It is required to do thermal analysis of worm gear. Since worm gear produce lot of heat, it is decided to fill the worm gear box with oil. I was able to calculate heat produced in gear to friction. However I am really confused how to determine the temperature of oil surrounding gears. I tried using Q=m.s.dt, however I think not all heat generated get transferred to oil. I tried using Fourier method as well, but I got temperature so high that I found it ridiculous. Can anyone provide me the calculation method assuming any data if required. The only data I have is that gear require 5kW input power and the efficiency if 65%.
Relevant answer
Answer
Greetings
The temperature of oil can be measured using temperature sensors like a thermometer or a digital temperature gauge, or calculated using mathematical equations based on the physical properties of the oil if it is part of a thermal process.

Using FGMs in the production of gears offers significant advantages in terms of wear resistance, thermal properties, mechanical performance, stress distribution, corrosion resistance, design flexibility, and long-term cost efficiency. These benefits make FGMs an attractive choice for high-performance and specialized gear applications where traditional materials may fall short. The ability to customize material properties precisely where needed allows for the development of gears that can withstand extreme conditions and deliver superior performance over their operational life.

Dear Igor Sbovoda and Dmytro Lande
I read your paper
Enhancing Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis with AI: Integrating Analytic Hierarchy Process and GPT-4 for Automated Decision Support
My comments
1- First of all, l was pleasantly surprised by the subject of your paper; it appears to be the first, at least for me, to incorporate AI in MCDM
2- In page 2 you say, referring to AHP “This method was designed to address complex decision-making scenario”
Not in my opinion. It was designed according to a lineal hierarchical structure that is not adequate to model a complex scenario.
The pivotal moment you refer is inexact. At the time of its appearance there were other MCDM methods addressing complex problems, starting 1n 1948
You say: “providing a rigorous framework for decomposing decision problems into a hierarchy of more easily comprehended sub-problems, each of which can be analyzed independently”
Breaking a problem is useful to understand it, but not for solving, and I am afraid that they cannot be analyzed independently because normally they are related according to the Systems Theory, and thus, they are normally interconnected. It is like for designing a car you study independently the engine, the transmission, the aerodynamics, the electric system, etc., but all of them are related. The engine depends on the aerodynamic of t he body, depends on the electricity consumed by the car and from the mechanics of the transmission, that is the gear box and cardan shaft
A MCDM problem is a system, and as that it cannot be solved adding up the best results of each part. The whole is generally no equal to the sum of the parts.
3- You say “specially designed format that facilitates a forced choice paired comparison, enabling decisionmakers to systematically evaluate the importance of each criterion against others”
Pair-wise comparison is not normative but descriptive, and as that irrational. On what grounds can you assert that criterion C3 is 3 times greater than criterion C1? Only on the DM intuition, mood or imagination. Nothing scientific indeed
4- “Its unique capability to merge mathematical precision”
How can you say that a method based on intuitions and feelings, has mathematical precision?
5- As you said, the GPT is trained at large data, which is the heart of AI. However, even when your idea of using GPT is indeed revolutionary and very interesting, apparently it does not take into account that in MCDM, each problem, even on the same subject of another one, can be different.
And this is because it is true that you can get valuable information on the type and number of criteria using GPT, but don’t forget that in real practice those are determined based on the series of alternatives they will must evaluate, and as you know, this is opposite to the AHP procedure, that first selects the criteria.
The GPT most probably can give you information linking criteria to alternatives, but it is for me unprovable that those may coincide with your case.
Consequently, if a company decides to analyze three different projects, the DM must know first which are the projects, and then, go to the technical person that in the company is responsible for each area, as engineering, finances, costs, etc. It is them who know the problem and can tell the DM which is the criteria that for each individual point of view should be considered. It is from them, after many meetings and discussions, that normally take into account personal interests, that the final set of criteria is established. This is something that the GPT cannot do.
You have to work with a unique organization, not with the average of 1000, because the number of stakeholders, their ideas, their needs, their wishes and their interest are not condensed in a set given by GPT.
Remember that in despite of the tremendous experience we have on agriculture, we are still unable to predict the volume of the next harvesting or even predict when it is going to rain in adequate amounts for crops
6- Something that you did not mention is that AHP demands independent criteria, something that practically does not exist in the real world. How do you query GPT about this? Will you ask it to select criteria that satisfy this condition? If you do not input your alternatives, how it will know that must adjust to such stringent condition? , albeit you did not to worry for it if you work with ANP.
It appears from your questions to GPT that you are maximizing everything. How do you proceed if you have to minimize a criterion like ‘cost’, together with 10 or 15 more criteria?
7- In page 6 you do not detail detail the final criteria. Curiously, don’ you think that communications as well as back up systems are missing? Common sense tells you that that is fundamental
8- In page 6 you asked a machine for subjective values? How can a machine do that? It only got a set of real values and it is unable to intuit anything; that is for human and may be for animals.
9- In gage 13 you talk about matrix consistency. Could you please explain why the estimates of a person must be consistent or transitive? Who says that?
And most important, is there an axiom or theorem that demonstrates that what is the mind of persons is replicable in the real world, which is in general intransitive?
I hope my comments may help you

