I'd also add to this - strong passion for one's work and the ability to communicate content extemporaneously, as this ensures the ability to "answer questions on the fly" if they are asked.
This also can make for a better "flow" of ideas, as the student is able to move through their research in not just a "logical" flow, but also an "emotional/emobodied" flow as well.
Just a thought. Take it or leave it!

Hi, I have a major issue to discuss. There are two undergrads who are keeping our incubator open for many minutes because they are very slow in retrieving and putting back their plate. I am worried that this will lead to increased variability in my cell culture experiment. This is a serious question. I was wondering if anyone else also has slow undergrads and what the best way to deal with them is?
I was thinking about either buying a new Co2 incubator and putting a no "undergrad" sign on it or having a seminar on how to open and close Co2 incubators in timely fashion!
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, the global landscape had had enough impacts on the economic, political and security effects on the world. Taking Africa as a case study, to be precise Ghana, due to international relations with some of the western countries, the way and manner the country should be governed is going the otherwise. This has impacted the Ghanaian economy and hindering it from thriving forward.

Some more information from your side would be helpful Foukai Saixi !
The core issues of international relations among major powers are shaped by a complex interplay of rivalry, cooperation, and competition in a rapidly changing global landscape. Navigating these challenges requires diplomacy, multilateral engagement, and a willingness to adapt to emerging realities:
The competition between major powers, notably the United States and China, is a central feature of contemporary international relations. This rivalry manifests in trade disputes, military posturing, technology competition, and influence over international norms and institutions.
Russia's resurgence as a challenger to Western hegemony, particularly illustrated by its actions in Ukraine, has further complicated this landscape.
While global supply chains and economic interdependence are essential for growth, concerns over national security have led to a reassessment of reliance on foreign powers, particularly in critical sectors like technology and energy.
The tension between free trade and protectionism is increasingly relevant as countries seek to safeguard their economic interests against perceived threats.
Ongoing regional conflicts (e.g., in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Indo-Pacific) often see major powers engaging in proxy wars, which can escalate tensions and complicate diplomatic relations.
The response to these conflicts can reveal the fragility of alliances and the challenges of forming consistent policies among allies.
Technological rivalry, particularly in AI, 5G, and cybersecurity, poses new challenges for international relations. Issues of espionage, intellectual property theft, and digital sovereignty are critical concerns.
Countries are increasingly recognizing that technological dominance equates to geopolitical power!
The promotion of human rights and democratic values often clashes with state sovereignty and cultural relativism. Major powers must navigate their foreign policy decisions while facing domestic and international criticisms regarding human rights records.
Authoritarian regimes are increasingly influencing global norms around governance and human rights, challenging the post WW2 international order.
________
Analyzing the core issues of international relations among major powers involves addressing a myriad of complex factors that shape global systems dynamics, but certain behavioral process patterns seem to dominate.
In this sense, we are dealing with social (society) systems learning, in terms of human systems evolution:
Mikhail Tugan-Baranovsky and Nikolai Kondratiev opined that social systems are human-made, i.e. the historical shaping is a social learning process open to the application of free thought and will, the ‘death’ of any social systems order is not seen as a natural ‘death’, but as a result of human (inter-) action, depending on shared insight, foresight and practical intelligence.

Dear colleagues,
I am reaching out to seek your guidance. I have recently finalized an article containing an empirical study focusing on the unique challenges faced by Ukrainian psychologists during the initial days of the war. Could you kindly recommend any journals that might be interested in publishing my work?
Attached is an abstract of the article for your reference.
Warm regards,
Anastasiia Kuntsevska
"Amidst the Storm: Ukrainian Psychologists' Early War Experiences" explores the multifaceted challenges faced by psychologists providing crisis care in Ukraine during the initial stages of the conflict. Through a comprehensive theoretical framework, this study investigates five key components: Unique Crisis Situation, Providing Help Despite Own Needs, Pro-Bono Assistance (Volunteering), Vicarious Trauma, and Learning During the War.
The research reveals the profound impact of the war on Ukrainian psychologists, who found themselves navigating unprecedented levels of trauma and stress. Psychologists reported high levels of apathy, trauma symptoms mirroring those of their clients, and difficulties in maintaining regular sleep patterns. Furthermore, engagement in pro bono assistance heightened emotional involvement and shared life difficulties with clients, while also posing challenges in managing their own well-being.
Despite these challenges, psychologists demonstrated remarkable resilience and dedication, adapting their approaches to meet the urgent needs of those affected by the conflict. The study emphasizes the importance of specialized training and resources to support psychologists in their vital role during times of crisis. Online seminars emerged as a valuable source of support, providing practical guidance and fostering professional growth.

