In the wake of the pandemic, my role as a researcher and professor has undergone a significant transformation. The initial pivot to remote work, a necessity during lockdowns, has persisted in the form of a hybrid academic practice. This has, on one hand, infused my daily routine with a level of flexibility previously unimagined. I recall the early days of virtual lectures, where the dining table became a makeshift classroom, and family life hummed along in the background—a stark departure from the cloistered halls of the university. Yet, this merging of spaces has also entailed a continuous negotiation of boundaries, as the campus has, in a sense, extended into the home. The 'always on' culture that accompanied remote accessibility has sometimes encroached upon the sacred quietude of personal life, compelling me to draw invisible but imperative lines to preserve the sanctity of home.
The impact on wellbeing has been equally nuanced. The solitude imposed by the pandemic heightened a communal yearning for connection, catalyzing a shift toward more empathetic academic interactions. I remember the virtual coffee breaks that we, as colleagues, instituted, serving as a testament to our adaptive spirit and the newfound value placed on mental health. Yet, the digital interface, while invaluable, often lacks the warmth of physical presence, the chance hallway conversations that spark collaboration, or the impromptu student encounters that so often lead to mentorship. Rekindling these spontaneous interactions within a digital framework has required intentionality, a dedicated crafting of moments that aim to mimic the erstwhile effortless camaraderie of campus life.
Navigating this recalibrated academic landscape has also prompted introspection on the very concept of work-life balance in a post-pandemic world. It's been an impetus to re-envision work habits and personal boundaries. The flexibility now embedded in our academic structures has allowed for a personal recalibration—prioritizing tasks with an acute awareness of time and setting firmer boundaries has become central to maintaining equilibrium. The pandemic's enduring impact is not just the shifts in our daily routines but also a collective awakening to the importance of our wellbeing in sustaining the vibrancy of academic life. Dear colleagues, I am working on a research conference paper "Why isn't teaching popular anymore?" I invite education researchers from several countries (1 person from a country) to cooperate. At the moment I'm making up a questionnaire including the following sections: prestige / public perceptions; interest towards the profession / career aspirations; job security / safety; lack of teacher autonomy; stress and burnout; lack of trust; work-life balance / family commitment; career development / progress; salary; insufficient support; working conditions; student discipline and motivation; relationships with parents. Each section will involve 3-5 items. Anybody interested please contact me. Your contribution may range from a) writing / suggesting part of literature review; b) development of the questionnaire; c) applying the questionnaire in your country via social media and personal connections (I will need minimum 100 respondents from one country); d) any combination of the above. I am trying to compare working from home ( Independed variable 1) and working in an office( IV2) in terms of wellbeing, work-life balance and productivity (3 Dependent variables).
The study used repeated measures and the data was collected via questionnaire. On SPSS each of my variables are both part of the IV and the DV ( eg. variable 1= wellbeing levels when working from home).
To check for normality I did Kolmogrov Smirnov non parametric test ,however, my data resulted to not be normally distributed .
How would you suggest me to proceed from here? is there another way I can check for normality and maybe get a different result?
I would also like to compare the results of productivity, wellbeing and work-life balance in both working conditions in terms of gender, nationality and age of the participants to see whether working from home satisfaction varies across the population.
Would it be appropriate to run a MANOVA or would it be better to run an ANOVA?

Ronán Michael Conroy My thought was that the fact that the MANOVA DV is a mashup of the other DVs isn't much of an issue if they are accounting for negligible variation and positively correlated, however, I would not want to advocate this with any conviction. There certainly would be more principled approaches.

Hi, my dissertation research was conducted using a questionnaire and it's all quantitative, there were no open answers on the questionnaire.
I used Likert scale for some of the questions and I want to analyse the results of these Likert scales to see if the answers given here are statistically significant. Is that possible? Or do I need to compare the Likert scale questions/answers with one of the previous answers/variables.
The research is focusing on the relationship between working mothers and work-life balance. Some of the questions included: "Being a working mother has made it difficult to balance work and home life." "Flexible working will help create work-family life balance." "Flexible working is a good solution for working mothers to balance work and family life." "I have enough time to look after my children and take some time to myself after work."
Is it possible to assess the statistical significance of these - and if so which test would I run? Or are these descriptive analytics?
I have used SPSS before but it's been a while, I've watched a lot of Youtube videos but I'm finding myself getting very overwhelmed with all the different tests and how to run them and interpret them.

