I would summarize one of the main situations as follows: proponents of a brain-centered approach struggle to integrate their constructs with those modeling the links between mental content and behavior, largely due to reasons described by phenomenologists (see the exchanges between Ricoeur and Changeux for a discussion, though it remains unresolved). For those advocating for models that attempt to articulate behavioral expression and mental content, the task becomes particularly challenging when it comes to conceptualizing deviations in brain functions in a way that could influence mental content and related behaviors.
What concerns me is that these disputes are becoming ideological, touching on feelings of belonging and professional identity, and often do not unfold peacefully. The situation is all the more worrying because the field of addiction studies suffers from a recurrent problem: There isn't enough clinical substance in these debates = there are not enough experienced clinicians and patients included in the theoretical and methodological development phases of the researchers. By experienced clinicians, I primarily refer to those who have faced the theoretical models taught in psychotherapy, recognized their limitations without becoming disheartened or disengaged, and remained flexible and compassionate professionals. I have met such people in my life—not thousands, but they exist! They have well-mastered psychotherapeutic training, sometimes more than one, but their thinking system is neither rigid nor overly defensive—they make wonderful interlocutors for researchers. Their professional memory is full of well-treated clinical cases whose inspirational value for researchers is considerable. And are there researchers open to interdisciplinary dialogue? They exist as well, even if the frustration with psychopathological models that struggle to provide tangible clinical results makes them somewhat defensive.
Honestly, I wonder what could facilitate a useful interdisciplinary discussion—not just a superficial conversation where viewpoints are politely expressed but without real concrete evolution, but a framework that reduces the risks to each person's ego and fosters the emergence of new ideas, all for the benefit of those with psychopathological difficulties. One approach could be to invite practitioners and researchers to share the questions that remain unanswered in their respective fields—focusing on what they don't know rather than what they do. The exchange would not initially be about sharing established knowledge but rather about discussing the thorny yet central questions. I am referring to the excellent article (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32231315/) written by leading neuroscientists, particularly Box 4, titled "Outstanding questions." In my view, this is a remarkable example of humility and intellectual honesty. Solutions do exist to initiate a genuine dialogue and demonstrate our ability to overcome divisions and conflicts.
In short, I am concerned about ideological stances that give ideas disproportionate weight compared to the data collected. For my part, the time is ripe for reflection, for taking the necessary step back to reconsider clinical and experimental matters we thought were settled—questions of diagnosis, treatment effectiveness, processes of change, and investigation methods. In sum, ideas that we thought were firmly established are being deconstructed, and now is a prime moment to think outside the box. What do you think?

But as brain and mind keep being the most complex matters in the known universe, we should not stop trying to progress using different perspectives.

In short, yes. The solution is to learn about the other culture and bee open minded. Even within the English speaking world, I know a guy who went from the US to Australia and argued with a waiter over the meaning of a word on the menu, not appreciating that the way they spoke English was different.
Meta-cognition is important here. You need to be aware of not only what you think but why you think that. Then you can have conversation with your counterpart (from another culture) and you can discuss not only what your solution is but the underlying assumptions that led you to that point.

