It is a translation from English into Spanish by my student, Laura Gata González, and myself.
The first surname of Laura Gata González, i.e. "Gata" had been badly introduced by the editor of the scientific review, Hermeneus (afterwards it was corrected though), to the doi system and Crossref, actually as "Gato" (and not "Gata"). In consequence, it went to researchgate with its wrong spelling "Gato". How can I correct this?
Please, give me some indications on this.
I have already corrected the wrong spelling of my own surname, but I am not able to do the same with other authors' data.

The assimilation phenomena are the influences that a sound makes to another. We have the progressive assimilation when the preceding sound changes the characteristics of the following: [aθ't̪̟eka] the voiceless interdental fricative consonant interdentalized the voiceless dental oclusive consonant. In the other hand, the regressive assimilation takes place when the following sound influences to the preceding: [an̪dalu'θia] the voiced dental occlusive consonant dentalized the alveolar nasal, but here we have also the progressive assimilation because the alveolar nasal made the voiced dental occlusive consonant mantain its occlusion. Finally, the dissimilation is the process by which two sounds variate their characteristics in order to emphasise the difference between them: an example could be the evolution of the medieval Spanish sibilants.

If you find a typo or anything that can seem dubious, the convention is to follow the word /phrase with [sic].
I am not sure what you mean by 'bad' word? Is it s swear word or a taboo word or just a word that is badly spelt? Either way, there might be a reason for it appearing - indeed, criticising the author(s) for ill-chosen words might be a point of criticism (which could be raise in, say, a footnote).

I agree with most others that it is most commonly done in theses and journal articles to be third person but, as Olga Griswold says, sometimes first-person can be used - it is not strictly against the rules. It may make it sound more personal.

The phrase 'mulata toribia' refers specifically to Encarnación Ezcurra de Rosas, the wife of the notorious dictator, Juan Manuel de Rosas. It was used as an insult by her enemies, the Unitarians. 'Mulata' refers to her dark hair and skin but 'toribia' is not as easy to define. I have looked at some explanations suggesting that it means 'controlling', 'domineering', 'spiritually aware', 'intelligent' and 'determined', but I am unsure as to whether any of these translations are accurate. Doing research in multilingual contexts can be challenging, as many of you know. I do social science research in Spain, and occasionally come across terms that lack a direct translation between Spanish & English.

I think that the simplest way is just to ask them what their nationality is. During the data analysis, you can perform a Chi-squared test or t-test (depending on what is your dependent variable), and see if nationality correlated with the survey answers. A more complex option would be to think about hypothesized reasons for differences between nationalities. What are the cultural differences between those societies and add a relevant questionnaire that measure those aspects in your participants.

University institutions create a scenario where teaching is not committed with social transformation, but mainly with an aspiration towards elitism and the students´ contentment (students understood as “clientele”); research, on its turn, no longer seeks to meet the demands of our society (Sparkes, 2013). On the contrary, it follows the priorities set by foreign multinational companies (Berbegal-Mirabent & Ribeiro-Soriano, 2015). The quality and scientific value of the work is therefore defined by those companies that then lead an “impact culture” difficult to escape from.
Hence the challenges and difficulties that the Spanish university runs into whilst meeting the dynamic and interests of the markets (Berbegal-Mirabent & Ribeiro-Soriano, 2015), especially after its adaptation to the European Higher Education Area.
So, the question could be: Quality assessment systems for university teaching staff: a tool for improving the quality of the system, or an instrument for precariousness?

When trying to identify language proficiency for cognitive test administration (Spanish vs English) in a clinical trial, what is the best way to ask a participant (via survey) which language they want to be tested in?
A colleague suggested we use the standard way asked by the Dpt of Education in the followig order:
(a) "What language did you first learn?" and then
(b) "What language is spoken most frequently in your home?"
If responses do not coincide then they ask
(c) "If you were to take a test, in what language would you want to take it in to give your best performance?"
Being a native Spanish speaker, I believe we should first ask option c to reach our goal (cognitive testing). It seems to me that asking a and b first is not a personal choice. For example, many of us were raised in Spanish and speak Spanish at home with our parents, but our education was in English and we live immersed in English so we may respond better in English on a cognitive test than if given in Spanish.
What are your thoughts? Is there a scientifically proven approach to this? Thank you for your responses.