Your use of the term “statistical significance” implies there is some sort of statistical test being applied in response to a stated hypothesis. Is there a hypothesis and if so, what is it? In the absence of knowing your research questions, one can speculate what you are trying to accomplish with your study.
With respect to your item results, it’s possible to provide descriptive statistics about the item-level results of your survey items. It’s also possible to sum the item scores and provide descriptive statistics about those results.
You indicate you are studying “the relationship between working mothers and work-life balance.” This indicates to me that your study may be a correlational study. If so, then the statistical significance would center on the degree of the relationship between these two variables as measured by the correlation coefficient.

I’m facing an interesting and challenging problem on how I should view the variables in my regression analysis. In short, my research questions revolve around if men and women from entrepreneurship education get the same pay and career progression or not. My three dependent variables are Income (scale), Position (in corporate hierarchy, 5-point ordinal) and the perceived work-life balance (5-point ordinal). My independent variables are occupation (employed, self-employed, etc., (categorical)), gender and post-education start-up experience (dummy, yes/no). Then I have a set of control variables: Country of residence, industry, family status, nr children, nr employments, pre-education startup experience and finally career length.
Here comes the problem. As I investigate my DV using linear regression, career length is very prominent and important for income and position, which is not that surprising given most people due progress in their career. But career length is also affecting both family status and nr children, which is also not surprising given that most people have started a family the longer their career are. But my sample is not equally distributed among career length due to increased class cohorts in recent years and that older alumni have been more difficult to connect with in the data collection. Should I therefore normalize/weight or in other ways transform my data so that the resulting models does take into consideration that some control variables are time-dependent as well? And/or should I do it due to that younger cohorts gets larger weights than their older peer’s? My ai is to extract gender and occupational differences, so career length “power” is somewhat clouding the analysis as of now.
Please suggest how I should proceed.

Greetings, i am looking for a Work-Life Balance Scale but it seems that none is available, all i found was Work-Life Balance Scale by Hayman (2005) but the scales were not included in the published papers, i tried to look for and contact the author but nothing was appearing, the author's email was also included in some papers but the mails were just being sent back to me.

Being a new user of AMOS, few of us are facing problem regarding a few specific questions...
Q1: In the model, if the latent variable has 2/3 sub-constructs and each of those sub-constructs have 3,4 and 2 items respectively then is it correct? ( As in many articles its mentioned the rule of thumb is to have minimum 3 items).
Q2: If any latent variable has 2 sub-constructs and during respecified SEM, one of the sub- construct's factor loading comes .50 should we keep that construct? If we need to take out then should we need to drop the variable?
Q3: During the respecified SEM model, if GFI, TLI, CFI, RMSEA met the threshold but p-value shows .000 then will we call that model as the good fit model or we need to make sure p is .05 and above ( Is Must).
Q4: For continuous moderator ( e.g. Work-Life Balance or Locus of Control), in case of latent construct do we need to have 2 models named constrained and unconstrained (Bryne, 2004). ( If this is the only process in AMOS can we have the steps)
Though its a quite long text but this gonna make analysis easy for new AMOS user, including myself😊

"Flexible work designs'' is my independent variable (9 items measured on a 5 point Likert scale from 1=strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree)
"Employee well-being" is my dependent variable (3 sub-dimensions: engagement, exhaustion and work-life balance, all of them measured with 5 items on a 5-point Likert scale from 1=strongly disagree to 5= strongly agree)

First of all, I would suggest to work on refining your hypotheses (Why are H1a, b, c linked together? What do you mean by FWDs compromise work-life balance?)
Then look at your data and do some preliminary explorative data analysis: check for missing data, look at the distribution of your data, report on the internal consistency of your scales - the most common measure is Cronbach's alpha.
After getting 'a feel for your data' you can then move on to the data analysis phase to find out whether there is a significant relationship between your dependent and independent variables and their sub-dimensions. Afterwards, you can look at their relationship by doing a regression analysis, for instance.

