If possible, I'm looking for this information in the context of K-12 public education, but any public sector information regarding this subject would be a helpful starting point.  I have had a very difficult time finding any research that has surveyed or discussed how ancillary services such as maintenance, finance or procurement perceive their role as comprising a meaningful part of the whole organization, and that they have a part to play in the delivery of its mission.
Thanks kindly for your help.

Thank you so much, Patricia. I paid a visit to your website...What a wealth of information you have published over the years:  the philosophy you articulated there resonated with me deeply.
I am currently working on framing research questions, but at the heart of it all is that in these departments are people who have described feeling orphaned, forgotten, and that their work drifts from day to day in a miasma of meaninglessness.
I am very grateful for this opportunity to have connected with you, and appreciate also being able to email you with questions as I proceed with this research.

If anyone has knowledge of individuals or entities that have existing studies on work allocation portals and would grant em permission to use one or two of them, that will greatly help my research.

Review of Total institutions and reinvented identities.
By Bloor, Michael
Qualitative Research, Vol 13(3), Jun 2013, 385-386.
Reviews the book, Total Institutions and Reinvented Identities by Susie Scott (2011). Scott shifts the reader's attention from Total Institutions to Reinventive Institutions, more characteristic of late modernity and defined as 'material, discursive or symbolic structure[s] in which voluntary members actively seek to cultivate a new social identity, role or status. This is interpreted positively as a process of reinvention, self-improvement or transformation'. She carefully picks her way around the traditional (and not wholly deserved) criticisms of Goffman's approach to power, renewed by more recent analyses of Foucauldian governmentality in psy communities, arguing that those who exhibit willing compliance should not be dismissed as cultural dopes or falsely conscious. The scholarship is lightly worn with a minimum of Urry-esque abstractions, and if Palgrave Macmillan would bring out a paperback edition, it could even be a resource book for a third-year undergraduate course. As it is, it will be read with interest by symbolic interactionists and will hopefully inform a new generation of ethnographic studies of institutions. I am researching the ethics of a specific non-profit foundation. I'm especially concerned with issues of self interest. I'm curious if there are any "rules" to measure this, such as the percentage a nonprofit spends on salary, "members only" benefits, vs. benefits related to the public good. I'm happy to discuss details via a direct message.

All throughout literature, the framework for measuring the performance of value creation has been fragmented and less coherent as for the marketing sector. What could be the underlining reasons for these?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Luka,
Here are some points you might find interesting?
You be aware that NPOs or TSOs in addition to profit have additional 'bottom' lines in relation to social and environmental issues. More technically difficult to 'account' for and report (especially impact/value).
Therefore as mission oriented organisations, in defining social value, they firstly must construct their mission in relation to their stakeholders expectations, needs, values and evaluation of performance. Therefore must also align the NPO/TSO capabilities, objectives and mission accordingly. These represent a resource issue especially for the smaller NPO/TSO.
Another barrier is the presence/advantage of commercial enterprises within the sector which through their expertise can 'crowd out' local NPO/TSO organisations. The passing of Public Service (Social value) Act 2012, places the onus on the commissioning body to ensure that  'best value' remains in the community. This highlights the 'age' and challenges facing this sector and organisations operating within it.
All the Best
Rob

There are a number of non profit organizations in developing countries seeking to bring solutions for problems in health care These organizations often come with well trained practitioners with specialized skills and knowledge. With sustainability and longevity in mind, how do the local health care practitioners interact with their visiting colleagues? Does a transfer of knowledge occur? Are local practitioners often inspired to seek to acquire more knowledge in these specializations or perhaps alter their current methods of diagnosis andtreatment? Or do the benefits of the visiting practitioner's skills and knowledge lost, or abandoned when the visitors leave?
Relevant answer
Answer
The outcomes obviously vary depending on the work settings, rules, personnels, & prior experiences. It can go either ways. Some well-organised institutions have already formulated interaction code for physicians` interactions.

My review of the volunteerism literature, and especially the empirical studies, leads me to conclude that most studies appear to fall into one of two camps:
  • Those that focus on volunteer behavior relative to a single organization, versus
  • Those that investigate volunteer behavior in aggregate, e.g., number of hours volunteered overall.
I am interested in investigating how many organizations are supported, how one's volunteer hours are divided among those organizations, and the underlying decision process.

 Thanks Christopher & Jo,
I will certainly look into the articles you've mentioned and appreciate the advice you have provided.  I am in the process of lining up interviews with volunteers from a local public radio station as the next step in my research on this topic.
I am realizing that the volunteerism literature is studied from the perspectives of so many disciplines that it is all too easy to miss important studies that may have been published in journals that are common outlets for particular disciplines, but not well known to others from different fields.
Regards,
Rod.

I am using the MLQ (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire) in a study on (European) nonprofit leaders. Since self- and other-ratings differ from the norms provided by the MLQ manual, I would like to check if this may be related to the sample's nonprofit background. Could you let me know about any nonprofit norms, suggestions on where/how to search for them or values (means and SDs) you found in a study carried out with the MLQ in the nonprofit sector?
Relevant answer
Answer
The Volunteer administrators that exhibit transactional leadership styles as recorded by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) additionally value the potential of retiring Baby Boomers as possible volunteers for nonprofit organizations.
MLQ is related to the sample's nonprofit sector. Many of the references are there.

Hey Sarah, I like the following article, because it is practical AND it gives a broad overview of possible structures, which makes it in my opinion also more relevant from a theoretical point of view. Whether it is relevant for you depends of course on what your aim is (?). Anyways, I hope this suggestion is useful:
