Questions related to Police
I am a doctoral candidate at Walden University. My dissertation is centered on the lived experience of black female police officers and their perspective of excessive use of force administered against black males
I'm co-authoring an article with an historian looking at the 1975 police shooting of Denise Hawkins in Rochester, NY. This dissertation examines police use of force during the 1970s in Rochester, NY. I would love to read it in its entirety. All help is appreciated! It was written at SUNY Albany.
Hello everyone,
I am currently working on my master thesis about blurring boundaries between military and police. I have included all research available of the subject, but I am struggling with the way I should code findings and execute a proper systematic literature review. All tips and help are welcome.

My null hypothesis is that "there is no significant relationship between socioeconomic characteristics of the victims and their perception of treatment by police." Perception of treatment by police consists of three statements and is measured using the 5-point Likert scale. I opted to perform ANOVA and tested the normality. But the data failed to achieve the normality. Please suggest a suitable test find an association when the data is not normally distributed.
According to the (UNODC, 2015), illicit drug use is a multi-facet problem which is affects millions of people world-wide. The consumption of illicit drugs has increased over years in the Mauritian population, and it is affecting the population at large, cutting across all age groups and classes, in particular touching the youngsters; presently there is 40% of youngsters aged between 15 and 25 years who consume synthetic drugs in Mauritius (L’Express, 2018). This phenomenon leads to a massive impact to social harm, health issues and economic complications.
The article of Dr. T. Ibrahim and Dr. S. Peerally 2019 sheds light on public health measures that is helpful in tackling the current problem of illicit drug use in the island of Mauritius.
An increase in statistical figures year after year in Mauritius is causing chaos in the population. Institutions like the educational system, the police force and road traffic Management are relentlessly facing real problems like, increased rate of school failures, domestic violence, divorce, road traffic accidents, crime as well as a decrease in the work force of the country (Ibrahim, T. et al. 2019)
The judiciary in Mauritius, relates that from statistics gathered, there is decrease in safety, couple with an increase in criminality rate can precipitate a drop in the amount of tourist and subsequently a drop in the economy of Mauritius. Mauritius depends on the tourist economic as it is one of the main pillars of the island (Ibrahim, T. et al. 2019)
What are the main solutions and alternatives to the combat of Drugs and solutions to eradicate illicit substance in the country ? The Govt and all related institution are merging to only one common problem that is drug.
Over the years the promotion processes have changed in the police services. From succession, on the job training to degrees, exam and interview process. Does that change have an impact on the effectiveness of supervisors in the organization.
Good evening,
I am currently finishing my master thesis about the blurring boundaries of tasks and responsibilities between police and military personnel worldwide but also specifically Belgium. This is a master thesis in line of my master's degree at the university of Ghent, where I will be graduating in the study Public administration and management. If there are any articles available and you would like to share these with me to help with the research, feel free to do so. It will help me out immensely.
Kindest regards,

We are currently working on research analyzing how media exposure affects police perception. We measured exposure and police perception and confidence using a four-point Likert scale questionnaire. We used multiple items to test each variable.
We have finished data-gathering and are now at the crossroads on how to go on with our data analysis. We tried Pearson first but find out later on that it wasn't the suited procedure for Likert scale data and now we wanted to try Spearman but is not really familiar with how to do it properly.
We are also newbies in using SPSS so we don't know how to transfer our data from excel to spss to get started. I hope you can help and guide us.
I'm doing research study among the fire Brigade, police personals, and municipal Corporation workers.
What word I can use to describe the above population..
Hey everyone,
I've got a bunch of use of force data from my local police department. Officers are required to file Subject Resistance Reports whenever they use force. Each PDF report has a table with multiple check boxes. What's a good application to scrape this data? I've been looking at docparser but wasn't sure if there was something better.
Thanks!
Ted-
PS. I've attached a sample. I've got ~3,500 of these reports.
Background:
That in observed instances and Perception of Corruption index reports, Police have detained motorists or coerced them into parting with bribes. That in many countries, Police lack the necessary tools for on-the-spot inspection and preservation of evidence e.g cameras or online mobile devices. That even when the Police cause a vehicle to be driven to Police stations, the Police stations lack the necessary equipment to provide Inspection as anticipated in respective Traffic Acts. That on matters Traffic, the Police stations become centers of extortion, frustration and inconvenience as opposed to service and facilitation for the benefit of motorists. That in many countries, there is no tracking of how many stops and inspections Police conduct in their daily routine thus leaving room for abuse of these random checks and stops.
This project seeks to establish the circumstances that lead to the lack of transparency in Traffic policing activities

