I am working on a proposal for a QI project. The project is aimed at improving the identification of both UTI and STI in adult females in an Urgent Care setting by implementation of a dysuria protocol to standardize care. I will be performing a pre/post intervention chart review to determine the success of the protocol. I am an not certain which statistical analysis test best fits my project design as I am using 2 separate groups of patients and the intervention is a QI project. Any suggestions?

Hi,
The statistical test you should perform depends on some factors:
1. How many participants do you have in your study?
Generaly speaking, if you have about 30 participants, you can use parametric methods such as t-test. But, if have only few participants, you might use aparametric test such as Wilcoxon signed test.
2. What is the scale of your dependent variable?
If your dependent variable is continuus, you can use dependent sample t-test. However, if is binaric or categorial you might use a logistic regression or Chi-squared test.

  • I'm currently working on a project designing a Polycarbonate manufacturing plant. I found two main processes for the production such as phosgene method and transesterification method. But I couldn't find any Process Flow Diagrams related to the process. This transesterification method was developed by Asahi Kasei Corp. Japan. Please -- I am seeking examples to illustrate the misunderstandings and related failings (simple and otherwise) that undermine projects and interventions on the topics of conservation, natural resources and development (with a focus on the tropics). The idea is to gather and explain examples to students. We often say that we learn from our mistakes ... but arguably we can all learn from each other people's mistakes too ... if we share them
Despite hearing many quirky stories it is hard to find examples in publications on conservation, natural resources, development etc. Surely there are plenty of examples in peoples experiences though!
There are important examples from wider topics in the wealthier world. For example, how paying blood donors as an incentive to increase donations, can decrease blood donations (as donors prefer to give), and how fining parents for collecting their children late from school has in some case actually increased the number of children collected late (as parents felt less guilty when they paid for it).
An example from my own work would be my earlier efforts to frame a project in Papua (Indonesian New Guinea) around the poorest people and then discovering that people in Papua find it offensive to be called "poor" (this concept cannot be used to motivate projects there).
Anything is potentially useful. I am especially keen to identify publications or cases that can be otherwise sourced and cited--though personal communications are welcome too. Anything fun, quirky or educational is especially desirable.

I do believe that Microsoft Team is actively engaged as a current trend worldwide because it is an online collaboration workspace that brings together instant messaging, threaded conversations, meetings, audio or video calls, desktop and file sharing.
In addition, it works with all Office 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint, OneNote, and probably with 365 Dynamics and Azure as well.
Some features are free for educators. The speed of the computer can be a problem although.

I am currently working on many different research fronts at the same time. I would like to keep track of my advances and relate tasks when various projects --eventually-- overlap. I am currently working with a regular spreadsheet, an ordinary notepad, and Evernote. Nevertheless, I get the sense that this method has reached its full potential and soon will become more a mess than an aid.
So, I was wondering, have anyone worked with a project management tool for research purposes? Which were your experiences? Which options would you recommend?
I am meaning to use it for both personal and group projects. A key feature would be to allow me to keep annotations on preliminary findings, organize tasks, relate to external sources (files, URLs, texts, and such), and also get some kind of indication of project advancement. Evernote does most of the annotation features but lacks an organization function.

I agree with @özgür - use most common tools for project management. And Trello can perfectly serve your need - grouping by projects, tasks, timelines, collaboration with your team, you can integrate with callendar or ghant as add-on (only one for free). Very easy to learn if you don't use it yet.

I've been designing this vessel which runs in the atmospheric pressure conditions. But I faced some issues after taking atmospheric pressure as the design pressure. I've been getting very low thickness values for the shell. How can I solve this?

Maybe you should follow the design codes for atmospheric tanks. Some examples are API 650, UL-142, EN-14015 or EN 1993-4-2. Read the scopes and decide the one that fits your needs. All these standards have minimum structural thickness. That means that if your calculated thickness is smaller than the minimum structural, you shall adopt the minimum structural thickness in order to be able to construct the equipment.
For full access to API 650 or UL-142 search for "law resource API 650" or "law resource UL-142" at Google. EN-1993-4-2 have also been made available online because of "the right of the citizens to know the laws that govern them".
If your case is really a pressure vessel, you also can find minimum structural thickness in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 1. No free version available online for this one, as far I know.

