Hello,
I am supervising a PhD study on water and irrigation in Egypt. To submerge in the context I would like to read a good environmental history book about Egypt and the Nile covering the period 1800-2000s.
Some books I already found:
Jennifer Derr (2019) The Lived Nile: Environment, Disease, and Material Colonial Economy in Egypt
Alan Mikhail (2017) Under Osman's Tree: The Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Environmental History
What is your recommendation, and why?
Thanks in advance for your time to read and answer this question!
Kind regards
Chris Seijger

Dear colleagues,
I was trying to find texts of some of the capitulations treaties of the Ottoman Empire with European powers, as I am preparing study material. However, I was able to find only doctrinal sources (articles) quoting them, but no full text or parts of their texts.
Can anyone help me where to find their texts, ideally online in english. It can be any typical capitulations agreement like with England, France, Venice, Russia or any other. Just to give some examples in the study book to prove the point what they were about.
Thank you in advance!

When I saw Hassan and Hussein in Hagia Sofia, I was confused about the two names as Shia symbols together with Sunni four Rashid Caliphs. Whey did this juxtaposition began in Sunni historiography?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hassan and Hussein are not important only for shia. All the Sunnis are respectful for them. Ehl-i Beyt (Family of the prophet) are sacred for Sunnis. You can see Hassan and Hussein's names in almost all of the mosques of Turkey.

Will Egypt return its position on the reception of Russians in the field of tourism
Relevant answer
Answer
Russia has decided to stop all flights to Egypt until the necessary flight safety conditions are met. Tourists who buy Egyptian tours are offered an alternative to take them to Turkey. Russian tourists also had problems before traveling to Turkey. The number of Russian tourists in Turkey has decreased very much. But these problems were partially overcome and the Russians started to go back to Turkey.
A similar process can be experienced in Egypt. The problems with Egypt will be overcome, but time is needed. Egypt made preparations to welcome Russian tourists; they took extra security precautions, set up armed guards in the hotels... But these are not words that are very compatible with tourism. I do not think there will be any improvement in a short time. In the short run it seems impossible. However, as before, people will be able to travel to Egypt again without worrying.
Political problems can create problems for tourism. However, as we have seen many examples in history, when the political problems are over, the problem ends with tourists. Russian tourists' trips to Egypt will be shaped according to political affiliation.

I'm interested in current research, anything written over the last century, and any books or articles by travelers in the 19th, early 18th century. I'm also interested in any information or sources that could help me understand the different approaches to this tradition of holy land pilgrimage between Greeks still living under Ottoman rule and those living in independent Greece after the Greek War of Independence.

I want to correct part of the story on my grandfather's trip to the Holy Land. Actually, he did the trip when he was 7 years old accompanied by his grandmother. It was a big group from his village that travelled together. The year was 1886.

Erika,
there is an even higher resolution coloring of the 1576 embassy on the Russian Wikipedia page. The caption lists the main people in the embassy and identifies them by their clothing, starting with (I'm following the original spelling) "Der Obriste abgesandte Knesch oder Fürst: Zachary Iwanwitsch Sugursky, hof Juncker und Stadthalter zum Weissen Sehe..." Hope this helps.
