Question

The conceptual framework put forward by Holt et al. (2007) for their scale measuring Readiness for Organizational Change (cf. attached picture) seems promising but I'm not sure how it can be adapted qualitatively to come up with in-depth interview questions. Any help is more than appreciated.
Relevant answer
Answer
I am not sure that the key formulation on the left-hand side of the dagram is of much use. How could content or process not matter? When do individuals and context not play a crucial role? On top of that, this is a classic example of a model where "everything affects everything." In other words, this so-called theory would be hard to contradict.
Instead, a qualitative researcher would concentrate on which elements of content and process made the most difference, and how specific individuals and specific elements of context influenced the overall outcome.
If you are researching a specific organizational change, then I would recommend that your interview questions should be based around a participant's experiences with that change. For example, you might ask each of them to create a timeline, starting with when they first heard about the potential change, and then locating what they consider to be important points since that beginning.

Any idea about packages or application for hypothetical drawing and conceptual framework?
Relevant answer
Answer
All of the applications I mention are bought on-line. You type the name of the application you want. In addition you should type this into a search - "Making drawings for social and management science". I'm using google search and see many choices. After you do a search I recommend you speak with people at the university, tell them if you have any experience illustrating in your field. Then ask what they use. Lastly, Adobe application require a yearly subscription. Corel Draw and be subscription or purchase and is much less expensive than adobe. Image J is a US product and free. Its supported by an extensive group of researchers. But is developed for science analysis. If you can't get information and are a beginner with illustration my suggestions is start with the built-in tools in MS Word and/or Powerpoint. And begin to learn how to use one of the others. Many schools have courses in this. By the way, you can hire someone, even a student, to make the drawings you need. -- -- If none of this is helpful, then attach a sample of the kind of drawing you need.

I am struggling with writing up a theoretical framework for my #phd proposal. Do you have any tips, suggestions, or recommendations please?
Relevant answer
Answer
Ensure that you connect and develop a theoretical framework based on your review and knowledge of the chosen academic subject. Decide how you initially formulate your research problem. Review relevant literature to find gaps because it will let you present your work based on its analytical summary and impress teachers. Your description of interesting variables in the context of your literature review allows other people to understand important theorized links or connections.
Start with describing current knowledge. Investigate other scholars’ theories to identify the best one to explain your major point because your key goal is to convey to others why you think that your variables are relevant. It’s essential to include previous research and theories to defend your rationale. Tell readers what they will find in your study, apply theories to your research problem, and state your predictions or hypotheses.

Question

My research is a qualitative study and it is observed from Creswell's work that it need not necessarily have a framework to be drawn. The research, on the other hand, incorporated a theoretical lens to guide the study and substantiate observations.
Nonetheless, when consulted with experts it is argued that there is a lack of a framework to be included so that the observations can be aligned with the set framework
Relevant answer
Answer
There are quite a number of different approaches to qualitative research. In particular, when your study is more exploratory, then you do not need a theoretical framework. In contrast, when there has already been a fair amount of research in your area, then a theoretical framework can help explain how your project relates to that prior work.
Either way, the important thing is to begin with a clear "purpose statement" and/or research questions.

I am seeking suggestions / articles about Durkheim, and how he placed violence in his framework. More precisely: articles that question how he would have placed disruptive violence (c.q violence that cannot be placed as a functional within his vision of a cohesive and interdependent societies.) For example: how would he have explained or placed genocide in his school of thoughts?
Relevant answer
Answer
Anthonie Holslag This is a very interesting question and led me to read about Durkheim on Wikipedia. I have not studied sociology so my views are that of a layman on this subject.
He lived more than 100 years ago and tried to makes sense of the workings of society. We live in a very different world now where the internet and television and media in general have had a profound effect. This in terms of the financial management of the economy and in terms of the influence on the individual.
I do take your point about genocide: It would seem that the idea of social norms and standards and a social conscience should prevent genocide.
Why it has failed to do that on several occasions during the last 100 years is then a good question. I think a major factor is the failure of international society to deal with dictatorship.
Durkheim was on favour of standards of social conscience and if this were applied today we would see a much greater role the United Nations in preventing dictators. The USA amended its constitution in the 1950s to limit the term of a leader to a total of 10 years. The UN should be setting guidelines for a.written constitution for every country to follow to avoid extended terms of office which inevitably lead to conflict.
In the time of Durkheim, the primary means of social cohesion was religion. This is not helpful internationally as religious differences are more likely to lead to conflict and even genocide.

