Hello forum members,
I'm conducting research on vegetable oil fingerprinting. I need annual precipitation (rainfall) data for provinces in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Specifically, I don't know what it is called but, I need the **single annual precipitation value** (in millimeters) for each province for the years 2018 or 2019 or later, just any year after 2016, or maybe average monthly rainfall data. A data that can differentiate and groups between provinces.
Could anyone kindly provide this data or guide me to reliable sources where I can obtain it? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Note: I actually also need temperature and humidity data, but it's a bonus.
Relevant answer
Thank you, but since I also need other countries, I'm afraid they will have different standard hence not good if not from one source.

We all know about Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama etc. I am looking for the names of similar individuals in Indian history. They were born in India, they then travelled abroad, and then they brought back knowledge of the wider world to courts in India, and became symbols of adventure.
I found Tokubei and other Japanese adventurers who went to Formosa and Siam, but the moment you mention samurais touring Asia, you are in a political minefield, and complicit in the Nanjing massacre.
So now I am looking for similar characters from India. I did find a person called Chand Sadagar who appears in some old texts. But I did not find the title of the original source. He was an extremely wealthy merchant in the middle ages, I understand?
Relevant answer
Answer
Raveendra Nath Yasarapu, I did find a traveler from ancient times from India, Bodhidharma, who brought his Buddhism to China.
He seems to be frequently mentioned in Chinese sources, but whether he then was mentioned in Indian sources, I do not know.

it is well known that the great impact of Hindu civilization on culture in Southeast Asia dates back over 3000 years. The Bujang valley civilization in the Kedah region of Malaysia has revealed a steel making and exporting culture at least 800 years before the Christian era. This whole region consisting of Thailand (Siam), Myanmar, Cambodia, south Viet Nam, Laos, Indonesia which reveals a past in which the local culture accepted Indian languages, religions, art, technology etc. so much so that even today many city and person names and many words in local languages are of Sanskrit origin. Now, it is also clear that China was equally near, equally or more advanced in all cultural and technological matters. Rulers of Southeast Asia were in close contact with China and somewhat apprehensive of its power. Why is the Chinese culture not as impactful as the Hindu culture in these countries?

Dear sir,
An electronic calculator developed by epidemiologists at Brock University has long been used effectively to predict lung cancer. But intelligent systems currently do not recognize many human diseases, so there are still many unsolved problems.
To carry out scientific research, outstanding specialists in electronic medicine are invited to the laboratory to analyze large amounts of data using intelligent systems. The main activity in the laboratory is the use of intelligent e-medicine systems for the analysis of large data sets in order to identify and cluster patients' diseases. The use of laboratory tools is free. Employees and the head of the laboratory do not receive a salary. Scientific research is carried out remotely without interruption from the main work. The results of scientific research will be published in popular scientific journals at the expense of grants received by laboratory staff. The results of the research are published in articles:

According to my PhD student (Rat), the framework species method of forest restoration adds around 156 tC/ha to above-ground tree biomass over 16 years. If the IPCC estimation for roots is added (x0.37), then the total tree carbon added is estimated at 214 tC/ha. This is for upland evergreen forest, northern Thailand, 1,300 m asl, 1,700 mm annual rainfall.
The current price of EUROPEAN EMISSION ALLOWANCES is 22.83 EUR per ton CO2.
That’s equivalent to 83.71 EUR per ton carbon or 92 US$. So, 214 t added carbon is worth 19,688 US$/ha. Total restoration costs are 1,700 – 4,000 US$ /ha (depending on the amount of natural regeneration present at the start). So conservatively, profit would be >15,000 US$/ha. Over 16 years, that averages out at 940 US$/ha/y.
According to our project partners in Krabi, families there are currently earning around 600 US$/ha/y from oil palm from year 7 to year 15 ,after plantation establishment. That’s 5,400 US$/ha over the 9 productive years of the plantation.
That makes forest restoration at least 50% more profitable than oil palm … just on the carbon value alone. If NTFP’s (the green supermarket) and a bit of ecotourism are thrown into the mix, then restoration becomes much more profitable than oil palm.
Can this be true? What am I missing here?
Relevant answer
Answer
Oil palm plantations can have a higher net productivity than some forests and store more soil carbon than other agricultural systems. After 20 years there can be over 40 tC/Ha. Shouldn't that be incorporated into the comparison?

