Hi everyone,
ICU nursing staffing's impact on patient (and other) outcomes is well documented in the literature. Nonetheless, methods (e.g. Nursing activities score) have been criticized during the last decade for not including several aspects of the nurse's work besides bedside duties.
Currently, which would be the most valid approach /tool to objectively estimate nursing staffing?
Relevant answer
Answer
Cristobal,
it depends on what you are most interested in. There are scores and ways for assessing workload in bedside nursing that accounts for physical and cognitive workload. Look at work by Heather Tubbs-Cooley. Also, make sure you are looking at the right measures. As I’m sure you know, tools to assess staffing models are not the same as nursing workload. I have partnered with nurse scientists at Emory to look at a combination of metrics, but it also depends on the question you are asking. Hope this helps. Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss further

Is there any other databases that can be useful to search articles in nursing education?
Relevant answer
Answer
It will depend on your university library system, which scholarly databases have fulltext.
Likely ERIC will have fulltext and much the same as the other. ERIC may also have less known university journals and peer reviewed conferences.
When I was in the doctorate program, I found a lot of interesting papers in peer reviewed conference proceedings. Those can give you ideas of unique topics and or approaches to use.

Question
1 answer
Triage Decision Making inventory (TDMI) questionnaire 27 questions have three dimensions of cognitive abilities, experience and intuition, and in the study we want to use the 7-question questionnaire "acknowledges using intuition in nursing scale (AUINS)".
1- Is it possible to use the above two questionnaires simultaneously in the study and perform correlation measurement, considering that one of the dimensions of the TDMI questionnaire is intuition?
2- If it is not possible to use simultaneously and the possibility of communication, is it possible to remove the intuition dimension of the TDMI questionnaire? And how can this be done with reason and logic?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello,
Your question is a statistical correlation question about comparing two scales where both scales share a similar dimension. From a statistical viewpoint, I am not sure how to respond. However, from a nursing viewpoint, I believe these 2 scales are complementary and reinforcing. The AUINS scale values emotional awareness during a triage situation. Nurses often "feel" or are otherwise "triggered" to have apprehension or premotion about a patient's description, including what is not being said. In addition, nurses through multiple patient encounters, all encoded somewhere within the nurse, are able to connect on an unseen level (etherial) by some nurse-empaths, or at least pick up cues to aid triage assessment and allocation of resources. I'm thinking rather that separating and searching for a correlation, I think these 2 scales are complementary. A different study might be to look at outcomes in nursing cohort 1 (uses both scales) and nursing cohort 2 (that uses neither scale). Interesting questions! Patty

I would like to build a small, but somewhat nationally representative sample of graduate students in social work and nursing for an online survey. Will I be able to do so using Amazon's Mechanical Turk? (MTurk), or is the specificity of this recruitment criterion too narrow?
Also, is there a way to verify, such as requiring participants to upload their university registration status or transcript?
Relevant answer
Answer
Almost anybody may accomplish activities on the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) website using their own talents and on their own time. Must accomplish jobs and receive payment from Requesters, all you need is an Internet-connected computer device and to be at least 18 years old.
At one-tenth the expense of standard approaches, researchers can collect data from large enough samples to achieve considerable statistical power. The MTurk population is more representative of the general population than other online surveys and yields more accurate findings.
To begin a survey using MTurk, a researcher (referred to as a "Requester" in Amazon's parlance) creates an account (http://www.mturk.com), deposits funds into her account, and then posts a "job listing" using the MTurk Web interface that describes the Human Intelligence Task (HIT) to be completed and the compensation to be received.

Question
15 answers
Dear colleagues,
I'm running an exploratory study at a hospital, involving different groups of staff that come in contact with a patient; such as surgeons, anaesthetists, junior doctors (interns and HMOs), nurses, ward receptionists, interpreters and patient service assistants. Each focus group will be homogeneous to the field/job title of the staff. Group sizes will be between 4-6 participants, with a degree of flexibility, and staff who are interested to participated and cannot attend a focus group due to schedule difficulties (e.g. surgeons), will be offered one on one interviews.
I understand an exploratory study will continue until saturation is reached. But I need some literature to point me towards potential sample sizes to aim for (required for the ethic application).
Should I aim for 1 group in each field. Or should I aim to balance the sample sizes between each field (eg medical, nursing, other hospital staff)?
The literature that I've read has been inconsistent, suggesting anywhere between 1-10 groups may be enough.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Zahra, I would suggest starting from handbooks in the field, for example the (a little old but precise) Handbook for focus group research by T.L. Greenbaum edited by Sage. Technically 4-5 members would be a minigroup, 6-8 a focus group. However you can certainly find sources with different opinions.
Anyway as others have said it depends on your research question/objective. You use focus group if you are looking for novel responses that would necessarily emerge from discussion, extreme opinions and polarization, discourse analysis, online modification of opinions and beliefs, mediation and agreement, group conformity... not to speak about observation of non-verbal behavior. Also focus groups would have phases and activities/tasks to encourage discussion, not only questions. What you can find with a properly-conducted focus group is radically different from what you can find with one-to-one interviews. The worst you can do is to consider focus groups as a series of interviews with a number of people who incidentally are in the same room.
So if you already feel that some of your groups could be replaced by one-to-one interviews, maybe it is better for you to employ interviews only from the beginning. Otherwise you may find yourself with data collected by using very different methods which could not be properly analyzed toghether. Hope this helps. Bye!

Relevant answer
Answer
It has not been answered definitively. Yet, there are obvious effects in postnatal mice that were exposed to lactating mothers that in turn received TAM for certain time periods. It is not certain that TAM is passed through breast milk as it is in order to activate the CreERT2 system in neonates. My guess is that it should work.
Prolonged TAM administration will seize lactation in those mums.

