Hi,
I am a Hospitality PHD student, and recently I am conducting some research using the concept of "objective knowledge". After searching the literature, I found some researchers use self-developed quiz questions to measure "objective knowledge". Personally, I feel not good. I just wonder, if we have to use self-developed quiz questions to measure, is there any way that we can justify it or evaluate the validation, as most studies fail to do that, even those published on top tier journals
Thanks
Relevant answer
Answer
Wei is asking about how to measure the construct "objective knowledge", he is not talking about satisfaction.

After reading a number of questions on RG, I have created a simple program to illustrate how one might model the evolution of a disease such as COVID-19 in a population. The parameters (e.g., incubation period, duration, susceptibility, hospitalization, fatality, contacts) are easily adjusted. The decision points are implemented as Boolean function calls (e.g., contagious?, quarantined?, hospitalized?). The coding should be quite easy to understand without excessive details, which might obscure the basic concepts. The assumptions are listed and suggestions for customization are included. I hope that students will find this a helpful springboard for further investigations. The C source and text output are attached.

To my understanding there is a kind of "black box" concerning the development of the disease itself: from its onset to the point when patients get hospitalized. Furthermore some potentially useful information coming from MDs is rarely taken into account. They often describe their patients as suffering from high altitude sickness. High altitude sickness is induced by a lack of oxygen.
During the first days of the disease the lungs are not yet damaged. The destruction of beta-hemoglobine has already been discussed, but this is seldom mentioned when we talk about different ethnic groups; modifications of hemoglobine protecting against Malaria might be the reason for their higher mortality.
A lack of oxygen is called hypoxia. Hypoxia induces the formation of ROS and RNOS. They can directly damage cells, amplify the inflammatory reaction and they act as second messengers in the immune system. It is even known they are related to human coronaviridae, but their role in COVID-19 is poorly taken into account.
Relevant answer
Answer
The COVID-19 infection causes hypoxia by depleting SpO2 level in patients. The hypoxia induces the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) . Another possibility is that the inflammation generated due to viral infection also increase ROS levels. The hypoxia-mediated increase of ROS further induce inflammation in the patients. In both conditions, ROS levels are elevated that further increase the severity of disease.

My hypothesis is that vaccination in infected/hospitalized patients with worsening of covid-19 could cause an increase in the levels of neutralizing antibodies, improving the prognosis and preventing deaths. Even with the bias of treatments with immunosuppressants (anti-inflammatory drugs, for example), the activation of the production of these neutralizing antibodies could be faster since patients have already had previous contact with the virus. In addition, studies show that individuals with long term covid-19 improve symptoms after vaccination. So, why not try this strategy?
Relevant answer
Answer
I do not believe that vaccines weaken the immune system in the beginning, as suggested by Ahmad. On the contrary, studies show that the production of neutralizing antibodies is superior in people vaccinated in coparation to convalescent and infected people.

Seemingly every day there is a new record number of reported Covid-19 coronavirus cases in the U.S. And Friday, which also happened to be National Absurdity Day, was no different. According to the New York Times, November 20 had over 194,000 new reported cases and over 82,000 people hospitalized due to Covid-19. Both incidentally were records.
All of this has been about as surprising as the movie Mars Needs Moms being a box-office flop. The preliminary report from the randomized RECOVERY clinical trial (NEJM JW Infect Dis Sep 2020 and N Engl J Med 2020 Jul 17; demonstrated that 10 days of dexamethasone resulted in a mortality benefit in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, especially those on mechanical ventilation. Investigators at a referral center in Brazil have now performed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of a 5-day course of methylprednisolone (MP) at reducing the mortality of patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
Of 416 patients randomized, 393 (mean age, 55 years) completed follow-up: 194 in the MP arm and 199 in the placebo arm. No patient received remdesivir, anti-IL-6, or anti-IL-1 agents. The most common comorbidities were diabetes, hypertension, and alcohol use disorder. One third of patients were mechanically ventilated. Mortality at day 28 was 37.1% in the MP group and 38.2% in the placebo group. No between-group differences were apparent in mortality at 7 days or 14 days, viral clearance in the upper airways, or need for mechanical ventilation at 7 days. In a subgroup analysis, day-28 mortality was significantly lower with MP versus placebo among patients older than 60 years of age (46.6% vs. 61.9%).

