transgenic soil salinity resistant wheat cultivar
Relevant answer
Answer
1. Check existing literature for genes related to salinity, preferentially those related to salinity in wheat.
2. Identify which genes have already been used to generate transgenics and determine the success (or not) of each.
3. Identify target gene(s) of interest you will use.
4. Decide on vector construction methods and delivery. That is, determine which promoter and terminators to use. Do you want a constitutive promoter or inducible one? Which promoters are available to you? Where do you want the gene to express? Will the gene be expressed in the nucleus or chloroplast? How will you deliver the gene into the plant (Agrobacterium or Gene Gun)?
5. Identify and test transformation methods to generate transgenic plants? Use an existing or new protocol?
6. Generate transgenic plants. This will take a while, consider the length of time required.
7. Use literature to identify ways to screen salinity tolerance.
8. Develop and practice method for screening for salinity tolerance
9. Screen transgenic progeny
10. Evaluate project. Is the transgenic successful? What can be improved?

Hi,
I'm trying to build a study on a two neighbour city system, each city is implementing a different strategy for developing it's own Local Food System.
One has a Bottom-up approach and the other a Top-down. They share some producers and some people.
I'm trying to find case studies and literature about the subject.
Thanks.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Sergio,
Here attached are a couple of case study papers of mine that show the bottom-up attempt to establish a local food system. Also a good reference for you to consider is: Gliessman, S. R. 2015. Agroecology: Ecological Processes in Sustainable Agriculture. 3rd. Ed., An Arbor Press, Chelsea, MI.
The last section (VI): Bringing about a sustainable world food system (chapters 24, 25, 26) are (in my opinion) a "must read" with a lot of additional references that you may find of interest as well.

Hello all,
we are doing a pilot work that focuses on strategies to develop better skills of non verbal communication (PT students). One of our questions is whether somatic learning, through movement classes (and not frontal lectures or "cognitive learning") might facilitate higher sensitivity not only at "self" or personal level but at interpersonal level as well? Does higher self body-awareness contribute to higher interpersonal sensitivity or better ability to recognize non verbal cues ?
I will appreciate any comment or literature referral
Thanks in advance

What is the main reason behind the failing of new startups? Thanks
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Deepti. The main reasons why new start-ups cease trading are generally:
1. Because they do not have enough cash to maintain the business until it is generating sufficient revenues to cover costs (liquidity crisis)
2. Because the entrepreneur over-estimated their own ability (lack of entrepreneurial human capital)
3. Because they misjudged the size of market demand for their product or service (no market gap)
4. Poorly developed business plan
5. There is an imbalance between debt and equity (too much debt typically)
6. Competition is high and competitors react to the new business (for example price wars)
7. Because the entrepreneur gets a better job offer and closes the business
8. Because entrepreneurial income is risky and variable and often families prefer a lower, but more stable, income stream
Note that only 1/4 new start-ups that close do so because they are bankrupt or placed into liquidation (real failure). The majority 3/4 do so for personal reasons, or because running their own business did not meet their expectations.
Hope this helps? Cheers, Marc

I am interested in gaining a better understanding of how fashion and luxury firms leverage their extended network (e.g., strategic alliance partners) to build and sustain a competitive advantage in the market.
Relevant answer
Answer
Zara is one of the more studied fashion retailers. It is expanding while other specialty retailers struggle to get customers in stores. Traditional firms (such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, American Eagle, and Gap) have design teams creating products they think will be trending next year. But, a fashion miss will mean markdowns and lower profits. Zara's business model eliminates this risk: the company stocks very little and updates collections frequently, meaning, twice a week instead of once a year. The secret of Zara's success lies in the connection between stores, in-house designers, and factories. Twice a week, a store manager sends an order to Zara's headquarters: this draws from the sales data for the store but also from anecdotal evidence from shoppers (the larger network) about what they like or do not like. The commercial team will then compile the order—adding new products and balancing out demand with other stores—before sending that to the manufacturing hub. Within two days, the order will reach the requesting store. At the same time, the commercial team liaises with the in-house designers to identify sales trends and develop products that meet them. Business Model Innovation, available at http://www.adb.org/publications/business-model-innovation, covers most aspects of business models.

I need as many pros cons arguments. I saw several times this kind of approach by Romanian local authorities. I need opinions about this issue, to see the others point of view!
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Ada,
Pro
1. Issuing a local development strategy without the residents’ consultation is against the transparency principles (government decisions should be available for the residents not only at the stage of the final documents but at the stage of plans).
2. Residents will more likely support government’s decision when it’s their own decision too, when they took part in the discussion. But it works only when local governments took into consideration residents’ point of view. When government asks the opinion but does the opposite (as it could be the case in Russia) this system does not work.
Contra
Is difficult to receive people’s support for necessary but unpopular decision (which is often the case in transition economies). In that case, governments prefer to develop documents without consultation (they know in advance that residents would be against). But after the publication of the documents local authorities for sure should explain their position to the residents.
Regards,
Natalia

For instance, if you have a particular strategy developed for addressing an education research issue, would you refer to it as a "model" or a "strategy"?
Relevant answer
Answer
Strategy is A plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim. A theoretical model on the other hand gives an abstract description of a given system. Depending on the requirement a model may highlight one single aspect of the system and hide the other details. A model normally contains enough formalism such that it is not ambiguous. Because of this property theoretical experiments can be designed to estimate the performance of the system in different environments. Given a good theoretical model I believe the performance of a strategy can also be evaluated.

The last decades have witnessed the development and implementation of several early warning systems initiatives to help communities in the developing world reduce their vulnerability to extreme weather events and long-term climatic changes. These initiatives have been supported by governments, NGOs and international organizations. However, research has already shown that many of the root causes of vulnerability to these events are linked to complex socioeconomic, political and cultural aspects, entrenched in processes of marginalization, lack of resources, assets and power. So, in this sense, what are the limits of early warning systems and the risks of using them as major components of climate change adaptation strategies? Does anyone have literature to suggest on early warning systems and climate change adaptation in this context?
Relevant answer
Answer
Installation of an early warning system was one of short-term responses to Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for City of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. More can be found here http://www.fukuoka.unhabitat.org/programmes/ccci/pdf/CMB1_Sihanoukville-web.pdf
As I understand, it was not a major component, but was an affordable, relatively simple, early response to the report. This is in accordance with Risk Management theory and principles, you may wish to refer to the ISO standard and other literature on RM.
