Assuming as a Reviewer I am assigned to review a manuscript and I find it difficult reviewing due to grammatical and typo-errors, is it acceptable to make corrections before reviewing the manuscript or it must be sent back to the author (s) to effect such corrections as identified.
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Andrew Paul McKenzie Pegman,
You may want to look over info presented below:
The ethics of a reviewer correcting grammar errors and typos in a text depend on the context and purpose of the review. Here are some considerations to help determine whether it is ethical for a reviewer to make such corrections:
  1. Editorial Role: If the reviewer is acting in an editorial or proofreading capacity, it is generally considered ethical to correct grammar errors and typos. This role involves improving the clarity and quality of the writing, and fixing such errors is a standard part of the process.
  2. Peer Review for Content: In academic or professional peer review, the primary focus should be on the content, methodology, and validity of the work rather than grammar and typos. Correcting minor language issues should not be the primary concern of a content review, as it could be seen as distracting from the substantive evaluation of the work.
  3. Author's Consent: If the reviewer decides to make grammar and typo corrections in a content review, it is ethical to do so only if the author has consented or if such corrections are explicitly within the scope of the review process. Some reviewers may provide feedback on language as a secondary aspect, but this should not overshadow the primary content review.
  4. Disclosure: If a reviewer decides to make language corrections, they should disclose this action to the author, especially if the corrections significantly alter the original text. Transparency is important to maintain the integrity of the review process.
  5. Respect for Author's Style: Reviewers should be mindful of the author's writing style and voice. While correcting errors is generally acceptable, it's important not to impose one's own writing style on the author's work.
  6. Objective vs. Subjective Errors: Some grammar and style issues are subjective, and there may be multiple correct ways to address them. In such cases, reviewers should exercise caution and not impose their personal preferences.
  7. Critique vs. Correction: It is important to differentiate between critiquing the writing style and correcting minor language errors. Providing constructive feedback on language issues without directly altering the text can be a more ethical approach in content reviews.
In summary, whether it is ethical for a reviewer to correct grammar errors and typos depends on the review context and the expectations set by the reviewing process. Ethical reviewers prioritize the primary goals of the review, which may be content evaluation, and address language issues only in a way that respects the author's voice and consent.

Title: Exploring the Impact of Virtual Reality on Cognitive Rehabilitation in Stroke Patients
Authors:
  • John A. Smith, PhD
  • Emily R. Johnson, MS
  • Sarah L. Davis, MD
Affiliations:
  • Department of Psychology, University of XYZ
  • Department of Neurology, ABC Hospital
Abstract:
Background: Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, often resulting in cognitive impairments that significantly impact patients' quality of life. Traditional cognitive rehabilitation approaches have limitations in terms of engagement and individualized therapy. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool for cognitive rehabilitation, offering immersive and customizable experiences. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of VR-based cognitive rehabilitation in improving cognitive functions in stroke patients.
Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 80 post-stroke patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairments. Participants were randomly assigned to either a VR-based cognitive rehabilitation group or a traditional therapy group. The VR group engaged in a 6-week program of VR-based cognitive exercises designed to target memory, attention, and executive functions. The traditional therapy group received standard cognitive rehabilitation sessions. Cognitive assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Trail-Making Test, were administered at baseline, post-intervention, and at a 3-month follow-up.
Results: Preliminary analysis of the data reveals a significant improvement in cognitive function in the VR group compared to the traditional therapy group (p < 0.05). Specifically, participants in the VR group showed substantial gains in memory retention and attention span. These improvements were sustained at the 3-month follow-up assessment. Furthermore, participants in the VR group reported higher levels of engagement and satisfaction with the therapy.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that VR-based cognitive rehabilitation has the potential to be an effective and engaging intervention for stroke patients with cognitive impairments. The immersive and individualized nature of VR therapy may contribute to better outcomes and long-term cognitive gains. Further research with a larger and more diverse sample is warranted to confirm these promising preliminary results.
Keywords: Virtual reality, cognitive rehabilitation, stroke, cognitive impairment, randomized controlled trial, immersive therapy

This example is for illustrative purposes and may need to be adjusted to meet the requirements of the conference where the manuscript will be presented.

