Short history: was building a code in Scilab and at some point, needed to integrate e^e^x. Then I learned that not every integral of exponential is "easy". Luckily, the solution (the exponential integral function, Ei(x)) has been the matter of many articles. It is clear that to make my simulation computationally feasible I will need to use an approximation of Ei(x). I don't feel comfortable using approximations, therefore I would like to know what is the most accurate of them. I have been testing two (or three of them, if we assume that Matlab function expint() is just another approximation), the Swamee and Ohija approx. (DOI:10.1111/j.1745-6584.2003.tb02608.x) and the Barry et al. approx (https://doi.org/10.1016%2FS0022-1694%2899%2900184-5). When compared with the Matlab function expint(), the Barry et al. approx. is very similar but with clear differences at small values of x. The Swamee and Ohija approx. was the one showing larger differences of the three, it is probably the less accurate one.
I would like to know what is the approximation that Matlab uses; if there is an expint() equivalent in Scilab; and whether there is a better approximation than the two I have tested so far.
I know, I also have the option of giving up with the open-source software and just using Matlab but I still want to give it a shot 😊.

Just an update. Out of the several approximations I tested, the Barry et al is the best. It has been very useful to me and it produces values that are very similar to the ones produced by the Matlab function expint.
I used the code below to write the Ei_barry(x) function in Scilab (shown below, maybe not written in the most efficient way). It is almost identical to expint(x) function in Matlab.

I was trying to find the generating function of the canonical transformations. Firstly it seems to me that (p1,Q1,q2,P2) are independent variables so I can make a Generating function that is of 3rd kind w.r.t the first particle and of 2nd kind w.r.t the second particle. So I need to find the generating function of the form $ F32(p1,Q1,q2,P2).
To start with I used several methods
- I tried to make an exact differential out of the given equations
- I tried to use the partial derivatives of Generating function and tried to Integrate them with additional proper functions
- Tried to use another pair of variables
Nothing seems to work.
Please tell what I should do.

There are many fully distributed hydrological models, but we can't decide the one best model over another. Every model is different, their peformances vary in different basins. Physicaly-based models may give accurate results, but requires vast amount of high resultion input data. Whereas conceptual models require less data, but oftnen needed fine tuning of calibration parameters. While selecting the model, you have to consider following:
1. What hydrological prrocesses you are highly intersted to model?
2. Avaialbility, spatial and temporal resolution of data
3. Principle of parismony (less complex models with good performance are better)
4. Purpose of modelling

Integration of H2 storage in a two sub-systems electrolyzer and methanation helps to achieve an independent operation of methanation unit to continuously produce synthetic methane . A potential reduction of methane production costs could also be achieved by integrating a hydrogen storage facility in the system. Methanation unit can run on FLH such as 8500h when an intermediate hydrogen storage is integrated and be able to supply sufficent hydrogen. This way running hours of electrolyzer is reduced and hence less electricity is purchased.

Using the numerical value from the CO2 volumetric flow, then using Sabatier reaction calculate the required H2 volumetric flow. And from there, keep calculating backwards until the electrolysis dimension comes out.

A sequential, if-and-only-if criterion of Riemann integrability that follows from the Riemann’s definition of the integral, states that a function on a closed and bounded interval is Riemann integrable if and only if any respective sequence of Riemann sums is Cauchy for any tagged partition of the interval with norm tending to zero [1].
Although this is not a new result, it is not mentioned in standard textbooks [2-5].
However, if the previous criterion is used as a starting point to define the integral, it provides a number of educational advantages over the traditional definitions of Riemann and Darboux.
The uniqueness, the linearity, and the order properties of the integral all follow naturally and easily from the respective properties of sequence limit [1].
Moreover, the boundedness of any integrable function is not necessary to be assumed beforehand, as it can be easily proved using that a convergent sequence is bounded [1].
Further, this approach has the advantage of being “infinitesimal-friendly” (so to speak), as the integral can be realized as an infinite sum of infinitesimal quantities [6], thus giving the instructor the opportunity to further introduce the concept of infinitesimal.
Appealing mainly to mathematicians, I wonder if a work presenting such an approach would be publishable in educationally-oriented journals of mathematics.

