Sir, I was trying to download daily historical data for CMIP5 and CMIP6 GCMs. I planned to download 10 CMIP5 GCM and 12 CMIP6 GCM. However, daily historical data of each predictor variable was around 25-30 gb which include data from the whole world. There are around 20 variables involved in this study. Thus, the datasets become very huge in size. How could I tackle the problem?

It is very difficult to find an exact citation on the first instance and applications in which amoxicillin was used in dentistry, however this article from the British Journal of Dentistry (see Nature article link above) provides the following historical background on the use of antibiotics in general in dentistry that may be useful: "Since the discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic, by Alexander Fleming in 1928 and its subsequent introduction to clinical practice by Florey in 1940, antibiotics have been used extensively in dentistry. Interestingly from a dental perspective, one of the first reports of the clinical effectiveness of penicillin involved the successful treatment of a patient with cellulitis and angular cheilitis." [Lewis, 2008]
From a historical standpoint, this evidence, along with the fact that amoxicillin has rapidly evolved to become a first-line antibiotic in dentistry within the last 80 years per the sources above, suggest that amoxicillin was adopted as an alternative to treatment with penicillin; since the latter had already proven to be effective in dentistry contexts, and the former is effective against a wider range of bacteria. It also suggests that by examining the early uses on penicillin in dentistry, it is possible to deduce where amoxicillin was first applied as well.

hello everyone
I'm writing scenarios with fsc26
however, I have trouble filling the sample sizes in tpl files
so far I just fill the sample sizes with *2 of my empirical sampling sizes (cause my focal species is diploid so pop0=181*2, pop1=24*2)
however, these sample sizes tremendously increase the computation time to almost 1 month (I'm using Linux with 10 cores for each model)
to save computation time, will the estimated parameters be strongly affected by the smaller sample sizes I give in my scenario (e.g., only use half the original sample sizes)?

i am currently trying to create min. volatility portfolios including several indexes. My issue is that i can't just cut the historic stock returns at the last point where all indexes have values as this would drop over 30 years of data.
I am sure that i can somehow predict / estimate the non-existing past returns of the shorter time series.
Can i use AR models on each Time series to predict missing data?

Dear,
I have a dataset of observed temperature data for a small region that I want to use in order to bias correct the RCM data provided by the website "esgf-data.dkrz".
However, in the experiment tab I found "evaluation / historical/ RCP4.5/RCP8.5”.
  • I know this RCP are for future scenarios (not bias corrected) but what are the two others used for?
  • In addition, I don't know which software to use to correct the data?
Logically I should correct the "historical" data experiment based on my observed one then do a projection for the RCP4.5.

Historically, government and philanthropic organizations have been the main sources of funding driving research efforts at academic institutions that enable the generation of fair and unbiased scientific knowledge to the benefit of all its citizens. Institutional oversight ensures strong research- and ethical policy adherence within the borders of its mandate before any research is undertaken or subsequent findings published in formal, peer-reviewed journals. To the fullest extent, this process has resulted in the steady, albeit slow growth of a large, credible scientific knowledge base. Alarmingly, it has become evident that the era of "Big data" has overturned this important scientific paradigm.
The explosion of social media, the proliferation of digital computing devices, and almost universal internet access have resulted in the generation of massive amounts of data that in practice can be analysed by anyone at near real-time speed without institutional or governmental oversight, creating a slew of new ethical challenges. Proprietary algorithms developed by corporate incentives process massive amounts of data to reveal information about emerging social, economic and health trends that inform market strategies and product development. Currently, it is not known to which extent this information is shared or by whom.
These technological advancements offer both opportunity as well as challenges to academic researchers. Given the speed and the amount of data being generated today, are we as academic researchers able to keep up with industry-generated knowledge and standards while bound to the confines and processes of our oversight committees and current funding models? What are the obstacles and opportunities facing the academic research milieu that ensure its relevance in the age of technological advancement? This conversation has just started. Please share your thoughts and ideas below.

If you have the numerator (number of people with relapse) and the denominator (number of people included in the study analysis) in these old papers, then you should be able to generate standard errors/confidence intervals for each paper. If my understanding is correct, that you want a pooled estimate of this information across included studies, consider using software that allows for prevalence/rate/count pooling, such as the metafor package (R) or STATA. Consult your institution's statistician for this, since you will be able to to explain your statistical needs in a more detailed manner to her/him than here.

