Abstract
The lubrication of external liquid flow with a bubbly mixture or gas layer has been the goal of engineers for many years, and this article presents the underlying principles and recent advances of this technology. It reviews the use of partial and super-cavities for drag reduction of axisymmetric moving objects within a liquid. Partial cavity flows can also be used to reduce the friction drag on the nominally two-dimensional portions of a horizontal surface, and the basic flow features of two-dimensional cavities are presented. Injection of gas can lead to the creation of a bubbly mixture near the flow surface that can significantly modify the flow within the turbulent boundary layer, and there have been significant advances in the understanding of the underlying physical process of drag reduction. Moreover, with sufficient gas flux, the bubbles flowing beneath a solid surface can coalesce to form a thin drag-reducing air layer. The current applications of these techniques to underwater vehicles and surface ships are discussed.

RNALater is your answer. They show that a sample can be left at RT for a week without degradation. I use it for samples from tumor microenvironments and work at RT the whole time.

I need to ship some RNA samples overseas for RNA-seq.
I saw a paper that compares lyophilized RNA and non-lyophilized RNA. Also, I found a protocol that dries RNA with lithum + ethanol and ships at RT.
Has anyone ever done it? Did it work?

You can store RNA at room temperature as an ethanol precipitate. If you have RNA in solution, take some known amount - say 10-20 ug- and add 1/10 vol. NaAcetate and 2.5 volumes ethanol. The precipitate is stable and can be mailed. Upon receiving, spin down in a microcentrifuge and resuspend the RNA pellet in a specific volume of dH2O or whatever buffer you need.

I am performing Grid refinement study for a Ship Resistance/ Propulsion simulation in Star CCM+
I created one coarse mesh, while keeping all the settings the same I just changed the base size by a factor of square root of 2. Prism layer parameters were set as % of base size.
I created 4 meshed but the values of Total Resistance vs No of cells did not become steady, meaning that still my results are dependent on the mesh density. (Snapshot is attached)
Am I am correct that this is due to the fact of variation in y+ across the meshes. Becasue if I am changing the base size then the paramters of the prism layers are also changing and then the y+ value. Hence the frictional resistance is changing and ultimately the Total resistance.
Can anyone guide me in this regard?
And what are the guidelines for Grid refinement study for a Ship Resistance/Propulsion simulation?

First of all, you need to make sure that the boundary layer does not change with the grid size. You can make some excel calculations to find the required boundary layer size first cell size and the number of boundary layers based on your target y+ value.
In Star-CCM+, you can set the boundary layer parameters independent of the base grid size. This is rather easy to do as well.
Finally, you can perform the grid refinement study. Generally, you can go with high CFL numbers for ship resistance calculations. Also, y+ could go as high as 500, due to the large scales one is using.

In fact, I think that the digital twin can be very helpful. For ship recycling, for example, you may want to collect a Full Material Declaration of your products, and then create "Material Declaration" documents based on ISO 30005 "Ship Recycling". You can use digital twins' data to avoid dangerous substances when engineering discrete articles for shipbuilding. In the end, recycling would create less challenges for ship dismantling in the end, hopefully. DXC as well as Tec4U or iPoint all host databases for chemical contents of materials for ship building.

I'm studying augmented reality as a tool on ship bridges for maritime operations. One variable I want to study is the perceived risk of introducing this technology in the work of ship bridge operators. What I want to know is whether operators think the new technology (AR) might increase the risk of certain problems in maritime operations. I looked around a bit but haven't found a satisfactory questionnaire for this. The Technology Acceptance Model Questionnaire and the System Usability Scale focus too much on usability. The Perceived Risks Questionnaire (Jacoby & Kaplan, 1972) is aimed at private customers.
Could you suggest standardized questionnaires I can use to study the perceived risk of introducing this new technology?

