Hello everyone,
I am currently working on a case involving Cardiovascular disease using FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction). I have an artery in an STL file. However, when I created a shell for the artery to represent the arterial wall in the mechanical simulation, it ended up consisting of multiple parts, making it difficult to select and to apply pressure on the surface.
Is there any way to merge the facets on the wall and the inlet into a single surface?
Thank you.

Hello,
I am currently working on a packed column model in SolidWorks. The column comprises a packing material consisting of numerous beads (or other packing types such as Raschig rings) initially positioned outside and above the column. To achieve a random packing configuration, I utilized SolidWorks Motion Study. By defining contacts between parts and enabling gravity forces, the beads descend and fill the column randomly, as depicted in the attached file (including the assembly, parts, and screenshots). Now, I aim to maintain the positions of these beads once I transition from the Motion Study tab to the Model tab. Does anyone have a solution for this?
Thank you.

Hello research community
I have been stuck in the process of simulating the deformation that would occur in the collision of two specific objects in a given scenario. But I have only obtained a result similar to what I am looking for when carrying out the fall impact simulation, and only considering one of the two objects.
Doing some research, I found that something similar to what I'm looking for can be achieved by doing a non-linear simulation of an assembly model, but I can't figure out how to display the result of deformation and motion animation (also, I doubt I'm setting up the simulation properly, since it is the first time that I use this function of the software)
Could someone explain to me the proper way to achieve what I'm looking for using this specific software?
Thanks
Relevant answer
Answer
Baruc Avilez To simulate the impact and deformation between two objects in SolidWorks, you can use the Nonlinear Dynamic simulation feature. Here are the general steps to follow:
Create a 3D model of the two objects that will collide. Make sure the models are properly assembled and constrained.
Go to the Simulation tab and select Nonlinear > Nonlinear Dynamic.
In the Nonlinear Dynamic Property Manager, define the type of analysis you want to perform, such as Explicit Dynamics or Drop Test.
Define the material properties of the objects, such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and density.
Define the contact between the objects by selecting the appropriate contact types, such as Bonded or No Separation.
Set up the boundary conditions and loads, such as gravity or an impact force.
Run the simulation.
After the simulation is complete, you can view the results in various ways, such as by creating animations of the deformation and motion, or by examining stress and strain plots.
Here are some tips for creating animations of the simulation results:
In the Results tab, select the deformation or motion plot that you want to animate.
Right-click on the plot and select Create Animation.
In the Animation PropertyManager, select the type of animation you want to create, such as a fly-through or a deformation animation.
Adjust the settings for the animation, such as the camera view, the speed, and the number of frames.
Click Play to preview the animation, and then save it as a video file.

How to design flow focusing point using solid work for micro fluidic device?
Relevant answer
Answer
1. Begin by creating a new sketch in Solidworks. Make sure to use the correct coordinate systems for your micro fluidic device.
2. Add in the points for the flow focusing area. To do this, you will need to determine where the center of the device is, where the inlet and outlet are, and how far apart they are.
3. Sketch out the shape of the flow focusing area. This can be done using lines or arcs, depending on the shape you want to achieve.
4. Once you have the shape, you will need to add in the features of the flow focusing area. This includes the curves and angles that will help to guide and direct the flow.
5. Finally, add any additional features such as holes or channels that will help to direct the flow.
6. Once you have all of your features in place, you can create a 3D model of your micro fluidic device. This will help you to visualize how the flow will move and how it will be affected by the features of the flow focusing area.

I am writing a paper for my university. I would like to compare the algorithms used in the above mentioned softwares to see why each software results in different topology optimized results.
As far as i know, SolidWorks uses Tosca
i would appreciate any help.
thank you and regards
Relevant answer
Answer
The topology optimization tool in SolidWorks uses the Tosca optimization algorithm, which is a topology optimization method based on the finite element method (FEM). Tosca uses an iterative process to optimize the topology of a design by sequentially removing and adding material in order to minimize the weight of the structure while satisfying design constraints.
Abaqus uses the SIMP (Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization) algorithm for topology optimization. SIMP is a method that uses an iterative process to optimize the distribution of material in a design by sequentially removing and adding material in order to minimize the weight of the structure while satisfying design constraints.
Ansys uses the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) algorithm for topology optimization. ESO is a method that uses an iterative process to optimize the topology of a design by sequentially removing and adding material in order to minimize the weight of the structure while satisfying design constraints. The ESO algorithm uses a genetic algorithm to search for the optimal topology, which is a heuristic optimization method inspired by the process of natural evolution.