I am currently busy with my PhD on omnichannel supply chain integration. I am struggling with the correct “terminology” in terms of omnichannel. It seems that most authors simply use “channel” or “online/offline channel”. However, since I am investigating omnichannel from a supply chain perspective, my supervisors feel that “channel” is too broad. For example, depending on the part of the omnichannel process I am discussing – the website could serve as both a communication OR distribution channel. My supervisors feel that it would dilute the managerial recommendations at the end of the study since channel is ambiguous. The suggestion at this stage is to use the word “omnichannels” instead of channels (as it is more inclusive than merely using channel).
For example:
“Shopping by means of a variety of omnichannels is no longer novel but has become universal for both consumers and retailers (Cummins, Peltier & Dixon, 2016: 12). Customers expect consistent, uniform, integrated services and experiences, regardless of the omnichannel they use. Customers are willing to move seamlessly between their preferred omnichannel depending on their current situation, the time of day, or the product category.”
My question(s) for other authors writing within the field of omnichannel retailing:
1) Do you think the ambiguous use of “channel” dilutes the understanding of omnichannel retailing?
2) How do you explicitly differentiate between the different uses of “channel” (as touchpoints and fulfilment channels) to clear up the ambiguity WITHOUT creating reader fatigue?
Attach is a table with a summary of the terms used across omnichannel. I attempted to answer my own question with this table – but ended up creating more questions than answers.

I have been trying to integrate a simple unc-122p::GFP array after microinjection by using the protocol on WormBook. I have repeated this twice, each time singling around 150 fluorescent progeny of the UV-irradiated worms. Starting from a strain with around 20% transmission, I have a couple of plates with much higher transmission, say 80 or even 90%. I thought these may be heterozygous integrants, so I singled 10 fluorescent progeny from 10 of these plates. However, this never leads to a homozygous strain, so presumably the integration wasn't successful, but how is it possible that theysuddenly show such an increased transmission nonetheless? And what could I do differently to get a proper integration? Thank you for your advice!

Hey, I am currently writing a paper about risks in software implementations. For that I am using an employee survey (qual + quant) plus qualitative interviews (semi-standardized). Both research methods use qual and quant questions. The evaluation of the survey will take place with graphs, means and hypothetical tests, and the evaluation of the interviews will be inductive as well as deductive. The reasoning will include a mixture of both results.
In that sense - is it correct to use the integrated mixed model design?

Complementarity is undoubtedly the most common design in mixed methods research, and the degree of integration is the key to how well it is accomplished. Setting the two sets of results up so that they can be integrated during the Results section is preferable to presenting them separately and then making the comparison in the Discussion section. But if your design doesn't isn't compatible with that format, then a thorough discussion of "confirmation and contradiction" would still be more than most complementary mixed methods studies achieve.

I am modelling an axisymmetric piezoelectric transmitter in COMSOL 5.6 and use Exterior Field Calculation (full integral) to find the pressure outside my simulation domain. This works fine when I want to find the pressure in a single point (e.g. acpr.pext(1,0)), but I want to find the average pressure over a plane surface coaxial with the transmitter, i.e. a line average due to the axial symmetry.
I haven't been able to define a line average in "Result -> Derived Values" since there is no boundary outside my simulation domain, and if I add a line in the geometry outside my simulation domain, it does not get meshed. An alternative approach would be to export acpr.pext at the line of interest (with a suitable sampling) to a text file and compute the average outside COMSOL, so far I haven't been able to export the pressure for multiple points.
Does anybody have an idea as to how I could compute the average pressure?

Eivind Nag Mosland I think you can just add a domain which has the surface that you want to be averaged. Mesh it. And make an average operation over pext on that surface. Works fine.

The sample size of 30 cases is based upon the Central limit Theorem which you can get in any Mathematical Statistics book. So there is a theoretical background for this. This does not mean that less than 30 does not have a normal distribution..

The ivt values are not available directly.
You will need u-wind (u), v-wind(v), and specific humidity(q) at different pressure levels from the surface (~1000hpa) up to somewhere near 300hpa.
For first two levels, you can take the average q, u, v, and compute q*u and q*v for it.
similarly, for the second and third level, and so on to the last level.
All all the qu values over all the levels to get integrated vapor flux in u direction, call it QU. (you'll also multiply the entire terms by 1/g to make is flux in kgm-1-1). Similalrly, you can find the integrated flux in v direction QV.
After this, you can take the square root of the QU and QV vector to give you IVT.