wanted to know What is the requirement for gear train design
& gear design & devlopments
Relevant answer
Answer
Gear train design involves the selection and arrangement of gears to transmit motion and power between rotating shafts. The requirements for gear train design include various factors to ensure the efficiency, durability, and smooth operation of the system. Here are some key considerations:
  1. Transmission Ratio:Determine the required speed and torque ratios between input and output shafts. This is crucial for achieving the desired mechanical advantage and matching the speeds of connected components.
  2. Power Transmission:Calculate the power to be transmitted through the gear train. Ensure that the gears selected can handle the required torque without failure.
  3. Type of Gears:Choose the appropriate type of gears based on the application. Common types include spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, and worm gears. The choice depends on factors such as the direction of rotation, efficiency, and noise considerations.
  4. Gear Materials and Heat Treatment:Select materials for the gears based on the application's demands for strength, wear resistance, and durability. Consider heat treatment processes to enhance the mechanical properties of the gears.
  5. Speed and Load Conditions:Analyze the operating conditions, including the speed and load variations, to ensure that the gear train can handle both normal and peak conditions without failure.
  6. Alignment and Center Distance:Ensure proper alignment of gears and determine the correct center distance between gear axes. Misalignment can lead to increased wear, noise, and reduced efficiency.
  7. Gear Ratios and Arrangement:Choose gear ratios that best suit the application. Consider the arrangement of gears, such as parallel shafts, intersecting shafts, or non-parallel and non-intersecting shafts, based on spatial constraints and design requirements.
  8. Noise and Vibration Considerations:Address noise and vibration issues by selecting gear types and tooth profiles that minimize these effects. Helical gears, for example, tend to reduce noise compared to spur gears.
  9. Lubrication:Ensure proper lubrication to minimize friction and wear. Select appropriate lubricants and consider the design of lubrication systems for the gear train.
  10. Manufacturability and Cost:Design gears with manufacturability in mind, considering the available manufacturing processes and cost constraints. Optimize the gear geometry to balance performance and cost-effectiveness.
As for gear design and development, it involves the detailed geometric and kinematic analysis of individual gears. This includes tooth profile design, backlash considerations, tooth strength analysis, and tooth surface finish. Computer-aided design (CAD) tools and simulation software are often employed to refine gear designs before prototyping.
Overall, successful gear train design requires a holistic approach that considers mechanical, geometric, and environmental factors to ensure a reliable and efficient system.

Hi,
I'm interested in AI applications as applied to Ham Radio. Specifically, I'm interested in which manufacturers have or will soon have advanced capabilities in their kit. These capabilities can be any of the following:
  1. Signal classification and recognition: My interest is in advanced kit that automatically identifies and filters unwanted signals above and beyond current DSP capabilities. My major interest in this area is for automated logging and reporting of contacts.
  2. Antenna design and optimization: AI can be used to analyze complex antenna designs and optimize their performance for specific operating conditions. Are any manufacturers actually doing this? What products are available now or in the near future? I'm gearing up to buy some new kit and want to experiment with the cutting edge.
  3. Propagation prediction: AI can be used to predict radio propagation conditions based on historical data and real-time weather and solar activity information. From an efficiency perspective, I'm interested in optimizing operating frequencies and antenna configurations.
  4. Automatic speech recognition and translation: AI-powered speech recognition technology can be used to transcribe and translate voice communications in real-time. As an operator, I'd like to be able to communicate across language barriers.
  5. Contesting and DXing: AI algorithms can be used to optimize operating strategies for contesting and DXing, including automated station optimization, band selection, and frequency tuning. I'm not as interested in this area but want to understand "possibilities".
  6. Other? What's out there that's not on my radar yet?