One of the most common methods is to submit the manuscript to an editorial (i.e. Springer, Elsevier, etc.). However, what if you want to publish a thesis in a book/chapter book or if you have a large study with an interesting/different approach? What would be the best alternative?

Because, you have been already awarded the degree which means the thesis as a whole has been approved. That should not be difficult at least now when the technology as advanced so much. You need to consult an expert for converting the thesis portion you wish to publish and go ahead with. Shouldn't be difficult at all. All the best.

We intend to take out the next issue of the Lahore Journal of Policy Studies on Covid-19. The novel Coronavirus has come as a major calamity out of the blue leading to a sudden economic halt across the world. There had been other pandemics earlier but the response was never so severe, widespread and universal. The Third World acted largely on the basis of scientific predictions and policies originating in Developed Countries without any policy based on locally grounded scientific/medical knowledge. With the high death rate reported from Italy and Spain followed in a couple of months by even higher deaths in US and UK the world was terrorized. The fast pace of statistics did not allow for a cool headed debate and reflection nor did people have any facts on which to develop some degree of understanding and make an opinion. Except for a few critical special publications, the media has been more interested in statistical reporting than any critical analyses. With the passage of time many riddles and paradoxes, have come to the fore and call for reflection. There is need to explore these riddles and paradoxes because many revelations are likely to come out of these. For instance,
· Why have there been far more deaths in the prosperous and highly developed countries of US and Britain than in the countries of the Third World
· Why have there been far more deaths in the urban areas which have more awareness and healthcare facilities compared to the backward rural areas
· Is the pandemic primarily a medical issue to be dealt with by doctors or a socioecological issue to be dealt with through political debate and policy
· What has been our experience of pandemics in the past. In India whether it was bubonic plague, Spanish flu or smallpox, in each instance the epidemic continued for many decades. What communities and what geographies were affected. What conditions brought the disease under control
· What was the role of vaccines in ending the pandemics
· What was the relation of poverty to the number of deaths and why? Was it because of hygiene or was it because of food and healthcare
· What is the relationship between our economic goals of productivity and development and the onset of disease
· Industrial agriculture including deforestation, monocultures, genetic selection and animal feed lots have greatly increased production. What is its relationship with the pandemics
· The growth of giant cities in the Third World has created new environment for the spread of disease. Why has this aspect not been highlighted in the coronavirus debate
· What is the role of globalization of commodity production, services and people in the generation and spread of pandemics
· Where has this virus come from? Has the frequency of deadly viruses like Ebola, MERS, SARS, Corona, H1N1 increased in the past few decades? Is there any common process of generation between them
· How has the pandemic changed the ecologies of work such as education, commerce, health, entertainment and hospitality
· The impact of the lockdowns on gender inequality
You may choose a topic or write generally about the impact and origin of the disease.

Spain is a country where immigration in recent decades has increased considerably. This is due to the territorial position of the country. It is not only due to this space, but also to the standard of living that we have in Spain compared to other countries.
I have to say that many Spanish citizens have found themselves in the situation of having to emigrate to other countries in search of economic and labor survival, so we can say that immigration to other countries is potentiated in the labor aspect.

Views on immigration vary here in the U.S. While the negative coverage during the Trump administration paints an anti-immigrant picture that can be misleading. Immigration views vary widely and the U.S. is almost too large to pinpoint a single unifying trend. There are factors that impact that view here. As an example, urban areas tend to be more pro-immigration while rural areas are anti-immigration. Political affiliation also has an impact. On the right in the Republican Party the view is anti-immigrant but in the middle of the political spectrum there are Republicans and moderate Democrats who support immigration on based on different scenarios. As you move to the left in the Democratic Party the trend becomes much more pro immigration. Socioeconomic status and race also heavily influence the debate. The debate generally comes down to 1) They are taking our jobs and resources--which is generally not true and 2)They are not like us--which in some ways is true. Right now, due to COVID19 and National Security issues there is a strong bias against China. In the past it has been Catholics, Muslims, Eastern-Europeans, and Hispanics. Even though some of these have diminished for certain groups, you can still find echoes of this past in how communities react to non-native populations.