The Capstone is complete, responses no longer necessary
My graduate capstone is reviewing research on MORAL DISTRESS SYMPTOMS as they apply to (contribute to the emotional state of) police and the contribution it makes to police violence (use of force beyond a threshold).
For example, moral distress from working with child sex abuse material could lead to perceiving everyone as an abuser and influence decision-making.
Police violence is more likely in an officer with compromised decision-making skills (ethically or due to hypervigilance.)
Any research on racism and how it influences this topic is appreciated.
Hello, please forgive any errors as English is not my primary language.
I am looking to study crime rate over a period of time in a given county. I am looking for a correlation between independent variable of public unrest over police brutality and a dependent variable of crime rate. I would like to compare a period of time before a certain high-profile public police incident with the time period since that incident, and how crime rate has changed, if at all.
My question to esteemed researchers here. Would a bivariate correlation be the best test for this in SPSS? If not, what would you suggest?
Thank you.
Hello,
I am currently working on my thesis and I am trying to investigate the link between the adoption of certain AML policies and local crime rate across different American countries - South, Central and Northern America.
I am aware that most crime statistics are going to be quite unreliable in a sense that the law inforcement operates and reports crime with different intensity in each region. Also the fact that a crime is not reported/person not incarcerated does not mean it did not happen.
Putting these issues aside, is there any reliable source of such data? I know Eurostat's database is quite good and I am looking for something similar, but regarding the American region (except the United States, where the records are quite extensive). Also, monthly statistics or classification by the type of crime (narcotis or money laundering related) would be really helpful for my analysis. Also, I am not planning on working with statistics coming from surveys or witness testimonies, I prefer the actual police or other institutional reports.
I am working with the UNODC database for now, but wanted to try and see if there is anything better out there.
Thank you for your help!
Hi Everyone,
I have an assignment due for May 10 in which I am asked to critically examine, concerning wider literature, the accountability of the Irish police force.
If anyone has conducted or knows of literature relevant to this question I would be grateful. Even if your knowledge relates to the police force of another country, it would be useful for comparative purposes.
Kind regards
LIAM
Hi all!
I am currently working on a research proposal that'll be used for my capstone next year. My research question is, "what is the relationship between previous interactions with police and college students' perception?" I am currently stuck about what test I will most likely run in SPSS to analyze my data. So far I have Pearson's correlation for testing interactions and perception. Another than that I am a bit unsure what another tests would most likely be good fits.
Police efficacy after Covid-19
Hypothesis
‘The use by the UK Government of the Police Service alone to enforce covid-19 restrictions has significantly harmed confidence in its impartiality and could take some considerable time to recover from, thus effecting future efficiency.’
My hypothesis stems from my own view that policing Covid-19 breaches should have taken more of a multi-agency approach using local government health and safety officers alongside the police, where possible. Clearly, by making this a wider responsibility the community may have seen a more collective response to a national problem.
I am currently developing a qualitative research proposal to study the effects of stress on members of law enforcement, and determine its correlation on the high rate of police suicides. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach a police department to begin my research?
In suicide prevention there are many high-risk populations hiding in plain sight that are overlooked. One such group is police chiefs. There are at least 3-5 media reports of suicides of chiefs, deputy chiefs, and sheriffs every year in US big cities and small towns. There doesn't seem to be much literature on suicide risk among in the upper echelons of local law enforcement. These individuals accrue all the suicide risk affecting those they manage plus that coming with their jobs. This often takes the form of being terminally trapped between the demands of elected officials and the needs of their departments and communities. Many lack civil service protection and may face termination or demotion if they resist budget or staffing cuts, "political" personnel decisions, threats to consolidate with other jurisdictions, and worse. Community dissatisfaction, personal issues, and pending retirement may also be factors. In any case, suicide prevention targeting police (as well as other emergency responders) must address risk at all levels of the department or agency.
I am currently conducting my final year dissertation which is looking at the efficacy of common police lineup practices. However, before I launch my study, I have put out a pilot study which is assessing whether any of the photos I have selected for the lineup are incongruous for any reason, or if my target photos are more salient or conspicuous than the others, which may cause them to be selected at a higher rate.
In my pilot study, participants viewed the same lineups as will be in the final study (8 lineups in total, with 6 photos per lineup), but were asked to indicate whether any of the individuals within the lineups stand out for ANY reason, such as the quality of the photo compared to the others, the background of the photos or any other reason.
