The most useful things I can contribute from my experience:
#1 Please make sure your ppt is easy to read for the whole audience (even at the back of the theatre)
#2 please make sure you do not go overtime with your rehearsals - there is nothing worse than if they tell you at the limit that is the end (for example, if the session chairperson announces this) and you do not get to your key message(s)... unfortunately you look very bad and it feels like your talk/presentation is wasted after all your effort

No, this is not possible. To study a galaxy in detail, one has to observe in different wavelength (optical, radio, ...), and for this different telescopes are needed. Even when you restrict to optical wavelengths, you will need different auxiliary instruments like special spectrographs etc., which may not be all available at one telescope. Also, observing time on large telescopes is very limited and valuable, and you do not need a large telecopes for all kinds of observations. Therefore, when a smaller telescope fullfils your demands you do not have to apply for time at a large telescope (which will also not be allocated if this large telescope is not needed for your observing plan). - By the way, it is not possible to determine "all" parameters of a galaxy. The nearer a galaxy is, the more details can be observed.

As the world becomes more complex and interconnected, the importance of systems thinking is rising, with engineering being no exception to this trend. Should we as engineering educators aim to teach and train our students in systems thinking from the get-go (first year, first semester), or should we wait for later years when they're acquired more discipline-specific (electrical, mechanical, etc.) knowledge and skills? In other words, is there value in teaching systems thinking to novices, even in a basic way?
Relevant answer
Answer
Oleksandr Tarasov indeed, but I've heard arguments (like some have argued here) that we shouldn't teach systems thinking in the first year of engineering education, because the students don't have the required knowledge and skills to make sense of it or apply it.

Hi all,
I have used the 12 Item version of the Community Attitudes to Mental Illness (CAMI) scale for my undergraduate dissertation. The scale uses Likert measurements where positive statements are scored
'1' Strongly agree = 100
'2' = Somewhat agree = 75
'3' = 'Neither agree not disagree' = 50
'4' = Somewhat disagree = 75
'5' = Strongly disagree = 0
However, there is also a 6th option of 'don't know' the original paper states those choosing this option are excluded from the total score. Do I need to code this 6th option in order to exclude it? I have tried the select cases function but its still including the 6th option in the total score. Very confused! Any advice will be greatly apprieciated.

You may want to consider specific examples of case-study themes of societal change. For example, traditional learning relied on memory and non-government education into the last half of the 20th-century. Whereas, 21st-century learning is transitioning back to independent and communal learning using digital communication and artificial memory (e.g. cell phones, computers) which influence and change social development.
Specific historic and current examples from several countries are used in my Relating to Ancient series of books. Here are a few quotes to see if my work fits your criteria.
1."...The ability to learn, memorize, think, theorize, conceptualize and calculate are crucial to societal development. Artificial memory is likely hampering all” (Relating to Ancient Learning as it influences the 21st Century, p. 346).
2. “…Interrupted by the ever-incoming emails, media notices, social media pop-ups, text, and cellphone calls, it appears electronic communications designed to make employees more efficient is actually decreasing productivity and especially long-term conceptual thinking” (Learning, pg. 378).
3. "Local, national, and world leisure will decrease innovation as more time will be spent relaxing, not inventing" (Relating to Ancient Culture and the mysterious agent changing it, p. 253).

Educational technology is a field of knowledge with Bachelor and Master programs and uses the most current and advanced technologies in nowadays teaching-learning processes.
It started in Spanish with the name TIC - Technology of the Information and Communication, but due to the actual circumstances, it expanded in several directions, some of them with their own teaching philosophies.

I was taught that a curriculum developer must have conducted research for 10-15 years in the field or taught that discipline for over a decade to be qualified to review or develop its content.
Many private institutions in my country region and recently some public ones hire "multidisciplinary experts" with training in one discipline that has little or no relationships with the content of the course to be taught to teach undergraduate or graduate students
It is commonly noticed that non experts in fields are not only reading to teach but now develop the curriculum for those courses or disciplines.
Many years of teaching or conducting research avails the scientist of the teacher with the content to be taught or to be instructed for teaching.
kindly contribute to this discussion so we evade an educational fiasco
Relevant answer
Answer
Successful curriculum development is collaborative. No person can do it without input from all stakeholders, namely its learners, teachers, industry, commerce, industry, agriculture, mining etc. Subject expertise is but one of several necessary inputs.

Dear Claudio Klaus Junior , I am Fulbright fellow. I was in US for two years, doing my Ph.D.
But, this article brought me some concern - story from Afdganistan!
The federal law that governs the prestigious Fulbright scheme grants power over all policies and procedures to the programme’s board. That was ignored when the State Department decided to end the Fulbright foreign scholarship programme in Afghanistan last month, a board member warns today. Protocol aside, the decision also left scores of scholars at risk of lethal punishment at the hands of the Taliban. “They may be hunted down and killed as a result of the Western-style education that they already received,” says Heather Nauert, a former State Department spokeswoman. Many had rejected other chances to leave Afghanistan in the hope of securing a postgraduate fellowship in the US, reports Pola Lem. What hope do they have now?

