Nitroglycerin - Science topic

A volatile vasodilator which relieves ANGINA PECTORIS by stimulating GUANYLATE CYCLASE and lowering cytosolic calcium. It is also sometimes used for TOCOLYSIS and explosives.

In the following tutorial, I made nitroglycerin for fun (only a few drops) and detonated it:
How can it be stabilized, such as in dynamite?
Relevant answer
Answer
Stabilization is made in the process of washings with water and sodium carbonate solutions. NG is quite safe in the emulsion with water, as it is after the synthesis and washings. When it separates it is much more dangerous and I wouldn't recommend storing for a prolonged period of time.
Dynamites have lower sensitivity because NG content is low and the ester is absorbed in other solid ingredients. However, it doesn't mean they have a long shelf life, they are meant to be used soon after the production.

Hello
Nitrooxy group (nitrate esters) is used in the preparation of vasodilators.
The use of silver nitrate to convert alkyl halides to nitrate esters is very common.
A. McKillop & M. E. Ford used mercury nitrate in organic media, but not repeated by someone else.
Can other nitrate salts be used to convert halides to nitrate esters?
Thanks all.

Hello Mr.Grice
Some good leaving groups like tosylate ,tms ,.. are good.(base on reported works)
But halids are relatively inert in some reactions .
Use of I as leaving group in allylic position is a Conventional method but problem is cost.
Nucleophilc replacement of NO3/X since Hughes & Ingold is Well known but other cations participation or catalysis is unkown...

We at NIOC EXP are going to run a 3D seismic project over a large area dominated by shallow-water ponds and swamps (with water depths ranging from zero to merely 1 m). Due to environmental restrictions, we are unlikely to be allowed for using explosive seismic source (dynamite) and are just researching for alternative seismic sources (i.e. shallow-water EM Pulse, etc.). Any idea or contact information of respective companies/experts?

The efficacy of somatriptan in TNG- induced headache?
Headache following nitroglycerine is common finding in most hypertensive patients specially in migraine cases. Somatriptan is used in this cases... I want to know the efficacy of somatriptan in this type of headache and also other treatment suggestion for decreasing it.
There are several aspects that I would like to comment upon:
1. You cannot treat hypertension-NTG linked headache or hypertension-NTG-migraine properly without understanding the mechanism (see attached file).
2. Sumatriptan is cautioned in hypertensive cases or in clinical situations with established or suspected cardiovascular risk.
3. Hypertension should be treated primarily.
4. Beta-blockers should be used for predominantly systolic hypertension, despite the International recommendations (see attached file).
5. For emergencies, metoclopramide might be a better option -- caution: side-effects (see attached file).
Best wishes,

I am now in charge of the surgical ICU; I have many new patients transferred to my unit with two drugs to raise the blood pressure, for me, I am not quite comfortable with that because it endangers my patients to severe metabolic acidosis despite the maintained blood pressure. I would prefer either nitroglycerin or dobutamine combined with noradrenaline

Currently the use of nitric oxide, inhaled iloprost or IV Epoprostenol are recommended. Is there a comparative study or "gold Standard "?
Relevant answer
Answer
I do not know a gold standard. However, we were using ilomedin (iloprost) intravenously in increasing concentration during right heart cath to assess a response on TPG/PVR before listing patients for cardiac transplantation. If they respond well and TPG decreases during iloprost infusion the patient could be listed. Yet, I know from other centres who treat patients with bosentan p.o. for 6 month before they are re-evaluated for heart transplantation
