I have recently entered the world of special education. I home-school my five-year-old, that's how bad I think the students are getting pushed aside. My son has ADHD and ASD and last year was his first day at Pre-K. I need to mention that, I contacted the school months prior to advise that my son showed signs of Autism and ADHD. We did not have a diagnosis yet. I knew he would have trouble with his behavior. My son's way of acclimating is to touch, explore, and feel a new place before becoming comfortable. He did not know that this was so frowned upon. He struggles with direction and needs constant supervision. I was called the second day by the Assistant principal to go to the school. Long story short, the diagnostician's implication to remove my son during the initial evaluation waiting period for special education was the beginning of a long and downhill journey with EPISD.
Relevant answer
Answer
To determine whether students in self-contained Special Education classrooms are receiving an equitable education, it is important to assess the extent to which their needs are being met and whether they have access to a well-rounded education that prepares them for future success. This often involves evaluations by educational authorities, advocacy organizations, and oversight agencies.

Argumentos a favor:

Relevant answer
Answer
I have followed very carefully the development of your conversation, which I find marvellous. Certainly, the problem of the nature of unobservables in physics involves a large number of questions: objectivity in science, the problem of observation, the problem of measurement, the subjectivity-objectivity dichotomy, the nature and influence of mathematical structures on our description of the real world, the problem of the conceptual framework on physical theory and experiments, etc.
Reichenbach argued that our representations of reality are laden with "theory." The history of philosophy and philosophy of science until today may even be considered as a struggle to grasp theory-ladenness in human knowledge. The same may be said about the physical sciences, where the conceptual framework of mathematics has been the master. I am of the opinion that mathematical structures have been used so mindlessly in physics that too many unobservables and theoretical entities were created merely on the strength of the mathematics. As if they said: ‘The mathematics requires it, hence, this unobservable and this theoretical entity is necessary, whether it exists or not!’ My work questions this attitude, by using Husserl and other thinkers.
Boguslaw Stec, I think you are in tune with this line of argument. Like Hans Grelland, for whom mathematical structures influence our descriptions of reality. He also makes an analysis of how our limited language does not allow further progress in our postulations in science. But, if the unobservables are then only "theoretical entities" built to give internal consistency to our theories, then how is it possible that we can empirically "evidence" the existence of the unobservables which are in harmony with our mathematical conceptions? This is yet another area in which I have spent a long time researching, including in my doctoral dissertation. My answers are not only physical. I suggest also a “Scientific Realist Processualism” (in my PhD dissertation) that attempts to identify the ways to differentiate between unobservables and theoretical entities in physical sciences. I believe this may later be extended to the social sciences too.
Of course, facing this question, it could be argued that our detections in physical cosmology respond not to direct observation but rather to the use of scientific and technological instruments which too, by the way, is subscribed to our "eyes loaded with theory".
However, this argument is confronted with another, but simple, question: Is it not true that physics has been successful in its predictions? While it is true that we cannot deny the influence of our mental and/or theoretical representations due rightly to both language and our mathematical preconceptions, the unobservables in many cases have provided evidence of their existence – through the right instrumentation that obeys the right aspects of theory.
Such is the case, for example, of the neutrino. Postulated as a "theoretical particle", its existence was evidenced, and the prediction in particle physics has shown and until today supported the existence of neutrinos.