Right now, in 2022, we can read with perfect understanding mathematical articles and books
written a century ago. It is indeed remarkable how the way we do mathematics has stabilised.
The difference between the mathematics of 1922 and 2022 is small compared to that between the mathematics of 1922 and 1822.
Looking beyond classical ZFC-based mathematics, a tremendous amount of effort has been put
into formalising all areas of mathematics within the framework of program-language implementations (for instance Coq, Agda) of the univalent extension of dependent type theory (homotopy type theory).
But Coq and Agda are complex programs which depend on other programs (OCaml and Haskell) and frameworks (for instance operating systems and C libraries) to function. In the future if we have new CPU architectures then
Coq and Agda would have to be compiled again. OCaml and Haskell would have to be compiled again.
For instance suppose a formal mathematics Agda file started with
{-# OPTIONS --without-K --exact-split #-}
Both software and operating systems are rapidly changing and have always been so. What is here today is deprecated tomorrow.
My question is: what guarantee do we have that the huge libraries of the current formal mathematics projects in Agda, Coq or other languages will still be relevant or even "runnable" (for instance type-checkable) without having to resort to emulators and computer archaeology 10, 20, 50 or 100 years from now ?
10 years from now will Agda be backwards compatible enough to still recognise
current Agda files ?
Have there been any organised efforts to guarantee permanent backward compatibility for all future versions of Agda and Coq ? Or OCaml and Haskell ?
Perhaps the formal mathematics project should be carried out within a meta-programing language, a simpler more abstract framework (with a uniform syntax) comprehensible at once to logicians, mathematicians and programers and which can be converted automatically into the latest version of Agda or Coq ?

Clarence Lewis Protin `Writing "literate" .agda files in which code is mixed with an informal mathematical presentation of the formalisation seems the best option !`
There are software development practices akin to this. In the open-source projects that I have participated in (other than my own), comments are eschewed. There are variations on Literate Programming that some adopt, although it requires more mechanical support. In software, commentary helps differentiate what the software is for in contrast to what it is, establishing how the software is an interpretation of some conceptual model.
The risk used to justify the elimination of commentary is the problem of maintaining consistency between the commentary and the code as it is developed/maintained.
I have no objection to this approach, nevertheless. I find the commentary important for my own recollection of the purpose of some code and confirmation that the code accomplishes that.
I do not see how this methodology is a solution to the problem raised in this question though, unless it would be useful in maintaining the proof in the face of breaking changes up-level or down-level. Please say more about that.

For my master thesis I am currently designing a single case study. Due to the limited size of the case organisation the case study will be of qualitative nature.
The purpose of the single case study research is to test/verify whether an existing, generic theory is applicable to the case study context based on qualitative research and based on the findings, conclude suitability for the case context and possibly come up with alterations to the existing framework.
I am stuck on two parts:
First, what would be an adequate case study method for the purpose of this research? I've read about Grounded Theory which assumes the researcher starts without a theoretical concept or framework and also about theory-testing using qualitative case studies. But neither seems to be directly applicable to my research needs.
Second, I have not been able to find a process, grounded in literature to approach framework testing/verification using qualitative methods. I find it odd that I can find no books or other literature that breaks down the process of steps (for example, by designing an interview/interview questions based on variables in an existing framework).

Frankly speaking qualitative research is always preferred as it is detailed and explains phenomena behind events. At least I rank qualitative research above quantitative. Case study is an exhaustive probe into one or very few number of similar entities to deeply understand process you aim to explain. During this process you may administer questionnaire internally to workers and managers . For example you change a practice in he organization and then study its effect. The case research is explanatory not conclusive as sample size is not random and diverse. No postulates can be formed,

Question

Generally, the theoretical framework served as the foundation of research for it provides theories and arguments crucial in the development and direction of the paper. It also helps researchers to explain variables that have connections and importance. Theories are used to support arguments, phenomena, and claims. Thus, theories are imperative in knowledge generation, strategies, and predictions. However, not all studies and other researchers are using it. There are instances that theories are not used herein. For instance, science-based and scientific experiments, although they have in mind the predictions or possible outcomes, they made use of models, cyclic or cycle-based evidence frameworks, schemes, and tables for presentation and analysis instead. Another is an experiment (e.g., developing medicine for virus cure) in a conceptual framework that is displayed to scientifically and specifically introduce its underlying concepts, variables, sub-variables, and contributing factors which have importance in a study.
Relevant answer
Answer
This is largely due to differences in the history of different disciplines, as well as differences in the types of knowledge that is valued and how these values appear in writing. In more STEM-oriented fields, it is not common to explicitly state the theories underlying the research, but they definitely exist, regardless of whether the author acknowledges them. For example, the "scientific method" itself is a Western theoretical framework that has origins in the history of empiricism, positivism, and objectivity (all of which are also Western theoretical frameworks underlying much research in the "hard" sciences). These frameworks are not explicitly mentioned in research papers mostly due to tradition - they are simply assumed for certain fields. Many researchers in the sciences would not necessarily even think of these things as theoretical frameworks because the way that researchers are trained in those disciplines (usually) does not include debate about different theories or foundational assumptions. If you are interested in learning more about this, I'd suggest looking into the history and philosophy of science. A good starting point would be the work of Thomas Kuhn, e.g. his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Regardless, it's important to note that the theoretical frameworks currently active and popular in the sciences are mostly all Western inventions, and there is a decent amount of Western chauvinism involved in the assumption of these frameworks around the world.

Hello everyone!
I have a question regarding the conceptual/theoretical framework for qualitative research.
I know that you have to use the existing literature or theory to make a framework, but I was wondering if you can use only 3 concepts out of four concepts from one research.
For example, a key concept is why organizations form partnerships. Regarding this, one research discussed about four motives of why organizations form partnerships. In this case, can I use only three motives for my framework?
Also, another study suggested two other motivations. can I combine them with the one above?
Thank you in advance, and I will wait for your insights!
Relevant answer
Answer
In qualitative research, the extent to which you use a theoretical framework depends on how exploratory your study is. Often, you want to minimize your preconceptions, so you try to avoid using prior theory to structure your own data collection and analysis. In other cases, you may want to rely on broad concepts (e.g., partnership in this case), but not base your approach on the specifics that were used in previous studies.
The bottom line is that you have to clarify the purposes of your study, and then use that as a basis for selecting the degree to which you want to engage with the literature before you enter the field.

I would like to design the structure of covalent organic framework for computational calculations. I found that in some COFs, pore is surrounded by 3 or 4 repeating units of building blocks. How we will come to know about this ? Is there any tool to identify this?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Silpa,
The best way is to take one repeat unit (ore more, depending of what you want to calculate) from the X-Ray stucture. If you do not have the X-Ray structure, you have to build by yourself the repeated unit, having the building blocks in hand. This is more or less easy. Some COFs have only one posibility of growth and is not complicate to build it by any molecular builder. Once you have the repeating unit builded as guess, you can run optimization calculations and whatever calculations you want.
It is also imortant what type of COF do you have, 2D or 3D. If it is a 2D one, you have to build a layer formed by repetitive units, large enought to can stack them. Size is your layers as well as the number of stacks is depending of the COF and what do you want to calculate. It is true that the bigger is your builded COF the more apropiate to reality will be the calculations, but we have to take in account the computational cost also. I strongly sugest to you to use dispersion correction within your calculations, because numerous noncovalent interaction between the layers of COF.
If it is a 3D COF, the things are much easier, because the network grow in all direction by covalent bonds. In this case you have to build the COF in all direction until you will find the smallest repetitive unit. If you are not interested to run calculation only for the smallest repeating unit, you can add two ore more units like this to build some pore that is defined by these repeating units. It is true that some COFs define a pore inside the smallest repetitive unit, or a pore is defined by more repetitive units.
Personally, i do not know a program which can identify by itself the pores, or any method to build automatically a COF. Manualy this can be perfomed. If we do not have a X-Ray structure, is under our chemical intuition how to build a part of a COF.
I recomand to you Spartan molecular builder for design the COFs. From my point of view, it is the easiest molecular builder. After, you can save the atomic coordinates and finally prepare the input file for calculations in the framework of what package you use.
Hope you will obtain the best results from your calculations.
If you have any more quiestions do not hesitate to ask.

This work has presented an intelligent home automation system based on IoT technologies, cloud computing, and a machine learning algorithm. The home automation system allows remote and local control of the home via an Android-based mobile application. The system controls electrical home appliances, monitors environmental conditions through temperature, humidity, and light sensors, and ensures home security through a motion sensor and an IoT camera. The system makes intelligent decisions to automatically turn ON or OFF lights and allow the user to view a picture of the person captured by the camera and decide whether to save it. The system is scalable, and the application allows additional appliances with an extra configured point, simply named outlet in our work. Also, the mobile application uses a real-time cloud database to record data gathered. It also displays the trend of the readings graphically on the screen of the mobile application. These data can be analyzed and used for future prediction. The next phase of the work will be to use a dataset of several real-life images captured by the camera from the system or sourced from relevant datasets in the field of home automation and train a machine learning algorithm to classify them so that the system could differentiate between an intruder and the home occupants. Also, we plan to enhance the system such that the user will only receive captured images of an intruder, and other captured images will be saved in real-time into the cloud-based database of the system. This will remove the limitation on the encumbrance of a load of images on the mobile application. In addition, machine learning will also be used to enhance the PIR sensor’s performance to differentiate between an animal, the occupant, and an intruder. This will reduce the notification from the PIR sensor to the user. The machine learning algorithm will also be applied to classify detected images to work with several occupants and a larger data set of intruders.

