Hi ,
I’m using a GLMM for my sleep study because it handles missing data and different observation lengths well. My data is unbalanced since this was a field study, not a controlled lab setting. Shift situations varied within and between subjects, and we had a longer pre-phase (~3 weeks) compared to post (~1 week).
We measured 9 shift situations across two groups (control/intervention) in a pre-post design:
  • Pre-Control: 437, Pre-Intervention: 425
  • Post-Control: 191, Post-Intervention: 210
All situations per time/group stratification were recorded at least 15 times, except for one case with only 5 records.
A chi-squared test showed a significant imbalance (X²(24) = 70.02, p < .001). I calculated the Cluster Size Coefficient of Variation (C.V.) = 0.42, based on this referencehttps://api.istex.fr/ark:/67375/WNG-DQ4BGH16-P/fulltext.pdf?auth=ip,fede&sid=google,istex-view .
Does the GLMM (lmer(sleep_variable ~ time * group + shift_situation + (1 | subject)) already account for this imbalance, or do I need to use weighted sleep data to improve data quality?

Broadly speaking GLMMs are fine with imbalance and short of getting more data there's not much better as an option in most cases.
They are however not magic. The big concern is simply lack of information where you have small cell sizes in something like a factorial design or just sparse information because of the imbalance. This leads to imprecise estimates (as it should - less information implies noisier estimates). In other words just because it copes well with imbalance doesn't mean you don't have low statistical power in relation to some research Qs. As a rule of thumb power to detect a difference in means is maximised when there is balance and limited more by the smaller n for imbalanced samples.
A full Bayesian model with informative priors might help with this but in my view that depends on being able to justify the priors.
GLMMs also have shrinkage - which is one one reason why they work well with imbalance. All estimates are shrunk towards the estimates for typical observations - this dampens down some of the noise in estimating with imbalance. In a sense they trade off precision for bias - the estimates are arguably more biased within sample but more precise than in models without shrinkage. They should also generalise better out of sample.

The war/genocide/ecocide on Gaza that started on October 7th, 2023 by the Israeli occupation army supported by most advanced weapons of mass destructions, and including carpet bombing and the use of white phosphorus among others, and the burning and destruction of natural flora and vegetations in Gaza including the olive trees, and the destruction of water systems, all and the pollution of air, water and soil, with no doubt have detrimental environmental impacts. It is also extremely difficult to run any field study under continuous bombardment, shelling and direct targeting of Palestinian citizens, journalist, and even UN and humanitarian aid officials. However, we know that researchers managed to do that amidst previous wars. I was wondering if anyone is aware of any existing studies of that nature, especially in relevance to the ecosystems, the biodiversity and the fauna and flora of Gaza. Setting fire on fields, olive trees, agricultural areas, and Palestinian villages by Israeli settlers have been intensified since October the 7th 2023 as well. West Bank could be relatively less challenging for field studies. If anyone is aware of any field study, would appreciate sharing them/links/ references. Thank You.

I would like to test a technology using the Technology Acceptance Model using the extended model by De Cicco et al., 2022. However, additionally to the proposed variables I would also like to test for "Output Quality", which is used in numerous other researches using TAM (e.g. Venkatesh, 2000).
Now, it's not really clear to me what the procedure is for extending the TAM to use it for actually evaluating a technology. Does an extended model with a new set of variables need to be validated first? And what would this process look like? Or is it sufficient that each variable has been tested before, allowing them to be combined in an extended TAM?

During my field study, I collected Groundwater samples and filtered them sequentially using 0.2um, 50kDa, and 3kDa. But when I analyzed these samples in the Shimadzu TOC analyzer, I got DOC concentration is high in 50 and 3 kDa in comparison to 0.2um.
E.g., in from sample
0.2um = 7ppm
50kDa = 16ppm
3kDa = 44ppm
How is it possible? Can anyone please explain?