The pandemic has put a reset button on most facets of our lives. This gives us educators a reason to stop and rethink of our path going ahead. The present crisis has shown the importance of e- learning and many of us have been grappling to adapt in this changed learning/ teaching scenario. In this new era of webinars and e- learning, many educators are converting their traditional pedagogy to e - learning and eventually to LMS (Learning management system) platforms. This also is an opportunity to start afresh and create a more contemporary content that can lead to better employ-ability.
Hospitality education, special in South Asia, has long been accused of being lagging in providing up-to-date skills and knowledge that the Industry demands. In response to these challenges, what would be some key changes you could suggest as we begin to return to teaching/ learning, post reopening.

This document provides important information about the complications associated with SARS-CoV-2 infections(COVID-10). However, one aspect that caught our attention was the proportion of hospital infection cases “of the 138 patients, 57(41.3%) were presumed to have been infected in hospital, including 17 patients(12.3%) who were already hospitalized for other reasons and 40 health care workers(HCW)(29%)”. However, some tourists fear that the costs of the implementation of sustainability measures will impact negatively on increasing prices and reducing quality. Is it possible to implement sustainability measures and at the same time keeping prices unchanged or even reducing prices while improving service quality? Can you give some examples?
Relevant answer

very nice question...sustainability can be achieved by reducing the tourist spending and in other words its called over tourism in various destination, and it is one of the most emerging concept in the present scenario and a new and fertile area of research in tourism parlance. Similarly service quality can be one of the prominent tool for achieving sustainability in tourism and hospitality industry. The service quality can be replaced by the new concept called "service encounter" or "moment of truth" .

I have a questionnaire data set of 700 patients hospitalized due to motorcycle injuries, and linked to hospital data.
When we explored the association between daily riding behaviors and injury indicators which include ISS and length of hospitalization, we found many unusual results. For example, riders used to tailgating a big vehicle and used to riding into the “No Motorcycle Lane” when encountering parking buses/cars were less likely to have a serious injury.
I would like to know what the possible problem with the methodology is or how can I interpret these results.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello,
Just giving my opinion here. Did you consider the following :
> Preferred riding speed on highways vs urban environment as speed directly influences crash severity.
> Protective gear usage and quality as riders who take protective precautions i.e helmets, jackets, and follow big vehicles closely might still get away with minor injuries.
> Experience riding is also a huge factor as more experienced rider might have a better sense for their vehicle and its performance (brakes, velocity) and also have developed better reflexes over time.
> The aggressiveness of the rider on the road might not always be related to injury severity as it also depends on individual reflexes and reaction times.
You can always use the above to defend your findings in case you did not collect this information from the questionnaires.

The relationship between vitamin D deficiency, muscle weakness and fall risk is frequently reported in the literature. It is clear that hospitalized individuals are suffering from the lack of sunlight. Dietary intake or absorption of vitamin d from the gut decreases with aging. Can we carry out a study that focuses on vitamin D deficiency on hospital injuries related to the elderly?
Relevant answer
Answer
There is a lot of evidence of the association of low vitamin D levels with a range of adverse health and events in older patients: muscle weakness, falls, fractures, cognitive decline, depression, etc. You will very likely find a relationship between low vitamin D level and injuries. The evidence of a causal relationship is, however, underwhelming in intervention studies. So I would advise to perform an RCT with vitamin D and placebo (or sunlight and placebo!) with injuries (or recovery) as an end point.

Dear Anna,
You should first decide whether you want to use qualitative or quantitative methods. The former are based on job analysis, while quantitative imply a survey to being applied to employers and/or employees. British Skill Survey can help to approach both employers and employees. UK has separate surveys.
There is also literature on graduates skills based on EU projects. See CHEERS and REFLEX surveys. They tried to examine skill mismatch among EU and non-EU countries.