I would like to measure the chemical content of a gear surface to a depth of 1 mm. But there is a problem because the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (xps) method that I will use can only reach depths of a few nano.
Is there a possible method in spectroscopy to analyse the chemical content layer by layer of a metal up to a few millimetres thick?
Relevant answer
Answer
Thank you for your suggestions.
This sample is made of steel, which if cut each layer into a new surface for measurements up to 1 mm, it will certainly affect the microstructure due to heat and cutting force.
I thought of taking a side view of the sample surface. Then shoot a beam at the surface and shift the incident beam for each layer in micrometer steps. I don't know yet if these incident rays are smaller in diameter or equal to a few micrometers in size?

thanks for feed back.
A factor of two seems to be an error of a missing or a surplus '2' in one of the formulae.
It is long time ago when I dealt with these things.
As I remember, the light intensity I passing a polariscope is given by some kind of I ~ sin2(pi*deltaP/lambda) function,
with deltaP as the path difference of the optical wave components polarized in x and y direction:
deltaP = C*(stressx-stressy)*d;
C= photoelastic constant, d= geometrical length of optical pathway.
However; you might rewrite sin2(alpha) ; alpha=pi*deltaP/lambda
by sin2(alpha) = 0,5*[1-cos(2*alpha)].
Here an additional factor of two arises.
This '2' might unfortunately fail or go erroneously go into your calculations.
Please check your formulae...
Good luck and

I have calculated the gear meshing frequency of planetary gearbox to be 786 Hz. However, when a FFT is performed on the data acquired for the same planetary gearbox I could see peak around 645 Hz and not at 786 Hz.
The calculated mesh frequency was done based on the speed and number of teeth. But the signals acquired during operation was under loaded condition.
Does external load change the natural frequency and meshing frequency of gear?
Is there any reference to calculate the theoretical gear mesh frequency in relationship with load.
Attached FFT plot.
Thanks in advance for sharing you knowledge.
Relevant answer
Answer
Gear meshing frequency is a kinematic (rotation speed-related) parameter. If you have another maximum in the spectrum under loading conditions, this effect can probably be related to another source (gear coupling or bearing). Of course, if you have reduced rotation speed under load (motor power drop), you will have shifted the frequency of gear meshing.

I understand there will be exact multiple of fundamental frequency based bearing rotation with respect to fundamental, based on gear rotation with respect to fundamental. But what exactly means for multiples of bearing rotations, multiples of blade passes like 1x, 2x, 3x etc.,
Relevant answer
Answer
Honestly, it depends...
It depends on the specific machinery and source mechanism.
It can be nonlinearities in the system (e.g., nonlinearities in linear drives like speakers), it can be (periodic) elements in the system (e.g. number of teeth in gears), it can be wear in components (which needs to be periodic on rotating parts, e.g. higher harmonics on railcar wheels - polygonalization), it can be impulsive behaviour triggered periodically by a rotating part (e.g. combustion impulses in internal combustion engines), it can be linearly moving parts that are not rotating (e.g. pistons), it can be some additional higher order torque components from inbalances, ...
The key point is that for all of these processes (except of some non-linearities that might generate subharmonics), you can only get integer multiples of the base period.
Nevertheless, it is important to mind the base period. For a 4-stroke engine, for example, this is 2 rotations, which is why you might also find "half orders" at internal combustion engines (and only full and half orders, no third or something...).

Electric Vehicles are gaining acceptability all over the world . Further, carbon emission concerns could bring in policy changes in future, thus, hampering the growth of IC based vehicles. EVs could be disruptive in nature slowly killing the market . If that scenario is going to take place, how would the leading manufactures and their ancillary units are going to gear up for the future. I request learned members to provide answers to this critical question which is going to impact the existing auto ecosystem.
Relevant answer

I think the major car manufacturers already have at least one or two electric car models (I cannot actually name each of them for I don't know that much.) But I understand the strategy is that "good amounts of net profits from market IC cars is going into R&D, innovation side of the electric vehicles which is definitely a good sign that they are getting ready for the shift." The rise in jobs for power electronics and electrical machines within electric vehicle sector also signifies this fact. Personally, I was getting many calls from automotive sector as an electrical engineer.
But I think we need to see the numbers of new refineries or extensions that are happening all over the world too in terms of new projects. This shows us how much is going into investing under petroleum refineries. but that can be again for textiles or chemical manufacturing.
The shift from IC to EV will take longer in developing countries as everyone knows, that way, the major car manufacturers know that they still need to innovate in IC vehicles as well.
I want to know if anyone gives statistics for some of my answers. I can evaluate my approach towards it then!

Islamic Money
During the period of prophet (may peace be on him) not only Dinar and Dirham but also some homogenous commodities e.g., wheat and barley and dates were used as money. These derived their purchasing power from their intrinsic value. This continued during the period of Khulfae Rashidun (may Allah be pleased to them). Dinar and Dirham are most stable single commodity based measures of value and these were used as common medium of exchange and Shariah used these in description of its universal provisions. Thus these were used as measure of value and unit of account, and store of value and there is no disagreement on these issues. Sale on credit and Riba free loans Musharikah and Mudarabah were in practice, Riba was strictly prohibited and Zakah was imposed and these constituted the most important features of monetary and financial system of Islam. Therefore those who hold that Islam has no preferred monetary/financial system are clearly wrong.
Nothing other than common medium of exchange can perform measure of value function of money. However to perform as a measure it must be a highly reliable and stable measure of value/purchasing power. Shariah ordains utmost care to ensure just measurement and thus to be held to be Shariah compliant common medium of exchange must have most stable value. We may not emphasize other conditions as fulfillment of this condition normally ensures satisfactory performance of other functions. This ensures economic justice and efficient Market as well as allocative efficiency. Further other forms of money should be allowed restricted use to fulfill such other monetary needs of the economy that need to be met to ensure that monetary constraints do not hamper economic growth. Price as well as purchasing power of everything varies with respect to anything else due to relative changes in supply and demand. Purchasing power is normally measured with respect to a representative basket of national product. As regards freely floating fiat money a defined representative basket of national product is the right measure of its value and thus constancy of purchasing power of freely floating fiat money as normally determined implies that it will discharge the measure of value function of money efficiently. It follows that economic justice and growth in a non-exploitative (Reba free) economic system requires that monetary and fiscal policy be geared to ensure nil rate of inflation.

Currently, the records the eastern Libyan waters spread of the lionfish via reports posted on social media.
We understand that monitor and sampling campaigns are a powerful tool to increase databases for invasive species in the Libyan waters, also it's one effective way to quickly studies more of this species.
Sampling campaigns are a quick and simple way to increase knowledge about the successful establishment of the lionfish Pterois miles in Med waters . They allow researchers to collect a large amount of information in a short amount of time and help to get the most environmental awareness for local fisher.
We are launching a sample collection campaign for Lion fish in the Cyrenaica coast in the Libyan waters, given the fast nature of lionfish colonization , monitoring its invasive status, requires some special equipment's, samples are required to confirm the precise identity of the lionfish in question.
This equipment is not available in Libya.
Did you know where we can find an assortment of lionfish hunting gear and accessories free of charge? OR If Can anyone help us to provide this equipment free of charge.

Answer
Dearest Adbulghani,
if you simply need to capture specimens of Pterois sp. to make a correct determination of the species you need a simple net (like the one used to catch butterflies) and / or a hand harpoon.
They are not technically advanced tools but very simple to make.
To make a homemade net, all you need is a long stick that acts as a handle, a few meters of wire and a couple of square meters of net (the fishing one is fine).
making a harpoon by hand is even simpler because you just need to attach a harpoon to the long stick that I used to connect to you (but also a kitchen fork) and you will have obtained your harpoon.
Where I come from, with these simple ingredients the kids build quite effective fishing tools. In fact, the Pteriois sp. they are quite static and easy to catch fish.

