Question

The political participation of the Kirat Rai community in Nepal has evolved significantly over time:
Historical Context
Historically, the Kirat Rai people, like many indigenous groups in Nepal, had limited political representation and influence. During the monarchy and the early years of the democratic movement, their participation in national politics was minimal. The centralization of power and the dominance of certain ethnic groups often marginalized the Kirat Rai and other indigenous communities.
Recent Developments
In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the political engagement and representation of the Kirat Rai community:
  1. Constitutional Recognition: The new constitution of Nepal, adopted in 2015, recognizes the rights of indigenous peoples, including the Kirat Rai. This has provided a legal framework for greater political participation and representation.
  2. Political Representation: Members of the Kirat Rai community have increasingly been elected to local, provincial, and national government positions. This includes representation in the federal parliament and various provincial assemblies.
  3. Indigenous Movements: Organizations like the Kirat Rai Yayokkha have been instrumental in advocating for the rights and representation of the Rai people. These movements have played a crucial role in raising awareness and pushing for political inclusion.
  4. Local Governance: With the implementation of federalism in Nepal, there has been a decentralization of power, allowing for greater local governance. This has enabled the Kirat Rai community to have more influence in local decision-making processes.
Current Challenges
Despite these advancements, challenges remain:
  • Underrepresentation: While there has been progress, the Kirat Rai community is still underrepresented in higher levels of government and key decision-making positions.
  • Socioeconomic Barriers: Economic and educational disparities continue to hinder full political participation for many in the community.
The journey towards equitable political representation for the Kirat Rai and other indigenous communities in Nepal is ongoing, with continued efforts needed to address these challenges and ensure inclusive governance.

blue tea from butterfly pea plant
Relevant answer
Answer
The blue tea market in Nepal is experiencing a period of growth and recognition, particularly within the broader context of the Nepali tea industry. Blue tea, often made from butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea), is gaining attention for its unique color and potential health benefits.Nepali tea, including blue tea, is part of a burgeoning tea culture that has seen increased interest both locally and internationally. For example, Nepal recently garnered significant acclaim at the 2024 World Tea Expo, highlighting the quality of its tea products [❞].Despite challenges such as issues with fertilizer supply, irrigation infrastructure, and export barriers, the industry is pushing forward with efforts to diversify its markets. For instance, there has been a notable increase in tea exports to China, which now offers zero-tariff treatment on many Nepali products, including tea [❞] [❞].Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to boost domestic consumption and market presence, as seen in tea exhibitions and promotional campaigns [❞]. This focus on both international expansion and local market strengthening is crucial for the sustainable growth of the blue tea market in Nepal.

I am using a multi-stage sampling technique for my study in Kathmandu district, Nepal, which consists of 1 metropolitan city and 10 Municipality. I have randomly selected Kathmandu metropolitan city (KMC) (due to budget and logistic constraints). KMC further consists of 32 wards of which I have selected one Ward (No.16) randomly (resource constraints).
My sample size is around 437, calculated using Taro Yamane formula. However, I do not have the list of households in Ward #16. In such a situation, which sampling technique will be appropriate.
If cluster sampling is to be used, how should the clusters be made as the clusters would not be homogeneous?
Relevant answer
Answer
Sure, you can conduct using Area Sampling or Cluster Sampling:
Steps
1. Define the study Area - this is geographical boundaries of your study area.
2. Divide the Area into Clusters e.g city blocks, streets, neighborhoods, based on the size and nature of your study area.

Your study is focussed on small internal grid interconneted to very large external grid. Exact Modelling of that very large external grid connected to your small internal grid is not feasible as the data of that very large external grid is not available or very complex. I want to do a cosmology research project for my physics undergraduate course. What is the availability of the data for such topics for a student staying in Nepal? Please kindly help me with suitable advice, I will acknowledge that.
Relevant answer
Answer
A lot of people will respond with search engine answers and such; which is not your question. Your question is the availability of DATA. That is really tough. If you are studying at MIT, you will have no greater access to raw data that is used to generate papers than if you are living in isolation on the South Pole.
Researchers are extremely reluctant to share Data, and requests for raw data that was used to generate some research paper will go with zero-reply, no acknowledgement whatsoever. This is because, and as much as it sounds so bold and brash to say so, is true, the raw data rarely supports the research hypotheses in the published literature.
Most 'Data' is creatively selective. For instance, I want to support my Big Theory that the universe expansion is 'accelerating' by choosing perhaps 65 supernovae out of a data-pool of billions and 70 galaxies out of a data-pool of trillions. You load everything into Excel, sort by range, and cherry-pick those supernova and galaxies that support your Big Theory. That, already happened.