Audiences who attend a lecture can be divided into three types: (1) those who are totally disengaged since they are preoccupied with their laptops, iPhones, and so on; (2) those who must write everything down to put all details of the lecture to memory; and (3) those who absorb the details effortlessly without any note taking. Type 1 necessitates no discussion. For Type 2, once the declarative information is transferred to the neocortex via the hippocampus there is no stored information present to merge existent information with the new information, namely, the listener is lacking in knowledge. Type 3 recalls the key contents of the lecture instantly. This individual has sufficient knowledge within the neocortex upon which the declarative information from the lecture can be merged. Type 3 individuals ask the best questions since they have a high-level of consciousness as it relates to the seminar topic.
Einstein was good at physics, Kasparov was good at chess, and Pelé was good at football. For these individuals, consciousness as mediated by the neocortex was configured according to their mission in life. The consciousness possessed by different individuals is so varied that making a new acquaintance is an exploration into the unknown. To quote Forrest Gump (Fig. 1): “Mamma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” And this certainly applies to the quality of consciousness contained within different individuals.

So, if you are a young student, you will need to get to work on your acquisition of knowledge: continuous doing and reading is all there is, the fruits of which may or may not be realized for this depends on some genetics….but everything you do in life is a crap-shoot (to quote the late Prof. Peter H Schiller) including the genetics and you only find out about your talents by trying:
Von Neumann's closest friend in the United States was the mathematician Stanisław Ulam.[75] Von Neumann believed that much of his mathematical thought occurred intuitively; he would often go to sleep with a problem unsolved and know the answer upon waking up.[62] Ulam noted that von Neumann's way of thinking might not be visual, but more aural.[76]

By Trialogue, I mean Trialogue events like the Psychosis Seminar or the Borderline Trialogue in the field of social psychiatry.
How would you theoretically underpin the Trialogue? Which theories would you use?
And specifically, from the perspective of Clinical Social Work: with which theories would you connect the Trialogue?
Thanks a lot!
Relevant answer
Answer
The Trialogue approach in social psychiatry can be theoretically underpinned by various theories that emphasize community engagement, empowerment, and collaborative learning. Social constructionism, participatory action research, and recovery-oriented models are relevant frameworks.
In Clinical Social Work, connect the Trialogue to ecological systems theory, emphasizing the interplay between individuals, communities, and institutions. Incorporate strengths-based perspectives and person-in-environment theories to enhance understanding and intervention.

Question
1 answer
I am planning to impute missing data in various variables, and am currently planning my imputation model. I wonder which auxiliary variables, besides the variables of the analysis model, I should include in the imputation model.
I have read that auxiliary variables should be correlated with missing variables (recommendation is r > 0.4) (https://stats.idre.ucla.edu/stata/seminars/mi_in_stata_pt1_new/), but if I understand Stef va Buuren correctly, multicollinearity could also be a problem.
"For datasets containing hundreds or thousands of variables, using all predictors may not be feasible (because of multicollinearity and computational problems) to include all these variables. It is also not necessary. In my experience, the increase in explained variance in linear regression is typically negligible after the best, say, 15 variables have been included."(https://stefvanbuuren.name/fimd/sec-modelform.html)
How strongly should the variables in the imputation model correlate at most with the missing variables and other auxiliary variables? And how do I generally find suitable auxiliary variables for my imputation model?
Relevant answer
Answer
I hope this answer is still useful, even if it comes late.
Generally, MICE requires variables "X" that explain missingness in your "to be imputed" target variable "Y" to be related, e.g. correlated. Multicollinearity generally refers to the correlation between your covariates "X_1,..,X_p" that you use to build a model for imputation of Y.
Usually, finding enough variables is hard in itself, a problem that is normally reversed in larger datasets with more variables - here the problem usually lies in the choice of a subset of the variables. MICE Doesnt like Multicollinearity because of computational reasons, that is, that your conditioning Matrix X'X might be non-identifyiable if variables are linear transformation of eachother. To answer a part of your question: Collinearity is not in itself a problem of feasability of MI, rather a compuational problem that should be checked for when assessing convergence and plausibility of your imputed data.
There are various recommendations to choose auxiliary variables, a rule of thumb by Graham ( J. W. Graham, Missing data: Analysis and Design. New York, NY: Springer, 2012) is to set the cutoff at 0.4. This very much depends on your data realisations, other methods include data-driven variable selection, theoretical founding and the general recommendation to include all the variables that will end um in your analysis model. Whether to include auxiliary variables on top of the analysis variables also depends on the information they contribute - too many might carry the risk of bias, as shown by Hardt et al. ( )
Choose auxiliary variables based on theoretical grounding, a reasonable correlational cutoff, perhaps some form of variable selection and the available cases that they deliver. You can also use In/Outflux measures and their averages over missingness-pairs.