Hello everyone,
My name is Caner, and I'm a PhD student. I need help with the simulation aspect of my dissertation. Simply put, I need to model a ferry line. I've got the following information:
- Ferry specifications including power, speed, fuel capacity, fuel consumption in litres per nautical mile, passenger and car capacity, and more.
- Price of fuel per litre,
- Coordinates or distances of piers,
- Where ferries are moored,
- Timetables of all lines.
What I need to do first:
- Define piers and ferries,
- Setup lines between piers,
- Define timetables to those lines,
- Make each ferry pick up a line, depart from the pier as per the timetable,
- Go back to the starting positions after completing the schedule.
Second step:
- Set different schedules for weekdays and weekends,
- Define fuel capacity, fuel consumption and monitor fuel usage of each ferry,
Third step:
- Make a ferry go to refuel when fuel capacity reaches a certain threshold: e.g. if the fuel is less than 1 trips worth, alert another ferry to take over its next scheduled departure and go to refuel)
- Get a report of when and how much fuel the ferry got refuelled.
Fourth Step:
- Introduce passenger and cars to be carried for each trip as per a demand formula. Get a report about how many passengers transported.
Fifth Step:
-Remove fossil fuel ferries and introduce electric ferries to the same model.
-Add recharging ability to the piers.
-See the results and calculate the lowest required power and fuel (battery) capacity for the lowest yearly cost of operating electric ferries.
So far I've looked into FlexSim, Promodel, Process Simulator, PTV Vissim, Any Logic and a few other sim software I couldn't get to run properly. My problem is that it will take quite a long time for me to learn to code for each software and I don't have any time to waste.
Looking for suggestions on using which software and how to obtain each step.
All help is appreciated.
Note: At this point, I'm thinking about ship simulation games. Ship Simulator Extremes had great sea and weather simulation options. Is there a way that I could directly design the above scenarios on such a ship simulation game? Maybe that could bring more reliable results and easier configuration.

I am considering a particular vehicle model and going to assess the maintenance practices. There are two versions of it coming out from two different countries and I'm considering one version shipped out from one country. It is hard to get the total number of vehicles available in that particular model which in tern made the determining the population difficult. What would be the best method to determine the sample size for the survey.
When I consider 95% confidence level with a confidence interval of 5, the sample size can be found as 384. Is it the correct number? can I go for lesser number of sample?

Optimal sample size depends on your population size. It's 278 for a population of 1000 at those parameters or 370 for 10,000, etc. But survey sampling can still give you valuable answers without having a sample size that represents the general population, as long as it is at least 30. The central limit theorem (CLT) states that the distribution of sample means approximates a normal distribution as the sample size gets larger, regardless of the population's distribution. Sample sizes equal to or greater than 30 are often considered sufficient for the CLT to hold.

I am currently doing a shallow water simulation to predict the drag, sinkage and trim. I often get wave reflections from boundaries and especially from outlet. I have given one ship length for wave damping. I am using starccm for simulation. My outlet is 5L from aft of ship.

To control the wave reflection in shallow water is not straight forward especially in your case. In deep water and specifically in gravity-capillary waves I have used the damping term of short waves due to the viscous damping at the water surface which was adopted from Lamb (1945). Dear all,
I created mesh in Numeca Hexpress for Multiphase simulations of a ship (snapshot attached).
When I check the mesh quality, in this regard orthogonality in specific, the minimum orthogonality is 21.89 degrees. It shall be above 5 degrees for a good mesh. So considering this my mesh is good.
However, when I check the mesh quality with regard to Ansys Fluent, the minimum orthogonality is now 0.02678. As we know that for a good mesh in Fluent, orthogonality shall be above 0.1. So this mesh is not considered very good with regards to Fluent.
I used this mesh in Ansys Fluent and the solution was always diverging.
So my question is why the mesh has good quality in Hexpress but when I use it in Ansys Fluent, the mesh quality becomes very low?
Is there any compatibility issue with Hexpress and Fluent?

The difference is related to the solver, rather to the mesh generator. I therefor suggest you to use Numeca Fine-Marine solver, which is more flexible and robust instead of Fluent.

The verb part of the noun login, that is log has originated from the word logbook or the tool log-chip used while measuring ship speed in the past?
I'd say for sure, the former. A ship's log is a record, kept by the duty watch officer, of everything which occurred during his watch. A ship's speed log is something different. It was originally a piece of wood, with rope tied to it, knots tied in the rope at regular intervals, thrown over the side, to measure the speed of the ship through water. (Let the rope out, as the ship moves through the water. Count the knots pulled through, in a given time interval.)
Login, in computer language, is to sign on. As in, signing into the logbook.
I don't think that Wikipedia is a good source of information, but it comes the closest to answering your question, I think, in this case.
The terms [username/password] became common with the time sharing systems of the 1960s and Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) in the 1970s. Early home computers and personal computers did not generally require them until Windows NT, OS/2 and Linux in the 1990s.

Hi all,
I am using buccal swabs of seals as a sample source for microsats and mitochondrial sequencing. There is a few samples that were shipped stored in ethanol. , i.e. swab of the buccal area is placed in a 2mL tube containing 70-90% ethanol until extraction. I am using one of the DNA micro kits to extract DNA from the swabs. however, before extracting from the ones stored in ethanol, I just want to ensure I am processing those correctly. What would be the correct pre-step before starting the extraction as per kit instructions (as it is necessary to get rid of all ethanol prior to starting the extraction)?