I am wondering when integrating cross peaks in an HSQC spectra: is it selecting the whole desired contour from side to side? Since some spectra are so crowded and there might be a lot of overlap in 1D spectra, when we have HSQC it is difficult to select the peak to a point where we hit baseline on either side of the peak in two dimensions. Hi all. Here is a more or less elementary solution. Since the function extends to a holomorphic one on the complement of the half line ]-\infty,-1] (of course, we are using the standard determination of log), we can use a contour which is slightly on the right of -1. See the attached file.

I'm working on a scientific paper within my Management Module in university about how AI and Big Data support Management Decisions. As that is a topic where one can easily lose track, I am curious about what other researchers think.
I found out about the Integrated Strategy Machine as vision for the ideal combination of human and machine forces. But the ISM encompasses other aspects beyond Management Decisions and doesn't get to the core of my research question. I begin to wonder whether AI did not yet reach a level on which it can truly support or make Management Decisions, but instead can only be supportive with administrative work, which would also be a result for itself.
Also the combination of several data basis would be necessary for AI to support managers, which is unfortunately widely prohibited by private law. Also to be considered is Moore's law which seems to come to an end - hardware developed rapidly over the last decades whereas software couldn't keep up in comparison. The development of Machine Learning seems to get to the center of attentions as it is desirable to get machines to learn with less data - not every company has access to Big Data, let alone different data basis.

For Cyclic voltammetry, the Ca means capacitance (or areal capacitance), Integrated i means the total volumetric charge, v is scan rate, deltaV is the operating voltage, and A is area of sample
For GCD, the Cg means the capacitance ( or areal cap), I means constant current, t is the discharge time, and the delta V is the operating voltage. In addition, why is the used formula for GCD capacitance is discharge time and not charging time???

According to my studies, it's the best integration of Renewables ( Solar PV or WInd) generations systems with the conventional generation systems like the Hydropower and Thermal Power generations systems. Because the Renewables have the intermittent characteristics that can be compensated with the stable generation-powers from the Hydropower and Thermal power.
This integration could be a feasible option with different beneficial features of the Renewables. For example, in the summer, the Solar PV system can generate the large capacity; in the rainy season, the Hydropower and Wind systems can generate large capacities.

I need to solve the following integral (attached as an image file)
The context is on the calculation of View Factors in Radiation Heat Transfer
I worked out the this expression from the general formula, working out my configuration of two bodies in cylindrical coordinates (for one of the bodies) and using spherical coordinates (for the other body).
But I'm not sure if I ended with a well defined Integral, since I used two different coordinated systems on a same problem.
I used Cylindrical Coordinates for one of the dA and Spherical Coordinates for the other dA, however both dA are part of the same integral.
Hopefully someone out there can give me some help !

When is an integral well defined? First, if the integrating function is integrable (in this case it is); second, if the domain of integration makes sense and is non-contradictory, then the final answer is that it depends on domains A1 and A2. What I do not understand is what the two additional integration variables mean, therefore I suppose that in the domains A1 and A2 the limits for z and η are included. If not, it is a meaningless integral.

This question is equivalent to asking to evaluate the integral of an arbitrary positive bounded function, because if 0<g<M then g=M exp(-|f(x)|^2) with
f=(1/2)ln(M/g). So the question is about a general procedure of integration.
With no further assumptions on the integrand there is little hope to say anything significant, the function might not be integrable.
However, if we assume some regularity on the integrand, then numerical quadrature maybe an option.

Poison baits are effective when used early in the morning or in the evening. During the day, the baits dry quickly so hoppers do not eat it.

I searched up a bit and found some extensions using R but I ran through the steps and it kept saying that the Integration R plug-in has not been installed. Is there any way round?

The preinstalled SPPS plugin for PS matching in SPSS V25 and V26 doesn't have that capability.
I think its easiest to use PS matching in R for advanced PS matching demands.