Looking at the results, I can see by tallying up responses that they are not being selected at a higher rate than the others, however, I am unsure of how to correctly analyse the data as I know a tally isn't an appropriate method of analysis. Would I need to input these results into SPSS for example, or is there a more simple approach?
Thank you in advance!
Capstone for MS in Forensic Psychology. I am connecting the symptoms of moral distress with the causes of police violence. If research has been conducted in this area, I have not found it. I do not want to miss any recent or current research between the two.
Thank you, and Happy New Year!
Looking to find appropriate submissions to our International Employee Assistance Digital Archive that will support professionals who are asked to support Police and Firefighters during the COVID Pandemic and Racial tensions in the US
As many of you know, the US police departments are well armed with the latest technology to keep us safe. Robotics is being added to their arsenal of things to acquire—social work is usually not part of that arsenal. Face recognition is based on the population of faces used to train the AI algorithm, and this being so, it is very likely that if trained on white faces only, the victims of police abuse via robot will be people of color (which is no different from what we have now by having white police officers in charge of protecting and killing). Of course, one way to level the playing field is to have China program the algorithms on its population of one billion Asian faces so that both black and white faces here in America are killed at the same rate of error, which some might see as going a long way to improving race relations but the 70 million who voted for Donald Trump might object to this solution--especially (and ironically) the black people who voted for him thinking that when the robot sees them it will think 'white face'.
Research I am readiness to fire police officers at the perpetrator (at a shooting target) on various kinds of stimuli. I evaluated the reactions in seconds and hundredths of a second.
I have received a hear-say information, that people with autistic traits are significantly represented among policemen. Supposedly, Tony Attwood detected 15% of them in Australian police force, which is the greatest prevalence, next to IT occupation. Can you help me find that citation ? Also, I am generally interested in articles about what work positions autistic people usually take, are successful at, or at least can keep them for some time. Articles using some quantitative measures / statistics are prefered. I am volunteering to write an article about autistic people in non-stereotypical job position.
Hi all,
Throwing this out to the larger crowd for any pointers that may arise.
Firstly, I am a Law Enforcement Officer which gives me access to certain material not available to the public. As such I was pursing a PhD based on the research area of how to efficiently locate and analyze CSAM from large data sets (such as 1 million+ images where <10 are suspect material) The process I proposed was to Pose Detection to locate body figures, extract them from the image and examine for skin tone and where over a set threshold examine through a trained neural network on CSAM for recognisable "body parts" with any positives being flagged for human review.
Using this system I suggest that terabytes of images could quickly be examined and reduced to a much smaller subset, and in theory the true positive would be much higher than that seen with the like of GriffBrain / Axoim detection which review the entire image.
Unfortunately, whilst I am Law Enforcement, my university now doesn’t wish to be associated with the CSAM research, given the ethical considerations of having to train a neural network on material which is illegal for majority of the world to possess, and the difficulties in publishing the material for verification.
That has left me in Year 3 (Part Time PhD) without a research topic.
Would anyone have any suggestions of how I could adapt the proposed research to something a little more palatable whilst remaining useful to the real world? Unfortunately the PhD Supervisors are drawing a blank as its outside of their actual field.
Alternatively, any suggestions for a linked / similar research within Big Data (or possible CCTV Forensics) that needs completing? It's a long slog back to conducting a new lit review but thats where I'm heading :-(
thanks
Richard
Are there some comparative country studies about civilian oversight of the police, especially for CEE countries?
discussion on how the police will engage the community including academic institutions and business owners together with private security industry.
Corona spread in India is the highest at present and numbers are daily increasing. We find that about 30 percent people do not use masks and many are keeping mask below the mouth to escape from police so that they can pull it to cover mouth and nose when a traffic signal is nearby.
The corona has affected the economy of India worst than any other country in the world and GDP is highest in negative direction. it is affecting the poor very badly. Many shops and small entrepreneurs are forced to close their business.
With all the above conditions, Indian citizens in large number are not taking the condition seriously. This phenomenon is quite strange and worth for research to understand the intention and behavior of these people. is there any effect of culture on irresponsible behavior? Whether, the information given by WHO that death rate of young people due to COVID-19 is negligible, is the reason for negligence? Whether people want to show that they are more immunized? What is the role of social stigma of considering corona patients as persons who committed sins so they got corona, and role social stigma of boycott of family having corona patient forcing the people to hide the illness?
I am the director of the police academy at Dallas College in Dallas Texas USA. I am also a graduate student in Applied Criminology and Police Management at Cambridge University, UK. Scholars I'm reading are keen on talking about the dearth of material on police training efficacy. Concerned about that, and about legitimacy-related issues, I thought I'd put a feeler out.

