How do people indentify opportunities for public engagement? How often is public engagement required for grant writing etc.? Are there variations across sectors / fields? I work in industry, so I dont require public money, hence I dont write grant proposals. I am keen to understand more about this area following a recent MSc in Science Communication where I found out a lot of my fellow students spent a good amount of time stressing about finding PE opportunities.
Relevant answer
Public engagement opportunities are identified through staying informed, networking, and following relevant organizations. The frequency varies by project and field. While crucial in academia, industries also engage with the public for various reasons. Understanding public engagement enhances communication skills and contributes to corporate responsibility efforts.

With the current pandemic situation around the world, it comes to attention that if contact between people is tracked (via mobile devices - GPS), people could take much safer precautions by knowing if they were in contact with an infected. One of the biggest challenges in generating such a ledger is privacy. Blockchain and other security measures could provide a viable solution. But, I am raising this question to the research community to derive a mechanism where we could guarantee privacy to achieve 100% public involvement to create an active database.

In a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, we are currently trying to establish indicators and quality criteria for measuring the social impact of the social sciences and humanities. We are interested in the question of what social impacts SSH has and, of course, where the limits of measurability lie. Do you know of any relevant literature that deals with the social impact of SSH? I would be grateful for hints.

Needless to say, the field of exploration became more specific in the world of research, and researchers need to be experts in the respective fields. However, young researchers, perhaps need more exposure in different sub or relative fields to understand their own area of exploration better. It is then, can be a valid question to be raised,  since the new researchers are rising everyday and they need help with these issues.

Dear Mohammed,
I believe in a wider perspective. Broaden your range. the more you research, the more you realise how different disciplines converge. I speak especially for the Arts, which are a result of human activity. And yes, you can do both. start on a specific problem. Your sources will lead you to other aspects, other disciplines.

Dr Alan Haney and I have completed 2 volumes of a three volumes book series ("Restoring ecological health to your land" and "The Restoring Ecological Health to your Land workbook"  with Island press) and it was our intention to do a third volume focused on providing review, analysis, and perhaps bringing teams of experienced scientists/practioners to the most important restoration projects needs. We intended to find the struggling projects that could benefit from technical and on-the-ground assistance, and find the best examples of success (using the definitions in the above books). We seek projects that will also put people back to work (create employment) with satisifying/rewarding work, contribute to rebuilding human community durbility/resilience, and create durable links between people and place. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks so very much for you considerations.

Northern Aral Sea restoration project is one of the world’s most successful ecosystem restoration example.
In 2003, the Kazakhstani government, along with the World Bank, began work on the joint €62 million Northern Aral Sea restoration project. The hallmark of the project was the Kok-Aral dam, which was completed in 2005. The dam allows water to accumulate in the northern half of the Aral Sea in an attempt to increase agriculture and fish production in the area. So far, the results have been encouraging. A small fraction of the fishing industry has been revived and water is even starting to creep back towards the old harbour of Aralsk.

Dear online map makers and researchers, could you point to any recent (less than five years) online PPGIS that allows customisation of functionalities to engage lay users in spatial planning?
I am looking to perform comparative usability studies of different online mapping tools for public participation.
I am coming across a number of commercial applications of varying relevance and costs, but many of them are too costly or limited in their range of functionalities. There have been a number of research-led applications, but many of them are obsolete or the researchers have moved to industry or other exciting projects.
Here is a doi link to the abstract of a recent article, entitled "Toward Cyborg PPGIS":

Hi Ian,
ArcGIS Online offers to my understanding some PPGIS capabilities in their Survey123 extension, but it is not opensource. You can build some fuctionalities quite easily on top of Google Maps, but I at least have limited knowledge on how the dataset created this way look like.
Greg Brown builds his PPGIS solutions "in-house", Aalto University nowadays buys Maptionnaire from Mapita Ltd. as a SaaS, and actually Mapita has been offering Maptionnaire to quite many universities recently. So it depends a bit on what you aim to do, but I believe if you want to do public participation with maps, Mapita has a solution that might come quite handy.
I am happy to have a chat over the Skype, if you wish.
And just to make this clear for others - I used to work for Aalto University where I used and developed PPGIS tools in many years, and nowadays I work in Mapita Ltd. Ian and I have met previously.
Kind regards, and sorry for the slight product placement.