I have been working with my data set for and I hit a snag and I cannot figure out where the issue is.
I am analysing job satisfaction and expected my independent variables to have a positive relationship.
I have analysed my data and all of the assumptions are met for a l for the multiple regression analysis. The model is a moderate good fit , R2 = medium effect size
I have an issue with the coefficients.
The coefficients are all negative, even though I expected them to be positive. For example, this means that an increase in leader member exchange, or work-life balance - or organisational identity, job satisfaction decreases.
I'm not sure whether I can proceed with these findings, or where to start looking for this issue as I expected an increase in my independent variables would increase job satisfaction ?

There are other things to check.
1) Is the wording of the question good or could people misinterpret what you intended to ask?
2) Are there other factors that you did not ask about that could cause the outcome? The main factory closed the day before your survey and everyone was unhappy about life in general.
3) Were the questions consistent or were half of them 1=low and 5=high and the other half 1=high and 5=low?
4) Was your sample size sufficient? Especially if the effect is small, it would be easy to draw a small sample given one effect and come to the wrong conclusion.
5) Did you transform variables? An inverse transformation would give this result.
6) Might there be some other factor that was not measured that has a stronger influence on job satisfaction? I know a lot of people that don't really care about their job but do care that they have a job. It pays bills and allows them to do stuff. Grinding another leaf sample under liquid nitrogen is just not that exciting no matter how nice the boss may be.

Hello,
I am currently preparing a survey for my master's thesis that involves measuring aspects of employee organizational outcomes, including job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intentions.  I have run into issues finding any trace of an official copy of the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS-6) from any published academic paper or source.  For the purposes of my study I am specifically interested in the shortened version (six item scale) of the Turnover Intention Scale (not the original 15 item scale).  
Every source I have checked has referenced Gert Roodt, 2004 as the original author and list of the TIS-6 questions.  My search has shown this paper is unpublished, and I have had no luck in finding access to it or the TIS-6 questions.
If anyone has access to/ever used the official TIS-6 questions, or could point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful. Every paper citing the Roodt 2004 paper mentions the TIS-6 but does not provide the questions from the survey (for example, the often cited "Bothma, C.F.C., & Roodt, G. (2013). The validation of the turnover intention scale" publication).

I intend to work on work life balance (WLB) and work life conflict (WLC) for my final thesis. Is it wise to make your own questionnaire or use inventories of WLB, and conflict ?
I also want guidance in relation to how to go about it. If anybody could be generous to help this researcher in distress?

I am afraid I disagree with the idea of making up your new questionnaire. This is an area with lots of instruments available already, and it takes a very long time and lots of expertise to develop a new measure. Please refer to our methodological review for all available measures.
I would agree that work and life balance is a very well researched area already. I recommend you look at new context for its application. For example this is a newish topic in the area of entrepeurship. As entrepreneurs don’t have clear boundaries around their work time and family time, it is quite a challenge for them.
I suggest you search for your key words such as work and life balance, then add “review” or ‘meta analysis’ in your search. This will help you find the latest review that summarizes the literature. They usually recommend areas for future research as well.

As work-life balance is an abstract concept, different scholars have defined it differently. My suggestion is to develop a working definition for it. 
Balance between work life and family life is defined as the degree to which you fulfil demands coming from your employment and your family. If you fulfil the respective demands in the way that generates satisfaction, it is possible to say that you have a right balance between work and family. If you cannot meet the respective demands and the relevant parties are dissatisfied, it is possible to say that you have an imbalance between work and family. Work-Family Balance can also be defined as your ability to meet your employer’s expectations and your family members’ expectations to the extent that makes them happy. It involves having sufficient time, energy and competencies to meet commitments at both work and home.
The following is a set of some question statements as an attempt to measure one's perception about his or her degree of Work-Family Balance (with use of 5-point Likert scale):
  1. Almost there are no complaints or grievances from my spouse about what I am supposed to do at home.
  2. There are many grievances and complaints from my children about my inability to live with them.
  3. My parents are really happy about my behavior of meeting their responsibilities.
  4. My contribution to smooth running of family affairs is indeed very much.