In Nepal, there is a term called ' Brahmanism' which is considered to be an identity of the community of Brahman. No Brahman has yet accepted the concept of Brahmanism neither claim as an identity.
Thus, it is created outside of the community of Brahman and imposed to them as their identity.
Brahman are also called Khas-Arya and this term is written in the Constitution of Nepal which also seems baseless. Khas and Arya are different entities.
There are ethnic groups in Nepal which are created against the community of Khas-Arya. Khas-Arya community which was never owned and entertained - is constructed at outside of the community in order to validate other ethnic groups.

I am thinking about the future fuel system. and I think hydrogen fuel is best for the future power system. now days all of us interest electric vehicles(EV). EV has one problem that is, the charging system. To charge those batteries all country have to update the power grid. some country update the power system.
but is that all???
we are fully dependent on batteries. all of electric product now control by batteries. now renewable energy also store by batteries. But the batteries have life time. after that recycle the batteries. but It not so easy process. some country doesn't have any recycle system like Bangladesh, india, nepal, pakistan, etc.
So I think all of us should work in hydrogen fuel. It is 100% environment friendly.
Am I right or wrong????
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Sonat Ghosh,
Yes, I also think along the same lines as you. Hydrogen fuel is the future of both motoring, road system communication and energy supply for buildings, businesses, etc. It is the most clean, pro-environmental and pro-climate energy source. On the other hand, it is essential to improve the technology for recycling used batteries, expanding and modernising electricity grids, building hydrogen production facilities powered by electricity from other types of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or other energy. This issue is particularly important in the context of the necessary pro-environmental and pro-climate transformation of the energy sector, i.e. the development of emission-free energy sources. This is particularly important in order to smoothly and quickly reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, slow down the process of global warming and limit the scale of any future climate catastrophe.

Greetings from Nepal
Attached is a screenshot of article published in 2018. The statistics show zero citations but the number of readers is above 10,000. How do I interpret this data?
#Nepal
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear ,
I think that the number of 10.000 views is open for debate. The things that some journals count the number of views (and show them publicly), but you have different kinds of views. It can be just reading the abstract/title, scrolling quickly through the html version of a paper (to check for example a figure that might be of interest) and a ‘real’ read often seen as download of a pdf.
If you look at https://openpublichealthjournal.com/VOLUME/11/PAGE/243/ the current statistics are Full-Text HTML Views: 7232, Abstract HTML Views: 1802, PDF Downloads: 728, ePub Downloads: 424, Total Views/Downloads: 10186 I do not trust the 7232 views I suspect that everybody who (quickly) looked at your title, first sentences of your abstract etc. are all counted as views of people who actually read your paper. I think that the downloads around 1000 plus is a more accurate estimate.
If you look at the reads here on RG, you see that the paper has 200 plus reads. Since in my experience only 25% (or less) of these reads comes from RG members and the remaining reads comes from Google Scholar etc. It is somewhat indicative of the ‘real’ interest in the paper. Take your PLoS One paper from 2020 it has somewhat less than 200 reads here on RG (it is somewhat more recent but in same order of magnitude) and according to the journal site https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0230960 the total views are 2441 of which 1463 are HTML views and around one thousand downloads. So, though definitely nice the number of ‘real’ views is most likely around a thousand.
Furthermore, the paper you talk about is published in “The Open Public Health Journal” is a nice and legit journal (indexed in Scopus https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/19700201625 ) it is a small journal. In the Scopus link you can see that the CiteScore is around 1 which roughly means 1 citation per paper per year, meaning that on average the papers gather 1 citation per year but if some got more than one it means that some receive none.
So, in summary I think more than 10000 views is too optimistic and realize that there is only a weak (if any) correlation between number of downloads and number of citations (https://springerplus.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/2193-1801-2-261 ).
Best regards.
PS. In Google Scholar your paper received one citation in the meantime.