What effect does the national system of police training on the effectiveness of cooperation carried out on Interpol platform? Can you describe general assumptions of training in this area?
Program of Instruction that is utilize are mostly outcome-based education. Mostly police officer are confused on how this will improve their academic capability and moral responsibility .
George Floyd's case shocked the world. Physical restraint is a method used by the police but also in the management of psychiatric patients who pose a danger to themselves or others. In your opinion, should there be more accurate training for those who might be forced to carry out this type of maneuver?

Pollution mask for traffic police basically
I am currently trying to obtain data from Cyber Security Malaysia and it hasn't been an easy one. Do you have any advice?
When they support one that matching to their mind set-up or ideology, they might overlook the right of other one.... E.g. violent protester vrs. police.
What do you think that which will be the most effective solution to reduce the Noise Pollution?
o Education
o Government efforts
o Involving NGO’s
o Empowering police
o Empowering Civil Authorities
o Technological Solutions
Did you measure the speed of the police officers response to the physical attack? I have a sample of hundreds of police officers. I'd like to compare it.
I note that you attribute inherent unfairness or abuses of state power (such as the breach of fair trial principles) of what was known as a very sectarian state as the fault of a small minority. As someone well experienced in police abuses and excesses in NI it is not lost on me that you do not give any regard to what 'truth on the ground' might be in nationalist districts and their daily lives? Of course if the threat is exagerated, contrived or even manipulated, as the security forces have a reputation of doing, then you work to secure funding for the same people you are conversing with -and who are judges in their own cause. On that basis your work looks like it will merely contribute to previous politically motivated investigations and analysis as the likes of the now infamous Widery Report.
I am looking to identify current experts in the area of Random Breath Testing (or similar practice where police do not require reasonable suspicion). Thank you for any replies.
Is this always so?
Is police/military intervention part of the problem or the solution to crime?
See what is happening in Brasil now:
My question asks does it make sense to collect tax and allow three month stays from most countries for women who want to engage in Sex Work and not ever or (periodically) test them for sexually transmitted disease? Even still if they did, many workers are working after their permits have expired and do their best to avoid getting caught by the "Sex Police" which is what they are in fact.
I understand that we don't want to force people and all testing should be done by choice or anonymously because stigma, even among the population in question is alive and well, but in this particular circumstance what are your thoughts?
A second question is if they are indeed "slightly positive" or rather generally undetectable levels of virus should they be allowed to work?
Lastly, it is criminal to pass an infectious disease in this particular jurisdiction, responsibility lies on both parties meaning an investigation of who did what ensues, the law can not be avoided with consent or knowing waived. Does this sever any beneficial outcome? It's my opinion that it doesn't but I would be interested to hear other people's views.
Does it come from Ministry of Health (based on what data) or from the police? I think there may be some under-estimation along the pipe-line. Good data may guide the legislator and government introduce good suicide awareness and suicide prevention programme targeting at-risk group. Low data mislead everybody to think things are fine out there. Currently WHO is quoting Malaysia per annual suicide rate as 6/100K population.

- My IV is continuous - exposure to fear of death scale/mortality salience with two conditions; no exposure (control) and exposure (experimental)

Am I correct in using an ANCOVA? How do I tell SPSS that the IV is from two different groups? I've coded the control group with a '0' but I don't think that still worked.

There are arguments that a single column GC is not sufficient to determine ethanol concentration in blood by head space GC for police DUI arrests. This is because of some unknown VOC that may coelute with ethanol inflating its quantitation. I’m trying to find research that proves this happening or is it just all assumptions that it may happen. Police labs even with a single column GC are able to separate the most common VOCs. Nevertheless, the argument continues that some unknown VOC is still possible and needs to be separated. But going to dual or even triple column won’t remove the possibility, only decrease it because the VOCs are unknown. In other words, it is not possible for a lab to have standards for all possible VOCs and show they can be separated from ethanol. It is true a MS detector would resolve everything, but with today’s technology MS is too expensive and too slow.
Does anyone know of the research I need that shows VOC’s not interfering with ethanol on more than single column GC?
Corruption in police departments: Undoubtedly subject matter is concerned with the government of the state but representation was submitted to the accountable public functionaries of state and senior rank officers in the state and when the aggrieved didn't get justice then he preferred to submit the application before the central government as justified in the federal system where central monitors the activities of the government through its agent i.e. governor and his office and this agent gives its report to centre that whether the government is running in accordance with the framework of the constitution or not? Consequently, the central government takes action in order to establish the machinery of the state in accordance with the framework of the constitution if the state does not support then centre may also take action against the government of the state. Here applicant is aggrieved with the lawlessness and anarchy in the state so wants to seek interference of the appropriate public functionaries in the matter against the unlawful step of the public functionaries of the state but incompetent staffs of the government of India habitually as made practice, sending the matter to state in the name that matter is concerned with the state government which is reflection of lawlessness, anarchy and chaos in the system. When our courts have been unresponsive, then where to seek justice a common man is a burning question?
Hi I am about to begin research for my dissertation which I intend to complete an historical analysis of Miscarriage of Justice in Wales. I want to breakdown the stats in relation to cause; police corruption/judicial failing/falsification of evidence/non disclosure. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
If you are a police officer, teacher, nurse, occupational therapist, fire fighter, social worker, doctor, accountant, administrator, youth worker, childcare worker, auditor, paramedic, HR officer, procurement officer, solicitor or have any other role in the Welsh public service your help would be very much appreciated!
I’m a research student at the University of South Wales studying a doctorate in business administration. My area of interest is the relationship between self-awareness and leader effectiveness and how this changes across different job levels across the Welsh public service.
I'm looking for anyone who is employed in any of the Welsh public service organisations to help me with my study. It would involve completing a quick questionnaire which would take a maximum of 15 minutes.
Please drop me a line and I'll send you a link to the questionnaire
Thank you
I acknowledge the fact that Mexico is not your traditional case of insurgency, but there are some factors to consider in this sense: the violence towards the Mexican government, police forces and citizens added up with the fact that the country is being ripped of economically (plus the considerable amount of time Mexico spent fighting cartels) by TCOs. I'm looking for help to narrow down my research puzzle as much as possible and correlate it with appropriate data/evidence. For example, would you analyse state's performative power in relation with TCOs activity? Any help appreciated.

The International Monetary Fund has warned leaders in the run-up to the G20 summit in Hamburg that they are putting at risk a recovery in global growth by pursuing national policies at the expense of internationally agreed rules on trade and climate change.
The IMF said the global economy was on an upswing and, in the short term, trade and GDP growth were expected to improve this year. But it warned that risks to growth remained, including from protectionist polices and a failure to cooperate in areas such as climate change.
It said: “A well-functioning multilateral framework for international economic relations is another key ingredient of strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth. Myopic pursuit of zero-sum policies can only end by hurting all countries, as history shows.
Discussion document on best practice for issues around theses publishing
Traditionally, theses for higher degrees were published by universities in hard copy only. Now increasingly, these are also archived and may be made freely available via university repositories. They may or may not have associated licenses such as those from Creative Commons which also allow reuse.
Conclusion
- Journals
• Should have clear policies about work derived from theses and should usually consider them as similar to preprints
• Should provide clear instructions on how to cite work derived from theses
- Authors
• Should inform journals about any work contained in a thesis that form the basis of a submitted manuscript – ie provide a citation to the thesis
• Should be aware of their institutions’ polices on publication and availability of theses