I’m looking for researchers based in Europe who are studying the involvement/participation of migrants and ethnic minorities in healthcare governance (including health policy-making; service planning, implementation and evaluation; health promotion; guideline development; etc.).
I also welcome information on research done on migrant and ethnic minority user participation, inside or outside Europe.
Relevant answer
Answer
These papers may be useful, though more explicit focus on minorities should probably be done in future research.

3D city models and 3D/4D online GIS are becoming more popular and new technology provides new capacities, yet very few seem to have been used for public engagement in urban planning.
I have heard about MinStad in Gothenburg (Stockholm), and other models from Hamburg, Berlin, and London, but I am not sure if the latter involved public participation.
Below is a link to an undergoing collaborative project in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, hosted by Northumbria University.

My colleagues and I are conducting a city-wide physics campaign to engage the public in thinking and talking about physics in their everyday lives. This project leads on from our dartofphysics.ie project two years ago.
In evaluating the campaign we would like to construct research instruments based around a relevant theoretical framework of public engagement.
Thank you

Answer
Very interesting. Generally people don't like to talk about physics because they are afraid of not having enough knowledge on the subject. May be if they feel more free and they have not the feeling of taking an exam they will talk about physics without shame. I don't know, in my thirdty years teaching physics, everytime I assist to a social reunion and I identify myself as physicien people looks at me as an alien.

A couple of good books discuss communities of practice, starting with Wenger's classic, and a few focus on online communities, like Kraut et al.
Can anyone provide references for strong experimental evidence that shows what activities lead to the successful initiation of online communities? Specifically, I am interested in citizen research and community research advisory panels/communities.

Governing authorities in conjunction with private companies during waterfront regeneration developments, often only touch on the public engagement process without developing an effective way to give the community the opportunity to provide input. I am looking for models or methods for this part of the process whereby the public's ideas and suggestions are converted into real outcomes (i.e better building and public open space design).

For an ongoing practical example, you could look into what the City of Winnipeg (Canada) is doing with Our Winnipeg, the City's official development plan. Page 9 of the attached report mentions the public participation strategy that went into Waterfront Winnipeg, a 20-yr vision for developing the city's 240 km of riverfront.

I will measure 'political interest' in a big survey about communication and public engagement. However, the most measurements that are around for me seem to very simplistic, using one single question or following the big election studies, two or or three item question. Has anyone found or used a more sophisticated or other simply different way of measuring political interest? Thanks a lot.
Relevant answer
Answer
Some surveys use questions about the frequency of watching, reading, or listening to the news as proxies for political interest, although, of course, people may be interested in the news without being interested in politics.  Having voted in the most recent election(s) is another, less subjective indicator, if voting is voluntary, but yields only a yes-no response.  Asking how closely one identifies with each political party is another (subjective) approach that may yield a strong, moderate, or apathetic response.  As Kylie wrote, it all depends on what you are trying to measure.  It also depends on what you plan to do with the indicator once you have it.  Do you need ten categorical responses?

Recalling the difficulties and increasing editing/translating costs which may encumber them.
Relevant answer
Answer
I beg to disagree with Aceil. If we want science to contribute to the collective knowledge, well-being and prosperity of mankind, the use of a scientific lingua franca is a must. English seems to serve this purpose well and scientists currently have no option but to learn English (I am not a native speaker, but I realize that it is much easier for Western European scientists to learn English than for colleagues from many other parts of the work!). More easily accessible publications in our native languages are and will remain a valuable means of informing our (national) general public - but are not a substitute for sharing our work with international colleagues.
Perhaps this issue will be rendered trivial when translation software really takes off:)

Interesting question. There does seem to be a huge literature around this. See refs at the end of http://el.erdc.usace.army.mil/elpubs/pdf/sr80.pdf, and within http://el.erdc.usace.army.mil/elpubs/pdf/sr80.pdf. This book looks especially good - US EPA discussed a range of implications and also monitoring strategies. I think if you read this at http://water.epa.gov/polwaste/nps/upload/Dam_removal_full_report.pdf with a more thorough review of the specific literature on monitoring methods (this book is a bit too descriptive and not precise enough in this regard) then you'll have enough to mentally exhaust you. One thing that is clear from this work, and the work of ours which I described earlier is the need for the monitoring to engage with the government decision makers, which requires both people engagement and knowledge of the legal and planning landscape. If your questions arise from a need to solve such problems in Brazil then you presumably have a different context again in terms of community engagement, legal/planning framework and stream ecology ...