It‘s a theory. You can check by filtering a sample of pure water. I think your filter is made for protein seperation, so likely it isn’t designed for low TOC samples.

In my opinion, in the past, economic colonialism usually consisted of an unfair distribution of revenues, profits, the implementation of economic ventures using new technologies and other positive effects of economic development, international trade, etc. Unfortunately, it happens that this type of economic colonialism continues, i.e. also today . Of course, in addition to typically economic colonialism, in the past there were also other forms of colonialism, which consisted in using colonies as a cheap source of raw materials, factors of production and even people treated as slaves, and then as markets for specific products produced using technologies previously unknown in the colony area. This kind of colonialism did much harm and harm to the indigenous community of the colony area. Colonialism in the past more than once initiated globalization processes, in which the negative aspects of these processes were particularly visible. Colonialism often caused excessive exploitation of raw materials, contributed to the degradation of the local culture in the colony area, i.e. the destruction of part of the cultural heritage of mankind. Colonialism was also often the source of all sorts of crises and social conflicts. Of course, a lot has changed in the last few decades. Currently there is no formal colonialism. However, informally, it occurs through political and economic dependencies between countries whose economies are strongly differentiated in terms of economic development, equipment with production factors, and individual categories of capital, including technology and money. Economic ties are developed through international economic cooperation, trade, investments in communication infrastructure, public institutions and new enterprises, including investments carried out by internationally operating corporations, industrial enterprises, financial institutions, etc. Such economic ties contribute to the present globalization processes. The currently conducted international economic cooperation should be implemented on the basis of partnerships, mutual benefits, respect for the diversity of other cultures, transfer of modern technologies, care for the well-being of citizens in all cooperating countries, care for the condition of the natural environment, development of nature protection systems, implementation of sustainable development goals e.t.c.

I would like to write a methodological paper. Notably, I would like to explain how a particular methodology can be used to study problems related to a specific field of studies (i.e. governance). Could any of you advise on how a methodological paper should be structured, what are the key elements that must be addressed? Should there be a section on the philosophical underpinning? I would appreciate any good advise on this.

In my humble opinion a "methodological proposal" section should be the core of a methodological paper. A "case study" section should then apply the proposed methodology on a practical case to show that the methodology is useful. If a case study is not possible, an Analysis section could be used instead.
With that said, my basic structure of a methodological paper would be:
I - Introduction
II - Literature review:
It should conclude on the lack or limit of the current methodologies and justify why a new methodology is needed
III - Methodological Proposal (you can call it what name you gave to you knew methodology
It’s your new idea, the core contribution of the paper. Explain the essence of the new methodology, the steps, the expected results, the limitations...
A very simple running example can be used to better convey your points
IV - Case Study:
It applies your new methodology step by step by step and shows the results that you explain
V - Discussions:
Focuses on the evidence of what your new methodology brings compared to others and presents potential limitations if any
VI - Conclusion
You could add a Background section after the introduction if deemed necessary to help the reader better understand any background information. You could also add a “related work” section if necessary. And of course, you should be able to organize your structure in the best way that conveys your work.

The OTR tires market (Off-the-Road) is projected to grow owing to key reasons such as increasing demand for agriculture tractors and construction & mining equipment due to mechanization and increased infrastructural development in developing countries. Increased automation in the industrial processes is also estimated to influence the OTR tires for industrial vehicles. Also, with the increase in average machine hours, the demand for tire replacements has increased, which, in turn, is projected to boost the demand for retreaded tires.
I think a continuation of coal business, as long as global regulation remains moderate and businesslike. The heavy metals and large-scale mining can be heavily dependent on the global economy. It looks like there has been some uptick in heavy metals and heavy mining activity. Oil is always a big consideration, particularly with the oil sands in Canada and some other countries, where a large mining area.