I am working on a thesis that explores experimental ways to identifiy the relationships in a work enviroment and i need some background theory to base my research on.
Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Depending on your question about work relationships, you could begin by doing qualitative studies using grounded theory. You may find certain questions about work relationships, like productivity, have more studies done.
I did a doctoral thesis on An investigation of the knowledge base used by critical care nurses. I interviewed, observed and checked chart notes on 30 CC nurses in three hospitals. One of the findings was that nurses gravitated toward different types of interactions with patients, favoring two of them; physical, physiological, psychological and technical. There was agreement and disagreement about the value of these different aspects of care. One nurse, for example, who gave great physical care, on more than one occasion would do over the physical care of another nurse who she thought didn't do a good job. Depending on the work environment you are interested in, you may find some division in value of different aspects of a job.
In another qualitative study, I was asked to determine what makes good employees stay at their job in a hospital. This was a teaching hospital that was a beta site for testing of new equipment and procedures. That research kept employees working there if their department was involved. The departments that had no research or innovation going on, were losing staff. Women were happiest if the people in the work environment were collaborative and worked well together. Men did not mention that at all.
Hope that's helpful. Good luck with your thesis.

I'm conducting a comparative study - by way of most similar systems design - between two countries on their decentralization implementation on a service delivery and attempting herein to understand why some states succeed while others fail in that. Though the literature review I've found three explanations that largely appear to explain for why some succeed or fail; elite capture, lack of a supportive and clear regulatory and legal framework; and central government intervention.
I have those explanations, but i am somewhat unclear on how to proceed with the theory - since I don't have any like e.g., realism. How would I go about writing a theoretical framework if I have some potential explanations but no clear theory to hang onto?

A general methodological approach can be proposed. Here is the study map
The assumption must be logically consistent.
The assumption should not contradict the fundamental provisions of the science in which the hypothesis is put forward (the provision of this requirement is not absolute, since in some cases it is useful to question these provisions themselves; if the fundamental provisions of science, which the proposed assumption contradicts, cannot be refuted, an assumption is made).
The assumption must be fundamentally verifiable. If an assumption cannot be verified in principle (substantiated or refuted), it is not recognized as a hypothesis.
The assumption should not contradict previously established facts, for the explanation of which it is not intended (not related to the subject area of the proposed hypothesis).
The assumption must be applicable to the widest possible range of phenomena. This requirement allows one to choose the simplest from several hypotheses explaining the same range of phenomena - therefore it is often called the principle of simplicity.
The assumption must be effective in cognitive or practical terms (in particular, allowing the development or concretization of a program for further research).

Firstly, thank you to whoever reads this! I am an overly stressed doctoral student (but aren't we all) at the 11th hour of my dissertation journey (I defend in 2 days). For context my dissertation's topic is social work and the labor movement. ( I am a social work Doc student). Long story short, as I was analyzing my findings I found that there was an overwhelming connection to social exchange theory that I believe helps me to better discuss and contextualize one of my findings, so I added a paragraph about it. When I talked to my committee about it a couple of months ago they were all for it, but they said do not to change the OG framework, and to just include it in the discussion and clearly explain the connection. However, at the last review of my paper before my defense about 2 weeks ago, one of the committee members said it was not ok to add the theory in the discussion and maybe I should change the OG framework instead, or that maybe I need to instead include the theory under implications for further research. ( I should have posed this question earlier of course, but it just occurred to me that this might be a place to ask) Unfortunately, they haven't decided on what they think is best and want to decide after the defense (which drives me crazy, because of course we all want to leave that room with a PASS!). It is only one member of the committee that feels this way (she says she does not remember the original conversation). My chair and other member were still on board for the initial agreement. I am not exactly sure of the dynamics but I believe the dissenting member holds a higher tenure/status which is why my chair has instructed me to be prepared for edits. I also can't find anything in our department's manual regarding this issue. I am wondering if any of you can give me some information on this? Bonus points if you are able to link me to something I can share with the committee on what the best practice would be. A Million thanks for reading this far, and 10 million more if you can help me out!