I am currently working on my undergraduate dissertation project which uses the BFI scale to assess personality traits in students.
Would an expert in this field please be able to let me know if I am doing my scoring correctly (I am doing this manually without SPSS for now).
I have currently reversed the items as listed on the original BFI eg. Extraversion: 1, 6R, 11, 16, 21R, 26, 31R, 36.
I will then add these up for each participant eg. Extraversion: 5, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4 = 30
Is the next step to average this total?? eg. 30 / 8 = 3.75

A long time ago, scientific research was mysterious, recognized as the patent for Ph.D. candidates. However, with the development of society, scientific research is becoming more accessible and convenient. Nowadays, even undergraduates can participate in scientific research without any difficulty. There even present some specially designed programs to support undergraduates for their research. Such as the student research training program (SRTP). These activities help students develop their lab skills and critical thinking and make it possible for undergraduate students to find their future career direction. Apart from these advantages, there still existed some disadvantages. Firstly, the Ph.D. candidate, staff, and PI in the laboratory are generally busy, so it is hard to take time to guide students personally. Secondly, It is difficult for undergraduates to form their views on experiments or lab techniques because they have not thoroughly studied the theories of biology. Additionally, Due to the lack of fund support, it is nearly impossible for undergraduates to carry out research independently and finally make achievements. Last but not least, undergraduates participating in scientific research will increase the pressure of social competition, resulting in some dire consequences. What do you think of the current situation of Undergraduates' participation in scientific research?
Relevant answer
Answer
I consider it reasonable for an undergrad to do scientific research as long as an MSc or Ph.D. supervises them.

I am currently working on an undergraduate thesis on interruptive smartphone push notifications' (banner-type) influence on online users' (weak) comprehension and (loss of) interest in online news. I found this thought to be a possible threat not only to the relevance of online news when competing with the rapid-growing attention economy but also, and more importantly, a threat to the purpose of journalism that is delivering the truth.
I think that qualitative surveys could possibly be applicable to my research questions (descriptively written above) however, I am unsure if it fits a grounded theory. If not, what could you possibly suggest?
Thank you, in advance! :)
Relevant answer
Answer
Grounded theory is a well-known approach that is used in a wide range of research activities. In a grounded theory research, both qualitative and quantitative data generating approaches might be employed.
Although many people refer to Grounded Theory as a qualitative approach, it is not. It is an approach that may be used in a variety of situations. It is the methodical development of theory based on systematic study. It is a series of rigorous research techniques that result in the creation of conceptual categories.
A smart strategy is to use grounded theory to analyze your data and produce a theory. Your survey questions can then be based on what you've discovered in the literature as well as your own queries.

I am trying to study the influence of internship on students' perception on their readiness to enter workforce.
For this I have collected responses from undergraduate students with Likert scale 5-point (strongly disagree-strongly agree). The scale is ordinal for both my DV and IV. Now I'm not sure how to analyse my data.
Would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

I have finished almost all the courses in my undergraduate civil engineering program. I want to have very in-depth and exceptional level of understanding in structural engineering. My cgpa is very low as I was not serious in my undergrad. I want to achieve the level of expertise & knowledge within 2 to 3 years what usually people get after 10-15 years of experience. Also should I ask this type question in the "question" or "discussion" section here?
Relevant answer
Answer
I also recommend that you re-read (i.e. re-examine) your past core textbooks and read the latest - if possible! When you re-read your past material you will better understand them! Usually, when we graduate, we would have a different approach to past material and experiences!

So for doing this study I m using Academic Stress Scale , but the Author of the questionnaire is expired. Now from whom should I get the copyrights Permission to use this scale in my Research Project. Kindly help me out.
Thanks in Advance.

Answer
Dear Vijaya, I also think that there is no need to seek copyrights Permission. You are using Academic Stress Scale for your research project. You just have to cite the original source of the scale in your text now and after that when you will publish your work, you have to cite it properly in your publication. Thank you.

Greetings
One of the most major problems of writing an undergraduate article is the lack of access to a laboratory and a professor to check the accuracy of article information in the laboratory.
For example, at my university, only postgraduate, PhD and postdoctoral students are allowed to work in the laboratory. What should an undergraduate student do if he or she wants to write an article and extract the information needed for his or her paper from the lab?
Undergraduate students do not have access to professors and laboratories to verify their ideas, what should they do to write an article?
Can he write another type of article that is published in a valid journal but does not require laboratory information? Or can he collaborate with a foreign professor to write an article?
What is the solution to the problem?