Similarly, the question of dark matter and dark energy. We are precisely at one of the high points within physical cosmology that has challenged the standard ΛCDM model, and which, on the other hand, has opened the possibility of postulating the ΛMOF cosmological model. However, both for physical cosmology and for the philosophy of physics, the question about the existence (or not) of dark matter/energy is an open matter. Assuming (on my part) a vertical position in this regard seems risky to me.
I am of the following opinion about the existence of unobservables. As long as their existence can be "detected", in the sense of their being susceptible to future instrumentation, I may consider, for the time being and perhaps as a permanent interim solution, that the Weylian vision about the symmetry of the world and reality could shed light on this blind spot.
Assuming that all our descriptions, and even more, indirect detections or observations (due to scientific-technological instrumentation) in many cases "collapse" our orderly descriptions, nevertheless, the necessity to account for a symmetry of reality still needs to be understood and considered. Perhaps this is in tune with Boguslaw Stec where he supported the necessary consideration of the ideas of Spinoza or Plato (Penrose also points in this direction). But it is also in harmony with André Michaud when he argued that physics has given objective and tangible results.
So, is there a meeting point? I believe that the example of symmetry breaking could shed some light on this question. But in effect what is symmetry breaking? When the unification between the electromagnetic force and the weak nuclear force (1/m2) was established, it was observed that the photon did not comply with the conservation principles when violating F=1/m2 and then the so-called "symmetry breaking" is assumed to have occurred. But this is nothing more than conceiving another level of symmetry. In this way, every time we talk about a symmetry breaking, what we are talking about in the name of symmetry are (1) the necessary rupture in our way of describing and (2) the need to move on to understanding (describing) reality in more complex forms. These descriptions must always respond to an order (principles of conservation).
In the search for this more complex form of understanding, entities appear (which were inconceivable until then, and hence are called "unobservable"). These entities provide the necessary internal consistency in the theory. Thus, in the example of electroweak unification and symmetry breaking, the Higgs Boson and the so-called Higgs Fields were postulated.
Of course, Boguslaw Stec could object to me by saying that the detection of the Higgs boson was carried out in a controlled manner and that this demonstrates his point of view. And he will be right about it. However, controlled or not, the boson exists. Undoubtedly, this leads us to the problem of the observational question in physical cosmology and in particle physics: Do we really observe objectively? Is "detect" really "observe"? Will we not be seeing with the "loaded eyes" of theory" as Reichenbach maintained? The debate opens up again.
But not everything is "dark" in the face of the unobservable. Recently, a certain research initiative (on the hippocampus) in neuroscience (2014) obtained the renowned Nobel for its findings in terms of time and space. This opens a new horizon. SPACE AND TIME CEASED TO BELONG TO THE GROUP OF UNOBSERVABLES. According to the current empirical evidence in neuroscience, space and time are cognitive conditions, that is, they are in the subject. So, our Newtonian representations (even physical ones "represent" space-time Newtonian-style despite Einstein's theory) break down. There is no "space" or "time" outside the subject. They are in the subject. So, this gives a point in favor of Galileo, Kant and Husserl. In this sense, following neuroscience, we would already have a clear definition of space and time, but not of energy and matter. It seems that studying the unobservables involves attending to these two foundational conceptions: matter and energy. Not just dark matter and dark energy, but in all its general aspect.
So, the question of unobservables is much more complex than we think. Of course, I do not intend to give a definitive answer to the problem, but analyzing it together with André Michaud and Boguslaw Stec sheds light on the question. I am pleased with the discussion, among other things, because few researchers take up the challenge of studying this issue, despite the enormous importance it involves. I believe that many researchers simply do not delve into this due to the demands put on the researchers.
I await your comments.