I always advise people to begin within a theoretical framework to generate a great research question. Ethnobotany theory and social ecological theory are good places to start. Gaoue et al. (2017) and Albuquerque and Hurrell (2010) offer a good overview of ethnobotany theory. For social ecological theory maybe check out Albuquerque et al. (2019). These papers are also good sources of approaches in ethnobotany and can help in formulating useful research questions.

unless collecting rocks and minerals was one of the launch pads to study mineralogy creating a reference collection of both rock and mineral specimens is recommended. Do no start with the most exotic minerals and rocks but try find common rock types and minerals but different in their outward appearance.
In combination with this practical approach which helps you improve your visual inspection and the use of the classical tools from hardness to crystal morphology read textbooks where simplex chemical systems relevant for litho genesis and mineral formation are discussed.
Get acquainted with the chemical systems and the periodical chart of elements.
The best way to enter classical crystallography is in combination with optical mineralogy. It helps you train your imagination which is the key to successfully master the petrography microscope.
During this incipient stage you will realized where your interests are located in genetic mineralogy, petrology, crystallography or economic geology, applied geochemistry with material sciences which can be an outlet into one of the neighboring disciplines. Be very open-minded and try and get information of adjacent disciplines as much as possible to find your way. If you feel that space and time are more attractive than compositional changes and varying physical-chemical conditions you need not give up mineralogy as you decide to pass over into geology. I did it the other way round without cutting my geological roots.
There is more than one way to head for Rome.

Background: There is a US-based pathology portal, which I have been using since I saw histo in my very first semester in med school. I bought books there, participated in quizzes and heavily used knowledge based content portal. Consequently, I feel very sentimentally and strongly about this resource and the project below.
What is now: During CAP19 in Orlando, I asked if I could write some small part of the content for them. Surprisingly, they said yes, however, I need to come up with the supervisor in any field, so I can start. The main author is required to be at attending level in the United States, but does not have to be licensed or practicing in the USA.
What's next: I am looking for preceptor with minimal time investment on their part and can provide more details. I think, it's hard for me to wait until I become an attending myself, because this portal groomed me as a person, who I am today. As much as I have long ways to go, this was the source, that solidified my interest in pathology and once they said: "yes ... [I} can be writing now, not later... but under supervision", I have been having hard times to wait for one of my own preceptors to free up on time or for me to reach the level of attending.

A key point is going to be what you mean by "near" mountains. The closer you are to high-elevation, surface, drainage divides, the less likely you are to have water with high total dissolved solids (TDS). This is especially true when speaking of groundwater that is emerging in springs and into streams' baseflow. But that isn't an issue of near, that is in the mountains.
In the arid western U.S. there is inter-basin flow. In deep ground water one can encounter very high TDS at the edges of mountain ranges, and under mountain ranges.
Another source of high TDS to keep in mind is hydrothermal phenomena. In areas where there is high heat-flow, or where faults allow for deep circulation of groundwater that then returns to the surface, the TDS of ground water can become very high.
There are also issues with sulfide minerals and the pH of groundwater.
The foregoing, along with what previous posters have mentioned, mean that the answer to the question you posed is "no". Groundwater near mountains is not always fresh, not even groundwater that comes to the surface.
The second part of your question might be rephrased as "why does groundwater near mountains tend to be fresh?" I think that the primary answer to that question relates to the residency times of groundwater. Mountains tend to be areas of higher precipitation due to orographic effects. Thus, they tend to be areas of higher groundwater recharge. Therefore, most groundwater coming to the surface has had a relatively short residency time in the ground and this equates to little time to dissolve solids. Just remember that these are all generalizations. There will always be exceptions.

Multidisciplinary knowledge is not required if the issue being solved is solvable by specialist knowledge. Some problems require multidisciplinary approaches, some do not. For example, there is no need for chemists to interfere with mathematicians solving mathematical problems, but while discussing complex issues such as climate change, knowledge from many different disciplines has to be included (biology, geology, economy, chemists, physics etc.). Field specialists are needed though to advance their specific field. Without field specialists, generally no advancement, and without advancement in one specialist field, how can there be advancement in a multidisciplinary field that include several specialist fields?
The saying goes 'Jack of all trades, Master of none, Though ofttimes better, Than master of one'. Meaning that being versed in several disciplines can sometimes be helpful.