Can anyone suggest any scale of hospitality?
Thanks
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Leila, if I understand your question correctly, the hospitality offered by a luxurious restaurant has no difference compared to the high class accommodation hospitality. The scales could be: excellent-very good-good-average-poor. In order to measure the level of hospitality in a specific restaurant, questionnaires should be addressed to the guests after their meal.
All the best!

Dear Joe and all,
It is my understanding that hospitality is one very attracting and in fact important factor of tourism for tourists to make a visit, enjoy their stay, study cultures and traditions and make contributions to the revenue of that society. It may be the case that tourists may not need social contacts very often while being there but hospitality is needed from services and from providing  information while moving from place to place, and proper answers for questions that are related to cultures and traditions, with out which tourism is a pleasure but with unpleasant issues as well in some cases. Will that not be a hindrance to would be tourists as the issue of non hospitality will damage reputations of destinations? Many societies need tourism as an industry to flourish and provide revenue to their governments.

Have you ever tried to apply a multiple levels of analysis in tourism setting? What kind of tips would you give to a novice in this field? I am planning to look at tourism organizations and investigate their climate for creativity and innovation. Preliminary idea is to use one of the creative climate measurements as a dependent variable and some process variables as IVs. Could you recommend me some readings with regard to the design and analysis within this field? I am thankful for any comments ;-)
Relevant answer
Answer
Well the first thing I notice here is that 'multiple levels of analysis' is not necescarilly multilevel analysis. Specifically, multilevel analysis uses the hierarchy in nested data to see if the variance in the data is explained not just at an individual level, but at a larger level as well.
A famous example of this (and often used) is that off students across europe. Lets say you're interested in how well students are at school. The first level would be the students. Each students' test GPA score can be used to determine how well Europe's kids are really doing. However, usually there are differences not just between students but between classes (because some teachers are simply better than others), between schools (private versus public) and between countries (Sweden usually is much stronger than i.e. Spain on education). All these can be put into different levels in your analysis so that you can say much more precise how much variance is explained at each level (that is how much error in your estimation you can reduce).
In your case, your dependent variable is 'creative climate of the tourism sector'. Independent variables will be proces variables. This fits in a regression (that is if you're going to use survey's to gather data). However, if you're planning to take countries into account you can add a second level: countries. In that case you're first level consists of tourism organizations over all your data. On your second level you split them into countries/regions to try and explain more variance.
As you probably noted by now: multilevel analysis requires nested data and that data has to be 'tangible' nested into eachother: students in a class in a school. This does not work (and I can't stress this enough) for intangible nesting (i.e. attitudes towards national politics nested in attitude towards international politics).
So is multilevel analysis for your study? Depends on your data and your research question.

My research question is:
What are the strategies that hotels’ managers/owners follow to respond to negative posts in social media?
I found that hotels’ response strategies can be classified into four main categories based on two dimensions. This helped me to develop a typology of hotels’ response strategies.
And, because my aim is to build a theory, I used this classification to select my cases. I mean, I have selected three cases that can be classified clearly in the first group, and another three cases that can fit it the second group and so on.
My concern is that each one of these groups includes different hotels with different characteristics (big and small, luxury and budget,....) My argument is that they were grouped based on my research question but I am not too sure if this is acceptable.
Now, are these procedures acceptable if my aim is to build a theory and to make an analytical generalization?

Accommodation is the single most essential part of any stay in a destination. Accordingly, accommodation is available everywhere and forms the foundation of the tourism industry. Regarding their travelling patterns and trip characteristics, travelers choose luxury hotels with a variety of services to budget hotels with limited facilities. During two main school holidays in Iran, New Year and summer, lots of families travel to different parts of the country. Due to the length of these two main school holidays and since during the school holiday, schools are not occupied with students; they may be available for domestic travelers to stay overnight.
Although the facilities and services are so limited, lots of travelers who want to decrease their travel expenses may stay in those prepared schools. The question here is how can we analyse the condition of these schools in order to put them in the list of tourism accommodation?
Relevant answer
Answer
I think if the schools that you referred to, received money from the guests and provided some services to the customers (e.g., breakfast, beds), so these can claim the school as a tourism destination.