The economic situation of most African countries is very precarious due to centuries of exploitation by their former colonizing countries, most of which are European, to the existence of governments with disastrous economic management and the benefit of the large transnationals and that have not sought to raise the standard of living of their citizens but to remain in power at all costs. To adequately attend to African immigrants who arrive irregularly on the Spanish coasts, the following measures, among others, must be implemented:
1- Have facilities with adequate conditions to attend to immigrants who arrive on the Spanish coasts, including the corresponding medical-sanitary facilities.
2- Offer the necessary legal advice so that immigrants can know their rights and obligations according to the Spanish legal system and decide what the next steps to take and their consequences.
3- Facilitate the return to their country to all those immigrants who do not comply with the legal requirements to stay in the country or if that is their wish once they know their rights and the current laws on immigration.
4- Immigrants who are accepted should be relocated to reception centers located in different regions to train them in learning the Spanish language, know the working conditions they would face, job availability according to their experience and technical-professional profession, characteristics of life in Spanish society, the main laws in force, among other issues that allow them to rejoin the labor and social life of the country in the most beneficial way possible.
5-Once they found a suitable job, the immigrants would leave the reception centers to start an independent life. Those who do not get it within a certain period will be given all the facilities for their return to their country of origin to have the necessary space to serve new immigrants who meet the legal requirements to stay in the country.
However, the most important help to reduce the number of African immigrants is to provide the resources to improve the living conditions in many African countries, create jobs, improve the medical and educational system, and achieve that goal.

Now the problem is that the 1st application I cannot get in touch with its author because I have no sample file & its help manual is limited
Second application has video tutorials but all in Spanish! Plus it also doesn't come with any sample files. Fortunately the application interface & PDF manual is in English

Overall, the Spanish Flu is likely to be deadliest epidemic in the history of world. Estimates are that 1-3% of the world’s population died from the Spanish Flu. So many younger people died in the US in 1918 that the average US life expectancy was reduced by 10 years.
It is not clear why the second wave of the virus was so much more lethal than the first. There is some speculation that there may have been a mild and deadly version of the virus, but this has not been definitively confirmed. In the ‘developed’ world, the mortality rate was generally believed to be about 2%. In other counties, the mortality rate has been estimated to have caused up 14% of a population (Fiji islands) to die.
Eventually, toward the end of 1918 the number of deaths caused by the virus began to decrease. This is believed to be because there were so many people that had already been infected and/or the virus may have mutated again to be less invasive to the lungs. It eventually ‘devolved’ to be part of the seasonal flu. There was never a vaccine developed for the Spanish Flu.

Researching the subject from Macau gives you two clues: (a) all newspapers, bulletin, books, including Bibles and other religious materials, were imported from Manila since at least 1720; (b) there was production of paper in the Philippines and it was a monopoly of the Tabacco Committee (Junta de Tabaco) since 1789.
Researching the French travelers in the Pacific that crossed Macao during the period that you are studying gives you this: La Pérouse expedition carried from France large quantities of paper from different colors and shapes, and bought paper in Manila in April 1787 prior to seafaring to the Pacific, Australia, and then disappeared in Vanikoro; Etienne Marchand world voyage, published in 1797, only refers paper loaded in the departure from France; no clues in the other French voyages to the Pacific.

I align myself with a number of the points already made here. However, the question of simplicity and superiority should not arise. No language is superior to another. The factors that make English tick are its history, the hegemony of America and Britain and its stronghold on science and technology as well as weapons of mass destruction, its powerful media, and the fact that the world being multilingual needs a global lingua franca. English is that lingua franca. However, English will not reign forever. Remember Sanskrit,
Latin, Greek, French in the Medieval period, etc. Global lingua franca come and go; so will English though it may take some time.

Hi all,
I am conducting oral history interviews in Spanish. From the interviews I have conducted so far, I have found transcribing them to be an impossibly slow process. Even with transcription software, it is taking me about an hour to transcribe 3 minutes of audio, not helped at all by the fact that Spanish is not my first language.
Can anybody recommend any audio transcription SOFTWARE which could help to transcribe my already-recorded audio files (interviews)? I say software because I have a budget to ask for software but not for paying somebody to transcribe. A few people have recommended Dragon (by Nuance).
Any help greatly appreciated.

