Quebec - Science topic

A province of eastern Canada. Its capital is Quebec. The region belonged to France from 1627 to 1763 when it was lost to the British. The name is from the Algonquian quilibek meaning the place where waters narrow, referring to the gradually narrowing channel of the St. Lawrence or to the narrows of the river at Cape Diamond. (From Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, 1988, p993 & Room, Brewer's Dictionary of Names, 1992, p440)

Hi everyone, I am currently working on building an econometric model to predict cost overruns in construction projects in Quebec. This model will identify various economic variables (inflation, exchange rates, labor costs, etc.) and use historical data tested over different time periods to evaluate the model’s robustness and accuracy.
Given the complexity of this topic, I am seeking advice and suggestions from the community. Here are some questions I have:
  1. What are the key economic variables that you think should be considered in this model?
  2. Are there any specific econometric techniques or models that you would recommend for this type of analysis?
  3. Do you know of any similar studies or resources that could guide me in this research?
  4. How can I ensure the robustness and accuracy of my model?
  5. What are the common pitfalls or challenges in this kind of research and how can they be avoided?
  6. Where could I find reliable sources of historical data for this type of analysis?
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance 😊.

Answer
The first steps in a research project involve identifying a clear and focused research topic based on a gap in existing knowledge or a problem that needs solving. This is followed by a review of relevant literature to understand the current state of research and refine the research questions or hypotheses. Next, defining the objectives, scope, and significance of the study sets the foundation. Finally, selecting an appropriate methodology and creating a research plan or proposal ensures a structured and systematic approach to achieving the study's goals.

Where are independent higher education research centres specialising in TRUE Orthodox Christianity, not to be confused with Orthodox Christianity ? True Orthodox Christianity rejects the modernism with its roots in the Russian and earlier Revolutions, including the paracanonical (canonically impermissible) calendar reforms promulgated by incomplete Robber Synods starting with the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the 1920s and the genocide of True (aka Authentic, Genuine or Catacomb) Orthodox Christianity by modernist Orthodox Christianity, resulting ultimately in the response of the True Orthodox Christian 1983 Anathema against Ecumenism by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) aka Russian Orthodox Church in Exile (ROCIE), embraced by all True, Authentic, Genuine and Catacomb Orthodox Christians. The True Orthodox genocide is numerically by far the greatest Christian martyrdom ever, with tens of millions in the former Russian Empire alone (a large majority of the 110 million "The Economist" estimates were murdered by the Soviet regime alone), was triggered by the refusal of the World Council of Churches, meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to allow a Greek True Orthodox bishop to speak about this matter, though the New York Times published his proposed address. In response the anathema was promulgated, in English, the WCC official language, at the ROCOR Synodical meeting at their monastery in Mansonville, Québec, also in Canada. Despite making up between 1 and 10% of the Orthodox Christian populations, in the broad sense of the term, throughout the world, I have been, even as an interested True Orthodox Christian, been unable to find any state recognised study centres devoted to the study of True Orthodox Christianity, as opposed to Orthodox Christianity. Some institutions, such as Cambridge University's Institute of Orthodox Christian Studies claim to have all locally active Orthodox Synods represented on their governing bodies, but didn't respond to my request for the publicly available details of the True Orthodox Christian Synods represented there. In any event, that Institute is not an Institute of TRUE Orthodox Christian studies.

Answer
No, they've been involved in instigating and coordinating the persecution of True Orthodox Christians since their forced introduction of the new calendar in the 1920s, for example sending in the Greek police to shut down True Orthodox liturgies by force, resulting in the death of peaceful True Orthodox Christians trying to block them off, peacefully, from their priests. St. Catherine of Mandra died in this way from her injuries from a Greek police rifle butt to the back of her head in 1927 after over a week in hospital (in which, though she never regained speech, she was able to write a note to her surviving husband asking him to take care of her two small children, her angels. The new calendar has always been rejected by True Orthodox Christians who uphold holy tradition and reject the thoroughly modernist dominated Patriarchate of Constantinople's failure to repent and consequently haven't re-established communion with it until this happens. The official address of the Patriarchate of Constantinople is Constantinople, Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul is the biggest city in Europe and one of the largest in Asia, with 15 million plus people and still growing fast, with the Constantinople part of it, including the Phanar, long swallowed up. The fact that they've received some very raw treatment themselves from the Turkish state, though utterly deplorable, doesn't alter this. I'm fairly certain (99% confident) no such independent institution recognised by the academic and state authorities, exists. I would much welcome collaboration in getting one set up! Long overdue since the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) seminary and college at Jordanville, upper New York state, affiliated to, but receiving no funding from, the State University of New York, joined the Ecumenist and Sergianist "Moscow Patriarchate" (entirely subservient to the Soviet Union and its successor state the Russian Federation since Sergius's surrender in 1927), in the 2007 union between the Sergianists and most of ROCA. 105 and counting years of pers