The history of insects is a remarkable tale of adaptation and evolution spanning hundreds of millions of years. Insects belong to the phylum Arthropoda and emerged during the Cambrian period over 500 million years ago as part of the broader arthropod group. True insects evolved around 385 million years ago during the Devonian period, originating from crustacean-like ancestors.
One of the most significant developments in insect history was the evolution of wings, with the first winged insects appearing approximately 350 million years ago. This innovation allowed for increased mobility and dispersal. Insects rapidly diversified, giving rise to various orders and species adapted to a wide range of ecological niches, from beetles to ants to butterflies.
Insects have not only adapted to their surroundings but have played a crucial role in shaping the world around them. They have co-evolved with plants, acting as both pollinators and herbivores, influencing the evolution of plant species. Throughout their long history, insects have experienced mass extinction events but have managed to endure and adapt.
Insects have had a profound impact on human history, serving as both pests and beneficial organisms. Some have been vectors for diseases, while others have provided essential ecosystem services like pollination. Today, insects are incredibly diverse, with over one million described species, and they inhabit virtually every habitat on Earth, showcasing their resilience and adaptability. The history of insects is a testament to their enduring presence and influence in the natural world.

Starting something new from bottom up is really difficult at the University of Hamburg. Only top-down approaches are successful for researchers who are already working in their field defined as "new" long time before.
I am working as a graduate student to introduce Neurophilosophy in the domain of Philosophy and I need some help because this new approach and my efforts are always excluded and neglected.
It is not a question of financial support but a question of cooperation in the academic field and as well in the bureaucratic practice of all those who think they are exclusively representing the university as a whole (but are "dafür nicht zuständig").
Any way, why should lecturers, teachers and other university members support something new when it is much easier to follow their conventional paths?
Therefore, at the University of Hamburg there should be the space for innovative work
(e.g. "Innovationskollegs") and the duty for more scientific cooperation.
Up to now, this creative space and this duty and will for cooperation does'nt exist.

You address in fact two questions, Ralph: (i) How to introduce a new field (in German academics); and (ii) how to structure Neuro-Philosophy.
Regarding (i): German academics (the Humboldtian system) is notoriously deficient, and few scholars seem to see this. Germany was once the number one in science, but it lost that position even before WWII. Now, almost 80 years after WWII, German academics is still deficient. This is due to an unwillingness to properly reform higher education (all countries belonging to the Humboldtian system are affected by this). See in this respect the works of the eminent sociologist of higher education, Joseph Ben-David (or my summaries).
Ben-David argued that new fields develop at the intersection of old fields, and that these new fields develop in formerly uncharted territory. Uncharted territories can be found in institutions that are willing to expand internally: the institutional setup must allow this. Unfortunately, Humboldtian universities are not institutions that would allow this easily: they have (now) bad faculty-student rations and, hence, are much too hierarchic. Faculty do not want to change the system because this would, they think, reduce their prestige.
Go to an institution with a more enlightened intellectual setup (a good British or US institution, primarily).
Regarding (ii): The answer to this is dependent to the answer of (i). In Zurich, an inter-institutional institute was formed perhaps three decades ago, the Institute of Neuro-Informatics, to initially great hopes. But again, the hopes remained unfulfilled to some extent.

The definition of elderly as 74+ years old refers to individuals who have reached an advanced age and are typically experiencing physical and cognitive changes associated with aging. This age threshold is commonly used by researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to delineate the older adult population from younger age groups. However, it is important to note that chronological age does not necessarily correspond to functional ability or health status, and there is significant individual variability in the aging process. Therefore, assessments of health and functional status should be conducted on a case-by-case basis rather than relying solely on age as a determinant.

Hi everyone!
I'm a senior-year student, and I have a seminar essay with the topic is Surface plasmonic simulation, I'm new so I don't know how to simulate plasmonic in Comsol Multiphysics. I need simulate like this picture
Does anyone have a guide or tips for me?
Thank you!!!
Relevant answer
Answer
To simulate plasmonic nanoparticles in COMSOL, you can use the "RF Module" or "Wave Optics Module"
  1. Start by setting up a new model in COMSOL.
  2. Select the "RF Module" or "Wave Optics Module" and choose the appropriate physics interface, such as "Plasmonic Nanoparticles" or "Electromagnetic Waves."
  3. Define the geometry of the nanoparticle and the surrounding medium, including any shapes and dimensions.
  4. Assign the material properties for the nanoparticle and the surrounding medium.
  5. Apply any necessary boundary conditions, such as the incident electromagnetic field or the surrounding medium properties.
  6. Set up a "Frequency Domain" or "Time Domain" study to analyze the electromagnetic properties of the nanoparticle.
  7. Run the simulation and analyze the results, such as the plasmonic resonances.
  8. If desired, use the "Particle Tracing" feature to study the scattering and absorption of light by the nanoparticles.
  9. Additionally, use the "Structural Mechanics, Acoustics, and Heat Transfer" module to analyze the mechanical properties of the nanoparticles, if needed.
  10. Compare the results with experimental data and make necessary adjustments to the model.

