment in which the students could learn. He was not a big fan of the IDEA weighting of student responses, so he believed that the higher of the student scores (raw or adjusted) should be used in the comparisons.

Basically my focus for my cap stone project is that those of us who are interested in Kink, BDSM, and human sexuality seem to be in a sort of specialization echo chamber. We're only really reaching out to those who have an interest in Kink/BDSM culture or potentially therapists who have a client who just admitted they are in the Kink/BDSM culture. So how do we reach out to helpers who have no interest in sexuality, have no understanding of Kink/BDSM culture, or in the worst case who may heavily judge and stigmatize/pathologize their clients for being a part of the Kink/BDSM culture?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Alexandra, good question.
How do we engage clinicians who most need to understand Kink/BDSM culture?
Here is what we are doing and recommend others do.
1) we are actively engaged with developing clinical guidelines on training for kink knowledgeablity through a group of internationally reknowned clinical psychologists (clinicians, researchers and academics). This groups intention is to have these recommendations accepted by the APA for clinical best practice.
2) we wrote Becomeing a Kink Aware Therapist which is aimed at all clinicians. We find it intersting, that many non kink therapists from around the world are reading this!
3) we are establishing online education internationally available via www.KinkKnowledgeable.com. these classes are now APA CE credit approved. Our niche market is not kink identified therapists.
4) we speak and give workshops at traditional training venues for professionals.
5) we have had several discussions with various universities to partner with them and provide our classes as electives. In the long run we are aiming to include the foundation classes to be included in minimum standards for sexuality and counselor training.
Our experience has been that non kink identified practitioners are extremely keen to have access to our classes. In fact our experience with kink "aware" practitioners is that they do not feel they need any further education in these areas.
We are working working diligently with all our affiliates and partners to bring awareness to non kink identified clinicians. We have all noticed a major shift in attitude towards greater openness to understand this genre over the past couple of years. I think our collective efforts combined with increasing visibility of BDSM related interests are converging towards a change in clinical practice.
i hope this helps. We can only encourage and support others like yourself in making your contribution along with others to add to what is appearing to become a river of consciousness change.
Please stay in touch let us know what you are doing. My email is caroline@kinkknowledgeable.com.

I happened to attend a workshop on environmental education conducted by several experts and volunteers from Australia. I come up with a question in mind: Could we implement environmental education topics into the teaching of English as a foreign language? If any researcher finds this interesting, why don't we co-operate to work on this project?
Relevant answer
Answer
The approach will be quite interesting. For example, in Kenya integrated English is taught at secondary school level. The curriculum does not only integrate the literature part but all other subjects are substantially included by way of comprehension passages on various areas such as environmental conservation, pollution, forestation and wildlife  among others. The composition writing at all levels of education could also be a good area to incorporate environmental education in English teaching.
Kind regards,
David.

Has anyone participated in the mouse microsurgery and small animal echocardiography workshop organized by the Northeast Ohio Medical University? How good is it? Is it worthwhile to travel from Holland to this course?
Your advise is greatly appreaciated.
Relevant answer
Answer
I participated in this workshop in 2014 as a postdoc and thought it was excellent for my needs. I had observed numerous surgical procedures and performed human and animal echo before attending, but I wanted to perform PV loops and TAC surgeries.  (You don't need prior experience, but you might get the info faster if you have some.)
The best part for me was having a dedicated week to practice surgical technique. We were provided several mice per day. (You will still need to go home and practice before starting an experiment.) They provided nearly 1 staff for every 2 participants and all were very generous with their time. The organizer and most of the staff have experience so they can help you troubleshoot if you ask them questions.  They also have reps/techs from ADInstruments, Transonics, and Visualsonics.
Their website lists all of the surgical techniques, and if you or your trainee were starting from scratch, it can be a good way to get started. I spent most of my time on 1 or 2 procedures, but with their teaching and handouts, I could probably do all of the techniques (for example I never attempted an MI but I understand the steps). I think about half of my cohort focused on a specific technique, while half tried everything at least once. You don't need buy tools ahead of time, so your costs are travel and course fees. Their materials also provide a comprehensive list of tools for each technique and step-by-step protocols.
Is it worth traveling? For me it was worth the short drive to have the dedicated time/training. On the other hand, if there was someone at my institution (or close by) that I could have collaborated with to save my funds, I might not have gone -and I doubt I would have traveled overseas. While I had a good experience, I recommend staying in Holland because of costs unless 1) can't find someone to teach you, 2) you need the dedicated learning time, or 3) you are certain you will perform at least one technique regularly in your lab. Here in the US, there are plenty of experienced core-labs and/or collaborators who could better perform these experiments for investigators for individual studies. I think you can find similar in Holland/near by in Europe.
If you want echo training and have access to a Visualsonics system, I'd recommend asking a collaborator or Visualsonics for onsite training. (I recommend this even if you do attend the workshop; there was very limited time to work with the ultrasound system.)

We are having a workshop in Auckland in 2 weeks to consider urban pressures on the horizon.  The challenge is to think of new ideas, or issues poorly studied, rather than the usual problems or exacerbators of the usual problems. Your ideas would be welcome.
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Margaret
I think "urban ecosystem" must be given special attention because it is an artificial ecosystem. Indeed, the human concentration in cities and expanding urbanization generate a new ecosystem that is superimposed and interferes with the natural ecosystem: the urban ecosystem. An ecosystem is exposed to constant changes that can compromise its coherence and resilience. So it is always in unstable equilibrium, that is, in a situation of dynamic crisis. This is the case of the urban ecosystem that needs an increasingly wide area to meet its needs and compensate for impacts, and is characterized by a growing ecological footprint. One of the goals of sustainable development is to identify or reduce this footprint. It seems to me that the major challenges in the urban ecosystem are represented by the major hazards: floods, earthquakes, and also risks of industrial units explosions to toxic pollutants population.