Author information
Abstract
To date, there is no quick screening test that could be used during routine office visits to accurately assess language disorders in neurodegenerative diseases. To fill this important gap, we developed the Detection Test for Language impairments in Adults and the Aged (DTLA), a quick, sensitive, standardized screening test designed to assess language disorders in adults and the elderly individuals. In Study 1, we describe the development of the DTLA. In Study 2, we report data on the DTLA's validity and reliability. Finally, in Study 3, we establish normative data for the test. The DTLA has good convergent and discriminant validity as well as good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Norms for the DTLA obtained from a sample of 545 healthy, community-dwelling, French-speaking adults from 4 French-speaking countries (Belgium, Canada (Quebec), France, and Switzerland) are provided. The development, validation, and standardization of the DTLA constitute a significant effort to meet the need for a language screening test adapted to neurodegenerative diseases.

So I'm starting an experiment in the upcoming weeks where I want to "compost" nitrogen rich ramial chipped wood trough the winter. I'm not expecting the pile to be extremely active (C:N of around 200) but I have colleagues who build gigantic pile (3m high and several meter wide) that produce lot of heat and even make the snow melt on the surface of the pile. I don't have that much material so I'd like to find the smallest size possible which would allow the center of the pile to stay warm. I work near Montreal, Quebec, Canada, we get temperature of -30°C (-22F) for 1-2 week during the winter.

The way to prevent your compost pile from freezing is the compost in a pit. The temperature of the pit will be moderated and it should maintain an insulation. Moisten your chips and top off with hay.

Hi,

I was wondering how your project is going. Have you encountered any difficulties while processing your composites? i am having some difficulties right now with the injection molding of my PLA. I started by practicing on the pure PLA, but they are giving me a lot of difficulties. The test specimen have defects in them and air bubbles. I tried tunnin many injection properties such as: the mold temp, the processing time and the time left in the mold before taking out the samples, the pressure, the injection time, and the injection temperature (nozzle and the different zones), but nothing seems to help.
Do you have any tips you could give me to make my injection adventure a little less chaotic? I am using a Haitian MA 600 II machine with a screw diameter of 24mm.

Considering that MOOC providers place priority on creating content for professional training, can we trust that MOOC can be a disruptive technology for university teaching ?
Christian Depover co-author of : "Pour comprendre les MOOCs, Presses de l'université du Québec, 2017"
Relevant answer
Answer
anything that prioritises 'professional training' maybe disruptive since it risks prioritising the short term desires of external organisations over the academic content of Uni teaching, a process that has already gone too far in the UK with the emphasis on compulsory transferable skill elements within a modular course structure
for students it could be even more disruptive since it risks even more of a course's content being shifted online, which is fine if the material can be easily accessible, unfortunately this is often not the case, particularly where students with disabilities are concerned

I do not intend to dwell on who is at fault as most literature on the subject have. What are the benefits of the international criminal justice system? Are these benefits being met in Africa and elsewhere? With the Posture of the ICC and the AU, how do we make the project work? Is the problem of a dysfunctional international criminal justice system occasioned by the textual formulation of the Rome Statute, UNSC referrals, State self-referrals, emergent Anti-ICC AU resolutions, immunities and lack of, politics, etc, etc. HOW DO WE MAKE THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WORK?

ICC has its limits, but you should first think about the UN reforms to remove the immunity of some countries such as Russia and China or the US. All countries must sign ICC. The UN security council must change to include Asian, South Amercian, and African countries. That is not the case now. However, ICC remains an excellent and unique instrument to prosecute dictators and criminals.