I just finish to read the letter to the editor "Is ChatGPT a valid author?" at Nurse Education in Practice doi:10.1016/j.nepr.2023.103600 and I cannot believe that so far there are 2 manuscripts using the tool and cite the tool as a co-author. I have try the app to see how that works using very technical questions and some not that much. I am amaze with the technology of the app, how accurate it is for the not too technical, and how "honest" is with the things that are too technical and there is not enough data. The largest problem that I saw is the lack or reference on the statements, it might say in journal X or Y and the year, but never the author (In the examples that I checked, I couldn't find none of the 3 papers that it references in the text). As every tool it opens a lot of opportunities, the good ones and the other. The discussion is should we incorporate it in class as a tool? Will this increase plagiarism or will help to polish the writing? How much should we disclaim the use of it? if we do should we disclose the use of other tools such as Grammarly? What do you think?
Relevant answer
Answer
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have found that ChatGPT, currently one of the most popular generative AI platforms, “is heavily biased when it comes to cultural values”. It promotes American norms and values and often presents them as ‘universal’ when asked to provide responses about concepts and other countries and cultures. This way, the researchers argue, ChatGPT acts as a “cultural imperialist tool that the United States, through its companies, uses to promote its values”. An attempt by an Asian American student in the United States to use an AI tool to create a professional photo for her LinkedIn profile produced a photo in which she appeared white and blue eyed. For AI tools, this is what a ‘professional’ is supposed to look like. Not Asian or black, but white and blue-eyed.

Dear colleagues,
We are preparing a Special Issue on Biodiversity and Research in Central America to be published in the journal Neotropical Biology and Conservation.
Central America hosts about 5–12% of the world's biological diversity and is often referred to as a hyperdiversity hotspot in the Neotropical region. Amongst others, it is one of the top five most diverse regions for vascular plants. Because of its geographical placement, Mesoamerica is a key area for understanding both ecological and evolutionary processes to which tropical species are subjected. The dynamic landscape of Central America had a direct impact on the diversification and colonization of biota in the isthmus, thus creating new niches. Despite the region's potential for investigation, relatively little attention has been given in comparison to other Neotropical regions. This special issue aims to create a space to promote research conducted in this unique and diverse region and to give it the recognition it deserves.
If you think your research is suitable for this Special Issue, we invite you to submit a manuscript. The submission deadline is 30 December 2023.
All manuscripts submitted and accepted to this special issue will be published free of charge. This is a great opportunity to publish your work open access for free!
The editors of this special issue are Monika Lipińska, Maria Mercedes Lopez-Selva and José Monzón Sierra.
We are looking forward to receiving your manuscripts.

In general, the publication ethics and policies of journals may vary. Some journals may consider manuscripts that have been previously published in a repository as duplicate publications and may not accept them for publication. Others may have specific guidelines or requirements regarding the prior publication of manuscripts in repositories.
To determine whether it is allowed to publish a manuscript that has been previously published in a campus repository, it is best to consult the specific journal's guidelines and policies. You can check the journal's website or contact the journal editor or editorial office directly to inquire about their policies regarding manuscript publication in relation to prior publication in a repository. For instance, if I a particular school is the setting of my research study, is it acceptable for me to mention the name of that school in the Manuscript under ethical considerations?
Relevant answer
Answer
In general, it is considered ethically acceptable for a researcher to state the location of a study in a manuscript or article, including mentioning the name of a specific school as the setting of the research study. However, it is important to ensure that the privacy and confidentiality of the participants and the institution are protected.
Researchers should consider the following ethical considerations when stating the location of a study:
Informed Consent: Ensure that participants have provided informed consent for their participation in the study, including any mention of the location or institution. Participants should be aware of how their information will be used and disclosed.
Confidentiality: Take precautions to protect the confidentiality of the participants and the institution. Avoid including any personally identifiable information or details that could potentially identify the individuals involved.
Anonymity: If necessary, consider using pseudonyms or generic descriptions instead of specific names to further protect the identity of the institution or individuals involved.
Ethics Approval: If the study has received approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or ethics committee , mention this in the manuscript or article. It demonstrates that ethical considerations were taken into account during the research process.
Ethical Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the ethical guidelines and standards specific to your field of research or the journal you are submitting to. Different disciplines and journals may have specific requirements or recommendations regarding the disclosure of study locations.
By following these ethical considerations and guidelines, researchers can ensure that they are conducting their study in an ethical manner while still providing important context and information about the location of their research.