I am analyzing data from a field study. The main goal of this experiment is to understand what intervention can help increase students verbal reasoning.
There are 4 kinds of interventions (say Factor A,B,C,D)in total, the combination of which result in 6 experiment groups.
group1: no treatment; group2: A; group3: A +B; group4 A+B+C, group5: A+B+D, group6: A+B+C+D.
We randomly chose some schools and assigned them into 6 different groups. Students' verbal reasoning skills were tested before and after the intervention for each school.
I suggested simply compare group1 v.s. group2 to determine effect of A, group2 v.s group3 to determine effect of B; and use a 2*2 ANOVA on group 3~6 to determine main and interaction effect of C and D.
My co-author suggested that we should check out analysis for nested model. I am confused as whether or not this is a nested design and how should i change my analysis if so?

Yes I would do an analysis on student-level and school level simulataouslu using a multilevel regression model that specifies fixed effects of treatment and a random effect of schools and students. This automatically gets better estimates of the standard errors (especially of the school intervention variables.

Any major change will be inspirational -- and some of this will be useful and in appropriate ways more generally useful. (This may seem self-serving (on my part), but I really believe "you do what you can, where you can" is part of an individual being her/his best and THAT MATTERS more generally. Preamble:
You intend to conduct a qualitative field study (data collection) among a homogenous group (say expectant mothers). You have observed that these women are not adhering to 2 different health interventions - A & B and you want to know their reasons/challenges behind this fallout trend.
You discover 3 groups of defaulters:
1. those not taking intervention #A only
2. those not taking intervention #B only
3. and the intersection as well (those not taking #both A&B)
Now, you have chosen to constitute focus groups to discuss the issue. WHat is the #best way to constitute the group?
Is it better to constitute the groups respectively using only category A and then B so that the responses can be combined ?
Or
It would be best to constitute one focus group, consisting members of the intersection category ?
Assume that this qualitative aspect is a follow-up to quantitative study on same subjects.

FGs are deliberative exercises so the key issue is what do you want them talking to each other about? If the overarching research question is decision making about maternal health care in general, then you can mix things up because A, B, A+B are just conversation starters, they are not the focus of the research question.
However, if your research question is focused on evaluating these specific interventions then I'd suggest you do at least 3, one for each adoption scenario. If you mix you may end up with people arguing for the superiority of their respective decisions rather than getting into detailed discussion about how they came to their decisions.
Another issue to consider is that people are likely to be inclined to discuss their actual experience with the programs rather than their decisions to participate. A challenge will be to separate out how much of what they say is based on current experience or on what they remember actually thinking or knowing at the time of making the decision. All the more reason to keep the groups uniform with regard to the three scenarios.

You can try the software "Origin " for your graphs. Its quite manageable for most of basic graph plots.
Also for raw data analysis, I guess repeatability (can the same or similar data be obtained when verification experiment is to be carried out?), reliability (does it comply with available standards procedures?) and credibility of the of raw- data is key. For the results discussion, I think its always great explaining and discussing with the potential readers in mind. Simplicity and accurateness is also very important.