Views, as a partial view of the past compatible with the postulate that all that exists is the partial view of the past, is a concept that Smolin borrowed from Bergson to promote his "real time" project and also contribute to main issues in physics such as quantum gravity, relativist quantum mechanics and other.
It is a smart choice because it is highly aligned to a "real time" i.e. time as active, creating new events in contrast to mathematical or memory of the past conception that some claim is the main one in physics. It is smart because it coincides best to Bergsonian ideas which are the best in supporting such a time view. Smolin said he believed in real time for 2 reasons: time as fundamental does not fit the quantum gravity projects which he has top knowledge; second because his newborn son showed signs of understanding time as "real" from interactions with him and talked about the past.
The problem is that even though Smolin used the idea to promote the projects such as 1) showing that relativistic point particle dynamics and non relativistic quantum mechanics emerge using this concept;
2) having proposed s completion of GR and Q Theory using the causal theory of view of views
his view-based theories are not supplementing the main aims is physics such as control, new predictions, explanation, utility. They just contribute to the theoretical problems but have high "opportunity cost" in not endorsing at least in alternative routes basic useful traits of physics. It is a similar problem with relativity but there it is not so harsh and the disparency from Newtonian is not so large (view is not compatible with any concept is physics and that's why physicists do not endorse it. Even his collaborator Marina Cortez seems to have abandoned the project.)
Relevant answer
Answer
Views is also an athropocentric concept because it is a human concept adopted for scientific not a geometrical or physical connotations-first like normal physical concepts and also subtle. It is difficult to comprehend how it works in absense of space, which Smolin claims is possible.
He asserts we live in a varietey maximizing universe in which the fundamental dynamics is based on an action whose potential energy is proportional to the variety, which is a measure of the diversity of the views of the events.
Further insights about "Views":
- They are used to replace measures of distance, measured according to a fixed metric, qab, in background dependent formulations of physics, with the measures of differences between views.
- The potential energy measures the diversity of views of events acausally related to each other, whereas the kinetic energy measures the change in views between causally closely related events
- We only compare views one causal step apart,

Radiogenic daughter products! Back to the Future lead lead age dates. There is way way too much radiogenic lead in Upper Mississippi Valley deposits of NW Illinois. Reports suggest the percentage of radiogenic lead is on the order of 50% at least locally!
Radon gas is heavy and short lived and should not go far from its source and should leave a "trackway". I enclose an article describing the unusual and erratic ratio of radiogenic daughter products and a graph.
The other expected daughter products in the decay chain are not present or at least not reported.
So....where did all the radon come from...some kind of S type granite?
I am dubious of it's being leached off a granite. In Colorado the Silverplume Granite is relatively "hot". It is easy to peg a scintillometer here and there...likely from "shrockingerite" or some relatively mobile uraniferous constituent. Furthermore, in Colorado there are obvious signs of the radioactive daughter products between the rimming granite outcrops and a mined uranium roll front deposit at Tallahassee Creek at the edge of South Park. I know it because I drilled some radon springs in South Park long ago. But...there seem to be no such radiogenic trails between granites in the Wisconsin/Ashton Arch, see below, and the abundant J type lead of the historic Galena mining district of NW Illinois.
The paragenetic studies are predicated on a hydrothermal process for galena deposition. I think there is more to the story.
See below.
I show a recent find of galena megacrystals from a discovery site in pockets located at the top of the Ordovician Galena Group and the base of the Ordovician Maquoketa bounding the Ordovician at the proverbial GICE interval See stratigraphic diagram.
There may have been a strong Radon event of some kind that caused the J-type lead but how does that fit into the conventional depositional model described below dated 1986.
Maybe it's from the deeper "k-bentonites" at the base of the Galena near the top of the Decorah. I attach an article from 1996 from GSA for your convenience. The multiple K-bentonites are at or near the base of the Galena Group. That's pretty far but it's not unreasonable to postulate fracture flow of some kind...at the proposed date of zinc mineralization...roughly 250my ago.
Has anyone else considered the problem of anomalous radiogenic lead in UMV deposits. If the source is merely K-bentonite...it should be widespread. But..I understand J-type lead is relatively localized...(getting its name from Joplin Missouri and presenting itself most abundantly in Jo Daviess Co. Illinois).

Relevant answer
Answer

Provide me the detail mathematical calculation for the measurement of uranium, thorium and potassium with their daughter progenies.
Relevant answer
Answer
The solution is not a mathematical formula!
The question can be approached by two ways:
a) experimental: prepare homogenous standards having the same density and geometry as your samples, #1 material with low K,Th,U content, #2 same as #1 with known amount of K added, #3 same as #1 with known amount of Th added ,and #4 same as #1 with known amount of U added.
From the differences between measurements #N-#1 you may deduce the contribution of each of the three elements to the spectrum and, more specifically, the contribution of each of them to three regions of interest corresponding to strong peaks of each element, usually 1.46 MeV for 40K, 2.61 MeV for Tl208 (progeny of Th) and 609 keV for Bi214 (progeny of U), assuming secular equilibrium in Th and U families, or at least the same disequilibrium conditions in sample and standards.
It is then possible to calculate a matrix relating the measurements in the 3 ROIs to the three activities.
b) Monte Carlo simulation. The NaI detector is usually quite simple and can be simulated with a good accuracy. Experimental measurements are still necessary to evaluate the gaussian broadening of the peaks at the different energies, and an experimental validation of the MC model is always desirable.