There are several barriers that hinders the transition to a circular economy. Among the barriers include supply chains which needs to be redesigned in order to align or facilitate smooth transition. The question is geared towards understanding the current research directions as far as supply chains are concerned
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Ismaila Bojang,
Redesigning supply chains in order to develop a circular economy may be correlated with the ongoing processes of shortening international, including intermodal supply chains, taking place under the influence of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic situations of disrupting these mainly international supply chains. In a circular economy, supply logistics chains should be as short as possible to reduce transport costs. There should be a return to the concept of self-sustaining cities known from centuries ago. The issue of self-sufficiency of urban agglomerations should apply to energy, food products and other types of products and services. The energy sector should be based on renewable energy sources, transport should be based on electromobility, waste management should take into account well-developed recycling and efficient waste sorting systems, etc. Logistic chains should be as short as possible and only few, some could extend beyond the area of the municipal agglomeration commune.

We nitride 15-5PH stainless steel for aircraft landing gear at 405 degrees for 70 hours to get a case depth of 40 microns. We have noticed on testing that we get spallation and wear of the case. We tested a component with a 20 micron case under the same conditions and it performed much better (almost no wear). Could someone provide an explanation of this effect?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Sam,
At first glance, the differences between the wear performance of two nitrided surfaces could be attributed to their phase structure (i.e. presence and size of CrN precipitates). Coarser CrN precipitates could play a crucial role in spalling. But, you should provide much more details about the second nitriding process, and also more information about the structure of two nitrided surfaces should be given.

Hello Ekta,
You have experimental group and Control group. You want to teach both groups the same content usuing two different methods (one for each). Then you want to compare thier academic achievement (outcome).
What is the nature of your outcome measure? Are you setting a test score over 100% (continuous variables)?
What effect size do you require large or moderate?
Then download a G*power version 3.10, sample size calculation software.
Select t-test between subjects, put your desired effect size, alpha level 0.5, power 95% and calculate your required sample size.

In my workplace, radiology department in children's hospital, all staff wear a clear face visor with a Disney/cartoon character attached at the top (above your head) which is laminated and therefore wipeable with disinfectant. We have some masks with the clear panel over the mouth, used for people who lipread, these are also better for children to see your smile.
With a full covered face mask where staff have to use more eye expression it is actually a bit more exhausting keeping up the happy smiley face more !
We have in-house made cloth face masks (folded type) made in bright colourful material, given to patients and guardians (who can wear them) as they enter the hospital, so everyone has the same, they can bring their own face covering, of course.
It is a shame that most of our little toys have been removed from use (the big toys are constantly disinfected) and the usual nice things we have going on are currently on hold, eg: musicians, story tellers, magicians, balloon sculptors, visiting celebs etc

Imagine a platoon, such as the "peloton" in a cycling competition or cars on a highway, where the players benefit from travelling close to each other due to wind drag reduction. If each speed would be determined by the optimal operating points stemming from their bikes, aerodynamics and body. For example, player 1, might be optimal (in terms of fuel efficiency) at a specific gear and given a specific cadence. Each player will propose changes to each other, such that each one will give a proposal to the player(s) which are obstructing its optimal trajectory. Negotiations, from say player 2 to player 1 (where player 1 is in front of player 2) such as "pedal 1 m/s faster and you'll get 1 buck", where the new speeds and compensations will be calculated individually from each cyclist such that the prize is lower than the potential "fuel cost" that player 2 would experience from operating at non optimal speeds. These proposals are then accepted or denied. I'm thinking that these proposals should then converge to some optimum where no members in the platoon will benefit from changing its strategy, hence a kind of Nash equilibrium.
I'm fairly new to game theory, but I want to formulate this problem as a game theoretical one, to see where these proposals would converge, and how to prove it. How would I begin?

Very interesting results, although based on my own research I suspect that the actual mechanisms for the observed effects have to do with induction of systemic resistance by exposure to the conidia, rather than the actual endophytism presence. Lots of microorganisms have been shown to induce SR in a wide range of plants, and this phenomenon has become accepted in the plant pathology community. Also, I have to note my gears that EU regulators are getting very nervous about the endophytic nature of these entomopathogenic fungi and the metabolites they may be releasing. I fear that EU, and maybe even USEPA, too, will increase data requirements for registration, data to reflect the safety of produce colonized by Beauveria etc. We already saw this with the Austrian uproar about oosporein released into the environment in infected pasture grubs. Considerable research hard to demonstrate that they amount of this metabolite was of no concern, and registration of a Beauveria was greatly delayed.