I developed a pre-service teacher training module (intervention), which involves educational activities of preparation, building teams, project design(after this, teachers will practice in primary school for teaching students ), implementation, demonstration and evaluation. Meaning that the pre-service teachers will be learning knowledge in university first; after that, they will transfer their knowledge to practice in primary school. So, this module involved two phases: teachers' phase and students phase.
Now, I design two experimental research to examine the teachers' motivation (experimental one ) and students' attitude(experimental two ). The study uses the quasi-experimental non-randomized pre-test and post-test control group design. In Experiment Two, the experimental group will be trained by pre-service teacher who comes from the experimental group of Experiment One. Meanwhile, the control group will be trained by pre-service teacher who comes from the control group of Experiment One.
The question is that this experimental study design needs to use two experiments or not?
I think that this study needs two experiments because students is another subject. some say that they do not need, because this study has one intervention, and the teacher and student are the different levels.

A Pilot testing of any program is a small scale implementation of potential solutions that allows team members to assess the effectiveness of the solution before making changes in the entire system. The effectiveness of pilot program can be evaluated by insuring the following :
· Whether the objectives of the pilot program evaluation are defined specifically assure that pilot project is able to meet the objectives. Whether sufficient and relevant activities are included into project.
· Ensure the gathered data to evaluate the program are appropriate
· Whether proposed analysis tools are appropriate
· Whether recommendation of the project are in conformance to the proposed project objectives.
To conclude, effectiveness can be enhanced by developing the tool that would allow for a comprehensive and effective review of each of the term that cover areas like service delivery, finance, department operations, and employee satisfaction.

You can look on sample templates online to give you an idea. The result of your initial research will form part of the POC.

Hello,
I always struggle with research questions/hypothesis when writing grants in engineering. Let's take an example: Let's say I want to do a research project on the design of an arm support to help people living with disabilities to move their arm.
I would first talk about the actual technologies in this field, explain the rationale (helping people living with disabilities) and the objective (developing an arm support and how it is different then what exists).
Then comes the research question/hypothesis. In fundamental research, I get how to write one. However, in engineering it's less clear. Saying: "the hypothesis is that the new device will be better than previous ones or that it would help people or help them accomplish 35% more tasks autonomously" sounds weak...
Or saying that the research question is "how better is our proposed solution compared to existing ones" sounds also weak.
Any ideas ?

Dear Alex,
Let me try to help you answering your question in a very generic way by telling you the same I am advising students who start their theses (mostly in social sciences, psychology, and UX but could be adapted to engineering as well):
Keep it simple at first and try to answer the basic W-questions.
WHAT are you doing? What is your research about? Say it in 1 sentence.
Connected to this, HOW are you doing it? Here, in the social sciences, usually the theoretical underpinning is outlined as well as methodology. Needs to be adapted to engineering.
Then, WHO are you in investigating (and WHO is the research for?). This can be deducted from theory and methodology.
WHERE and WHEN is your research happening (and relevant, see also WHY).
And finally, WHY are you doing this (here, in theses, the incremental value should be clear. After reading your thesis (or proposal), the reader should think about So WHAT? (applied value, I guess this could be the focus in engineering).
> WHAT is your research question (you might have more than one).
> HOW are your hypotheses for each research questions (multiple to be measurable).
> WHO, HOW, WHEN, WHERE further define the actual measurable research part.
> WHY is the reason your work matters.
As for grants in particular, the monetary value as well as the ratio costs/benefits needs to be added in numbers, best as appendix, however, the questions are the same, but add economic basic business case questions.

Thank you, as i mentioned before its for my graduation, I'm training at project of school which still under construction & I thought it might be as "throwing one stone onto two birds" , training and tracking the development of the construction which will enrich my experience ( My graduation project is the same project I trained) which I think this help in evaluating and estimation of the costs and pricing!