Hello everyone,
I have been trying to simulate a 'simple' coil consisting of 4 connected springs with a thin circular (D=0.072mm) in Maxwell 3D. These four connected springs make a rectangle (top view) I have tried several attempts on modeling the coil in other CAD softwares and importing them into Ansys Electronics Desktop. Here is the list of attempts I made:
1- Modeling in Maxwell 3D and uniting the springs together to generate one single body - Result: current leaks to the air
2- Modeling in Solidworks and importing as .stp .stl .igs into EDT - Result: Cannot handle thin geometry (the coil will no longer have ciruclar geometry so cannot even apply a current to a terminal)
3- Modeling in NX and importing as .stp. .stl .igs into EDT - Same problem
Modeling one single spring and 2 of them connected to each other (attempt nr 1) did not give me error and 'Validation and Analyse all' was a success. But where I connected 3 or 4 of them, Ansys Electronic Desktop is giving me an error when 'Analyse all' is happening about current leak to the air which is not that straight forward to understand what's wrong, although the Validation goes well.
I also tried to model it in Design Modeler, it's interesting that first spring gets imported very well but the ones connected to it will have messed up geometry and at the end this one body geometry cannot be verified in Maxwell 3D (2 steps for simulation: Validation and Analyse all)
I would be extremely gladto be helped with this very problem and my main question is: does Ansys have hard time understanding and simulating such thin and fine geometry? is this the main reason? and eventually, what's the way out. I believe the main problem here is that I don't know what's exactly wrong. i.e. What does the current leak to the air mean? and where this current leak is taking place so I can modify my model. As a final comment, I tried both ways, open loop and closed loop.
Thanks, any comment is appreciated!
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello,
1-Make sure the current path is a closed loop.
2-Try to define a good mesh size depending on the size of the object.
3-Use the adaptive mesh generator in the static study then you can import it into your setup in other studies.
4-Try cleaning the geometry by removing very small elements and using rectangles instead of curvatures. For example, simplify a round wire to a rectangular cross-section to reduce the computation burden.

Research Engineers at the University of New Mexico (UNM) are teaming with UNM Biology scientists to study the performance, distribution and food potential of greenhouses (GH). The work, which is being funded by grants, includes a goal to develop a thermodynamic model that can be used to 1) model the energy performance of different GH designs in the same climate and 2) to model the performance of the same GH design in different climates. Such a model would be used to develop geographic potential of various greenhouse designs in the world along with the associated food production potential.
We are seeking other researches who are working on similar modeling efforts and might be interested in sharing information. We are leaning toward using TRNSYS because of its library of routines, but we are open to other approaches. e.g., Anthony Menicucci, Res Assoc Prof, UNM ME, thinks that Solid Works would also work for a simple model. Comments? Collaborators?

Hi all,
I have an assembly model that I have already meshed in a different software. When I open it in Mechanical APDL, each mesh element is recognised as a surface body, so I have 15000 surface bodies for what should be 1 body (see image attached).
In Solidworks, I have tried converting each part as a solid using "Convert to Solid".
In ANSYS Design Modeller, the bodies come up correctly as one solid. Some parts were split up into solids and surfaces, but I used "Tools > Form New Part" to combine them. Nevertheless, in Mechanical APDL they are still recognised as surface bodies from the mesh elements.
How can I get ANSYS Mechanical APDL to recognise each part as one solid?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,
I have an assembly parts that mated together. the bolt connector is defined to hold them together. There are 4 parts that been bolted together which is washer (solid element), Sleeve (shell element), Frame tube (shell element) and connector (solid element).the shell element is defined with thin and middle to surface offset.
the geometry itself already been validated using clearance verification and no gap between each of the mated parts.
local contact (no penetration) is defined for each part by surface to surface contact. the default setting of 10% gap to consider contact and 1% to stabilize the area if the gap remain unchanged. the global contact is set as default as bonded.
both end is defined as fixed which no translation and rotation.
bolt connector is defined with advance bolt series option since the assembly has more than 2 parts.
the issues that haunting me is
1) I am getting a unrealistic high stress at the sleeve(shell) and washer parts when using mixed mesh element. Also, the stress distribution at the sleeve and washer is not as expected. However, when all those parts is converted to solid elements the "Abnormal bolt pretension is detected" is disappeared. the results and stress distribution seems more realistic with solid element mesh compared to mixed mesh (solid and shell). Since the sleeve and frame tube is a circular with 4mm thickness , by theory it is more precise to treat these parts as shell. So I wanted to produce study with mixed mesh element.
after try a few options suggested on the internet I am still not able to solve this issue.

Hello. I'm working on my study in orthodontic department of dentistry.
I'm trying to figure it out how the stress distribution and tooth movement would be presented when wire is engaged in crowded teeth.
I'm going to use software for finite element method, such as ANSYS or Solidworks etc..
I've watched many videos but every simulation starts with a situation tha force is not applied at the first, and forces are applied after the simulation started.
But when the wire is engaged to the brackets of the teeth, forces are appied from the first which means wire is deformed already before the simulation starts.
Any idea about wire engageing in crowded teeth? I think it would be possible if i could simulate that wire passes through the holes of walls that is not located on the straight line.

Very interesting question. Extracting STL file from APDL is a bit tricky and difficult. You can use this macro to generate STL file which works with both TET and HEX mesh. I think you used HEX mesh right? A big thank goes to Eric Miller from PADT who wrote this awesome macro.
After you exported the STL file you can use the following method to calculate the volume of the STL geometry.
1. Open a new SpaceClaim geometry and then open your .STLfile.
2. Use shrinkwrap function located in cleanup set of Facets.
3. Select imported facets.
4. Click on preserve feature (You need to set the gap size to reasonably lowest possible value).
5. Then click on complete.
6. Now you can convert created shrinkwrap to solid.
7. After you transferred the STL to solid then you can measure the volume using the mass properties in inspect set of measure.
Hope this answer helps and please recommend if it worked for you.

There are 10 basic steps in ANSYS (APDL).
1- Creating the solid model geometry. (You can import your solid model)
2-Defending the element type(s) and material properties.
3- Meshing operation of the solid model geometry and creating the finite element model.
**These steps (1,2,3) are performed in the Preprocessor (PREP7).**
Next,
4- Appling loads and constraints.
5- Defining solution options.
6- Solving the problem.
……. These steps (4,5,6) are performed in the Solution processor (SOL)…..
After the solution is ready,
7- Plotting the results.
8- Viewing the results.
9- Exporting your results in one of the postprocessors (POST1 or POST26).
10- Comparing the results to first-order estimates, closed-form solutions, mathematical models, or experimental results to ensure that the output of the (ANSY) program is reasonable and as expected.

I've a question regarding the SimMechanics links module. I installed the link module of SimMechanics for Matlab 2017b successfully. Then I registered and linked the SimMechanics Link software as SolidWorks add-in. Now I have a model (the robot example model) in Solidworks which I want to export to SimMechanics. So I go to the add-in tool and press Export --> SimMechanics Generation.
My Solidworks have Simscape Multibody but only have Simscape Multibody!!!
So how can I see or active Simscape Multibody First generation in Solidworks?
(I took the following photo from an educational video)
Thanks so much. I am looking forward your answer.

Answer
I think you can just export the model in simscape, the joints and other setting should done in simscape. I dont know about exporting full model with constraints and joints from solidworks in simscape.