Challenge faced worldwide: a new spread of Covid
We all have lived through Covid19, across the world. Prior to the availability of vaccines, Non-Pharmaceutic Interventions by health-aware governments were implemented, with significant success, well into a stage of lockdown, where residents of a country were asked and then required to stay at home, with stringent conditions to get out of their homes. The logistics of food supply was usually well managed, even if there were cases of people remaining isolated from food supply at times.
Anticipating the risk through propagation models
The key to not letting Covid-19 take its toll, and it actually did take its toll, especially among elderly residents of care homes, in Italy, France, the UK, etc, was to model in an anticipatory manner the spread of the disease and assess its risk realistically.
Macro-models available (statistics), but what about micro-level (few humans)?
Modelling was mostly at macro-level: cities, regions, countries. However the different context of human interaction in daily life received much less attention, although large data sets and use cases build on a number of elementary interactions, and smaller numbers of humans involved in each.
Elementary interactions of few humans
Our endeavour, which could not afford the ambition of health statisticians in larger teams, to model the spread of the disease at country level, focused instead then, in the years 2019-2020, onto elementary use cases of interaction, with few humans involved (few starting from 2). Such use cases covered elderly patients of care homes, and their interactions during joint meals in the care home meal area, with tables shared, it also covered households in close (and closed) interaction during lockdown. It also tried to make sense of large events, where many humans interact during a limited time (football game, women's day celebration, etc).
The typology of likely propagation in such use cases was modeled, and parameters of a simple but robust model were tuned to known data, and in turn simulations could be run, and such simulation could be assessed on other known outcomes (such as the observation of virus propagation among the citizen team running a polling center during elections in France).
Next steps: anticipating the wave coming, with micro-models?
Can we ask the researchgate community if anyone is interested to undertake similar micro-level models of elementary human interaction leading to a likely spread of the virus?
Could we consider building a federated collaborative project, with data fed by anyone having access to these (literature, publications, etc)?
What approach do you recommend? Have you published on the topic?

(information). It is believed that systems of the social and virtual worlds would be able to close any gaps and address any problems throughout the Society 5.0 timeframe. In order to actualize or prepare for era society 5.0 in the domain of education, students need to be able to think critically, constructively, and creatively, as well as having an appropriate understanding of their learning styles. Being intelligent and well-integrated with both the real and digital worlds, civilization 5.0 is a society. Salgues (2018) asserts that Society 5.0 has the following characteristics: (1) complete adoption of ICT; (2) community focus; (3) engagement of people; (4) shared ideals of sustainability, inclusiveness, effectiveness, and intellectual power; and (5) development of economic disruption. Higher education institutions are essential to sustainability. As a consequence of quality management systems or participation in voluntary initiatives, such as the Principles for Responsible Management Education, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly being asked to report how they promote and integrate sustainability. The preparation of future leaders who will assist the execution of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) takes place in large part in higher education institutions. Higher Education 4.0 is the term used to describe the change brought about by Industry 4.0 in higher education and instructional approaches (called an Education or Edu 4.0). The rising need for a more sustainable society has had a substantial influence on higher education, according to Marques et al. (2019). This field's academics, students, and politicians confront an increasing sustainability dilemma. Education is the driving force behind fostering sustainability, since it is a vital instrument for communication and the basis of the "sustainable attitude." This notion contends that "a systemic approach to knowledge, one which goes beyond technical knowledge and even understands the principles of a healthy environment and a functional community" is required.

Many of the STS articles which are out there do not follow a prescribed methodology, but rather follow methodological guidance related to whichever field the STS under study resides within. See articles by Frank Geels (2002, 2005, 2007, 2014) for examples. SSM articles, conversely DO follow the prescribed SSM methodology of Checkland (1981).
You could provide an interesting contribution by integrating the two lit streams into one coherent analysis structure.

  • I am trying to use the DSAS tool (version 5) for both ArcMap 10.4.1. and ArcMap 10.8 in Windows 10. I am able to output the transects, but when it comes to trying to calculate the statistic. I get an error message telling me to reference the DSAS_log (photo attached) (which does not provide a clear solution of what the error is). I wonder how to solve this problem? I have tried to re-create the baseline multiple times and am getting the same error for both two versions of ArcMap (10.4 &10.8). Knwoing that I followed the Guide and I am using (English US and mm/dd/yyyy format).