As for the relative superiority of one tool over the other for a particular design, I have yet to see an attempt to compare each head-on, so the decision to choose one tool over another will depend on your assessment of the contents/utility of each.

The property of mass has never received its formal physics definition using the same method used to define energy, momentum, and force. All definable physics properties can be defined using this method: The definition must be an equation that expresses the defined property in terms of a combination of other properties that have been previously introduced to us by direct empirical evidence. It is necessary to stress the need for dependence upon direct empirical evidence because theoretical physics allows the use of indirect empirical evidence to serve as equally sufficient compared to direct empirical evidence. That decision is the worst decision ever made by theoretical physics. However, the immediate need is to formally define mass in the same manner that would later be correctly used to define energy, momentum, and force.
Mass is the connection between direct empirical evidence and all of the rest of physics. Mass must be given its formal physics definition to perform its natural function of communicating the guidance provided by direct empirical evidence to all the rest of physics.

Thank you for replying. A change in momentum is a measurement. Measurement does not form a definition of a property. A property definition does not include a method for measuring the property. For example, the definition of energy is E=fd. We learn that energy is a sum total of the product of force and distance. However, the only measurements included in that definition are measurements of force and distance. Neither is energy.
General Relativity lacks any direct empirical support for its two pillars, i.e., time-dilation and space-contraction. It is a source for learning theoretical physics. Theoretical physics is loose physics with regard to interpretations being supported by direct empirical evidence.
General Relativity avoids defining force with the equation f=ma because the same theoretical physics that invented General Relativity failed at the beginning of physics equations to define the property of mass. Without that definition, the definitions of energy, momentum, and force are left vacant of reason. General Relativity offers no explanation of what is energy, momentum, or force.
The equations that are supported by direct empirical evidence, such as E = fd = mad, P = ft = mat, and f=ma, do explain what these properties are.
Mass is pervasive in physics equations after its introduction in f=ma. One either knows what mass is by following the lead provided by its direct empirical evidence or one must avoid mass. Facing up to it would require explaining what mass is. That has never happened yet in mainstream physics.
F=dp/dt is a circular definition which is no definition. Momentum p has already been defined using force, i.e., p=ft, or, by p = mv. The equation p = ft is a definition because it describes a constant force being applied against an object during a period of time. The equation p = mv is not a definition because it describes only the sum total that results from the process 'ft' that changes the sum total of momentum.
More to the point is your statement that "General relativity does not use f = ma as definition of force. So mass is not used to define the force." No one gets past defining mass at the time that f=ma is introduced to us if they are going to learn what it is that direct empirical evidence is attempting to reveal to us. Anyone can get past defining mass if they are going to learn what it is that theoretical physics is attempting to reveal to us.

But if you want to resample your fresh data due to compareable reason: Pythons datetime object and the groupby object in combination with the resample method is made for it. :) Just in case :)

I am applying PLAPS rate on my SWAT model under climate scenarios, and I am applying a PLAPS rate of 2.1 mmH2O/km in the historical period (1981-2019) does not have big impact on the precipitation trend (i.e. the precipitation decadal averages from raw pcp files are very similar to pcp taken from std file which is expected).
However when the model start the future values (2020-2099) the decadal average of pcp from raw files start to look different from the pcp files obtained from SWAT std file (in other words the pcp obtained from SWAT showes a big jumps) while my understanding that they should remain with the same trend? any suggestion where the problem might be?

Unfortunately the personal notebooks which were kept throughout that period were destroyed. The process of ‘PhD by Practice’ is dramatically different from the ’Traditional PhD’ process, approach and requirements.

That would give us some probabilistic answers about the near future.
History is not a precise science, and you need to use math (precise science) to calculate or graph direction.
I specialize in analyzing humankind and its history from complex systems (which is a precise science) viewpoint. The websites I have found give 24-hr rainfall totals, but are not delineated from 0000 to 2400 hrs (whole calendar days). Instead, they relate the metrics from, say, rainfall falling within 1730hrs to 1730hrs on different calendar days, presumably the times when personnel actually checked the gauges.