For a seminar paper I want to investigate the impact of Soft Power. I though about taking a stock company which got support from the state. But I don´t know how to measure soft power as variable. Any ideas or recommendations?
Thank you in advance!
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Katharina Scheve,
Some relevant info is presented below:
Our Approach to Quantifying Soft Power Up until now, all attempts to quantify or measure soft power have been based on multi-nation surveys conducted at a point in time. Such an approach has several inadequacies as itis based on very subjective poll responses, which might be influenced by the environmental factors at the time of the poll. A more robust approach should be based on getting timebound measures of a large set of variables or metrics from multiple sources. These metrics can be utilized to come up with a quantitative measure of soft power that can be measured continuously over time, rather than only once or twice a year.
Page 5
Our approach quantifies soft power based on continuously tracking hundreds of thousands of web sources, including news sites and social media, such as twitter feeds. Artifacts gathered from these sources are then classified into the five key components of soft power – Diplomacy, Socio-cultural Values, Information and Media, Business and Economy, and Education, innovation and Technology. Additionally, with sentiment analysis based on natural language processing, our system assigns a polarity and score to each artifact. Hence, our approach computes a positive-negative score for all five dimensions of soft power for all countries that the artifact refers to for each article. The scores are compared to historical frequency distributions and using time series analysis our algorithm decides if the keywords are following a historical trend or some event has had a significant impact on the keyword frequency, if the change is significant the algorithm adjusts the overall soft power score of the country based on a weighted measure of the five soft power dimensions. Soft Power Index (SPI) Development Methodology We have developed a unique big data methodology to develop SPI. In this section we provide an overview of our methodology that will give an experienced analyst an insight to our approach. In the first step we scope out the entities of interest for an aspect of SPI. For example, for SPI, we list out all entities, their attributes and inter-relationships that we need to tag and collect time series data on. For this step we utilize our IOIIG framework to list out Individuals, Organizations, Infrastructure, Institutions and Geographies of interest.• Individuals – Citizens, Non-citizens and leaders whose actions and reputations aresignificant in creating positive or negative public opinion, non-state actors, etc.• Organizations – NGO, political parties, etc.• Infrastructure – social, cultural, educational infrastructure by geographies• Institutions – Home Ministry, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education, etc.• Geography – Countries including their provinces, cities, neighborhoods. In the second step we identify a list of attributes that we need to tag and capture for each entity type. These attributes are driven by the list of actions, traits and sensors that we want to model for each entity. The third step is big data analytics and research. In this step we identify sources and then use map reduce to develop a database of parameters for the agent-based simulation as well as
Page 6
short list research theories that will be utilized for modeling the behavior and strategies of entities. For example: Individual – Individual behavior might be predicted using concepts from positive psychology or well-being theory. The agents will take actions to maximize their well-being. So, we tag actions by the entities that are targeted towards those goals, and how those behaviors are modified when new data become available. • Organizations--Drawing fro m concepts on organizational behavior, we can analyze how organizations try to increase their resources and take actions to enhance the wellbeing of their members and subsequently the well-being of the organization as a whole.• Infrastructure – what cultural and diplomatic infrastructure an entity is deploying in which country for what goals. In the fourth step we format and standardize the data collected for each entity type using map reduce approach and create a database. This provides us with an abstraction of the real-world entities. In this same step all the entities are configured for their behavior – actions that they take on other entities as well as how they respond to changes in the environment. In the last step of the process, we test the agent behaviors and calibrate them to the real-world outcomes. Validation and Error Quantification Approach. We consider the world as a system of systems. This system of systems is comprised of numerous heterogeneous (different cultures in each country), distributed (geographically isolated vs. landlocked countries), and coupled systems (trade practices and financialmarkets) that are large and complex in their own right consisting of industry, communication, political, etc. entities, which are also coupled. Two critical issues we consider in developingGII are:(a) the uncertainties in models, measurement data, and predictions lead to the need forrigorous analytic strategies that apply to both predictive models and data;(b) the dynamic nature of system of systems leads to the need for system state estimation andmodel updating strategies that adapt in parallel along with the real world. In order to make useful predictions of GII, the validity of our predictions are assessed througha continuous feedback process involving the two critical issues mentioned above.Characterization of uncertainties in data, model, and estimation
Page 7
Models and data contain uncertainties. In models, there are parametric uncertain ties associated with errors in the numerical values of model parameters and projections. Thereare also non-parametric uncertainties associated with errors in the model form (interconnects, linear vs. nonlinear). In data, there are uncertainties associated with the data source (websites, reports, databases), the timing of the data (when the phenomenon occurred and itwas reported), and rendering the data in a form that is conducive to quantitative analysis(semantics of language, curation of data). Predictive models must accurately reflect both themeasured data and the uncertainties in that data. For low-order models and stationary timeseries, it is usually sufficient to characterize the mean, variance, and higher order statisticalnature of uncertainty using single variable probability density functions. However, in a bigdata world system of systems with millions of parameters and thousands of data sources, multi-variable statistics must be used in a recurrent manner to track changes in the seprobability density functions as the real world evolves. In order to characterize uncertainty, we tap into a variety of data sources to generate a verylarge sample size of any one variable. For example, if the U.S. Soft Power overseas is themeasured variable of interest, then we utilize any and every data sources that are not relatedto military and/or economic effects to create a database of raw data. We then pass the rawdata through a series of map reduce processes to create a clean database. We then segmentthe data according to nation, geographical position, etc. to estimate the probability density function for this variable in a statistically meaningful way. Furthermore, we generate joint probability density functions that describe how soft power of other “rival” countries are related to ensure that coupling throughout the system of systems is incorporated. Multi-variable probability density functions are constructed and analyzed to verify existing sources of data and identify weaknesses that point towards new sources of data. For example, high variance may be detected in a measured public opinion variable of interest from one source or a time period relative to all others suggesting that this source is significantly biased in the way it was reported or compiled. We also consider the effects of data acquisition time and rate in constructing and analyzing these probability density functions. For example, certain bloggers may be more active over certain periods of time leading to a greater number of samples. During other time periods, these same bloggers may post material less frequently leading to a potential for aliasing in the data sources. Probability density functions of measured data are also analyzed to verify modeling assumptions such as weak coupling between two geographically separate countries. This analysis provides guidance on how to interpret model predictions in ways that honor
Page 8
variations in measured variables in the real world. For example, subject matter experts may disagree about the benefits of political pressure on fledgling democracies leading to probability density functions with significant variance. By understanding this source of variation upfront using multi-variable statistical analysis, interventions can be designed and evaluated to anticipate and manage these differences in opinion using predictive models.