Allow me first to apologize in advance for the long post. I have tried to keep it right-to-the-point as possible!.
Objective
To simulate suspension of solid particles using CAD software/create a medium with a concentration of suspended particles in the air.
However, I would like to give everyone a heads up; I am of little to no experience with anything pertaining to CAD softwares - though I have started reading about and experimenting with it end of last year - and this marks my first attempt to include it in my ongoing research 🙏🏻
Proposition
A chamber of a particular shape – such as cubical, cylindrical or spherical… etc.
The shape is projected to have an air inlet (an opening connected to a fan) to blow a certain quantity (e.g., in kg) of solid particles (mixtures of diameters, if possible) positioned at the bottom of the chamber prior to investigation.
Questions
Is it possible to..
  • Set/create number of particles?
  • Set the diameter of particles (a specific range)?
  • Obtain particles’ statistical distribution in the chamber as air flow/inlet design and placement varies?
Tools that I have access to:
Ansys 2020 R2 (student version) and Solidworks 2018 (with flow simulation add-in).
I have taken the liberty of exploring various sources to get a hold of some drawing and simulation basics using the aforementioned CAD tools in addition to familiarizing myself with some terminologies.
However, I found myself drawn to solidworks more than any other program due to its simplicity and user-friendly GUI. Using solidworks and its flow simulation add-in, I have managed to draw basic shapes (such as a cylinder with an inlet pipe) and conducted some air flow simulations, but without validations.
Unfortunately, that’s the maximum I can achieve within a reasonable time and any further attempts to figure out the meaning/inclusions of additional parameters maybe time consuming. Therefore, I would appreciate any comments/feedbacks/guidance that could steer me in the right direction.
Looking forward to your kind replies :)
Stay safe 🙏🏻

Answer
Govindkumar Amaliar Thank you so much for the suggestion :) though I've thought of something similar, ultimately I believe it is a very inefficient method. Given that the particles are a variable in my experiments, it would be of convenience to find a built-in function to handle particle concentration variations rather than creating them manually.

Hi all,
I have 2 .stl files which are 2 organs of the inner ear. They are segmented from CT slices and exported separately as 2 .stl files.
Some parts of the 2 organs should be contacted physically and they should share the same surface in the following Finite element modeling. However, they are 2 separate stl files, and the 2 surfaces are crossing with each other at the boundary. Is there any way to merge them together with suitable software and method to let them share the same surface at the desired part?
The sketch is attached. The stl files are 3D surfaces, and the sketch is the cut plane of the model to illustrate our problems. Thank you very much.
Please see the mesh files below if it could make the question clear. Thanks a lot!

Answer
Hello Kumar,
After creating the local coordinate system, you have to activate it using the following command:
CSYS, KCN
where KCN corresponds to the ID of the local coordinate system.
Also, make sure you write "nsel,s" instead of "nsel,r" so that you can select the corresponding nodes all over again from the whole model, whereas when you use r, it reselects the nodes from the current set. I see that you are using do loop, which might mean that you move the location of the welding tool. Therefore, you have to select the nodes at each do loop from the whole model, not from your current selection.

I am getting different results for the same problem, using ANSYs and Solid Work Finite Element calculations, in the vibration modes package. The problem is a vibrating sphere in the quadrupole mode, using the same characteristics and dimensions, the final result is different by one percent. Is that normal? Some of these programs is more recomended for this problem?

I want to do mandibular stress analysis and have worked on simulations for Solidworks. but some researchers have advised me to use Ansys as it is dedicated to simulation.
Relevant answer
Answer
In general, ANSYS software is better for analysis of the complex situation with the professional users while SW is better for analysis of the simple situation with the beginner users, so your choice will depend on the work complexity degree. But, as mention in your question, I think ANSYS software would be a better option than SW because it has very powerful tools to solve the mandibular FEA analysis problems.

For my graduation project I am working with FEM analysis of bone. I have seen and read a lot of threads regarding this problem, but not yet found a proper solution. I have a stack of 2D images from a CT scan which I need to convert to a 3D model. Since this model is used for mechanical analysis, and not printing or visualization, I also need to obtain nodal density values for modulus calculation.
but it doesn't seem to present a conclusive solution.
I need a non-binary representation of each voxel, for representing material parameters.
I am running the FEM analysis in Abaqus
I have looked into Fiji and 3D slicer, but they don't seem to provide the tools I need.
I also have access to Matlab, Siemens Nx and Solidworks, if anyone should have any experience here.
This process has previously been performed at my institute using Mimics from Materialize, but that software is no longer available to me. And also, I'm going to do this job multiple times, so it wouldn't be feasible to have someone with a license to do it for me...
Is there anyone who have done this before and could share their experience?
Thanks!
Relevant answer
Answer
There is no standard perfect solution and there are several more threads here on RG discussing this problem.
I have used the following workflow:
create an STL surface mesh with 3dslicer or Fiji
Read this into autodesk meshmixer
Remesh there with a regular surface mesh, export it
Mesh the result with graphite (which internally uses tetgen)
But this is not a foolproof way and often fails, requiring you to fiddle around with the stl mesh (in meshmixer or meshlab or some other software).