My manuscript, which I sumbit to a journal of Sage in September 2022, passed the Editor stage and was taken for peer review. After 11 months, the referee evaluation was finalised. They rejected it without revision today. The editor said that "Although the reports are generally positive, we are unable to accept your submission for publication. This is due to the sheer volume of submissions we have received over the past few years. As a result, the acceptance rate had to be strongly reduced." There are contradictory statements that I cannot make sense of. How can an article with a "positive report" be rejected without revision after 11 months with the excuse of the acceptance rate of the journal? If they are sensitive to the acceptance rate, why do they take it to peer review and how do they see themselves the right to keep it waiting for 11 months? Isn't it unfair to keep them waiting for 11 months to give a direct rejection?
Despite the positive reports, they only showed me the review text of one referee. Unfortunately, the review of the referee full of contradictions is very superficial and there is not even a concrete argument and criticism. I cannot see the other reviews at all. After 11 months, I am very upset to be rejected with an acceptance rate excuse and an inconsistent referee review. What can I do against this situation? How can I claim my rights? How can I complain about the editor's unfair attitude and approach. I need your help very much. Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Complaining about an editor is a delicate and challenging task, because you do not want to damage your professional relationship. however, you can do it in a respectful and constructive way.
  • Identify the specific issues, contact the editor directly and politely.
  • Explain your concerns and provide the evidence you have collected.
  • Ask them to explain their editing choices.
  • Avoid using accusatory or aggressive language, avoid your emotions and focus on the facts.
  • If the editor refuses to cooperate, you can report the issue to a higher authority, such as the editorial board. Provide them with the same evidence that you gave to the editor and request their intervention and assistance.
  • If nothing happens, terminate your contract with the editor or find a different editor.

Dear colleagues from the field of (Cognitive) Literary Studies,
I conducted an empirical study on "Waiting for Godot" during my time as a graduate student and completed the initial manuscript of the article in ca. 2011/2012. I have since moved into TEFL and don't see when, or if ever, I will finish the article and submit it. However, the empirical data has been collected and analyzed, the manuscript is written, and the results are, I think, relevant to Literary Studies (in particular: Cognitive Literary Studies, literary studies on Samuel Beckett). A summary of the article's content is given below. A conference poster on the study is here:
I am guessing that the article is 75-80% complete, although some of the literature is out of date by now. I am looking for a co-author or collaborator to finish the article and hand it in. I would be responsible for handling the empirical section of the article. I'd be happy to send you the manuscript, so that you can make your own assessment. A possible venue for publication would be "Scientific Study of Literature". I have published in peer-reviewed journals with De Gruyter and John Benjamins since.
All the best,
Andreas Wirag

Working title: A Cognitive Analysis of Waiting for Godot
Summary: The study employed cognitive action scripts, which are mental representations of stereotypical activities, to contrast the characters' actions in the play with the audience's scripted expectations. A questionnaire survey was conducted to generate scripts of audience expectations for the characters' various activities. The analysis demonstrates a disconnect between the audience's scripts, which are linear/logical, and the characters' actions, which violate these scripted expectations. The study concludes that action scripts provide a basis for understanding the characters' behavior; their actions and activities appear absurd/illogical/non-teleological when contrasted with the audience's scripts (cf. Theater of the Absurd).