he work of the United Nations and its affiliated organizations in Syria is concentrated in the fields of education and training (workshops, training courses, dialogue sessions and discussions, lectures), and support for economic projects, which include disbursing millions of dollars in the field of training, workshops, seminars, and seminars. But have the United Nations and its affiliated organizations studied the economic feasibility and the real sustainable benefit of disbursing these huge sums? I am not saying that spending these sums is completely useless, but are their benefits equal to the desired and planned benefits, especially in the catastrophic situation in Syria. How is the overall benefit of a workshop, training course, seminar or panel discussion for a group of young people if they are 10, 20 or even 100 people. In addition to the huge amounts spent on economic feasibility studies for projects such as economic, technical, marketing and training studies....etc.
Although the primary goal of all United Nations programs and affiliated organizations are lofty goals, which are to achieve social and economic development that achieves stability and sustainable prosperity. However, I see that the mechanism of disbursing these funds is not commensurate with the returns and benefits that are achieved on the ground of the Syrian reality in the medium and long term.
I think that the best solution is to focus the United Nations and its affiliated organizations on small investment projects that are characterized by direct support and in very small amounts that can achieve very large benefits in a practical, wide-reaching and sustainable way.

My co-author and I are working on a paper using the Economic Freedom of the World and 19 countries (sample cannot be increased because it is focused on a specific Region). The number of years is 19, then our sample is relatively short. We are trying to design a "non-orthodoxal experimental review", and apply diff-in-diff, but: 1) we do not have a specific treatment year, countries can be treated or not treated during all the period sample (treatment is if economic freedom score decreased, then country 1 can be treated in year 3, 4, 8, 10 (if its economic freedom score decreased those years) and not-treated in the other years that its economic freedom score did not decrease); 2) we are using an interaction model, my two interaction terms are treatment (1 if decreased the score of economic freedom, 0 otherwise), and intensity (the % variation of the economic freedom score), and other controls. We have presented in some seminars and conferences the research progress and early results of this paper but suggestions just focus on the "size of the sample", which we know could be a caveat but as I said the research intention is just the Region, the early results are significant and show the expected signs. We have not received suggestions on our "non-orthodoxal experimental review" (different treatment years, countries that can be treated or not in different years, our interaction model specification, etc...) My specific question is: Does anybody could give us some insights or suggestions on the methodology and how to respond convincingly that increasing the sample size is not an option for this research.