, I used Dragon NaturallySpeaking. To be honest, it hasn't been great and it struggles to transcribe if there's any background noise. A colleague of mine found Trint to be very good but it's a website, rather than software and quite expensive. Unfortunately, I had to buy software because I needed a one-off purchase.

A Spanish study has cast doubt on the feasibility of herd immunity as a way of tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
The study of more than 60,000 people estimates that around just 5% of the Spanish population has developed antibodies, the medical journal the Lancet reported.
Herd immunity is achieved when enough people become infected with a virus to stop its spread.
Around 70% to 90% of a population needs to be immune to protect the uninfected.
The prevalence of Covid-19 antibodies was below 3% in coastal regions, but higher in areas of Spain with widespread outbreaks, the report said.
"Despite the high impact of Covid-19 in Spain, prevalence estimates remain low and are clearly insufficient to provide herd immunity," the study's authors said in the report.
"In this situation, social distance measures and efforts to identify and isolate new cases and their contacts are imperative for future epidemic control."
The study is thought to be the largest of its kind on the coronavirus in Europe.

I am a Ph.D. graduate student at Alliant International University. I am in the process of gathering data for my research study. I am attempting to understand the obstacles parents face when seeking services for their children diagnosed with autism. I am attempting to figure out which barriers parents currently face by Mexican-American and Caucasian families. The most prominent barriers are geographic location, immigration status, which has been linked to language, limited knowledge/awareness of ASD, anti-immigration laws and cultural beliefs. I am looking for Mexican American and Caucasian parents who have a child diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum between the ages of 3 and 17, who live in California. In the Romance languages, many syntactic contexts, especially in subordinate clauses, require a subjunctive mood on the verb, not leaving any romm for mood choice. In other contexts, however, there is a choice between subjunctive and indicative depending on the semantics a speaker may want to convey. I'm interested in research on the statistics of these two types. What is the percentage of syntactically triggered vs. modal subjunctive use in Spanish (or other Romance languages)? What are the percentages in the written language as opposed to spontaneous spoken discourse? Is there published research on this? On what criteria could such a statistical analysis be based, given that there is an important intermediate group of cases, where many speakers might already consider the subjunctive obligatory while others might still see some room for variation?

R0 represents the average number of susceptible individuals an infected person will transmit the disease to.
R0 = Attack rate x Contacts
Attack rate (the percent chance that a contact will get the disease).
If the R0 is < 1, a disease outbreak should wane over time, and if its >1, cases would continue to increase.
Seasonal flu has an R0 of around 1.5. The Spanish influenza of 1918-1919 had an R0 of 2. Chickenpox, a fairly infectious condition, has an R0 of around 5.
To predict the severity of a new disease, we need to look at both the basic reproduction number and the case fatality rate.
The case fatality rate of Spanish flu was reported to be as high as 10%.
Before treatment was available, HIV, with an R0 of around 6 globally, had a near 100% mortality rate. Smallpox, with an R0 of 5, had a mortality rate of 30% in the unvaccinated. Bubonic plague: R0 of 3, untreated mortality rate of 60%.
COVID-19
COVID-19 has R0 of 2.5 and a reported case fatality rate of around 2%.
Case fatality rate is defined as the number of fatal cases divided by the number of total cases.
In COVID-19, fatal cases have probably been assessed accurately; people who are that sick generally end up in hospitals. However, the number of total cases are probably being missed by huge margins, perhaps even an order of magnitude, as asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic people may not be getting tested. If this is the case, the case fatality rate would decrease as screening improves.
How to change the R0 number
One can do that by addressing the two elements inside it: the number of contacts an infected person has and the attack rate of the disease.
Limiting potential contacts can be achieved by means of isolation and quarantine.
Attack rate can reduce with the use of masks, handwashing, and vaccination, as and when a vaccine becomes available.
This depends on identifying cases, and it is still unclear as to whether transmission can occur in the asymptomatic period. The latent period is 5 days.