We can work together.
Here are my thoughts to enhance and references:
"Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett is a play known for its exploration of existential themes, repetitive dialogue, and absurdity. If you are looking to enhance the cognitive scripts and absurdity in the play, here are a few possible improvements:
1. Expanding Cognitive Scripts:
- Introduce more complex and philosophical conversations between the characters, delving deeper into their existential dilemmas and questioning the nature of their existence.
- Incorporate flashbacks or introspective monologues that provide insights into the characters' past experiences and motivations, giving the audience a clearer understanding of their cognitive processes.
- Experiment with alternative endings or plot twists that challenge the audience's expectations and offer new perspectives on the characters' cognitive development.
2. Amplifying Absurdity:
- Emphasize the repetitive nature of the dialogue by introducing variations in tone, delivery, or physical gestures. This can help create a sense of monotony and absurdity in the characters' interactions.
- Integrate surreal or nonsensical elements into the play, such as illogical events, dream-like sequences, or absurd props. This can heighten the sense of absurdity and challenge the audience's perception of reality.
- Play with the timing and pacing of the scenes, incorporating pauses, extended silences, or exaggerated physical movements to create a sense of discomfort and absurdity.
3. Visual and Symbolic Enhancements:
- Utilize innovative stage design and lighting techniques to visually represent the characters' cognitive states or to emphasize the absurdity of their situation. This can involve unconventional set constructions or abstract visual elements.
- Introduce symbolic objects or motifs that represent the characters' cognitive struggles or existential themes. These symbols can add depth and layers of meaning to the play, further enhancing the cognitive experience for the audience.
4. Experimentation with Performance Styles:
- Explore different performance styles, such as physical theater, clowning, or improvisation, to amplify the absurdity and cognitive dissonance within the play. This can add fresh interpretations and enhance the overall impact of the performance.
- Encourage the actors to experiment with exaggerated physicality, vocal variations, and non-verbal expressions to embody the characters' cognitive states and highlight the absurdity of their actions.
References:
Few suggestions based on general principles of cognitive scripts and absurdity in theater. We can explore the following references for further insights and inspiration:
1. Books and Articles:
- "The Theatre of the Absurd" by Martin Esslin: This book explores the characteristics and themes of the Theatre of the Absurd, providing a comprehensive understanding of the genre.
- "Samuel Beckett and the Prosthetic Body: The Organs and Senses in 'Waiting for Godot'" by Enoch Brater: This article delves into the cognitive and sensory aspects of "Waiting for Godot" and how they contribute to the overall absurdity.
- "Theatre and Cognitive Neuroscience" edited by Clelia Falletti and Gabriele Sofia: This collection of essays examines the intersection between theater and cognitive neuroscience, offering insights into the cognitive processes involved in theatrical experiences.
2. Performances and Interpretations:
- Watch different productions of "Waiting for Godot" to observe how directors and actors approach the cognitive scripts and absurdity in their interpretations. Each production may offer unique insights and creative choices that can inspire your own improvements.
- Explore performances by theater companies known for their experimentation with absurd and avant-garde theater, such as the works of Eugène Ionesco, Harold Pinter, or the Living Theatre.
3. Theories on Absurdity and Cognitive Scripts:
- Absurdism: Familiarize yourself with the philosophical concepts and theories underpinning Absurdism, such as the works of Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. Understanding these theories can help inform your exploration of absurdity in "Waiting for Godot."
- Cognitive Science and Theater: Explore the field of cognitive science and its applications to theater. This interdisciplinary approach can provide insights into cognitive scripts, perception, memory, and the audience's cognitive experience during a performance.