Hello all,
I am looking to include a dimension of Lacanian psychoanalysis to my master thesis. I am in the early phases. My focus is rooted in unlearning, objecthood, memory/familiarity/consciousness. I am also looking at topology (Borromean Knots) and the symptom. For context, I am dealing with this work in the environment of exhibition-making and curatorial work.
I wanted to start doing some more expansive reading on text offered by Lacan and I was wondering if anyone can give me guidance as to which one of his seminars/books are best suited to my area of interest.
So far, I have narrowed it down to:
The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis
Ecrits: The First Complete Edition
Formations of the Unconscious: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan, Book V
Desire and its Interpretation: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan
The Other Side of Psychoanalysis
The Psychoses: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan
The Object Relation: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan, Book IV
I will likely look at all of these but I think it would be better if I start with stronger texts. :) Thank you!

Kalina,
I am an artist and do curatorial work as well. Michael gives a good list. In my experience, Sem XI was the big break-through and has great resonance with questions of exhibition and art. One of the great things about reading Lacan is that, like clinical practice, you have to read “across the network” of his thought; i.e. it’s nonlinear, paratactic. After steeping yourself in the seminars, you can (as many academics do) retroactively linearize an early, middle and late Lacan. But for igniting thought, Sem XI was a great starting point.

Good afternoon, my dear friends and colleagues.
As part of my research, I want to ask you a question: what state support for small business is the most important?
-Financial (state subsidies for starting a business, providing soft loans, state guarantees for creating and developing an enterprise, financing investment, innovative projects, etc.)
-Property (state and local governments create modern business incubators and techno-parks in which small enterprises can develop, the state transfers its property, premises, land, equipment for temporary or permanent use to entrepreneurs, leasing is offered on favorable terms)
-Information (the state creates resources (sites or information stands) for the exchange of business information, general information distribution systems, organizes information seminars and advertising stands, industry and intersectoral exhibitions, at which potential partners can find suppliers and buyers)
-Educational (the state develops special educational programs aimed at developing entrepreneurship skills for various segments of the population, creates conditions and programs for improving professional knowledge in the field of conducting and managing a business, and organizes training seminars and lectures)
-Consulting (the state creates and maintains centers providing consulting services on organizing, promoting development and particularities of doing business, and also compensates entrepreneurs for the costs of services of such organizations)
Legislative (the state simplifies legislation and reduces the number of procedures for registering an enterprise, reduces and simplifies the tax and administrative burden (reduces the number of forms and types of reporting), introduces preferential tax treatment for small and medium-sized enterprises).

More than intellectual sessions people look forward to gala dinners and cocktail parties. Favoured fellowships and sponsored sessions have further degraded the cause. Hundreds of poster and oral presentations are mere a tool of career progression especially for post graduates. Attending conference has become a vogue, a symbol of status rather than a intellectual playground for exchange of information or knowledge. Quantity over quality have complicated things even more. The race of trying to make event bigger each year is making the actual purpose of conferences more and more futile. Almost negligible attendance during the academic sessions can be a real indicator of the declining utility of such events. Majority of individuals attend conference for the attendance or presentation certificate and credit hours. The real academic drive behind the participation is lacking somewhere. The sole purpose of some conferences has become income generation through sponsors, paid academic sessions and hefty registration fee. I am just saying all this from my experience till date as a conference participant as well as an organizer. There is no intention of offending anyone or any organization.

Question

I am currently doing a systematic review of health education programmes among music students in higher education (i.e. conservatoire students), but the way in which I define such a programme is essential to what papers I include.
Health education initiatives were eligible if they represented stand-alone interventions or were part of wider health promotion programmes. Health education programmes were defined according to WHO (1998) and had to be any planned activity or set of activities aimed at increasing health literacy and developing life skills conducing to health (e.g. decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, stress management, coping with emotions). The content of such programmes could comprise counseling, teaching, training or other educational processes such as guided group discussions or behavioural modification strategies (Zhu, Ho, & Wong, 2013). Such programmes could be part of or separate from the formal curriculum, yet taking place in a formal education music institution (college, high-school, conservatoire or university, not clinics) incorporating any relevant health-related content (focusing on psychological and/or physical issues), multi-component or formed of a single session, of any frequency and/or length and provided via any delivery method (i.e. face-to-face, via telephone or internet). Only studies focusing on universal preventative interventions were included (i.e. ‘a measure that is desirable for everybody in the eligible population’ [Mrazek & Haggerty, 1994]).
Now, according to this definition, health education (unlike health promotion) should be aimed primarily at outcomes such as increasing knowledge and/or awareness, changing attitudes, beliefs, perceived responsibility, self-efficacy, as well as training relevant skills/abilities such as critical thinking, decision-making or problem-solving. It should not necessarily or on its own be aimed, at changing actual health-related outcomes such as reducing risk of injury or lowering depression/anxiety - for such outcomes, we are talking about health promotion (which incorporates health education but goes beyond it, also encompassing changing the broader environment and ensuring relevant services are in place). However, many authors use health promotion when they only mean health education.
I have two questions:
1. Where should I draw the line given that using such a broad definition for health education programmes (aimed at developing health literacy and life skills) means I need to include both evaluations of formal health courses (that come in the traditional format of a series of lectures and seminars) and evaluations of interventions involving group discussions, more applied sessions and more focused training of specific skills, albeit with music students in a higher education institution? They both fit into the WHO definition!
2. Given that so many authors use health promotion and health education interchangeably and that only one evaluation of a health education programme looked at knowledge, attitudes and beliefs while all the others looked at health-related outcomes (although all were described as health courses), can I include all these outcomes as part of my systematic review? After all, I am looking at the effectiveness of health education programmes with regards to any outcomes! (health literacy and attitude change on one hand, and changes in actual health outcomes on the other hand)
Many thanks! I am really curious to read your views on the above!