As an art enthusiast, I find it somewhat discouraging that scholarly articles in such fields as philosophy, literature, film and history of art, despite the prestige and the significance usually associated with them, are scarcely received by the general public. An additional problem is one of language. In order to engage a more general public, you have to be understood. And much of accademia tends to tie itself up in knots by using very field specif words, expressions or phrase. You have raised some important and interesting issues! Yes, there are many challenges as well as possibilities associated with the use of ethnographic research methods to study humanitarianism. One of the challenging issues would be the state or global political power, which is often beyond an ethnographer's ability to observe, record and to analyze. Think about recent Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar and in Bangladesh. An ethnographer can observe, record and analyze all the visible violence and suffering of the minority groups of people. However, it can be very difficult for an ordinary ethnographer to get access to many other domains of research where actual power is being exercised, policies are made and implemented to annihilate humanity! Personal safety and security, political threat or many other local, regional or global issues can affect an ethnographer to conduct a comprehensive research on such an issue. Interdisciplinary and collaborative research approaches as well as supports from government and NGOs / research agencies may require facilitating multi-sited ethnographic research on such issues!

I have been studying on Anatolian ground squirrel for about 20 years. For a while, I have also been interested in the ENM aprroach. Across its geographic distribution, I have been collecting tissue samples every about 20-40 km, and, in the meantime, occurrence records. So, I need a standard method to quantify number of populations (of occupied patches) to associate that measure with suitability obtained by ENM approach. It is difficult for me to quantify population density in a patch because I do field studies across the range. But, I have an observation that frequency of observation (encountering with an individual) tends to be high in areas of high suitability while travelling and collecting tissue samples across a region. That is, the methodology should be compatible with that I am travelling and collecting tissue samples and occurrence records across 100-200 km every day. Note that frequency of observation is also associated with time of day and season!

Hakan, do you plan to examine population genetics from the collected tissue samples? If so, there are a number of approaches that could potentially address some of your questions. First, you could quantify population structure and simply overlay that with your ENM map to get a visual of how distance and/or unsuitable areas may be contributing to differentiation among populations. There is no requirement to begin a quantitative study with a preliminary qualitative study. The common name for this approach is an "exploratory sequential" design, which points to the question of whether you need to do exploratory research in order to create your research instruments. So, the issue is whether you can satisfy your reviewers that existing measures are sufficient, and if not, then you face the issue of whether you can effectively create the measures yourself without any qualitative input.
As for sequential explanatory designs, the key issue there is using the qualitative data to understand the quantitative results. You can accomplish this with data that were collected concurrently, if you are careful to create one-ended items that can help you interpret the relationships between quantitative items. So, it is not such when the data are collected as it is how they are used.

Pre-service teachers usually had to know something about the History of Education - both in their countries and globally - as a part of their induction into teaching up to about the 1980s.
From around this time a competences and standards regime became increasingly prominent and units/courses/even one-off lectures related to the History of Education disappeared within initial teacher education - certainly in the jurisdictions that I have worked in (England and Australia).
I will be interested to hear if History of Education continues in some countries globally.
Reactions to the death of 'History of Education' are likely to vary on a continuum between: 'good riddance - this was fairly useless knowledge which didn't help people to become better teachers' and 'a shame that teachers understand so little about the evolution of education over the past two hundred years'.
Personal stance: I have come to co-exist reasonably productively as a teacher educator with Standards regimes in both England and Australia - they can provide useful focus upon essential features and competences required of teachers......but I also feel that Standards can be instrumental and can underplay knowledge and (especially) values that underpin practice.
I have also undertaken some History of Education research on citizenship education and early Twentieth century inspection regimes, so should declare an interest that I see the 'History of Education' of having some value and importance as a field of study (but I remember being bored rigid in lectures on the topic during my own experience of initial teacher education) !