The trial apparently worked. We just soaked the swab tip in 3 mL water in a 15 mL tube, vortexed it, then removed the tip. Sucked up the pellet (nice sized cell pellet) and pipetted it into a 1.5 mL tube. But, since there was too much water, centrifuged again and pipetted off the water. Used PureLink DNA extraction kit on the pellet. The PCR seemed to work. I say "seemed to" since we were amplifying a segment that is either 150 bp or, if it has a transposon in it, is 5000 bp. Saw plenty of the 150 inserts, but the ones that were supposed to have the 5000 showed nothing. Probably need to lengthen the 72ºC synthesis step.

Hello everybody,
For one of my Ph.D. research papers, I'm looking for statistical periodical (annual and monthly 2012-2020) datasets of port statistics: number of ships, average waiting time, type of ship, etc. The idea behind my research is to develop a correlation method for assessing shipping activity in port areas using satellite data at night. More than 600 medium and large ports were selected for this study. I will share with you some thoughts - perhaps it is possible to estimate the parameters of navigation in a near real-time mode (number of vessels, types, etc.) without using AIS data, radar data, etc.

Dear Colleagues,
I have recently ordered GaSb nanoparticles from a German supplier (Plasmachem). The Customer Support was indeed very friendly and rapidly shipped the small vial to us. Synchrotron X-ray data measurements demonstrated that the shipped material (measured 1 day after delivery) contained uniquely microflakes of elemental Sb. I fully understand that, in this field, reproducibility and stability issues are still to be understood, but I am forced to blame the "friendly" Customer Service which, upon reiterated complaints, does not even try to reply to my e-mails. Money has been cashed, and all the problems remain in customer's hands.
Have you ever experienced a similar problem? How did you eventually solved it?

Dear all. We need to sample insects, store them upon collection and ship them internationally. Sampled will later be processed for DNA extraction and NGS sequencing.
Keeping all this in mind, can anybody recommend the best method/buffer to store the sample? RNAlater? Ethanol 70 or 100%?
Methods that are acceptable for international courier shipping would be preferred, as we have already lost some sampled due to missing stamps or the like.

Hi Francesco, I have been shipping mosquitoes with different methods from collection sites to our lab where we extract DNA/RNA, that we send to the companies for WGS or RNA-seq.
We got the best extractions using DNA/RNA shield (ZymoTech) or a similar product. We homogenize the insect in a small volume of DNA/RNA shield with an electric pestle or better a tissue lyser and use a precipitation-based DNA extraction method (eg. Promega Wizard kit, DNAzol, Phenol-Chloroform...). You can also store the entire insect if you want and homogenize it later.
This method also inactivates any infectious material and protects the sample from heat, freezing-defreezing etc. so it is pretty "custom-friendly". We had samples at RT for weeks without degradation.
You can store the samples in 70% ethanol but there is a little loss of material in my opinion or (very complicated) ship it in dry ice.
If you're going to have the DNA extracted by the company just talk with them before choosing the conservation medium because in my experience (based on different companies in Italy, US and China) they use quick and standard extraction methods and they often do terrible extractions. So ask them if they can process the sample you would send them and remind them that it is a delicate sample and that it needs to be extracted in a "special" way, or they'll just treat as if it was a "classic" soft tissue sample.

Project Details :
The project involves the development of a novel navigational model and a DSS based on multi-criteria approach for providing support on e-navigation and collision / obstacle avoidance for operations including conventional and marine autonomous surface vessels (MASV). The developed system will be used for both improving the vessels propulsion system design and control as well as for ensuring safe navigation. The project commences with the investigation of the current and future propulsion plant alternatives for both vessels types and proceed to the selection of the ship types to be investigated along with their hull and propulsion system characteristics. Fidel models for adequately representing the investigated vessels subsystems/components as well as the ships control systems (engine and steering control) modelling will be developed. Based on these models, the identification of the propulsion system limitations will be carried out. The next project phase includes the integration of the developed models to form a vessel digital twin for representing the behaviour and response of the investigated vessels propulsion and manoeuvring. The uncertainty involved in the complete chain (sensors, models, conditions, actuators, course, decision made) will be thoroughly investigated and its influence on the proposed actions will be quantified. Appropriate risk metrics including the navigation practices, minimum distances as well as reliability and failures of the propulsion system and its components will be introduced for characterising the safety of the ship’s navigation. A number of counter scenarios including the number or the involved vessels (and their types), the navigation area details, the prevailing environmental conditions as well as  the quantified level of uncertainty and the human  response, will be evaluated for accessing the associated safety metrics and characterising the collision risk.  Based on the examined scenarios results, optimal control systems will be proposed and decision guidelines will be suggested. All the previous steps will allow the development of the novel structured DSS.