How can we link our newly developed research 'conceptual framework' to an already established 'theoretical framework'? Is there any guideline or manual for that? What's your thinking about this matter? Is that necessary to crossmatch your research idea to an established theory to explain the study's more significant impact or outcome?
Relevant answer
Answer
Your research should be underpinned by the existing theoretical framework/s. However, when you apply the framework via your instrument and collect neccesary data and thereafter various statistical testing, the results will determine the most applicable and/or significant constructs of the framework in 'your study'. This will then allow you to plot your conceptual framework based the results of your study.

Hello everyone,
I need some guidance on choosing a good method for my master's thesis (we are really struggling, thank you in advance!!). Shortly described, we want to analyze the impact/effectiveness of a particular strategic framework on the sustainability performance of businesses that have used it. Basically, we will ask some questions to the companies that used it, ask when they implemented it, how long they used it, who was assigned for the implementation (middle or upper management), if they hired a consultant or not, etc.
Then, we will go into their sustainability reports and see how certain indicators changed after the implementation and over time (CO2 emissions, water usage, energy usage, etc.).
We will combine the data from both approaches to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of the framework to make businesses more sustainable.
I think that because we will use quali + quanti data, the research type is mixed (right?).
With that said, we are having a hard time defining what "research approach and research method" we are going to use. Especially for the qualitative part. I come from an engineering background and there I did not have to establish my "epistemological and theoretical assumptions" (This would be the research approach. The research method would be something like "thematic analysis". If I understood correctly.)
So here I am asking for help. Any guidance would be highly appreciated.
thank you!
PD: Should we also incorporate into the study a control group? (a set of companies that did not use the particular strategic framework)
Relevant answer
Answer
It sounds to me like both your components are quantitative because they rely on descriptive measurements of pre-defined variables. In contrast, qualitative data would usually consist of more open ended interviews that would focus on issues like meaning and would use a more interpretative approach. Instead, I would think of this as a "multi-method" design with two quantitative sections.
One key issue that you are going to face is sample size. If you plan to do statistical analyses, you will need a large N (well over 100). Otherwise, you could select several particularly interesting firms for a series of case studies.

Hi, currently doing a mediation analysis for the following research framework (A -> mediated by C-> E)
With such a framework, there's an indirect effect of mediation and no direct effect.
Can the mediation analysis still be done and are there any references to support this?
Relevant answer
Answer
Aldo Herman Yes, it is possible. Your model implies that the direct paths A --> D, A --> E, B --> D, and B --> E are zero in the population. The effects of A and B on D and E are fully mediated through C. This hypothesis can be tested through path analysis. The corresponding path model is overidentified (has > 0 degrees of freedom) because not all possible direct paths are estimated--some are constrained/fixed to zero. The model can therefore be tested against the observed data using statistical tests of model fit (e.g., a chi-square goodness of fit test) in programs for structural equation modeling such as Mplus, AMOS, or lavaan (in R).
If the path model with the above direct paths fixed to zero fits the data well, the hypothesis of full mediation does not have to be rejected. If one of the paths in question is different from zero in the population, the model with these paths constrained to zero may show misfit, leading to rejection of the full-mediation hypothesis (provided you have enough statistical power/a large enough sample to detect this effect).
If you type "full mediation" into Google Scholar, you should find plenty of references.

I understand your meaning, but without a theoretical framework how we can verify our works?
Investigation reports should include a reasonable theoretical framework to explain the significance and effectiveness of the study.
A theoretical framework is used to limit the scope of the relevant data by focusing on specific variables and defining the specific viewpoint [framework] that the researcher will take in analyzing and interpreting the data to be gathered.

A conceptual framework is the researcher’s idea on how the research problem will have to be explored. This is founded on the theoretical framework, which lies on a much broader scale of resolution. The theoretical framework dwells on time tested theories that embody the findings of numerous investigations on how phenomena occur.
The theoretical framework provides a general representation of relationships between things in a given phenomenon. The conceptual framework, on the other hand, embodies the specific direction by which the research will have to be undertaken. Statistically speaking, the conceptual framework describes the relationship between specific variables identified in the study. It also outlines the input, process and output of the whole investigation. The conceptual framework is also called the research paradigm.

My question subdivides into two sub-questions:
(1)How do you validate a computational/theoretical framework?
Suppose you are proposing a framework as a shortcut for easily addressing a certain category of research problems within the same field. How do you recognize that it's working correctly? How do you validate it?
(2)How do you validate an experimental framework?
You are proposing a new design for experiments within a specific field. How do you validate this framework?
Relevant answer

As per my opinion, frameworks are validated in two aspects.
1. Internal
2. External
Internal validity evidences are most related to content and construct validation procedures using expert opinion and pilot testing
Whereas external validity is measured through repetition of the experiment on the same sample.