I am going through a number of documents and papers on global and country-wise hilsa catch. As I can see 60-70% global hilsa catch come from Bangladesh. Having said that, different documents give different percentages. The countries like India, Myanmar, Thailand, Pakistan, Iran and a few others are also considered as hilsa nations. Is it possible to prepare a country-wise and year-wise hilsa catch data for all the hilsa nations, agreed by the scientists and supported by the authentic national data sources - that is non-existent at the moment.
Relevant answer
Answer
Sir, I guess there is no authentic estimation! Everything just measured through assumption. I have many confusion like why we stopped catching hilsha in different time like at this year October then earlier in August or July. Is there any scientific notes! We always said about migratory root but how they recruit through that channel and why they like that channel? I think that also another assumpted information. Still, we don't know why this root changed by Hilsha!! Only guess power and fixed matter are not liable for judgement for that. So, I think we need more specific about that issues.
Thanks sir.

I tend to reach out when I'm fairly clueless about something, this time no exception. Some background first though.
I research in Thailand and Australia, Thailand never being easy. Business managers tend not to be helpful. Why say yes and create risk, so possible loss of face (Thailand is a heavily face-based culture) when you can ignore or say "No"? Sometimes, though, the situation doesn't pan out that way at all. Currently, I have a number of business managers happy to help, saying "Yes". But there's an issue - it's low (green) season. There's a real paucity of clients at cookery schools for me to interview.
I sat reading cookery school reviews. One in particular had 169 reviews on Google. I kept seeing the words fun, funny and laugh. Over and over - suggesting people attend for fun. Equally I saw little comment around gaining cooking skills, very little. So, had I found my answer as to why people attend touristic cooking classes? Do I have to interview people at all? Why not just text-mine the reviews?
In fact, over the last day or two things have picked up, interviews nearly finished. But I'm still fascinated by text-mining, if only to capture a school's reviews for comparison against questionnaire responses.
My two questions are:
1. Do readers find text-mining a viable approach to inferentially discovering consumer motivations in the way I've said?
2. How acceptable do readers feel text-mining to be in academia, as opposed to marketing? I'm not sure I've even seen text-mining used, as referenced in an academic article. An exception is a Russian friend who is a big user, which might suggest that there are national differences on this?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Mark Azavedo,
Answers:
1. I think the answer will be yes. It is a viable approach.
2. Text mining is a popular tool for analysing unstructured texts. I have used it in my research. If you take my words, it is really useful, though it needs manual intervention.

Does anyone has a simple empirical formula to compute Daily effective Rainfall for any location in Thailand?
Thanks
Relevant answer
Hi Daniel,
Water in the root zone may be measured by sampling and oven-drying the soil before and after every shower of rain. The increase in soil moisture, plus evapotranspiration loss (ETa) from the time the rain starts until the soil is sampled, is the amount of effective rainfall. After heavy rainfall evapotranspiration can be assumed to be at the potential rate during the short period from cessation of rainfall until the sampling time. This can be taken as 0.4 to 0.8 times the evaporation value of the Class A Pan
ER = M2 - M1 + kp EoER = effective rainfall Eo = Class A Open Pan evaporation value M1 and M2 = moisture status in the effective root zone before and after rain, respectively kp = pan coefficient
The method takes into account the soil and the crop characteristics. The determination is simple and accurate but it may involve errors due to soil variation; the sampling errors may range from 5 to 40 percent. The method is also laborious and time consuming. The use of neutron probes reduces the drudgery of periodic soil sampling, but these are costly methods for routine purposes and also subject to sampling errors
Best Regards.

I would love to hear from different countries. In Thailand now the MoE Policy has promoted STEM/STEAM in classroom; however, these concepts are not really innovative since it has been used in many countries. One study said that they analysed scientific texts into 3 units ( words, structures, and nominalisation). I don't agree if this is a way to integrate STEM into English. Anyway I think there may be sth else innovative to promote English literacy of primary students. Hope to hear from you.

After talking about the subject, playing a match-up game, tabu, or ludo( i made our own ludo for writer and work matching) will help them to involve in the topic. Also, drama is one of the most effective ones because with the help of this way, children are not only reading or listening the story, but also they are given a chance to participate in the story

If it was theoretical or practical any insights you may have would be very appreciated please. I am need of this information for my research paper that is due on Wednesday thank you in advance.

I have been in the Military Defence Institute in Bangkok where I had some briefings about the actual situation either internal either in the borders.
Thailand is a key country for US control of the region and actually with the intentions of China expansion. It seems to me that will be a very big effort to have strong and modern Armed Forces without a full US help.