Dear all, I am a new user of PSAT (power system analysis toolbox).
I am now doing a project on designing a POD controller with SVC for the two-area 11 bus kundur model given in psat in order to increase the damping performance of the power system.
For now, I meet two problems:
1. The model of POD given in psat only have one input, but the POD I am going to design needs to use at least 2 inputs (one local signal at SVC bus and at least one remote signal). Is there any way to change the model into multiple input model?
2. Is there any way to create a three-phase fault on the line? The three-phase fault model I found in the PSAT library can only be connected to buses but not to the line.

Yes, you can be either editing the existing POD model using the library editor, or to create a new model for inclusion in the other PSAT models library using the well prepared user defined model interface. I recommend the later approach, but you must give a unique name to your new block, for example, PODx
Is there any way to create a three-phase fault on the line?
Yes, through adding an additional bus at the desired fault point. The line overall model should be then divided into two parts. The first part is from the sending end to the additional bus, while the second part is from the additional part to the receiving end. Each part is modeled as a line.

I Appreciate your concern to understand the data structure behind the knowledge representation.
This project is basically inspired from neuro-psychological evidences introduces by ACT-R people. Since the work is unpublished(under review) yet, therefore we are unable to give to the detail procedure.
Basically we are using Human like Declarative memory structure. In this work we assume word-net as a representative of semantic memory and emphasize on the design of episodic memory to keep historic events and actions on a timeline. Which provide a well formed structure to keep similar context with their appearance order to the knowledge base.

In a recent project designed to describe the 'flyby anomalies' via Self-Field Theory, Hans van Leunen put forward another view of structure within the cosmos http://vixra.org/pdf/1802.0086v4.pdf.
In Han's paper called " Structure in Physical Reality " he ends up with a method that is clearly based on a voltage and not on a field (as defined by electrical convention). Does this cause the problems with gauge and renormalization etc with QT?
Can we fix these problems via a true field formulation (e.g. SFT)? (Note that conventionally these potentials are so-called 'fields' and the theory is called 'field theory'.

The 'continuum' of the 'set' of real numbers as well as the 'infinity' of the 'set' of natural numbers are mathematical artefacts. The fact that these artefacts are appropriate for setting up successful physical theories for mathematical description of macroscopic physical phenomenons does not mean inevitably that these mathematical concepts are appropriate for
microscopic physical phenomenons, i.e. atomic and subatomic physical phenomenons. Tony's question is related to the question of how to overcome the mathematical artefact of the 'continuum'. The path integral approach to QM indicates that considerations which are based on discrete mathematical structures for setting up the notions of 'space' and 'time' might be more appropriate for setting up a final reasonable theory for microscopic physical phenomenons which does not require the notion of 'fields' based on the mathematical ideas and concepts of the 'continuum'.

Context:
I am working on a project to design a heated test section of a rectangular pipe to observe bubble formation. The main method of observation is via IR thermal imaging. The heating method is via an inductive heater, which will heat a strip of aluminium strip on the inside of the pipe. This aluminium strip must be glued (which adhesive to use?) to a CaF2 substrate (IR transparent), so that IR beam can observe bubble formation occurring at the surface of the aluminium foil. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know AHP can be used to calculate weights of qualitative variables like flexibility and safety.
I want to be able to also consider quantitative variables (like cost and material handling distance) and then make a choice of the most appropriate layout design for each construction phase; while considering both the qualitative and quantitative variables together.

So, why do you want to complicate your problem?
If you want to use AHP in quantitative variables you can use these values to comnpte their relationships as you do in AHP, but here working with reliables and not estimated values correspondingt to the DM preferences

You could design an equivalent membrane with two orders of cables (i.s. perpendicular). For shockwave, may be, you need only of a flexible finite element.
If you whould like to investigate a propagation of vibration this is a good approximation.
I use a not commercial software. May be it is useful for you.

