I have read several papers on change impact analysis and I understand they have validated their results generally based on True Positive (TP) and False Positive (FP) results. Furthermore they support their validation with Precision, Recall and F-measures as well. On the other hand there are some other articles that they use statistical results.
My question is that, I understand the TP and FP results, also the metrics. However, I couldn't understand the process how they obtain the TP and FP results from the open source projects. All I know is they use CVS and their repository. The problem that bugs me is, when you check out repository mostly it is free from bugs and even if there is change the impacted areas in the code are already fixed (changed). Therefore, working on real open source project does make any sense.
In other words, the question might be redirected as: How do we form or find the actual impacted set?
Any guide would be helpful?

I use thematic analysis for developing a thematic framework, which encompasses knowledge about software maintenance in a small software company. I have a case that one initial code, in combination with different sets of other codes, creates two themes. Since, several prominent researchers stress the importance of flexibility and creativity in qualitative research, I feel that this is acceptable decision.

I worked on a study about the implication of defensive programming over the reliability of software. The software in the study can be classified as being the software of critical application. We obtained very interesting results but I did not find, three years after the conclusion of the project, papers with a close relation to that subject. I observe no change in behavior if I switch using the default GCC 4.6.3 on Ubuntu. I don't know if my employers' IT department enabled any special configuration options when they built and installed GCC 4.5.3 on the RHEL5 system.
Applied Biosystems StepOne qPCR comes with its own software for template input and data output but this is only for PC. What Im looking for is a Mac-compatible alternative (Life Technologies doesn't have one). I have looked into a Parallels virtual machine solution but then I have to buy a Windows OS license, which I'm not too happy about since I will just use it for this thing only. Any suggestions?