Answer
My research focuses on the Thai military's civil affairs projects only. I try to examine how the military trying to control politics through these projects. I not an expert on the weaponry aspect. Anyway, as of now, I don't see any attempt to reform the Thai armed forces in any aspect. In the future, if Thailand's democratization has a chance, the reform must be comprehensive, removing it from politics, strengthening civilian control, reducing the size but enabling its efficiency.

Dykstra (2002) says tropical native forests yield only about 30 m3/ha of timber, that is, about 10 trees/ha of many different species. And in parts of Africa it could be only about a tree per 10 ha. Compare that to temperate conifer forests which yield 500 m3/ha, so the costs of tropical forest exploitation (roads, skids, mapping, cutting of vines) amount to about 50 times more than in temperate forests. The Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) seems an oxymoron in the case of tropical native forests. In trials at Kalimantan concessions of Alas Kusuma Group (Suparma et al 2002), they found that it will be viable only if the regulators make it mandatory for the whole country, at a premium price for such timber. Currently, they get the work done through quantity based incentives with little supervision. RIL requires a total revamping of the system. My suggestion is that we apply a moratorium on road building and commercial logging in tropical native forests (allow only community-based, controlled, non-timber forest product exploitation) until such time air lifting of tropical timber becomes economically viable.

Going commercial can mean trying to ensure profitability and in most cases maximization of profits!. I don't believe that one can go commercial and still be ready to compromise the profit aspect based on ecological restoration and conservation of tropical forests. So commercial harvesting will definitely compromise ecological conditions of the tropical forests as Dykstra reports. However, it also depend on the products that are harvested, leaving apart timber which is definitely destructive! Fruits, mushrooms, medicinal plants, edible insects and all other edible and inedible plants that can be of economic importance to the communities and the market at large. These will as well depend on the sustainable harvesting levels.

So far, I could not find a single paired-watershed experimental stream flow data on a tropical native forest. FAO & CIFOR (2005) make generalized statements like “…Considerable quantities of rainfall (up to 35 per cent) are commonly intercepted by the canopies of tropical forests and evaporated back into the atmosphere without contributing to soil water reserves…” but they do not present data on native tropical forests. Pine and Eucalyptus forests tend to trap rainwater to the levels mentioned by FAO, but the common sense tells us that the same is not true for native forests. My suspicion is, given the high uncertainty in measuring stream discharge (up to 43% - Baldassare and Montanari (2009)), we may not be able to detect any watershed cover effects on the stream flow, even in the case of exotic trees, worse for native forests. When science is not capable of producing data, why can’t we accept the ‘common sense’ with humility, instead of labeling that as ‘popular myth’?

Answer
We have done some studies in India on this, but the comparison between exotic and native cover was not specifically studied, although new and non-native species were introduced in forest watersheds. Introduction of grass cover certainly improved the stream flow and reduced soil erosion substantially, especially in upper reaches of the watershed where structures are difficult to have.

I'm attempting a biodiversity inventory of numerous invertebrate species at two locations in the Indo-Pacific (Gulf of Thailand and Philippines), but I've not been able to find comprehensive ressources for the purpose of cowrie identification. Are there any papers or guides that might be available to assist in this? If not, what is the best way for me to accurately identify species we're finding? Thank you very much.

What time periods more precisely? Are you looking for archaeological data (e.g., faunal remains from recent work at Laang Spean; some geoarchaeology data; other sites have faunal data but most are Bronze Age to Angkorian); palynological data (some good work in Thailand; Dan Penny has done a considerable amount in Cambodia); geoarchaeological; etc.? Are you more interested in pre-modern H. sapiens climates? Also, are you interested in a large region or specific area such as the Cardamom Mountains, a specific river drainage, coastal areas, etc.?

This is a very interesting case of mimicry! The posterior end of the body simulates the head with antennae and eyes! The insect is a eurybrachid hemipteran (Hemiptera Eurybrachidae) resembling a coleopteran, and probably belonging to the genus Ancyra. Eurybrachidae are planthoppers. Common names: inverted planthopper, beetle planthopper...

Hello colleagues
Are there any studies on what drives diet changes in the case of urbanization? Meat and wheat (bread) are up in Dakar and Dar Es Salaam compared with rural areas, but what is the driver? Higher average income? Is the fact that bread is just bought from a shop (most of the time) and does not require any preparation (such as cooking) a factor? What is the situation outside of Africa, e.g. Thailand, India? Is there any reason to suspect that increasing urbanization rates in China (65% projected for China) will be accompanied by an increase of bread consumption?