I had the same problem and solved it by working on preprocessing. My steps were: Digitize the shorelines (with a fixed zoom scale) and create a baseline on the mainland, you may have to create both on the mainland and on the water (depending on our region). You must use shapefiles in the same coordinate system, and must be based on meters (UTM). In the case of your shorelines had been digitalized in different shapefiles, use the "Merge" tool to join all shorelines in one shapefile. In ArcCatalog, click with the right bottom in the folder you want to put your geodatabase, so go to "New" and in "Personal Geodatabase". After that, with a double click in the archive just created, click with the right bottom in the space of it, and go to "Import" to put there two shapefiles, one with your shorelines and other with the baseline(s).
Some classes and their types are required, so you should check if your shapefiles have:
- Baseline:
--> User created: id (Long Integer)
--> Created by DSAS through Attribute Automator: SHAPE_Length (Double), DSAS_ID (Long Integer)
- Coast:
--> User created: id (Long Integer), Uncy (Double), Date_ (Text).
--> Created by DSAS via Attribute Automator: DSAS_date (text), DSAS_uncy (Double), DSAS_type (text)
I leave the uncertainty field (Uncy) empty and DSAS defaults to 10 meters in this case. After that, I used the DSAS video (https://www.usgs.gov/media/videos/introduction-dsas-v50-sample-data-workflow) as a guide.

Probably most of you know an author in systems thinking and management who´s name is "Russell L. Ackoff", he wrote many books about systems thinking and operational research. The last ones of them had many examples of how burocracies and somehow organizations helped create problems that had to be solved afterwards. Just to name one: "The Art of Problem Solving: Accompanied by Ackoff's Fables".
Unfortunately, many of this excepcional readings are from the 80´s or 90´s. The question is: ¿does anyone know of similar readings but more modern (let´s say Y2K on?. And linked to this: what books about problem solving in management would you recommend me and why?

I have applied initially the one-way ANOVA followed by TUKY and Kramer. May I ask you to verify if the method I used is appropriate for the data and advice?
I have 10 different transgenic arabidopsis lines (plants)  containing viral protein; hence I have 10 different Genetically modified plant lines. These 10 are compared to a standard plant that has not been GM, i.e., lacks the viral protein, companions between the different transgenic lines, and responses of each line at each of the concentrations.
  1. In the first experiment, these transgenic lines, including the standard, were treated with different concentrations of hormonal precursor, and seedlings length measurements were taken.
  2. In a second experiment, these transgenic lines, including the standard, were treated with different inhibitor concentrations, and seeds germination rates were taken.
Factors affecting the experiments

By design, your experiments have 2 factors: first is the genotypes, second is the concentrations (hormone or inhibitor), therefore, the optimal choice here is to do a two-way ANOVA analysis, followed by a post-hoc test like Tukey.
You can choose to do one-way ANOVA, but you'll lose any insight on which factor causing the differences. It would be equivalent to coding the treatments as A, B, etc. without knowing what treatment A or treatment B actually is - you can't separate your factors into levels because now they're all clumped up into one big "factor", and there's no way to tell the relationship between [ line 1 - 10 mg/l ] and [ line 2 - 20 mg/l ]. Your discussion would be very limited in that way.

This is an interesting question that has the potential to elicit a variety of responses depending on the disciplinary context of your inquiry. For example, an economist will likely have a different perspective on systems thinking than that of an evolutionary biologist, and yet the systems thinking model is useful for both academicians, and many others.
Generally speaking, the broad transdisciplinary understanding of systems thinking can be found in the work of the late Donella Meadows, a Harvard biophysicist who went on to apply systems thinking to environmental science and conservation at MIT. Her work is very accessible for the advanced undergraduate, I believe, from a variety of disciplines. The Limits to Growth (1972) and Thinking in Systems: A Primer (2008) are still very relevant.
Soft systems thinking would include qualitative visual modeling approaches which can provide information about the dynamics of a system. Soft analyses can be drawn (at a high level) with pen and paper, even for real-world systems such as a municipal waste system, a natural ecosystem, a population of arctic foxes, or the system of dairy milk production.
The soft systems thinking approach is a schematic representation, not unlike a flow chart, concerned with the dynamics of finite resources and the stocks and flows of those resources through the different nodes of the system. By drawing a schematic, one can analyze causal relationships that can create quite complex behavior, such as feedback loops, and vicious or virtuous cycles. One of the commonalities that all complex systems share its this: the system as a whole is more than the sum of its parts.
Hard systems thinking includes mathematical models that either approximate or describe the dynamical nature of a system. A good example of the difference between the soft and the hard approach can be found in meteorological models, such as the ones used by NOAA to track (and predict) severe weather systems, such as hurricanes. The weather map that you might see on the news is a (perhaps somewhat simplistic) yet accurate schematic of the weather system that produces a hurricane, and yet NOAA scientists are using more sophisticated mathematical tools to understand such a system as it evolves, and make useful predictions about the system's behavior.
The mathematical approach includes both dynamical (numerical) and statistical models. One dynamical model is the deceptively simple-looking logistic difference equation (Lorentz and Feller), which is actually quite useful across disciplines for understanding real-world dynamical systems that produce stunningly complex behavior, including chaos. [There is a seminal paper that you can read if you are interested in chaos: "Period Three Implies Chaos" (Yorke, et al).]
Hurricanes, as I mentioned above, are a great example of a system that can be modeled with relatively simple system of ordinary differential equations (Lorentz/Fetter), and yet such a system is still notoriously difficult to make predictions about, precisely. A meteorologist will rely on both soft and hard systems approaches to model and understand the path and intensity of a hurricane, and even with the enormous computing power available today, the extreme sensitivity to initial conditions makes it nearly impossible to make exact predictions after relatively few iterations.