Seminar is a task assigned to undergraduate or post-graduate students for almost all courses. Successful completion of seminar work can be measured in terms of various skill development among students. Various skills can be named as enhancing research article reading ability, understanding of topic, knowledge up-gradation and critical evaluation of the selected topic. Also, improving communication skill, presentation skill, etc. Additionally possibility of article publication based on the seminar topic. As a guide or supervisor, what practice you follow for successful completion of Seminar?
Relevant answer
Answer
Before the seminar, it's suitable to plan everything.
I want to know my position, the positions of the other guides, the positions of the participants, the place that we are going to put the materials and the tools that we'll use.
Additionally, because I'm mostly in international environments, I want to know the participant's background. Culture and experience affect the way people understand the world.
Therefore, it's essential to know your participants and try to facilitate the whole process. There is no perfect seminar, but if you take into consideration all of these issues, you minimize the failure.

Question

Hi everyone,
I am conducting a student evaluation of a pedagogical method that we have implemented in an undergraduate nursing program.
The evaluation consists of a questionnaire that is distributed to the students at the end of a seminar.
The questions includes demographic information (background information of participants, e.g. age), statements followed by a Likert type scale (1-5) -- evaluating learning outcomes and important aspects for the students learning relating to this specific method. Additionally, the questionnaire includes boxes where students can make free-text comments relating to the different questions.
Now, I wonder how I could best present these results in an article?
1. The initial idea with the free text-comments was to illustrate (using quotations) the statistical findings. Hence, to mix the comments with the statistics in order to illustrate some of the findings with quotations.
2. However, now, I have heard from some colleagues that I should perform a qualitative analysis on the free-text comments (e.g. content analysis, thematic analysis), and present the qualitative results separately in the article (i.e. NOT to mix quantitative and qualitative results).
Thus, my questions is if you believe most journals would want me to present the results using option 1 or 2? i.e. to mix or not to mix quantitative and qualitative results?
Best,
Chris
Relevant answer
Answer
In the field of mixed methods research, this would be treated as an issue of integration. Probably the most effective form of integration for the kind of data you have (and for the purpose of evaluation) would be an "explanatory sequential" design (QUANT --> qual), where you first establish a set of quantitative results, and then use the qualitative data to help understand those results. Because this design assigns a specific purpose and goal to the qualitative data, it is essentially integrated by definition.
Beyond, that you have proposed two alternative approaches to what I would call a "complementarity" design, where each method makes its own separate contribution to the overall project. These kinds of designs do not have any pre-determined way of integrating the results, and you are considering two of the most common strategies.
One notable advantage of organizing around the quantitative results and illustrating them with quotations is that it reflects the original balance toward the quantitative in your study. In particular, if you did not design your qualitative questions to generate rich, systematic data, then you may have high non-response rates and relatively brief, thin responses when people do fill out the open-ended items. Further, this strategy provides a direct route for integrating the qualitative data into the framework provided by the quantitative results.
The alternative approach of analyzing the qualitative data by themselves can be particularly problematic with regard to integration, because it often leads to two separate reports of the results -- one section for the statistical outcomes and a second section for the summary of the themes. With regard to integration, the typical solution is to use the Discussion section to say something about how the results do or do not fit together. But because the two sets of results were produced independently, this can be difficult to accomplish.
A different approach to the qualitative analysis would be to begin with a codebook that was matched to the original research questions and the accompanying quantitative measures. The goals of this analysis would be to address the findings from the quantitative data, through this "deductively" generated set of codes. But you would not need to be limited to that. In addition, you could develop new codes for content from the analysis of the qualitative data that would be generated "inductively." This second set of codes would allow you address issues that you discover through the analysis of the qualitative data. Taken together, this combination of deductive and inductive analysis is known as a "hybrid" approach.
As this long reply shows, you have entered a complex territory -- a least from the perspective of mixed methods research. A simpler reply, would be that there is no one right answer to your question, and that instead, you need to think about the kinds of results (and "Results Section") that you want to generate, as well as the resources that it would take to reach that goal.