Is there any way to plot airfoil shape in solid work without the coordinate file, I purchased a blade with an airfoil shape that i don't know the type of the profile. Is it possible to trace the shape of the airfoil form the picture and change it to the coordinate file?
Relevant answer
Answer
Well, the simplest would be to put the picture with the airfoil trace as a background, define some points on it, then connect it with a spline. That way you don't need a coordinates file. This, and any similar steps assume you can take a good picture of an airfoil section...
Also, there are tools, such as Webplotdigitizer, which I really like and used many times before for similar purpose and know it works well.
You can use an image as the background and then it will extract the coordinates after you set up what to look for. It is very simple to use. Or search the internet for any other curve digitizer solution.

I have model of a bone having open lattices,I want to find the youngs modulus of the lattice model nd also perform fatigue tests. How can this be done through software?
Relevant answer
Answer
You should feed the basic materials properties to the software. You can perform experimental tests or find them from literature. If you have them and you need to find the properties for the system you need to apply force and calculate the deformation. Use the deformation to calculate the strain and the force to calculate the stress. E=Stress/Strain. For fatigue you will need at least the sn curve for the basic materials.

I am actually working on a robot.
I have some issues simulating the arm of the robot. We are actually using shape memory wire to actuate the arm made of soft material like PDMS or ecoflex. And the SMA wire is inserted in the soft material and when the wire contracts and expands the arm moves.
I am trying to simulate this phenomenon in solidworks, but the sma wire comes out and moves and pdms material remains in the same place.
Can any please help, how to solve this issue?

Hi!
I have this model (shown in the photo), but as I generated it in another software (3-matic) and I exported it as a STL file into Abaqus. I later performed Mesh to Geometry and I was left with this model.
However, I want to apply loads in the inner surface (shown with the red arrow) but I cannot select it because the program doesn't recognise it as a surface. I tried generating an instance but still I cannot select the inner surface.
I also have the inner model as well, so I was also thinking on subtracting that from this one so that I am left with what I need. I do not know how to do this as well, I tried on SolidWorks but it does not read the model.
Any tips on how to solve this? Anything will do!!
Thanks so much!
Franka

Answer
there is an option in 3-Matic that you can create a separate surface form the whole of geometry. firstly you should mark the mentioned surface (your target surface), then just follow the attached picture.

I'm working on a drone-based project. I am trying to perform simulation on drone with worst case scenario. Is it possible to derive the maximum speed and turning angle of the drone at which it will loose it's stabilization at different wind speed and angles using simulation on Solidworks flow simulation or OpenFOAM?
Relevant answer
Answer
According to the geometry of the drone and the fluid properties (temperature, speed, density, etc etc) you can evaluate the drift force/turbulances as well as the fluid structure interaction.
After that, it would be possibile to create a model which evaluates if the drone has stability or not (combining the fluid forces and pressure drop with inertia of geometry of the drone)

I have created stator blades and rotor blades by using coordinates and used SolidWorks. However, I tried to create fluid volumes for those blades, to simulate in CFX and have not achieved yet. I need to generate the following kind of Fluid volume. I have tried Bladegen. But it doesn't facilitate blade creating from given coordinates. Hence, the fluid volume couldn't generate through it.
Could you please give me some insights on this?

Thanks all for your helpful answers. I have solved the problem. I followed steps in the following video. Then I could able to generate fluid domains relevant to my case of an axial gas turbine.
Summary of the process:
1) Create blade profiles in CAD software.
2) Import to ANSYS DesignModellar in the WorkBench and followed the video.
3) Then data transfer to the ANSYS TurboGrid in the WorkBench and create meshes.
4) Transfer the data to your prefered software CFX or FLUENT in the WorkBench.