Hello there!
We have done a literature review of three constructs. To keep things simple, I'll refer to them as A, B, and C.
Now, the literature supports the following relationships (please see the attached diagram):
  1. Construct A to B (Path 1)
  2. Construct B to C (Path 2), and
  3. Construct C to A (Path 3).
However, there is nothing in the literature that is a common thread to constructs A, B, and C.
Intuitively, I feel that there is a common underlying phenomenon that connects A, B, and C, however, I am not getting any support for this in the systems analysis literature.

1- Model View Controller (MVC) is a programming architecture that divides software into three separate parts. These sections include Model for database communication, View for creating a user interface to display and change database data, and Controller for processing user requests.
But DDD and MDD are software analysis and design methodologies, each of which looks at the issue from a different angle of view, and with tools, best practices, and designing patterns such as factory and repository, etc., it is impossible to solve it....
2- As mentioned, DDD and MDD are introduced during software analysis and design, the effect of which continues until the moment of application, but mvc is the architecture of programming layering(3 tier), which is in C# ASP .Net MVC
3- All three of these affect the architecture of the system. Therefore, the improvement of nature protection policy and biodiversity of natural ecosystems should also take place in the field of international cooperation.
Therefore, in developing countries, the goal of biodiversity protection should be to implement the principles of sustainable pro-ecological development in economic processes in the following years to a universal, aggregate, national and international level. The implementation of the principles of sustainable pro-ecological development should be carried out in accordance with the green economy philosophy and pro-ecological reforms should be financed from various sources, primarily from green finance and public finances of the state, and also the implementation of ecological innovations should finance enterprises whose production has a negative impact on the environment.

Any modern workflow tool will be able to route or manipulate instance metadata effectively. It then comes down to resources and budget. Low-code tools are not as technically efficient, but are quick and easy to implement.
Depending on your specific needs, workflow management (BPMs - Business Process Management suite) may be too large a footprint. Do you need

3. Integration with systems of record (SOR)

We use the ConceptBase system for analysing larger networks, e.g. enterprise models. Many queries rely on the transitive closure of some relations. If the graph has many loops (i.e. bi.directional transitive relations), then the DATALOG engine of ConceptBase gets to its knees.
Are there algorithms or heuristics known that deal specifically with this case? The DATALOG engine of ConceptBase does use tabling, i.e. it computes one fact only once. Still, graphs with many links pose a challenge.

Since ConceptBase has its own Datalog-neg engine (based on tabling), the background of my question is to improve the performance for large graphs. My (naive) idea is that connected components of a graph could be precomputed and then be collapsed to a single virtual node when computing the transitive closure: each outside connection of the virtual node applies to all members when using the transitive closure of a relation. The problem is that the computation of the connected component itself is costly.