I would like to access available principles, methods, tools, techniques, and recommendations regarding the research on Public Health and Disaster Engineering, with best-suited research topics and available/possible research methods for this topic, in the context of Nepal

I believe that one area of potential interest for disaster prevention in Nepal maybe retrofitting buildings in order to mitigate the damage caused by earthquakes.
Many European buildings are vulnerable to moderate-magnitude earthquakes.... many of them were constructed prior to the current seismic codes, thus considering only gravitational loads and with no seismic design whatsoever....The calculations have shown that steel X-bracings are the best solution for preventing the formation of a soft-storey in the ground floor. Unfortunately, this scheme increases the deformation in the upper floor columns. The best solution for the upper floors' short columns has been the use of steel jackets.1
For buildings in earthquake-prone countries emphasis on seismic safety frequently leads to the sacrifice of functionality and beauty. Therefore, it is important to develop new structural technologies that can ensure the seismic performance of a building without hampering the pursuit of functionality and beauty. Pin-supported walls, which can effectively enhance the structural story-by-story integrity of a building.2
New Zealand introduced a seismic retrofitting policy in the wake of the catastrophic Canterbury earthquakes of 2010-11. The aim was to enforce seismic strengthening of earthquake-prone commercial buildings throughout the country. This study focuses on regional urban centres and the economic obstacles to strengthening their aging building stock.3

In Nepal, crop insurance and refunding policy is is area-yield /revenue-based and cost of production based. Farmers are partially following crop insurance in comparison to livestock and other life insurance ones. Literatures say that weather index based insurance policy is more cheaper to the insurer and efficient to insured member. However, I am not getting appropriate literatures explaining logic on funding of government on it. Why not the most government not following weather-base policy? I request more elaborative answers as well as suggestions and literatures from the experts.

Relevant answer
Answer
Weather-based insurance is more effective than yield-based insurance because the information asymmetry is lesser in the case of weather-based insurance. In weather-based policies, the claim is paid on the basis of deviation from the expected rainfall or temperature predicted by the meteorological department. While in the yield-based policies, the farmers may not put ample efforts to increase the crop yield and the probability of claims is very high. That is why weather-based insurance policies have low premiums and are more sustainable due to their nature of lowering the information asymmetry between the insurers and the policyholders.

I am from Nepal and we lack adequate resources/ infrastructures for advanced researches in this field. Also, I do not have sufficient knowledge at present to pursue these researches independently. I am willing to devote a lot of time if given the opportunity to collaborate.
I hope to get some updates regarding the ongoing researches in Nepal (in Plant breeding/ genetics.)
Thank you!
Happy learning!

Dear Amrit Sharma, although the scientific bases of plant breeding are the same, doesn't matter the species, the objectives respond to local particularities and necessities. Focus your attention on regional and/or national bottlenecks and problems. Depending of what are you pursuing, in some cases you wouldn't need too much resources. Observation is an important part of research, and selection is likely the "stronger" allied for plant breeders. Of course, in other cases you would need potent scientific infrastructures to deep in your research field, and for to obtain faster advances. However, your capacity to adapt to your conditions as well as to optimize the use of your resources might give you many satisfactions and advances to reach your goals.
Good luck!!!!

Nepal’s constitution does not state clearly about political affiliation or membership as criteria for ineligibility for the position of the judge. Can they remain members of a political party? Or can a person who served as a parliamentarian be appointed in the position of judge? How can possible conflict of interest be avoided?
Although the 23 February decision of the Supreme Court on house dissolution set a precedent and firmly established the separation of powers between three branches of the state and established constitutional supremacy, the time taken by the Supreme Court to determine the bench and the prolonged hearings of the case raised serious doubts on judicial fairness. All eyes were on the Supreme Court regarding whether the Court would be able to protect constitutionalism and maintain its integrity - keeping itself away from the political influence.
Public perceive that the judges are and can be influenced politically. Nepal's judicial history has proved that the political influence is the most common threat. Historical evidence shows that during the royal regime, it was controlled by the King and the royal palace and after the establishment of democracy by the political forces – judges are appointed based on political affiliation and political bhagbanda (sharing) and family ties. The provisions of the Interim Constitution, 2007 and the current Constitution, 2015 governing the selection, appointment and removal of judges reflects absolute political control over the judicial branch. Many of them owed their preferment to their party connections and disincline to sever against them undermining judicial integrity and independence.