Hi all,
I'm currently working with PE and need to determine the Mw-Distribution of my samples.
The system that I am working with right now is the Tosoh EcoSEC HLC-8321GPC/HT with an RI detector and a single TSKgel GPC column. The samples are dissolved with 1,2,4-TCB at the concentration of 2mg/mL at 120°C and run at 140°C with a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, injection quantitiy 300 microL.
The results came back were conflicting (see the chromatograph and the molecular weight distribution below). The polarity seems to be negative and the logM curve seems to be smaller than that given by the manufacturer and bimodal (highly unlikely).
Has anyone had this problem before? Do you know what parameters I can manipulate to get the real result?
Since the tubing that we are using for our HT-GPC can only go to 140°C, that is maximum temperature I can go to running it and 2mg/mL is also our maximum concentration allowed.
If anyone can help me with this, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks a lot!

I think they are negative because the refraction index of you PE is lower than your solvent. As far a bimolar distribution, maybe you have developed a better method than the manufacturer.

Family Systems Theory by Murray Bowen is a specific approach which takes familial functioning into account. I am interested in how the concepts present in it will translate into a South Asian (or, to be more precise, the collectivistic framework of Pakistan) context? For instance, Bowen's theory is based on an understanding of nuclear family systems but how would it apply in the case of a joint family? In a culture where parents might be dependent on the views of the community in terms of bringing up children, how would Bowen's theories translate exactly (for instance, if they have a disabled child)? For example, what is the difference between Bowen's concepts of relationships between generations and the kinds that might emerge owing to different generations living under the same roof and with their extended family members as well?
Let's say, for instance, that it is not merely parents but also other members of the family such as extended family members or grandparents who either counsel children on "appropriate conduct" or even express disapproval and view it as appropriate behavior culturally. How do Murray's concepts such as "Differentiation" change in a cultural sense in that case just as one example out of many possible ones? In a culture where "adulthood" and transition towards it might exist in a legal sense but might not be necessarily viewed as "important" even for parental figures (for instance, even if children cross the age of 18, parents do not try to treat their children as "adults"), how would Bowen's concepts change? I am not talking in terms of applying these concepts therapeutically, but, in terms of how they might be applicable in a conceptual sense.

Bowen is from Pittsburgh which is not far where I reside. I am quite familiar with his ides.
Family is a crucial social unit. The subsystems are: sibling, parental and marital.
Siblings can have ready access to the parental subsystem but not the marital.
This is triangulation and the clinician must assist the couple to reduce it.

Hi,
i want to analyze mothers-daughters data. i have data gathered for mothers and related daughters.
For each women, i have a separate line (case) and an identifier of whether she is a mother/daughter and a serial number of the dyad.
My questions are:
is this the best way to manage the data? (separate cases for each women?)
Which tests in SPSS can i run to compare these "paired" dyads if they are managed as separate cases?
Do all dyad be represented in a single line (case) ? this would be easyer?

Often a researcher relies on external instruments or the body of data generated by a particular culture. Is it enough to use the established criteria to recognize and validate a publication, a conduct, society, culture or spirituality as good? Good, understood as valid, healthy on a universal and lasting level. The constructive dialogue is necessary for the consolidation of a reality, but what if those who make up this dialogue do not have the right vision in themselves? Examples of this are cultural and research groups that have not maintained a correct ethical and spiritual basis (Eugenics, Cruel research with animals, violent historical periods, etc.). Is it necessary to review the value system itself not as a basis of beliefs without as a guide to behavior in daily practice?