The increasing and alarming rate of Caesarean Section across the world is a worrisome issue. What are the solutions to address it? Ground realities and reasons are different and this issue is relevant to developed and developing world alike, unlike many health issues that are completely different in haves and have-not countries!!  What are the current evidence and updates?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Ganesh Dangal
The increase of births by caesar is a phenomenon that is observed all over the world; Three are the reasons in most cases where they are not indicated:
  • The desire for profit. Performing a cesarean operation, involves performing in a hospital, operating room (surgery room) and use of specialized personnel and expensive medicines. Of course in a normal pregnancy without complications there are fewer risks and lower costs of the procedure.
  • The mother's fear of experiencing pain with childbirth, which is avoided with the use of local or general anesthesia when a cesarean section is performed.
  • Fast living in big cities. The obstetrician-gynecologist dedicates less time and earns more money in fees with performing cesarean deliveries, compared to deliveries. Parents also have an urgent need for the child to be born as soon as possible and on predetermined dates, so as not to excessively violate their daily activities.

Estimado Ganesh Dangal

From cultural relativism emphasizes the idea of defending the validity and richness of all cultural systems. Well, although it is true that from a moral point of view all the traditions, customs and values of a particular culture must now be respected without that reigns ethnocentrism, from an ethical perspective when certain cultural patterns threaten the physical integrity of the human being, and they violate their rights and freedoms, under no circumstances must be defended or supported , and much less respected, as is the case with the ablation of the clitoris. For this practice, in addition to depriving women of the pleasure of female sexuality, can cause serious problems at the organic level such as infections, sterility, bleeding, pain and problems during childbirth, and in the worst case death itself.

The process of FGM highlights many complex universal human rights and cultural relativism arguments including, but not limited to, perspective, creation, and acceptance.  Recognizing the importance of cultural relativism, however, is also critical to having an accurate and honest discourse regarding why FGM has been viewed positively in various cultures. FGM poses serious mental and physical health risks for women and young girls, especially for those who have undergone the more extreme forms of genital mutilation. A young girl who does not undergo FGM may suffer long-term cultural consequences. For example, the girl may be ostracized by her  family  and,  in  some  instances,  may  not  be  able  to  marry.Failure to suffer through the procedure can lead to various social pressures. FGM is a practice that demonstrates the “systematic victimization  of  women.”  Critics  have  argued  that  “to say women  are victimized  reinforces  the  stereotype  that  women  ‘are’  victims. ” However,  if  women  do  not  recognize  their  victimization,  they  are denying their subordination and thus will be unable to speak out against male dominance.

Third, as an ex-Marine, Viet Vet (12/67-7/68 [Quang Tri, Hue City, Khe San and DMZ, for a couple of days) and Duke History alum (1976) I read your paper with interest. When in-country you would hear stories of people raising a hand or foot out of a bunker hoping to pick up a piece of shrapnel, or picking up a cut from you P-38 (a can opener). These stories usually had the ring of urban legends.
I don’t want to be judgmental but does a sense of “shame” play a part in the increase in suicidal tendencies. Service/unit esprit/cohesion inculcates an obligation to the group. You will never feel a stronger bond with anyone like the one you have with the people who you share a combat experience. When you leave the group (either by rotation or wounds) you feel a sense of guilt, survivor’s guilt. Especially after I got out of the service and the war dragged on, I often felt a sense of failure to my fellow Marines. God only know I really didn’t want to be in Vietnam, but neither did I want to let down my fellow Marines.

I can't answer either of those questions...however, your sharing of your experience leads me to wonder if you've had a chance to read David Wood's 2016 excellent book, What Have We Done: The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars...it details how the Veterans Administration has developed specific treatment programs to address the type of guilt and shame you are describing.  Howard Fradkin, Ph.D.

Michael:
While I agree that the borders with Ontario and New Brunswick are unlikely to change, I'm not sure that First Nations communities will act in a concerted manner. I expect that in such a case, they would negotiate with both existing federal and with new federal government's to determine which government would give the best terms.
There are  ten First Nations in Quebec, plus the Innu. The question of Labrador would also be a factor. I am not convinced that those disparate groups have sufficient common ground to act as one body, and while they may have a large land surface, they represent only 2% of the population.