There can be no doubt that systems thinking complements reductionism and that the world and our lives would be poorer without it. But, try as one might, systems thinking is not the be-all and end-all of approaches to problem solving because it:

It's better to use softwares which apply finite element analysis like Comsol mutiphysics or Abaqus. I guess machine learning approaches wouldn't help much in these events. If you use abaqus after designing and assigning properties you should define different loads using a table or amplitude and frequency under its tab. There are tutorials available for crack propagation using these softwares on Youtube.

I agree with others on this thread that requirements is where one normally starts when building a new system of any type. But it is more than that of course. What SDLC methodology you select for your project will influence the deliverables you and your team will need to prepare.

There is only one possible solution: You have to add an internal standard to quantify the remaining phases. But it's not possible if there is more than one unknown, because you can only provide information of the known crystalline structures. The rest is just unknown (could be 1...x phases, could be amorphous)
Although I am not 100% sure if you have to take into account that a possible high micro absorption contrast may also hamper your quantification.. ??!? Therefore a bit risky from my point of view...

I have done NBO analysis for the complex which has "Sn" atom by using Gaussian 09 at a pbe/3-21g level of theory. Because for Sn atom TZVP, 631G, DEF2-TZVP all basis sets are showing error (basis set is out of range). Anyone can suggest which basis set should I use for the NBO analysis for my complex. Or 3-21g is enough for the NBO results?

I recently successfully adopted the Def2SVP basis set for Sn in a series of organometallico compounds with G16. If you want to use a triple-zeta basis set, not included in G09, you can insert it at the end of your input file (GEN and PSEUDO=READ keywords, the latter for ECPs). BSs can be downloaded from the EMSL BS Exchange database (https://bse.pnl.gov/bse/portal), now including 97 BSs for Sn (and among them Def2 TZ and QZ are present, with or without polarization functions.)
An example of input file for Gaussian is as follows (Def2-TZVP BS + ECP):

There is a significant literature on the use of system dynamics modeling in analyzing complex systems and testing policies. John Sterman argues that it is only through modeling, validation, and calibration that one can comment on complex systems, whereas, Peter Senge believes that systems thinking, as far as coming up with causal loop diagrams, can actually improve understanding and insight for complex systems. I think it depends on your way of viewing systems thinking. I believe Systems Thinking is an unconscious mental paradigm, a way of looking at the world that fundamentally changes our understanding of complex systems. In this context, Systems thinking is much more than only drawing causal loop diagrams.

I am doing agent based modeling and was wondering, if I can have a model that does not specify a resource the agents use, but apply a density dependent function to decide how likely each individual is going to reproduce? So the probability of reproduction by each individual is determined by agent density around it. Or should I add in another parameter, which represents resource in the grid, which can be consumed and regenerate? But that will make my model so complicated and very slow to run.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am using python and it's basically follows selection-reproduction process, and I was using lotka-volterra function to control the reproduction probability of each agent. I realized right now I can have multiple agents on the same grid, which can be coded into one agent each grid. In that way, I may not need to add in the density dependent control for reproduction, since in high density areas the parents won't be lay offspring in occupied space.
The reason I am asking the question is in the book "individual-based modeling and ecology", it says the individual should not be able to sense the population density, so anything that contains a density-dependent controlling factor will not be considered as "agent based modeling", rather we can only code behavior of each individual and observe the emergent property on the population level.
For more details about the model, it is a 100*100 grid, starting with 100 each of two types of agents. Their fitness and reproduction probability are determined by a fluctuating environment parameter. They also mutate at each step. I am not sure if there would be a difference between competing for space or competing for some resource that can be consumed and generated in each grid. I feel the first one is more easily to run.

Hope students knew the concept about basics of software engineering before they start with SPM. In the beginning of course itself we can initiate project work to carry on SPM tools for real time problem. instruct them to write a case study by listing complete stuffs that provides planning insight then start working with tools. Plenty of open source tools available .
As Susanne mam mentioned more of virtual works is up in industry and certainly mainly tools have already built in feature of all the latest technology.
When providing with real time flavor , it will be interesting. Need to review it actively.
Towards end effective talk from industrial expert will add value to it.