Nursing is a profession which deals with many aspects of people's lives. Nurses are often faced with ethical problems and experience many conflicts between their professional oath. The influence of conscience on nurses has frequently been described but its impact on their practice has received less attention. During their daily practice, they need to quickly decide on one of the several competing options. Conscience i directs individuals towards non-maleficence and veracity and helps people understand their duties for coping with life as a valuable component of nursing practice which demands sensitivity, respect for human rights, and attentive and dignified care delivery. How to increase work conscience in nursing?

Many drugs, if taken by nursing mother, while she is breast feeding passes to the child through breast milk and have either beneficial, or in many cases toxic effect to the infant or child. That is the reason why some drugs are not given to nursing mothers. In the same, I am glad if I get information on how COVID-19 vaccine passes to milk and helps in vaccinating child or have harmful effect.

Hi,
At the beginning of each shift, how nurses distribute current patients in the unit?
According to my experience, there several factors that are considered such as if the patient is on ECMO, mechanically ventilated, on a particular isolation precaution...
Also, there are nursing to patient ratios as guidelines but their account for the number rather than specific features of the patient.
Any other criteria or methods?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Dear Siti
Potentially there are numerous topics you can go for but the current Corvid 19 pandemic does offer Haematologists opportunities to investigate various clinical aspects, manifestations and complications of this condition. You may want to choose a disease category first (BMT, acute leukaemia, chronic leukaemia, MPD, MDS, haemophilia, haemoglobinopathy, non-malignant cytopenia....). Then analyse the impact that Corvid 19 and lockdown have had on the presentations and management pathways of one of these categories. You can analyse the patient numbers (up or down), any difference in the way patients present to hospital (eg. more severe disease, significant complications), any unusual presentations, any notable differences in laboratory parameters (more marked cytopenia, biochemical disturbances etc), differences in clinical outcome (morbidity and mortality).
I think that should keep you busy.
Good luck with your thesis.

also i need sample Nursing report in rehabilitation hospital .
thanks a lot
Relevant answer
Answer
Avoid ambiguous wording that may confuse the next nurse when writing your end-of-shift study. Filling the end-of-shift report with any piece of relevant information relating to the condition of the patient is vital. Checking the end-of-shift report directly with the patient, his or her accompanying family members. Even though bedside reporting is not performed before each shift, many nurses have concerns about the end-of-shift report.

Since I'm interested in Conceptual Analysis, I've been searching for work making use of this "research method". What surprised me is that almost half of the papers I found are from the field/discipline of Nursing Studies/Research. Considering that arguably all scientific fields/disciplines (sociology, psychology, mathematics, engineering, linguistics, law, economics, physics, philosophy, medicine, etc.) could equally employ Conceptual Analysis, can anyone explain to me the special connection there seems to be between Nursing Studies/Research and Conceptual Analysis? Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Etienne,
There will be a few reasons for this - such as a high proportion of nursing research that is what I call 'naval-gazing' research i.e. trying to make sense of 'abstract' things and 'what is the nature of things'. There may be multiple terms for these 'issues' and those terms are often used interchangeably/incorrectly. Concept analysis is designed to bring clarity to this prevelant issue in nursing. Of course, it isn't just unique to nursing though - which is why you will see it with other disciplines.
Another reason is that most of the seminal frameworks i.e. Morse, Rodgers, Walker and Avant, Hupcey etc were developed by nurses.
A further reason, and one that some might not like me saying, is that it can be deemed as 'easier' research compared to other methodologies and yet still publishable. The data for concept analysis is narrative data derived from the existing literature. It does not require sampling and setting techniques, the recruitment of participants, ethics approval - nor data collection in the physical clinical field.

Dear Professor Maria Müller-Staub
Greetings and Regards
I am a Ph.D. Nursing Student in Iran
I am interested in promoting the nursing profession
Unfortunately, the nursing profession in Iran is very weak, nursing care is traditionally done.
Nursing documentation, satisfaction, and interaction of the patient-nurse is very weak.
The nursing process in Iran is only in the form of research proposals.
In the first step in promoting nursing, we did an extensive study to identify of the implementation strategies the nursing process in different countries and to investigate the causes of non-implementation of the nursing process in developing countries. And the result of this extensive study is a review article entitled "Barriers to non-implementation of the nursing process in developing countries: A narrative review".
Given your vast background in this area, please help me in editing the article in terms of content and translation from you as an author.
Thanks & Regards

Teaching Psychomotor skills constitute a significant element in undergraduate nursing education.
Psychomotor skills training for nursing students involves many steps. They are lecture-demonstration, simulation practice, followed by practice in clinical settings to gain competency in psychomotor skills. However, during this COVID 19 pandemic nursing students, especially beginners in the nursing programs, are restricted from clinical practice for the time being due to safety concerns. Therefore, Academicians are finding it challenging to integrate theory to practice, be in a simulated laboratory setting, or real-time practice in the clinical areas. The effectiveness of virtual psychomotor skill training is yet to be researched in our local contexts, especially from the students' point of view.

For quality assessment of observational studies, as done in a systematic review, a number of scales exist. The major ones are ROBINS-I, Newcastle Ottawa Scale, and Appraisal Tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS).
1. Which of these is best validated and the most widely used?
2. Should there be a field-specific preference for either of these (for instance, medicine vs nursing vs psychology)?
Relevant answer
Answer
Any validated tool can be used but I personally believe that Newcastle Ottawa Scale is quite handy for observational studies.