Relevant answer
Answer
To a certain extent, what a seminar is depends on your goals, but a seminar basically means gathering together a group of experts, who talk about various aspects of a topic. Usually, there is an audience of people who want to learn from the experts.
The seminar may function as a panel discussion, or the experts may be on stage one at a time and present in-turn. There will likely be a single moderator. The seminar may be a one-time thing, or it may be a recurring series of meetings or events.
In your case, a seminar could be a group of PhD researchers sharing information to help each other, either with or without an audience.
As I said, it depends on your outcome goals.

Why would the energy loss (deltaE) of an inelastic electron collision with Hydrogen different to Deuterium? Is the energy of electron in Hydrogen greater or smaller to Deuterium? and why?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Binh,
the binding energy of an electron m is determined by the reduced mass
µ = m/(1+m/M) ; M is the mass of the core. Because D has a higher mass, than H, the reduced mass in D is higher than in H. Therefore, the binding energy in D is higher too. therefore, you need for D more energy to ionize this atom.

Should there be a "code of ethics" in the field of business use of information downloaded from social media portals?
This type of "code of ethics" in the use of information contained in social networks should be created on a national and cross-polar perspective. In this perspective, the "code of ethics" should be strictly correlated with the binding standards of business ethics and legal regulations for conducting business in a given country. Such "ethical codes" create for their own needs some companies that operate in internet marketing and use data obtained from posts, comments and posts contained on social media portals for this commercially-run marketing activity and in the field of information services.
Research on this issue shows that more and more technology and marketing companies obtain information from entries, posts, comments posted by Internet users, including users of social media portals.
The information collected from these sources from these websites is aggregated in Big Data database systems and processed mainly for the purpose of their use in the marketing activity of a given technology company or for the needs of other companies that are its clients.
In the context of the information downloaded in this way and their use for commercial purposes, a question arises regarding the ethics of this activity.
In my opinion, to ethically use the discussions, content of entries, posts posted on social media portals, it is necessary to acquire and process this scientific data using the principle of anonymity of aggregation and data processing for the needs of research, apply an objective research approach, comply with applicable ethics standards of research and in accordance with applicable law.
However, taking into account the growing Internet marketing sector, the need for a national or international "code of ethics" in the field of business use of information downloaded from social media portals may emerge more and more often.
In view of the above, I am asking you: Should there be a "code of ethics" in the field of business use of information downloaded from social media portals?

In my opinion, teaching about 6-12 hours a week is a big opportunity for scientific development, conducting research, participating in conferences and writing scientific publications. In my country, the majority of research and teaching staff conduct didactics in the meaning of a larger amount of time, ie the number of hours of didactics at universities. In my country the majority of research and teaching staff this time is often tripled - four times higher, but nevertheless, scientific and didactic employees are obliged to develop scientifically, are obliged to conduct research, participate in conferences and write scientific publications.

I have asked 100 students as to which among the 5 items they preferred in choosing the venue of the next seminar, they are given the option to choose any that they like. The data that was gathered is shown in the attached picture. The variables in the study are (Gender- F or M, Yr Level - Gr 6 or Gr 7, and the Options 1-5). My question is what statistical test would show if there is a significant difference between grades 6 and 7, and between male and female, with respect to their preferences (within variables)? or is it more sensible to test if there is significant difference with the preferences by gender vs by yr level (as a whole)?
I was looking at binomial test of preference but it is only true if you have two options, in this case I have 5.
Thank you so much in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
A Chi-squared test would give you the significance under the assumption that the probability distributions underlying the choices in both groups (grade 6 vs. 7, or male vs. female) are equal (= the null hypothesis H0).
The Chi-squared value (X²) of grade 6 vs. 7 is 4.6, and it is not very unexpected to get that large or larget values under H0: p = 0.334. For males vs. females, X² is 11.5, and it is not likely to get values that large or larger under H0: p = 0.021.
Thus, the data is sufficient to demonstrate a difference in the frequency distributions between males and females, but not between the grades.
You could analyze grades and sex together in a three-factorial model (item, grade, sex) of the Poisson family ("Poisson regression model") and investigate the 2nd-order interaction of all three factors. This model must also account for the fact that you asked 100 people twice. You could do this by including an intercept per subject in the model. I think this is getting all too complicated, so I would stay with the separate analyses (by grade and by sex).