I am using the quantile delta method for bias correction of future rainfall data (NA-CORDEX).
As my observed data are point (station) wise CSV files. I have extracted for corresponding locations. All the annual average value for both historical, future and observed rainfall seems fine which comes ~1000-1500 mm. Boxplot for unique rainfall values in historical, future model, and observed data are attached. Here, on wet days, the minimum value for observed data is 2.54 mm.
I found bias-corrected rainfall annual data is 20 times larger than the raw data ( Which I have checked with other approached too like mixed distribution having gamma distribution, Gamma Quantile Mapping, and found nearly the same result). This seems an unrealistic result.
Does anyone get such results or I am doing it in the wrong way?

Okay, this means that you have to adapt the threshold for rainy days (could e.g. be 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm that it corresponds roughly to the frequency of the observations). After that, you can apply the QM and the values of the modelled wet days should be increased and reach those of the observations.

I want to model response to climate change for several crops, including tree crops, for assessment of country-wide impact of climate change on agriculture by over three different hydro-climatic zones (for arid climate in middle east). What approach is best where I have very little data for calibration/validation?
Historical irrigation water use data are almost are inconsistent and unreliable so it is very difficult to establish historic water use, so I am very concerned how to validate them model.
Available data:
- historical and simulated future daily weather
- soil texture and other basic soil data.
- historical yields from survey data (very unreliable)
- approximate planting dates
Not available:
- historic irrigation application
- crop varieties
- historic fertiliser use
Can I use a model, such as EPIC, or APSIM, WOFOST, (or another simple model but it has to include tree crops) with generic crop types? What assumptions do I use about crop types, fertiliser use, historic water use etc in the baseline.
If I can't validate the model or only very poorly, is there a precedent where the simulated impact of climate change on yields and water use can still stand up to scrutiny on the basis of some assumed baseline historical water use and yield?

Sirius is a double star. The companion was discovered at Dearborn Observatory where I did my undergraduate work. Also, Prof. Karl G. Henize, an astronomy professor at Northwestern University where the observatory is located, was principal investigator of an experiment on the Gemini 12 flight that used a “70-mm general-purpose camera equipped with a 73-mm ultraviolet lens, a 10-degree objective prism in a cell which attached to the ultraviolet lens, and a reflection grating in a cell which attached to the ultraviolet lens” (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Gemini Mission Program Report Gemini XII, MSC-G-R-57-1, January 1967) to obtain spectra of stars in the wavelength from 2000 to 4000 angstroms, just below the range for visible light. Hello everyone,
for our project we need a source for temperature data fulfilling following criteria:
1. we need historical hourly temperature data
2. a whole year has to be covered (ideally a recent year, like, e.g. 2019) --> perfect would be a csv-file with 8760/8784 time stamps, each containing a temperature value
3. The data should be available for any geographical position worldwide (at least for any land location, where you could imagine a business or an industrial plant, since we need the data for calculations regarding these types of building)
4. The data should be for free
5. The data should be allowed for the use within a commercial application
6. In the first step, one dataset for a specific location, downloaded manually is enough. In the long run, we need to get the data for many different locations with a python-function within our project
It is quite difficult, to find a website that fulfills all these criteria. For instance, the NOAA site gets very close to our requirements. However, the data only covers the USA and it has to be requested and then gets sent per mail. We need, however, data for any continent, and we want to automate the process of getting the data from the website. This site wunderground, on the other hand, only provides hourly data for a single day, but not for a year.
Does someone know a website, that fulfills ALL the criteria, where we can get these data from?

You can also retrieve the historic global/national level hydrometeorological data (e.g runoff, rainfall etc) from the ERA5 data archive.
The ERA data archives climatic data on a global/national level for a period of 40 years and above. The ERA5 is the fifth generation ECMWF reanalysis for the global climate and weather for four decades (1979- till date). The data has been re-gridded to a regular Lat-Lon grid of 0.25 degrees for the reanalysis.
The hydrometeorological data are available in hourly, and monthly products. Both on pressure levels (upper air fields) and single levels (atmospheric, and land surface quantities).

If you look at JSTOR a simple search can be filtered by date, so from 1991 to 2010 a search of 'Chernyshevsky revolution' yields 190 results, while from 1971 to 1990 it yields 329. If really interested in the question you would want to examine the material qualitatively in more detail but that suggests that academic interest has lessened. At first glance this looks a little faster than might be accounted for simply by decreasing relevance due to the passage of time, so perhaps there has been a re-evaluation in some subfield.