Reviewers play a crucial role in the peer review process by evaluating the quality and validity of manuscripts. Many journals are open to having PhD students as reviewers, especially if they have expertise in the subject area of the submitted manuscript. Reviewing manuscripts can be a valuable experience for PhD students as it allows them to stay abreast of the latest research, improve their critical thinking and writing skills, and contribute to the scientific community.

Hi, friends
I wrote two manuscripts regarding validations of two different instruments using a same sample.
Even though the two instruments are different, the demographic description is similar because they used same sample. In this case, it could be considered as plagiarism??
Is there anyone who wrote different manuscripts using a same sample?
I published one manuscript about A instrument. The other manuscript about B instrument is under review and one of reviewers pointed out that the manuscript had a risk of plagiarism.
In this case, what should I do??
Please give me a helpful tips.
Thank you so much.
Relevant answer
Answer
It is only natural that research on the same sample will have overlap in terms of the description of the participants. This can make life easier because you can prune the table 1 part of the paper to a basic description and refer the reader to the first paper for a more detailed description. Researching distinct research questions using the same sample isn't plagiarism, it's making good use of the data. Indeed the problem is often that substantial amounts of material is left unanalysed in datasets. This is an ethical point, because participants provide the data for nothing, often putting in significant amounts of work, and have a right to expect that the data will be used to benefit the community they represent.

I want to know what it means of this status in the review process and what are further possibilities regarding the manuscript.
Thanks in Advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
In the context of the journal review process, the status "Decision Rescinded" typically indicates that a previous decision made on a manuscript has been reversed or withdrawn by the editor or journal. However, the exact implications and further possibilities can vary depending on the specific journal's policies and procedures. Here are some possible reasons and implications for the "Decision Rescinded" status:
Editorial reconsideration: The editor may have reviewed the initial decision and determined that it was incorrect or needed further assessment. Hence, they rescinded the decision to allow for a more thorough evaluation of the manuscript.
Peer review issues: The review process may have encountered problems, such as biased or unreliable reviews, ethical concerns, or conflicts of interest. As a result, the decision to accept, reject, or revise the manuscript may be rescinded to ensure fairness and integrity.
Author revisions: If the decision was initially to revise and resubmit the manuscript, the author's revisions could have been deemed inadequate or not meeting the journal's requirements. In such cases, the decision may be rescinded, and the author may need to make significant improvements before the review process continues.
Internal journal procedures: The rescinded decision could be part of the journal's internal procedures, such as during editorial board meetings or after consulting additional experts. It might also be a temporary status while awaiting further reviews or clarification.
It's important to note that the specific implications and possibilities after a decision is rescinded can vary. The manuscript could be sent back for further peer review, subjected to another round of revisions, or decline based on the new evaluations. To obtain accurate and definitive information about the status and future possibilities for your specific manuscript, it's best to reach out to the journal's editorial office or contact the journal's support for clarification.

Relevant answer
Answer
By its structure BCD shouldn't absorb in the UV (certainly not above 200 nm). It is possible that what you see is one or more oxidized impurities. For example, if one of the 14 secondary alcohol groups gets oxidized to a ketone, this may explain your 272 nm peak (for comparison, acetone absorbs at 280 nm).

If someone uses ChatGPT to improve sentence structure or vocabulary of a research manuscript, should it be deemed unethical by journals?
Some authors already take language improvement services from commercial firms like editage. Many researcher use AI based softwares like Grammarly to improve language.
Can ChatGPT be used as a costless alternative?
Relevant answer
Answer
Using ChatGPT or other AI-based tools to improve the language of research manuscripts is generally considered ethically okay. But it's important for authors to be upfront about it, so they should mention it in their acknowledgments or during manuscript submission. They should ensure that their original ideas and findings remain intact and that the changes made are accurate. It's like using a helpful assistant, but authors should still take charge and not rely too much on AI. Ultimately, they are responsible for their work, and it's essential to respect the policies of the journal they are submitting to. Just remember to be transparent, validate the changes, and be mindful of not accidentally copying others' work.