There are not rules for this geometry definition because its performance depends on the travelling waves in the premises of the secion and they depends on the geometry of the muffler and the acosutic source as a whole. The problem that you want to tackle is difficult but probably you want to check a text book writen by Dr. Munjan that describes the mathematics of muffler attenuation:

I have developed a software in Sustainable Airport Pavement Management. This software is the integrated of life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). This tool can compare three different pavement design in deterministic and probabilistic method and choose the cheapest option and shows environmental impacts of each alternative during their life-cycle.
I named it L2C3A2 (because of LCCA+LCA) but I need your help if you have any better suggestion name for it (my friends said it is very robotic name!).
ANY SUGGESTED NAME IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

I assume the context of your question is harm to workers, public and the environment. The UK HSE states risk less than 10-3 /annum impairment is tolerable. This means that the number of fatality should be less than one per 1000 years. You must spend as much as necessary to achieve this requirement, since otherwise HSE won’t issue a permit to operate the installation.
However, this is not the end of the dialogue with HSE. You must also prove the risk is as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). UK regulations require that you must improve the safety until the cost of improvement is disproportionate with befit it gives.
You other question “Long term planning to avoid extra shutdowns in operations…” is in fact asset protection and HSE is not interested, as this is not a public safety issue. This is up to the owner to decide to spend now or later. You have to calculate which of these two option is cheaper considering the probability of events.

I am designing a project and I would like to know how many subjects should I measure to find whether there are statistical differences between the different conditions.
I know that there is not a close answer for this, but I would appreciate suggestion or sources to calculate it. 
In the experiment each condition defined by two factors. Let's say that the first factor can be A, B or C and the second factor 1,2 or 3. Then we have nine different possible combinations A1, B1, C1, A2, B2, C2, A3, B3 and C3.
Actually one of the conditions is not possible so it would be actually only different conditions.
With similar combinations I don't expect that there is any difference or. at least, not very big. Between some others I expect (actually I already know) that there is a big difference.

Search something like 'planning sample sizes for two-factor studies'. Usually you need to specify the power of the test (power is the probability of detecting a factor effect of a given size, and this is a function of the number of observations per treatment). After specifying power, there are formulae or tables for sample size determination. You do yourself some favors in the data analysis if you have the same sample size per treatment.  
You might consider the textbook 'Applied Linear Statistical Models' Fifth Edition by Kutner, Nacthsheim, Neter, and Li. Its the 'big book' of linear regression and ANOVA. They have a chapter in there on the two-factor study with subsection on sample size determination.

I am doing the project design power supply system of industrial plant. I wonder which method is used for estimate power demand in reality. And where can i find the factors of utilization and diversity?

it depends what kind of forecast you want since there is tremendous difference among long term and short term.  If the case is the 2nd y have to consider neural nets, if the former than a form of regression  (plenty in literature)

CPM has two types of calculation. Forward path, backward path, then slack and then critical path. Most of the time while in paper solving, it is consider that nodes with 0 slack will be the critical path but in real scenario, it is totally different. There are no finite number of resources that include cost and time too. The project cannot be for unlimited time period. Along with the in real life schedules, we consider that nodes with minimum slack as 0 nodes are only possible in perfect schedules.

In addition to the response by Alfa, you might also wish to consider Emerald and Elsevier Publisher as they also list a number of Journals specific to ‘Project Management’ such as the ‘International Journal of Project Management’ published by Elsevier; the ‘Built Environment and Project Assets Management’; ‘Engineering Construction and Architectural Management’ also published by Emerald.
Most of the Universities have access to those publishers by paying some kind of fee which would enable Academic Staff free access. However, I’m aware that not all Universities subscribe to that which would pose as problematic when you want to research those areas. Notwithstanding, there are some journals that you could also get through ‘Open Access’. While you have not specified the context of your research, some journals are focused on ‘developing countries’ such as the ‘International Journal of Construction in Developing Countries (JCDC)’ which you could try. I’m attaching one of my articles as previously published under the same journal (JCDC). It’s in the area of ‘risk management’. I’m also attaching another on ‘barriers to risk management’ as published in the ‘International Journal of Construction Management’. While both articles are in the area of ‘risk management’, some studies have demonstrated linkages between ‘RM’ and ‘project performance'. Finally, the 'Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM)' maintains a data of past conference papers, and using the search engine with the appropriate keywords associated with your research area, you will be able to access and download quite a number of good articles. They also list some Journals of which you could at least read the abstracts just to get a feel of the current research.
Another option would be to search through ‘ResearchGate’ as some Authors (including myself) tend to upload their articles which you could easily download.