Best method was a foliar spray using a good wetting agent and, in the lab, 24 hours of incubation at ~100% humidity. I got good field establishment with foliar sprays but with a formulation that is at present proprietary, until USDA patent issues. Optimal stage of wheat (accommodating timing of infestation by the sawfly at late stem elongation, esp. 3 node stage) was late tillering but before elongation. Again, seed treatments just did not work, nor did root dips, no matter what we tried. And again I caution about insufficient plant decontamination. I believe many published reports are biased because, in reality, the plants were not properly decontaminated of surface fungus residues. I have proven for myself that the QC step of plating the second water rinse, as given in many papers, is misleading. Only leaf impressions, stem rolls on PDA is sufficient QC step.

Dear professional people,
I have a very tricky motor I want to control but I cannot release the brake cuz it is tight and manufacturer does not care to give proper detail.
Here are the specs:
Motor Specifications:
  • Brushless DC motor
  • 25V, 50A capacity (Need to confirm again)
  • Rated 600W, continuous 400W
  • 3 phase 6 pole Hall element
  • 18 pulses per rotation
1. 25V at 50A, they said the motor could go up to 100A according to the plot they showed us. The value is referred as the Input power. I saw in the motor specification the Torque is 2.01 Nm.
2. The Electric Brake is tricky. First you need to supply 24V at around 0.54A and then it can be decreased. Since there is some current protection, the positive (+) terminal is the one connected to pin 4 of connector CN5/D from FD Base Controller.
3. In other picture you can see the tire diameter of 260 mm. And the gear ratio of 1/27 and then the motor. No additional gear ratio to consider. 18 pulses per revolution ( 967 pulse or 6kph)
4. No data for Thermal ratio. However, there is a 10kohm thermistor that is used for temperature sensing. If I am not wrong, if current is around 45A ( never happened) the base will shut down.
5. Max rpm of 4750

Hi everyone,
Few days ago we released a male bottlenose dolphin entangled in fishing gear remains in Ecuador. Although we have noticed before some deformities in the tail of this animal, it is just until now we could see them in more detail and take pictures. We noticed the tail of this animal was damaged and deformed three years ago when he was hurt apparently by a boat propeller.
Flukes surface and borders were covered with dozens of hard nodules of different size (2-10 cm in diameter) where fishing gear remains was hooked producing blooding wounds. Nodules look firm, well defined, covered with skin and did not appear externally infected. On flukes surface nodules tended to spread. There is no particular pigmentation, although in those nodules in the borders the skin was pealed off. No nodules were noticed in other parts of the dolphin's body. It is not clear how serious is this particular condition but apparently it does not interfered with his normal activities. Up to 2018 this and other male companion were the males with highest rank in this dolphin community.
A video of the dolphin rescue with close up images can be seen in this link:

The question I have here is related to the torque. I have calculated torque for a mass of 300 kg as 700 Nm for a rotational speed of 300 rpm. (I only need a maximum speed of 10 Kph). Is it possible to use a 500 W motor with speed 2000 rpm, and reduce the speed via a gear or a pulley to 300 rpm thereby increasing the torque ??? Thanks in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Sheik S M,
A specification of 700 N.m at 300 rpm yields a power of 22 kW. There is no way you would be able to generate 22 kW with a motor who's rated power is 0.5 kW.
We can also take it the other way:
A 500 W motor at speed 2000 rpm yields a torque of 2.4 N.m.
Reduce the speed with a gear by 6.67 and you get 300 rpm. Ideally, the gear outputs a torque of 2.4*6.67 = 16 N.m, far from 700 N.m. You would need a lot more current to reach 700 N.m, overheating and burning your motor.

Ok, I'll try and keep this short: For the few of you who might know me, I'm a English grad student at West Chester University, and I'm currently in the middle of writing my MA thesis. One of the key components to my research will be a survey of gamers in the Metal Gear community, looking at perceptions of in-game morality and the potential for player-character/character-player transferability of morality.
Here's the problem - as I've already noted, I'm in the English department, so it'll be pretty easy for you all to assume that mathematics isn't necessarily my strong suit, let alone the analysis of data and statistics. I was wondering if anybody is aware of a good resource, either online or as a physical text (hopefully reasonably priced), that can actually teach me the fundamentals of interpreting the data when the time comes. I'm sure there's a "...For Dummies" book out there, but in my experience those aren't always necessarily the best option. Any help in this matter is deeply appreciated.