A Judge can be a member or politically affiliated in his individual capacity with a political party of his choice as he is having freedom or right to choose his own choice as a citizen

I am asking this in relation to practice in active learning in physics education in context of Nepal's education system where we highly focus on content based and rote learning.
Relevant answer
If students have been trained in very passive and traditional learning methods, they will find it difficult to switch to a different mental model of what education is. In these circumstances, it is important for them to know why the change is necessary and what the benefits will be for them. They will need a lot of emotional support because you will be asking them to abandon learning strategies that have previously brought them success and adopt knew ones that are full of risk and uncertainty. Basically, you will have to work twice as hard to prepare materials and guide them through the change. Support from your colleagues will also be crucial.

Technology is never a solution per se: informed by needs, ICT must deliver context-appropriate solutions framed by (a) infrastructure—first and foremost; (b) requisite institutional structure and capacity; (c) a reform-oriented mind-set; (d) necessary skills and expertise; (e) appropriate business models; and (f) enabling policy and regulatory environments. There is no shortcut and merely having a mobile phone or a Facebook account will not take us there. Delivering across the afore-mentioned prerequisites is of the essence of public policy (with subsequent inputs from the private sector): once they are at hand or in train, there is great scope for the deployment of e-services and applications across the sectors and themes that governments and their agencies aim to impact.

Solar Fencing has been set up at few lowland districts in Nepal to control elephant attacks. Does the fence have same effects on reptiles especially snakes? Are there any behaviours recorded before anywhere?
Can anyone recommend research studies conducted before regarding effects on reptiles from such fencing?
Relevant answer
Answer
One of the difficulties with any type of electric fencing is that it can prove dangerous, even deadly, for the animals involved. For both Asian and African elephants, many have died as a result of protecting crops due to such fencing. Aside from this problem, the effectiveness of fences alone greatly varies depending on the context and experience of the elephants involved (O'Connell-Rodwell et al., 2000). A potentially more effective and safer treatment appears to be the use of beehives, either artificially produced via sound or live, which both African and Asian elephants will actively avoid (King et al., 2018; Soltis et al., 2014).
There are really two parts to your question: (1) How effective is electric fencing for deterring wildlife?, and (2) Do reptiles such as snakes learn similarly to mammals to avoid aversive stimuli such as electric fencing? As to the first question, as I've noted above, there are questions about how effective and safe electric fencing is for both African and Asian elephants, as well as viable alternatives. This is likely a case-by-case situation that is species- and context-dependent, but I would guess that there are often effective alternatives, including specific behavior training programs (see some of Ken Ramirez's elephant conservation and training work). As to the second question, the simple answer is that all organisms learn effectively via operant and respondent conditioning, as well as pseudo-learning (habitation and sensitization). It might be worth your time to reach out to Dr. Gordon Burghardt at the University of Tennessee, who is an expert in all aspects involving reptile learning, among many other things. If anyone has an answer to your question that is snake- and learning-specific, it would be Dr. Burghardt. The end result is that this could make for a really great study that provides some effective, safe, and humane options for protecting reptilian wildlife.

I am trying to calculate the wealth index of a rural community of Nepal. For this, I used 10 household assets variables after conducting a descriptive analysis. I used the principal component analysis. I got the first four components have more than 1 eigenvalue, those four component explains 54% of the variance (the first component explains only 17.9%). The KMO measure of sampling adequacy is 0.619, Bartlett's test of sphericity is <0.001. Now, I am confused about the following things:
1. Does the wealth index create (by predict command) considers all component those eigenvalue is more than 1 or just the first component? If it is only the first component then, does it means it only explains 17.9% variance?
2. If I add one more variable, it increases the total variance, Bartlett's test remains significant, but KMO measure drops to 0.599. Can we consider KMO 0.599 as 0.6 (as 0.6 is the minimum acceptable value)?
Can I proceed with my study with the above results?
Sorry If my question is not clear, I can explain it further if you want.
Thank you