I served as a reviewer for journal B. I noticed that I already reviewed the same manuscript for journal A. I provided my comments (a couple of pages long) for improvement for journal A. However, the author (s) completely ignored my comments and made no changes to submit to journal B. The manuscript has been rejected by journal A because it does not meet the journal's quality standards.
I reported it to the journal editor and stated that I already reviewed this manuscript for another journal. The author (s) made no changes by reflecting on my comments.
My question is this: Do you think it should be the author’s academic freedom to revise or not to revise before submitting to another journal? Or should it be considered unethical practice? Also, should the manuscript be rejected if it is considered unethical?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Dr Don Soo Chon
The author(s) retains that right and has not done anything morally wrong. I think you and I would both do and choose differently but what they have done is not technically unethical or illegal. It might not enhance their chances of getting published. This is their fault.
I think you would be entitled to put in exactly the same review/response - change if you feel obliged to or compelled to ha ha. But if you do that, then I would consider such an action to be equally ethical and legal.
It may be frustrating from your point of view. It sounds like the author(s) could try harder.

Excited to share the release of another Special Issue entitled "Recent Advances in Computational Methods for Performance Assessment of Engineering Structures and Materials against Dynamic Loadings" in the SCI-index journal "Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences" | Tech Science Press.
Submission Deadline: 20 November 2023
Link for Submission:
Summary The design philosophy and methodology of civil engineering structures have been constantly evolving, from the early strength-based to more recent performance-based design and the current intensively researched emerging resilience-based design. Because failure of civil engineering structures often leads to catastrophic consequences, the primary focus of all these design methods is the safety of structures while considering other aspects such as performance and resilience. With the economic growth, population increase and urbanization, as well as global warming and the depletion of natural resources, to meet the societal need for sustainable development, the construction of civil engineering structures also needs to consider sustainability, durability and smart lifecycle management besides safety, performance and resilience.
While steel and concrete are still the main structural materials today, several promising new options have emerged as alternative or supplemental materials for structural use. These emerging materials include fiber-rein-forced polymer composites, fiber-reinforced cementitious composites, fabric-reinforced concrete, seawater sea-sand concrete, ultrahigh-performance concrete, ultrahigh-performance steel, and various types of green materials. Although these materials hold great potential for stronger, lighter and more durable structures, their adoption in structural engineering has been slow.
This Special issue covers a wide range of modern trends in the study of the analysis, design, integrity, and safety of engineering structures and materials based on experimental testing, numerical simulations, and analytical/theoretical analyses.
Topics of interests include (but are not limited to): · Design, integrity, reliability, and safety of engineering structures; · Damage mechanics; · Structural performance under extreme loadings; · Construction materials; · Condition assessment of civil infrastructure; · Fatigue reliability assessment of critical structures; · Quasi-static, earthquake, wind, impact, fire, and blast loadings; · Advances in reliability and optimization of structural systems; · Bridge analysis, design, assessment, monitoring and management; · Vibration Analysis for Civil Engineering Structures; · Management of Civil Infrastructure; · Codes and standards; · Composite structures; · Artificial Intelligence; Machine-learning

15,000 is too long for most journals. You basically need to cut it down to under 10,000. Many journals have an automatic reject based on excess word count. Superbly good & informative papers can do it under 10,000 so work on cutting. Good luck with it!

Is it logical for a reviewer to send different comments after R1? We recieved comments and after submitting the revised MS, all the changes were satisfactory to reviewers as they did not raise any query regarding previous comments. But, in R2 totally different comments were made on the manuscript.
Relevant answer
Answer
It is not uncommon for reviewers to provide different comments or to raise new concerns after the submission of a revised manuscript. This could be due to a number of factors, such as the reviewer having a closer reading of the manuscript or having new insights based on additional research. However, it is also possible that the reviewer may not have thoroughly reviewed the previous version of the manuscript or that they may have changed their opinion. In any case, it is important for the author to carefully consider the feedback and revise the manuscript accordingly.