This is obviously quite early stage, but I'd appreciate the odd pointer in the right direction.

Thanks for the recommendation - I have read the paper very closely yes - I've referenced about 40 of the most important articles in my literature review.
Barbara Flügge That would be ideal, but I'm not sure about the time that would take - My thinking so far is of looking at scales developed in questionnaires already deployed as they would have demonstrable relevance and I could compare results etc.
Gavin D. J. Harper Thanks for your advice - I think response rates tend to be around 10% if I'm not mistaken, and as I'm looking for about 100 responses, I think an online questionnaire might be the best if I could find enough people to target. Do you think a 15 minute questionnaire is a good time to aim for?

Hello, everyone.
I am modelling a self-blocking worm gear in adams. I have two questions:
1. does the reference diameter in the fig.1 mean pitch diameter of the worm gear? I find the the explanation in the adams document that
"Adams Machinery will issue a warning if the user entered helix angle lies ±0.5o beyond the correct helix angle given by formula:
tan-1 (module*(number of teeth or number of start on WORM) /
WORM reference diameter))."
it is consuing for me.
2. I try the self-blocking parameters for the worm gear, but the worm gear is still able to move even if i put the friction coeffient very large like 10 or 20. I am not sure that if there is a bug in adams.
thanks for you time.

Hi, I solved this problem.
1. it is better to work in the unity system mm.
2. we need to introduce the friction at the revolute joint where the worm gear is attached. then it works

I have a deep groove ball bearing (NSK make). I wish to introduce artificial faults in the outer race and inner race such that I can study their signal characteristics. I am facing two situations:
  1. EDM is not available at our workshop. Kindly suggest other methods which can be applied (or is generally applied) to create the faults (spall, holes etc.).
  2. Another issue I am facing is regarding the dismantling of the bearing. The bearing has steel riveted cage, so once I dismantle the bearing, the cage gets destroyed and the bearing cannot be reassembled for my analysis. What is the standard procedure adopted by researchers in such situations?

Hey,
I'm simulating the contact of two moving gears in ANSYS Workbench (Static Structural) with multiple load steps and would like to evaluate the stresses in a radial cross section to better see stresses underneath the surface .
Is there a method in ANSYS Workbench to evaluate the stresses across a cross section? I know you can make a section cut of the simulated bodies with the options in the bottom right corner, but is there a way to create an additional stress result on that cut surface?
From searching for the problem on the internet I gathered that it might be possible to do with cutting the body prior to the simulation in e.g. Design Modeler and then create a result on the cut surface. I tried that and it works but I get some weird stress concentrations in the cut region that were not there before cutting the gear bodies. I also heard somewhere that it should be possible to do in APDL, but I didn't find any example of that.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Regards
Paul

I asked this same question in another forum (https://studentcommunity.ansys.com/thread/stress-on-radial-cross-section-of-gears/) as well and got a working answer from user peteroznewman there, so I thought I'll just cite it here for later reference.
In Mechanical, RMB on Coordinate Systems and create a new Coordinate System whose XY plane is the plane you want to plot stress on. I assume you know how to rotate a Coordinate System about an axis using the toolbar.  RMB on Model and Insert > Construction Geometry.  RMB on Construction Geometry and Insert > Surface.  On the Coordinate System line for that surface, select the Coordinate System you just made.
RMB on Solution and Insert > Stress > whichever one you want. In the Details window for that stress, change the Scoping Method from Geometry to Surface. That's it.

