Classifying countries by 'live to work' versus 'work to live' is challenging. Typically, nations with competitive economies lean towards 'live to work', while those emphasising work-life balance veers towards 'work to live'. However, such classifications are broad generalisations with significant variations within individual countries.

In this article, we offer a two-pronged response. First, we speak to problems within postmodern theory itself. We argue that, when taken seriously, the theory leads to contradictions in epistemology, to fragmentation in knowledge, to opportunism in interpersonal relationships, and to nihilism in moral action and commitment. Second, we demonstrate how many of the legitimate concerns of postmodernists can and are addressed in current 'modern' research programs. Old and new challenges for the autonomy of social sciences

 Abstract

The comparison of the picture of social sciences at the beginning of the 20th century and their state at the start of the 21(st). leads to the discovery of unexpected changes, contradictions and paradoxes typical of post-modernism. A question is addressed: do all these changes, which bring about the discussion of the post-modern era, cover also sciences, and social sciences in particular. Paradoxically, the post-modern era of informationalism and a society of knowledge is not conducive to the autonomy of science and consequently disturbs the frail and delicate autonomy of social sciences. The post-modern phenomenon of departing from the modernist division of sciences and scientific disciplines manifests itself in theoretically and methodologically dubious cultural, social, political, and other studies. One can look at that phenomenon as a reaction to excessive fragmentation and autonomization in social sciences and an attempt of integrating reconstruction aiming also at eliminating the autonomy of theory in relation to practice.

Abstract

Social history of modern science, particularly the way it acquired social legitimacy, clearly depicts the science and society relationships emerging from the time of Galileo. The social institution of science has evolved as one of the most powerful, highly influential and sought out institutions. Knowledge as public good; peer review of science; prominence attached to open publications; and premium placed on professional recognition and scientific autonomy remained the hall mark of science for the last three centuries. Based on this ethos of science, the social institution of science evolved a unique social contract between science and society in the last six decades. As we enter the second decade of twenty-first century, the social institution of science is undergoing a major change. Three societal forces are responsible for the change: (i) globalisation; (ii) industrial and post-industrial society; and (iii) climate change. What is at stake? Is there a significant change? I haven't read all the essays in the book, but many and maybe most of them are addressing what I think you mean by "stasis" and "lack of diversity."

Every epoch at its beginning manifests its negation to the previous era and then creates its own values. The prefix "post", that is used so often to identify number current trends suggests that we are at the beginning of Postmodernity.

I don't know about the referenced books because I have not read them but my book "Human Rights, What Are They Really?" would be a good reference. If all Africans knew and understood the theory of fundamental rights that is presented in the book they would have rules that would apply to human interaction in all situations. These would have a similar regulating effect as the rules of the road have had in regulating human interaction when behind the wheel of a vehicle on the public road. The theory of rights also enables evaluation of government behaviour on an objective basis and can provide an authoritative reference for opposition to government and prosecution of offensive government leaders. If people are not aware that they have fundamental rights as human beings they will allow themselves to be bullied and persecuted.

I can see a significant difference between the two periods, in the former, people were more actively engaged with securing their present and future ends, be it with regard to their own future, for their posterity,  for a rainy day and of course were more involved with striking balance between their earnings and social standing.  Contrary to it, in post modern era, people have started living in present, they are least bothered about their rainy day, they drag more pleasure in wrong doings, and those who have secured their future ends in modern era are more lavish in their life style.