The export of such vessels may be questionable, as it may be likely to result in dismantling in facilities which lack the necessary guarantees. This is why several regulations must be observed when such ships are transboundary for recycling. In my opinion, COVID-19 will not have an impact on the recycling of ships after containment measures.

First of all, thank you for getting involved in the discussion of this fascinating question. I see your points very well in both of your responses. And I also see that somewhere we have a resonance, but let us further elaborate on it.
Having said that, I would like to emphasize that not the type of problem to be sold is interesting for me, but the view of the people on the opportunity of "solving" (whatever it means) not fully deterministic (or non-deterministic) problems (whatever it means). At the time of posing the question I though of systelligence (partly implanted, partly acquired system intelligence) that makes smart-cyber-physical systems capable to achieve their working/operational/servicing objectives. Systeligence is a different genre for me, than AGI or ASI. Where we resonate is what is hiding behind your fist answer, but also partly behind the second one. Namely, current effort of AI research (as well as of cognitive engineering) is to reproduce some pattern manipulation capability of the human brain (or better to say, the human mind). The argumentation behind is simple - cognitive or whatever patterns can almost always be found. This applies independent of the fact if a pattern is strong or weak (like our mental models), or if it is concrete (as the mind images generated by sensing) or implicate (as generated by abstraction or illusion). It is also not making a big difference if the pattern is intended or not. Cognitive scientist have proven that our brain/mind tend to look for patterns in what we encounter. It uses some preferred patterns to recognize, describe, explain, predict or control some related phenomenon, as well as to create associations. This is a kind of innate of how we think, and the current trend, as I noted above, to carry it over to artificial constructs.
Coming back to my initial question, the issue is that how much we can reconstruct it and, more importantly, will AI be able to step over what has been identified as limitation for human being. I am doubtful, but open for any discourse. Why I am doubtful, or even sceptic? Easy to explain. In the simplest for it is about how to resolve the so-called multi-pattern-match situation. In both of the examples I mentioned this is what we are facing. There is no one concrete (ultimate) solution, and to get to any meaningful solution we need strong abstraction. In these and similar quizzes, deduction, induction, retrospection, or resembling other formal reasoning strategies (including probability or statistical significance will not work. Obviously, a computer system can use abduction, and may find the most probable answers, it however does not mean that it will be the absolute one. Furthermore, if the need for multi-step abstraction is present, then I guess we really have to reconsider everything. Some tasks or questions, like this presented ones, imply multiple, alternative, (undecidedly) equal solutions and answers, respectively. For the computer the issue is: (i) to find the relevant patters, (ii) to select the most relevant patterns in the context, (iii) rank the most patterns based on criteria other than just relevance (other semantics, constraints, intuition), and (iv) if it fails, do not hesitate to refer to Gödel's theory of undecidable.
So coming back to the original question: If there are undecidable logical (or whatever) problems for humans, what is the basis to assume that these problems will not be out there for (any kind of) artificial intelligence-enabled artificial cognitive systems as intractable?

Having said that, there are a number of companies providing systems that aim to improve the efficiency of the on board electrical consumers which includes power factor correction, soft starting, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) for pumps to improve operational efficiencies etc. When it comes to calculating these potential savings, it is highly dependent on the scale of the hotel load on board the vessel, and is calculated on a ship by ship basis from recorded usage data to determine if there is a business case. Estimates of these savings can be obtained from case studies by such companies (e.g. DESMI Optisave).

Hello, I am a captain lecturer and I have experiance on container ships. Container ships are different from others because of cargo operations. It can be loading and discharging at the same time. Sometimes some bays (longitudal loading area) remains emty or minimum loaded. That cause maximum longitudal stress. If calculations are wrong ship can ben broken in two parts. Soundings in ports are usually low. Navigating in shallow waters cause more vibration on ships. Ships longitudal stress combining vibration in shallow waters, this issue should be examined carefully.

Dear , it is important to note that your concerned question actually encompasses a lot of sub-questions including design for “Adaptability”, “flexibility”, “reconfigurability”, “reliability/robustness”, and so forth. In addition, “propagation of change into the system due to change of one or more component(s) of the system under study.