I did this process base on the following link:
  1. Open up settings and then go to WiFi.
  2. Now, you will see a gear on the top of this screen, click it. But if you don’t see it, look for “Configure WiFi” option and click it. Some Android system have Advanced option in WiFi, MAC address can be found there also.
  3. Voila ! You can find the MAC address on the bottom of this screen. Keep a note of it.
  4. In order to get the interface name, you will have to install Terminal Emulator for Android. Go to Google Play Store and download it or click the link to get it.
  5. Once you download it, install it and open up.
  6. Type the following command : ip link
    1. You screen will be filled with lot of information, useful and useless. Now, remember I told you to keep a note of your MAC address. Just look for this MAC address under “link/ether” for all the cases.
    2. The one that matches our MAC address, is the connection name. For most of the devices it is either “wlan0” or “eth0”.
Now, that we know our MAC address and the connection name, we can go on to change the MAC address with this terminal emulator only. Before that you should have a valid MAC address in your mind or generate one from this link. Once, you have a new MAC address, just get on with the below steps:
  • Launch the Terminal Emulator
  • Just type the following command: ip link set wlan0 address XX:XX:XX:YY:YY:YY, where wlan0 is the name of the interface and XX:XX:XX:YY:YY:YY is the MAC address you want to set.
  • Important thing to keep in mind that the manufacturer name should be kept unchanged while changing the MAC address i.e. XX:XX:XX (first 6 digits) should be same as before, otherwise you might face a lot of authentication issue.
  • This is only a temporary change and when you restart your device, your previous MAC address will be retrieved back."
I have an error "Operation not permitted"
What should I do now?

Hey,
I'm currently modelling a helical gear pair in Static Structural (Ansys 19.1) to find the contact stresses on the teeth under a certain load. I'm also interested in the shear stresses just under the surface of the teeth, therefore I added the Inflation option to my mesh. However this option greatly increases the element count in my model. I attached a picture to show my current mesh. Depicted there is a section cut through both gears, to show the mesh on the inside.
I could of course just reduce the layer count of the inflation, but I'm curious if there is a better option to get a finer mesh on the inside. So the question would be if there is a better alternative to inflation to more finely mesh my parts just under the surface? Or is there another method to reduce the element count?
Regards
Paul

Answer
Hello Paul, you can use the volume sizing (by splitting the volume in pre-processor) for this case than using inflation, or a better sizing strategy will work.
I have seen people generally use inflation mainly in FSI kind of simulations to get the better results.

Hello,

I have seen various methods of testing but unsure what to go for? The Labs are not really geared up for water analysis so, field testing with be used then some basic lab work.
What methods or suggestions do people have? Am I looking at the wrong things, something better to look for than N and P?

Answer
Hi Chris,
I recommend measuring total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) instead of dissolved forms, as being more integrative of the nutrient balance and retention than just dissolved forms. You can select methods from “APHA, AWWA, WPCF, 2005. Standard methods for the examination of water and waste water, twenty first ed. Washington DC.”. Basically, a digestion (acid or alkaline, depending on your target) must be performed to hydrolyze all N and P into dissolved forms, then the resulting hydrolyzed form (nitrate or ammonium for TN, orthophosphate for TP) is measured spectrophotometrically after reaction with the adequate reagents using the standardized procedures also collected in APHA (2005).

we are trying to estimate the jerk a tripper vehicle can feel when it get stucked in mine. So what the driver does is he engage the reverse gear and press accelerator pedal at full. So it has been observed that at that time the engine input toque increases at a high rate for a moment of time which is far greater than the engine toque and vehicle feels the jerk. so we want to estimate that increased torque. I need some analytical calculations to fine out the toque in the input shaft which rises to peak for a very small period of time.

Im currently investigating the frictional contact and bending stress in a helical gear pair in ANSYS Workbench, using a Static structural analysis.
Contact:
Frictional, Augmented Lagrange.
Mesh:
Tetrahedral, refined in areas of contact.
Support:
I have prescribed my gear with a cylindrical fixed support where the gear mounts on a shaft, and a cylindrical support on the pinion, which allows it to rotate around its own axis.
Load:
I have applied a moment on the pinion, on the same cylindrical face where the support is.
My problem is that my contact stresses seem extreme, which I think might be due to a low contact ratio, as it seems the surface stress only occurs at the end of the teeth where one tooth is "rolling" into engagement and the adjacent one is "rolling" out of engagement.
Do I need to change my modelling strategy? Or may the problem simply be due to inaccuracies in the tooth geometries?
Thank you in advance!
Relevant answer
The right way of defining boundary conditions for modelling gears is using cylindrical joints. You can insert different kind of joints in contact section. After inserting joint, you need to apply a torque on one of the gear's joint and on the other gear apply rotational displacement. Of course you need to apply the contact you mentioned in your question as well.
As always if the answer worked for you please recommend it.