Dear Pejman Rahmani Nejad many thanks for asking this very important technical question, which is certainly of broad general interest to many RG members. I'm afraid that my answer is not what you want to hear, but of course you are absolutely free to ignore it. My initial thought was: Why should an undergraduate student write a scientific article? In my personal opinion (which might be somewhat old-fashioned) the main job of an undergraduate student is to attend lectures, courses, and seminars, collect basic knowledge and pass exams. Especially in your discipline, chemistry, you can only write a scientific article if you have new results to report, and new results can normally be achieved only in the lab (if it is not theoretical chemistry). Moreover, you need to have a supervisor / senior scientist / principal investigator who conceicves the research and acts as corresponding author. Writing of a review article is also not a good idea at the undergraduate stage, as you must be a proven expert in the field covered by the review. Thus, in the end, why don't you just be patient and wait until you worked on an own research project and have sufficient new results to publish?
Good luck and best wishes, Frank Edelmann

We are investigating the impact of online learning environment on sustained attention and student engagement among undergraduate students (Year 1-3).
We had the participants watch a lecture video and answer multiple choice questions related to the content of the video. We also had them fill an engagement questionnaire which had questions about their involvement with peers and various university related activities.
Hypothesis I - 1st year students are able to focus more over a long period of time than 2nd and 3rd year students.
Hypothesis II - 1st year students actively participate and are more engaged with peers than 2nd and 3rd year students.
My questions are:
1. What statistical test would be most appropriate?
2. How do I set a value to prove significance...for example they had 13 MCQ questions, how do I know what number of questions they need to have answered correctly in order to say they paid more attention?
I'm very lost, i'd appreciate your help and any remarks that could provide me some clarity.

Answer
Are you familiar with the expression, "getting the cart before the horse"? I'm afraid that's what you're facing. If so, that's not an impossible situation, but it can be a daunting one. Deciding what statistical analysis you will use is normally part of the research design, so you are sure that the data you gather can be analyzed in a way that will answer your research questions. that is normally done before you begin any data collection. I agree with what MOST of the others have recommended, but you cannot apply ANOVA, for example, unless you have quantitative data, and you did not describe the data you received from the surveys. If you solicited qualitative answers to the survey questions, you cannot apply quantitative statistical analysis to it. You will have to quantify that data or apply qualitative data analysis methods to it and have a blended study. There is nothing wrong with having a blended study, but is is more complex than a qualitative or quantitative one. You may need someone on site who can actually see what you did to help you sort it out. I wish I were there! I'd love the challenge!

The decline in students’ skills had lead medical educators to think of alternative options to maintain betterment of clinical skills among medical students.
What about the option of paying patients/persons to be subject of BST?
Any ethical barriers?
Relevant answer
Answer
I am a recently retired instructor for first and 2nd year clinical skills; also an examiner for OSCEs. Our SPs were paid. I think about $20CDN/hour. They allowed us to use their bodies for physical examinations. Some are very well rehearsed "actors" but others were real patients and had true medical histories and physical findings. Most of the real patients were volunteering because they "wanted to give back". Through the years I established lasting relationships with many of them. (and the students and I picked up diagnoses that had been missed). Now that I am no longer allowed to be an instructor or an examiner (because I refuse to pay the medical licensing bureaucracy of British Columbia $300CDN/year) I've volunteered to be an SP. I hope give back in a different way and perhaps in a better way. Something for us olde fartes to consider.

this problem may answer the questions "How cutting-edge is the undergraduate education?" and "How fast is the subject development?".
Relevant answer
Answer
Apparently, your question is how quickly the knowledge obtained by a graduate of a university (institute) becomes obsolete. For example, if a specialist graduated from a university 15 years ago, can he adequately work in his specialty?
It seems to me that everything depends on the quality of the education received and the desire to constantly improve their qualifications and is in the topic of modern research in its section. Apparently, there are no restrictions for the basic sciences.
For engineering specialties, periodic professional retraining is required at the Institute of advanced training every 10-15 years. This is due to the rapid change of devices, the element base, the emergence of new materials and research methods.

I have an undergraduate student that would like to test natural methods of parasitic nematode prevention but our culture from local soil is not along as far as we would like and we need to infect plants in a few weeks.
Relevant answer
Answer
Even if you obtain the isolate, you need at least 3-4 months to multiply the source culture. Tech: carrot discs or excised corn roots in the MS medium. 4000 worms in Petri dish, you may calculate the number of plates you need. Life cycle of Pratylenchus spp. (G, generation) is 45 days, population cycle as mentioned above = 3-6 months. The Pratylenchus life cycle is much longer than that of saprobionts or Bursaphelenchus or Steinernema (3-7 days). No lab can supply you with desired number of worms immediately. Unfortunately you need to make culture yourself from your local isolate (from cereals).

I am in the 2nd year of my undergraduate and I am very much interested in doing research in biology, chemistry and physics! I saw research opportunities under my professors but they are too complex for me to even think about it! However, I had this thought that famous scientists, like Issac Newton, never did any complex experiments. So, it's also possible that I can think & observe the world around me & figure out something like that too! So, I had a couple of questions to begin my this adventure:
  1. Does research has to be unique and something that has never done before?
  2. How can I think of research topics/questions? or is there a website to which researchers refer in order to find a research question?
  3. If I conduct research at home, can I still try to publish in a well-known publication if they like it?
I would really appreciate if someone can help me to explain in detail all the things, I need to do in order to begin thinking & doing my research!

Does it all depend on what you intend to do as an electrical engineer?
Research or go to industria? As you are writing in the RG, I imagine it is for scientific research?
If so, you can: Research new models of bladeless wind generators, wearable electronics, construction of circuits via additive manufacturing (with 3D printing) and automation with industrial internet of things (IoT).
Good luck!
Stay healthy!