Hace falta.

Question

Hello everyone,
I am about to do my PhD candidacy exam, and one of the evaluators raised an important point of the genotyping malaria project. Basically, in the malaria field it is very common to genotype different strains by using length markers or just polymorphic markers of the same size. The number of different variations of size or SNPs will determine the number of different clones found in a human host infected with malaria. MOI is define as 'multiplicity of infection' and it basically tells you this number of clones found in an individual. When looking at publications, it is very common to see a MOI of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and even 6. However, one of my PhD examiners asked this question:
"How is it possible to have 1 to 6 genotypes of malaria, when its genome is 23'000,000 bases, and it can populate the human host to 1x10^12 cells?"
Since then I am struggling with it and I have narrowed down some evidence to answer this question... In the pathogenesis of malaria, it is common to see a few bottlenecks of transmission. When a mosquito inoculates a human host with the plasmodium parasite, between 10 to 200 circumsporozoites will make it to the liver. After an incubation period of 7 to 10 days, each circumsporozoite will release 30,000 daughter cells into the bloodstream. Each cell will replicate into 8-32 times inside a red blood cell (RBC). So in theory, all of these cells should be clones of the parent cells. However that is not the case given that the average mutation rate of malaria is 4x10e-10 base substitutions per mitosis. How can I answer this question?
In practice is common to see the use of polymorphic genes with a expected heterozygosity close to 1.0, that would yield as many genotype retrievals as possible, and those genes typically vary in size of 300 to 500 base pairs. Some people use a panel of microsatellites to determine these genotypes.
Am I missing a key concept here?
Thanks everyone!
Relevant answer
Answer
Though mutation rates are high, not all of them need to be fit. The human body puts forward a very impressive immune defense system, so a majority of mutants that are not very efficient will get weeded out. Added to this, the drug selection pressure will also remove unfit mutants. Therefore, of all the variants only a handful of sucessful genotypes can be isolated.

A human child at age 2 needs around 5 instances of a car to be able to identify it with reasonable accuracy regardless of color, make, etc. When my son was 2, he was able to identify trams and trains, even though he had seen just a few. Since he was usually confusing one with each other, apparently his neural network was not trained enough, but still.
What is it that artificial neural networks are missing that prevent them from being able to learn way quicker? Is transfer learning an answer?
Relevant answer
Answer
As you mentioned a child of age 2 can learn from a few instances because he/she has already learned many other things. An infant can't learn to identify a car even with 1000 examples.
And for artificial neural networks, It depends on how deep a neural network is, e.g., the accuracy of a neural network with only one hidden layer plateaus after a relatively small number of training examples(of course not five as you already know). In contrast, a deep neural network would continue to learn with more data.
I think what a child sees is a 3-dimensional representation of an object. However, for ANN a dataset often is represented flattened 2-dimensional format.

Just as I was finishing my degree, both of my children enrolled in Montclair State and Michael became their undergraduate adviser. They also took undergraduate classes with some of the same faculty as I had for graduate classes.
I have been assisting a PhD candidate with her research and she was also the laboratory instructor in their program. (Does that make me my own Grandfather?)
In high schools Academic Grandchildren are quite common.
How common are Academic Grandchildren at the post-secondary level and do you think they are more or less common in the STEM fields?
Thank you

Dear Kevin,
Having academic grandchildren is a common experience among long academic career professors. I know some of my collegues who are grand-grand academicien fathers. This phenomenon is wide spread during the last few decades mainly because of the widespead of higher education among most socioeconomic classes of the society, beside other factors.
It is a good research topic.
Gros luck

My daughter is doing a remodeling project and is concerned about silica dust in ceramic tile/grout work for their new baby. What are the risks and what precautions should she take? In researching the web, it seems it's more for the workers than the homeowner. Is this true? Is a small amount of exposure ok? Thanks for your help!