I have used SPSS24 and R, but you need to install the correct version of R before running the SPSS program to create the integration. For SPSS23, this might be version 3.4.x, but the manual from SPSS should tell you which version you need to have. When you have done all of this, you need to install the packages belonging to this version of older R. You can not install directly from CRAN as you normally would do.
However, my integration did run till a few months without problems. Now I receive the warning that the external program (R) terminated the execution of the syntax. In SPSS 26, I do not seem to get output and SPSS also tells me the external program terminated the execution.

I am computing my biomarker data to compute out the Integrated Biomarker Index (IBR) to compare the integrated responses of multi - biomarker at different sites. As referred to (Devin et al., 2013) and also the early work proposed by (Beliaeff & Burgeot, 2002) as attached, the data of each biomarker must first be standardised according to this formula to get the standardised value known as Y. ; FORMULA; Y = (X - m)/s, Where (X) is the mean value for a specific site, (m) is the mean value for all sites and (s) is the standard deviation for all sites. Once the computation of Y is done the computation continues with the value of Z. Z value must be assigned with negative and positive sign following the expected biological effect of a certain biomarker; Z = Y or Z = -Y. However, what if the Y value computed from the first formula (Y= (X-m)/s) is already negative since the (m) value is higher than (X)? , (For example; the values of protein thiols would show downregulated level since they are oxidised from protein side chain, However, what if the Y value is already negative? so how should I assigned the Z value then?

 I have tried a delay differential equation in SIMULINK. While running the code, I am getting an error like "Derivative of state '15' in block 'Boring/Integrator' at time 0.038869123743967948 is not finite. The simulation will be stopped. There may be a singularity in the solution.  If not, try reducing the step size (either by reducing the fixed step size or by tightening the error tolerances)".

Dear Sir/ Ma'am,
The simulation I have run here is simple uniaxial tension test with Symmetric boundary contions in X,Y and Z on ABAQUS Explicit. This was done as a Test for a VUMAT code (Hyperelastic material with near incompressibility) that I had developed. The simulation starts with a loading phase, where the Stretch in X-direction is increased from 1 to 6, and a subsequent unloading phase coming back to the undeformed state. The analysis type is a Coupled Displacement + Temperature, with the C3D8RT (Reduced Integration) element type. The VUMAT code has been validated for a uniaxial tension 1-element simulation, but shows unrealisitic deformations during the unloading phase, when I use multiple elements (I have attached the pictures below).
What could be the causes for a change in solution after mesh refinement? Any help or inputs would be helpful, I look forward to your replies.

Hi,
the bounded second order scheme (BCD = bounded central difference scheme) is essentially of importance, if the high accuracy of a full 2nd oder scheme is required, but for a complex mesh it cannot be guaranteed that the CFL number is less than 1 everywhere in the mesh. Furthermore boundedness of certain variables is usually of importance. So e.g. you do not like that turbulent kinetic energy could suddenly and unexpectedly become a negative number because of some undershoots of a full 2nd order central difference method. Furthermore in a thermal application you do not like to see, that the temperature becomes for the reason of numerical errors larger than the maximum temperature occuring in your boundary conditions or smaller than BC temperatures, which would be in the absence of other sources and sink terms physically invalid. Using a bounded 2nd order scheme should assure you 2nd order accuracy everywhere where this is numerically possible and boundedness of bounded variables at the same time.
In particular for scale-resolving simulations (LES, DDES, SAS, SBES) the BCD scheme is quite frequently used, since it helps to maximize the timestep of integration for a given mesh and so to make as fast as possible advancement in time integration as possible from a numerical and accuracy point of view, without loosing the capability of resolving turbulent scales in the flow.

Dear Shiva Reddy,
For using USDFLD with UMAT, you can follow the steps below.
1) Model the geometry and assign material properties.
2) Go to Model -> Edit Keywords -> Model-1 (or your model name)
3) Scroll and find the material definition. It should be something like
*Material, name=Fiber
4) After that manually enter the following
*User Defined Field
*Depvar
n,
(Where n is the number of solution dependent variables)
5) Press 'OK' this will save the keword edit.
6) Specify the subroutine file. (The file should contain both USDFLD and UMAT)
This is worked for me.