If anything, location seems to matter more and more. In opposition to Thomas Friedman’s book, The World is Flat, Richard Florida has argued that the world is not flat but spiky: increasingly, economic activity concentrates in relatively few areas—spike cities to which creative talent migrates and in which it coalesces. (Florida's article, The World Is Spiky, appeared in The Atlantic Monthly in October 2005.) But what of personnel and industries in other, less spiky areas, the valleys to which this question presumably alludes? Even if such a model cannot develop overnight this means, at least in theory, that irrespective of location companies should connect capabilities across spikes so talented people, wherever they are, may using information and communications technology leverage the skills of others and learn from one another. Toward this, companies should forge long-term, trust-based relationships with one another to pursue opportunities for innovation and capability building across spikes. This suggest they should invest a lot more in communities and networks of practice. (That might be part of their branding too, of sorts.)

Assuming the goal of work/life balance proponents is to foster mental health (and not just to more unproblematically extract labor), I find the concept to be counterproductive. The concepts of life or balance get considerably deformed in this formulation. At least work/non-work balance would avoid a false dichotomy.
I'm in good company here, with a handful of contributions from Maria Popova addressing the uselessness of the term. She writes:

if you have only 2 groups to compare (women live with their husbands and separated women) then you dont go with ANOVA but ttest.
The dependent variable is only measured on one item (1-5 scale) or a valid Likert scale with many items, if many items, then you do the total score and compare between the 2 groups using indpenednt sample ttest.
however, if the DV is only 5 steps, and you have only 2 groups as IV, then you need to use the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test

We investigate the matured workforce’ employment possibility from the point of view of the health by comparing relevant data of Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria. We used the method of correlation and regression (enter method) analysis to find the connection between the health/social contribution/benefit system related service data and employment.
In Austria the most important factors are social benefit (not unemployment, or housing or sickness related) 83.5%, the Death ischemic 96.2% diseases and the cancer 95.1% to the employment rate of older workers. In Czeh Republic and Hungary the employment rate of older workers could be explained by some kind of social expenditure, may be heritage of the previous political system, although in Czech Republic it results the highest rate of employment of this age group.

I am planning a cross-cultural study that includes developed and developing countries. My research questions deal with the effects of the provision of care for labour market participation. Typically, the provision of care is studied in developed countries using Esping-Andersen’s typology and in developing countries using variations of Evers et al (1994) or Razavi 2007 “care diamond”. The Esping-Andersen typology is a poor choice for developing countries but the concept of a care diamond could be an appropriate concept in both developed and developing countries. The concept of the care diamond considers  that actors other than the state, market and family may be engaged in the provision of welfare services to citizens in a country. The above conept is called the welfare triangle and is often used when studying provision of welfare services in developed western societies.
The care diamond is called a diamond because it considers and values contributions from the civil society in addition to those provided through the triangle construction presented above. Services from the civil community may take the form of charities and other private or semi-private organisations as well as informal groups such as neighbours, friends or other persons. These services may be of central importance in developing countries where the welfare state is less developed.
I am interested in understanding the importance of  welfare service provision through the care diamond in both developed and developing countries. My thesis is that the centrality of care in both models may have herethereto unexplored similar/different gender consequences for women. Research using the care diamond concept could provide new knowledge on these issues.

UPDATE 28 Feb, 2014: The Global Young Academy has initiated an international study to better understand the “Global State of Young Scientists”.
"A major aim of the project is to enhance the current knowledge about young scholars’ career paths and prospects in different parts of the world by conducting the first systematic, global study on the challenges and opportunities that young scholars face in today’s system of science."

There is a great deal of literature out there, see for example the research of David Guest, Jeffery Hill, Suzan Lewis or Jeffery Greenhaus plus all of the people they usually do research with. There is a problem that you should be aware of, these researchers are all writing from a Western (Europe USA) perspective using instruments, models and tools designed for a Western context. What works for them may not be applicable to for your work. Try to find research on WLB by researchers working from a cross-national perspective where the local context and cultural differences are included in the model design. Good luck!

My colleagues and I ran panel discussions for science & engineering college major focused on balancing family with careers in science/engineering/computer science research. We have nice data two years in a row to show the outcomes in changed attitudes. Can someone suggest a good journal for a short paper? This was one activity in an undergraduate research program designed to attract more students to careers in science and engineering/computer science research.