I have decided to use a quasi-experimental design with the independent variable being Flipped Classroom and the dependent one being grammatical competence (Spanish). I have planned to investigate the effectiveness of FC by comparing two classes (one class will be taught via FC, the other will be taught traditionally). Therefore I have a relatively small sample (40-50 students). I would like to perform a grammar test after the invention as well as observe the students' oral production and compare them.

In case of qualitative research I would find it acceptable since the alternative would be that the researcher cannot access the original data and it can be expected that information will get lost in translation. In case of quantitative survey, however, I see no problem in translating the questionnaire by a sufficiently qualified translator. However, here, too, care must be taken that the translation conveys the meaning of the questions correctly.

The last release of LiDAR data in Spain was a nice surprise for researchers, because they point clouds that were acquired under the National Plan had also NIR information. As a consequence, each point in the cloud has not only x, y and coordinates but also an specific value of NIR. I would like to know if your countries are doing the same, or at least are planning to incorporate the multispectral data capture at the same time the LiDAR one.

It looks like more and more LiDAR data sets include intensity from the laser return. Most LiDAR data sets have NIR intensity in the frequency of the LiDAR laser. Not all LiDAR data sets however recalibrate the intensity as a function of distance. That said a better correction to intensity would include angle of incidence and roughness of surface would give a better representation. Good question and would like to know what levels of intensity are available. Here is a paper/talk that may give better insight to NIR intensities:

Hi everyone! We are currently studying the learnability of the english resultative construction by spanish native speakers who learnt english as a foreign language. The resultative construction is of particular interest since it has no equivalent counterpart in spanish, unlike the depictive construction, which is present in both languages. Therefore, we aim to compare the speaker's comprehension of resultative and depictive english sentences, and to analyze the influence of variables such as english proficiency, age of exposure, frequency of use, immersion experience etc.
We have already conducted a pilot study where we assessed sentence comprehension by asking the subjects to choose the sentence that best described the item's meaning, in a multiple choice format. However, we were wondering what would be the best psycholinguistic experimental task to evaluate sentence comprehension. We noted that acceptability judgements of grammatical and ungrammatical sentences are widely used to study syntax structures. Therefore, I wanted to ask psycholinguistic researchers what would be best experimental paradigm to study the comprehension of these structures. In addition: would it be more appropiate to administer different tasks and then compare the results? And what would be the best tasks in that case?

If you are doing a contrastive research on linguistic transfer (English-Spanish), I would recommend typical translation tasks. You will definitely have a large percentage of interference errors, but it is the only (according to my experience) indicator of learnability of structures. I wouldn't go for any communicative-type tasks. Interesting reasearch!

Just by the time Arabs developed a new bright red colorant, surrounded with secrets and alchemy and different names: al-kermes or Kermes or Carmin or Vermillon or Cochineal, the insect. It gave the bright red silks of Granada, the world was dreaming about, like a magical reminding of the Roman's power. That much that after Catholic Conquest of Spain, it was the arabic kermes chosen as the Spanish royal color (that's why Joaquin Cortez didn't brought to Spain the cochineal insect from Mexico). Which approach is the more recommended approach in calculate EQ5D values for patients in different country in a normal study (no cost analysis or comparative study between countries)? I want to evaluate treatment effect on PRO of 2 treatments, which occurs in all participating centers.
A) Transform EQ5D response via one general value set (e.g. US population OR European population)
B) Transform each EQ5D response via country-specific value set (e.g. Spanish and Portuguese patients will use the Spanish value set, Japanese patients use the Japanese value set, German patients use the German value set and African patients use the Zimbabwe value set and so on...)

The answers to the EQ5D survey can be translated into health utility values (HUV). HUVs are the unit of Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY), which is the unit of measurement used in cost utility analyses. The accuracy of the EQ5D representing HUVs is entirely dependent on the population that the particular version of the survey was validated on. Hopefully that helps.

That toxic micro-alga is alarmingly developing in Western Mediterraneo and had been spotted in the bay of Napoles and the bay of Palma and erratic behaviour had been observed in merus fishes in Kabylia. This report from FAO in spanish evoques supercontainers boats washing their ballasts on high sea, that way bringing in the toxic micro-alga. There's only 3 entrances to Mediterraneo sea.