I hope I understand your problem as you raise it. However, I suggest a different approach. First, I try to provide an analogy.
Analogy: In physical geography vs. geology similar "authority"/"our domain" approach was typical for the second half of the 20th century. I would formulate what happened this way (please note this is strong simplification): (physical) geographers are responsible to study the landscape and what is on the top of the surface (say down to 1 m depth), what is below, belongs to geology. (Again, it is a simplification.)
What happened in the 1990s? A convergence took place, because many (real, interested) researchers realized the constraints of this division. Pedology, landslide research, erosion studies and a number of other fields needed urgently integrated data, because they could not solve their problems without this integrative approach. Many researchers coming from various fields (remote sensing specialists, engineering geologists, pedologist) invaded the field of geomorphology, coming up with valuable studies, quantifications, new models for surface processes. And now, if you look at the scientific programme of Geomorphology Division of the European Geosciences Union, you will find that a colourful variety characterizes this field, and many researchers of various disciplines present their relevant studies in this framework.
Returning back to your problem: Taking the aforementioned example into account, I suggest a different approach.
Consider that some researchers (not preferring spatial approach) simply leave out that context and carry out their study like this. Is their study complete?
If yes, there was no (known) spatial relevance to their study.
If no, that means someone can suggest a proper concept using geospatial approach.
This way the outcome verifies the applied tools and IMHO it does not matter who could provide a tool for that.
The statements like "You are not a geographer, therefore you cannot/are not allowed to study that problem" are simply outdated. ("Geographer" here can be replaced by "social scientist" or other.) This is because the fields of competences became wider; inter- and transdisciplinary approaches are proven to be successful in many cases.
I think the evolution of regional science is a good example for that. 50-60 years ago these studies would have been categorized either to economics or (human) geography or perhaps sociology. But the interactions of these research objects (cities, urban areas, rural zones, etc.) could not be studied properly anymore, if you insist to keep these categories. The discipline first gained attention then recognition. It was certainly not easy and not short, but Paul Krugman in 2008 in his Nobel Prize lecture referred to aspects of regional science, too . (Just around that time [surprise, surprise] a department of our university was renamed to Dept. of Regional Science.)
Summary: the battlefield of authority/competence over a certain research area or using certain tools will fade out as the belligerents get older/die out, or if a new approach dismantles the battlefield into unimportant, therefore negligible chunks.
I would be happy to read your comments on that and/or experience, case histories showing contrasting patterns.

Gamification could be understood as "The application of typical elements of game playing (e. g. point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity, typically as an online marketing technique to encourage engagement with a product or service".
We could be critical of this approach because what lies below is the behavioral model, but the reality is that certain tools like Kahoot (https://kahoot.it/) work very well in the classroom. Students are more motivated to learn and technology has become a central element of teaching.

Maybe landscape artist (started 1970s) articles and landscaping can help. I know that the National Trust in the UK has an enormous expertise on historical gardens or landscapes. Another unlikely source but very good are botanical gardens with both scientific and public intrests (e.g. UGent botanical garden, Royal greeneries in Laeken, the former Belgian federal institute in Meise, the botanical gardens in Leiden, Antwerp, Amsterdam,...). Another library you might contact is the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Also the Atocha railway station in Madrid can give you good insights in indoor gardens (I was at the opening in 1992 and I hope that after the bombings a couple of years ago it has been restored). Some old Zoo's are also very occupied with the botanical side. The Royal Zoo of Antwerp has been growing plants for all sorts of uses.
But never forget plants are also sources of entomological horror!

Yes, you can perform a Cronbach's alpha test on your questionnaire. However, it is not the only measure to validate a questionnaire. The test tells you that your items measure the same concept (or not), it's called a measure of internal consistency. To validate a questionnaire, you need to test several psychometrical properties (e.g., content validity, construct validity, test-retest, ...). Rabindranath Tagore, the 1913 Nobel prize winner in literature from Greater India, presents unique perspectives towards creating universal platforms of philosophical understanding and analysis applicable to various fields of studies. He was blessed to blend and connect spiritual perspectives with events of general interest that have an in-depth influence of life's core events derived from practical exposure to tragedy, creation, devotion and as such.
These do have a special room in the theories and practices related to 'Education'. Working effectively but subtlety. Needs explorations indeed.  
While the contemporary societies understand more of 'solely tangible' aspects, Tagore's influence relates to the notions of 'Offerings' attached to the tangible aspects making the holistic approach magically beneficial for all involved. That's why probably his 'Song Offerings' won him the Nobel in literature.