Since the publication of Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN in 1818, readers have been trying to puzzle out what her cautionary tale about the disastrous consequences of a scientific experiment actually means. Many critics have argued that it is a warning against certain types of medical research.
In my own contribution to a book, titled FRANKENSTEIN'S SCIENCE (Routledge 2016), I have identified a number of passages that demonstrate that Shelley was by no means opposed to scientific investigation. But how does this square with the dystopian drama that is fleshed out in her novel?
Scientific curiosity cannot be policed. But I believe that Shelley's novel argues for the need to explore what the scientists' curiosity is about: what do they (or "we") want to know? And what benefits do we expect to follow on from answering some of our most urgent questions? What are the promises of scientific exploration (to quote the title of one of my other books: FAUSTUS AND THE PROMISES OF THE NEW SCIENCE, Routledge 2016)?

Any country (independently) can not overcome dangerous hidden monopolies with international roots.
According to Micheal Halliday's transitivity analysis, words "concede" and "accuse" should be considered Verbal process or Mental (cognition). Both words are a bit confusing.
"Grave is of missing girl, concedes minister"
" Party accuses police of abducting its central leader"
Above are two examples for the usage of both words.
1. Do you know good research concerning the correlation of different methods of data collection (questionnaire, pulse rate, cortisol concentration, etc.) in terms of external criterion validity?
2. Do you know good studies regarding process related stress profiles of specific occupational groups, which work under conditions of uncertainty (e.g. actors, lawyers, physicians, police officers or teachers)?
3. Do you know research that broaches the issue of average stress-level differences between vayring activities (resting, talking, running, being in the center of attention, etc.)
4. What causes more stress: Observing a stressful event from the view of a third person (like in movies) versus observing a stressful event from the view of person involved? Is there empirical evidence?

International law presumes the equality and sovereignty of all states, irrespective of land size, population, military might, economic strength, etc. Given this presumption, and coupled with the seemingly non-existence of an international police mandated to police the actions of states, is it possible to have effective compliance with international law?

I'm considering whether it would make sense to curate an online, annotated, bibliography of scholarly research related to police body-worn cameras. And, if so, what would be good tools to use for such an undertaking? Ideally, the bibliography could allow annotation, maybe something social (but not necessarily so), and maybe integrate some form of analytics, e.g, Google Scholar metrics, etc. Would something like Mendeley provide any of these sorts of features? Some other reference manager? Any plugins or workflows for Wordpress? Thanks!

I am a master student (not so familiar with statistics) and planning a dissertation on the policy-effectiveness of information disclosure on crime rates. As the background information, the UK police provides street-level crime information on an interactive mapping system from 2014 and this covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland only.
I am planning to research the above by separating two parts. Part 1: between Coventry's crime rates for 3 years before 2014 and those for 3 years after 2014. Part 2: between Coventry's crime rates after 2014 and other similar-sized Scottish city (I have not decided yet)'s crime rates after 2014. *there is no special meaning on selecting Coventry just I am living there.
I am trying to find appropriate statistical methods for the two and, in a similar study, I found that the researchers used 'Fixed effects model' and 'Difference in differences' techniques. However, because that study involves the more number of variables and deals with many hypotheses, I am not sure that those techniques are also suitable for my research.
I just finished reading this article on the founder of the neo nazi website stormfront.
This following passage sticks out to me. I thought it might stick out to others who are in the field of behavior analysis.
"After the breakup, Dan Newman, another friend at the time, remembers Anglin once bashing his head into the walls of his bedroom in such a frenzy that his mother had to call the police."
A few semesters ago a assisted a doctoral candidate with data collection with a severely autistic patient.
He wanted to design a program to decrease self injurious behavior in a severely autistic child, specifically head slapping and head banging.
I know you cannot diagnose someone as being on the autism spectrum from one select passage.
However, if you use his friend's description of the behavior, could it not function as an indirect assessment? And, if so, could it be possible that one of the worst propogandists in our current political climate is on the autism spectrum?