What is a good kind of ink for footprints of mustelids? It is good option - ink for stamps?

I was involved in a project using tunnels and footprints to detect mustelids. We used brown paper on the floor of the tunnel that had been treated with tannic acid (in a 1/2 & 1/2 ethanol water solution sprayed on then allowed to dry) this reacted by turning black. when touched by another chemical (ferric nitrate in a solution of polyethylene glycol and water) soaked into a felt footpad in the centre of the tunnel.  When an animal went through the tunnel it would step on the foot pad and pick up a small amount of the Ferric nitrate and then stand on one of the strips of paper on its way back out leaving neat black pawprints that are pretty durable even in wet conditions.  The chemicals were easy to mix up on site and nowhere near as messy as using ink. Dear all,
we are going to use the PAM-2500 to measure chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in grapevine. The measurements will be conducted outside, therefore we want to keep it simple, but of course efficient in data aquisition. Therefore dark adaptation is no option for us, bu the instrument has many different functions to circumvent this problem.
I have the following questions:
1. the field screen with the Y(II) measurment provides no light acclimation step with standard actinic light, just a light puls. do you think a standardized acclimations to actinic light is necessary?
2. Fo´is measured under field sceen after the light sat puls and a short period of FR. Is this similar to the FR+Y option?

I have deployed probes to record changes of temperature and light penetration in the seawater before. However, I can't find any probes which can be deployed and record seawater salinity in real time.
Is there any such devices in the market?

I'm shopping for field photosynthesis measuring systems.  The LiCOR 6400 and PP Systems CIRAS-3 both have the option of estimating apparent electron transport rate (ETR) and PSII yield based on fluorometry: basically looking at Chlorophyll fluorescence. The WALZ PAM 2500 is exclusively a fluorometer.  In contrast, the LiCOR 6400 and PP SYSTEMS CIRAS-3 are mainly estimating photosynthetic rate based on differences in CO2 and H2O vapor.  
Have people tried both fluorometry and gas exchange approaches to estimating photosynthesis? What are the relative advantages of both approaches?  Do you really need both systems to get an estimate of photosynthetic rates?  What are the relative errors?

Marcin is mostly right, but you should note that fluorometry can treat more leaves per time. So it might be the method of choice for screening of larger number of plants.

Hi everyone! I aim to present playback calls to wild monkeys from a foraging task, so I would like to use small speakers to attach them with the task. I have been looking for small speakers, but I'm not sure if the quality is gonna be good enough.
Does anybody know any model of small speakers that I can use or has already been tested? Any paper where they use small speakers for playback experiments with animals?

Is it for normal audio frequencies (20 Hz ... 20 kHz) or is it the ultrasound range (for example for marmosets or other small monkeys which vocalize beyond our hearing range)?
Can you specify the frequency range of the sounds that you want to playback and also the required SPL (Sound Pressure Level)?

I am planning a field study that will use exclosures made of fine mesh to keep macroinvertebrates out of patches of plants.  I am concerned that the exclosure, which will be in place for several months) will alter the temperature and precipitation etc. in a way that will affect the plants within.  I'm thinking I need to do one of two things: make sure the exclosure material is water permeable and breatheable but still restricts access by insects (I am wondering if aluminium window screen would suffice), or else have some kind of "treatment effect" control (i.e., a similar mesh but with bigger holes that will not restrict insect access).  I don't have time to run pre-season trials to test the effects of the cages on the space in the enclosure, and I'm unable to find examples in the literature.  Any advice or personal experience regarding materials or design options? Thanks in advance.

I worked with entomological cages in coffee crops made with PVC tubes. The cage was covered with white muslin cloth and velcro for doors. The size used was 2,1 x 1,8 m. This insect exclosure prevented the entry of small insects and allowed the plant to transpire. We evaluated these cages during  6 months  under field conditions and worked very well. Please find attached a photo.

I would like to use “Pollocks Robust Design” for a CMR study of endangered arboreal snails and would like some feedback on my approach. 
Collection surveys will be 2 sets of day-night-day data collection with 3 weeks in between events.    Or would “better” data be collected with more visits? The snails are  sedentary during the day- easier to spot at night using lights while they are moving. So, we know we find more snails at night. Is it ok to mix up the time of day that the data collection occurs?  
Survey Area is about ½ acre of enclosed habitat but the snails are concentrated in hotspots within this area. Should I survey those hotspots to get the maximum number of individuals or should I choose random quadrats within the ½ acre with the chance that the quad will have no snails. If quadrats then how many? I am planning to do a timed collection (one man hour for each area) but should I search to exhaustion in each section instead? One of my goals is to determine the approximate number of snails in this enclosed area but much of the habitat is too tall to be searched
I am planning to use Program MARK for the data analysis- any guidance regarding doing Robust Design analysis is welcome. I have worked my way through MARK before for closed capture CMR.

Just a few thoughts. If you want estimates of N, make sure your survey areas are consistent. If you want estimates to apply in a general sense to your area of interest, but cannot exhaustively survey the whole thing, then you need to employ a probabilistic sampling approach. You can account for detection heterogeneity in time of day by using that as a covariate in your analysis. Otherwise you will have unmodeled heterogeneity resulting in overdispersion. The more quadrats and sampling you do, and the better estimates of detection you get, the better your estimates of N etc. will be. Make sure to model average for N.

I am currently working on evaluating the effects of climate change on marine plankton using a mesocosm facility. I have some queries
The capacity of my tank is 2000 L - Indoor facility
1. Do I need a wave maker for recirculation in the tank or is it enough if I use a high capacity blower (e.g. 80 HP).
2. What kind of instruments should I used for CO2 diffuser?
3. I am planning to run one set of experiment for 20 days, the total capacity of seawater will be 2000 L, Do I need a separate recirculating system?
4. I will be drawing around 10 L for various analysis on alternate days for a period of 20 days.. how much will this effect the total volume ? I don't think refilling is a good idea, kindly suggest me some alternative.
5. What are the general problems that we could face while using a mesocosm facility?

If i may suggest some literature that you will find very useful and will answer some of your questions:
The Guide to Best Practice in Ocean Acidification Research:
A methods review from Dr. Cornwall et al., 
1) You do not really need a wave maker, but a recirculation pump, unless of course wave motion is a parameter that you want to add to your experiment;
2) For CO2 diffusion it is advised to use an atomizer, but strongly depends on what kind of tank (e.g. if your tank is closed or open) and on your CO2 injection systems. Also in your case with a 2000L tank you will need A LOT of CO2 to maintain high CO2 to simulate future oceans conditions, that will be hard (but not impossible) and costly to accomplish;
4) if you have a closed system, you have to consider refilling... using UV filtered seawater, or a synthetic one that you can DIY
5) there are many problems that you face, and these are similar to the ones that aquarist and aquaculture professionals experience, so you will find a lot about proper methods of cultivating planktonic communities. For example, water changes, proper nutrients concentration, oxygen depletion, in your case also CO2 diffusion, temperature maintenance, proliferation of unwanted organisms... etc etc... 
personal advices:
I just wonder why you need so much volume, since you need to replicate your experiment, there are simpler (and easier treated) tanks that are designed for planktonic communities, for example a very very simple one that you can build yourself: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-07/ds/images/image002.jpg

I ask this because I see a variety of different outcomes in experimental studies with high tag burdens having no negative effects on swimming ability and growth to high burdens having detrimental effects. At the same time I'm seeing recently published field studies with tag burdens breaching 10%. I think we are at the point where we can agree that the old 2% rule of thumb is untenable on wild fish (certainly using 69 kHz set ups) but I think the disparity in the literature from the last decade needs resolving.
