Dear Colleagues,
I am an Italian postdoc researcher and I would like to spend from one to three months abroad visiting to collaborate with some colleagues because I am really interested in their work.
Unfortunately, my university does not have any kind of resource to finance this project; do you know any grant/fellowship that I can use to finance this visit (within the European Union)?
Thank you.

I have a B. Sc in Physics. During my study, I prepared my graduation research in publishable paper form, and then I submitted it to arXiv. Can I add it to my CV? and does this help me to increase my opportunities to receive a master's scholarship?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Prof. Mahmoud H. A. Saleh & all the honorable researchers,
Preprints are defined as an author’s version of a research manuscript prior to formal peer review at a journal, which is deposited on a public server. ResearchGate (RG) said about "Preprints": "early-stage research" and "Draft paper before peer review".
On the other side, RG is not a publisher and, in turn, uploaded unpublished text is not regarded as a publication. Hence, a preprint is an author's own original or draft version of their paper before any peer review has taken place and before it is published. As soon as it's posted, a preprint becomes a permanent part of the scientific record and, in turn, it can be citable with its own unique DOI.
Now, before answering this valuable question, please let me give my own opinion about the preprint dilemma (مُعضلة ما قبل الطباعة):
I have a different perspective on uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published. Why do you let others know about your insights and methodologies before publication? You should avoid telling the other researchers about the details of any one of your papers until it has been published and seeing your name by yourself. You may say that I am somewhat old-fashioned, but I have a different perspective on uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published by your name. My advice is not to put your research anywhere until it is published. It is a security issue:
  • Your manuscript may be copied and then published by others before you can do that. This stealing of your paper might be happening. So, you must wait until the paper is accepted and then published in that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
  • You should avoid telling the other researchers about the details of any one of your papers until it has been published and you are seeing your name by yourself.
  • A journal may have automated plagiarism software to check the paper before admitting it to the reviewing process. There are chances that your paper can get a rejection at any point. Thus, to avoid this problem. Publish the preprint after you got the paper as "ACCEPTED".
  • There may be a "cold war" between the professors of a given department. They do not like to discuss ideas as others will "steal" them and publish an article on them without giving credit to the one from whom they got the idea. My suggestion is to keep your work "private" and share it only with those who are really interested.
  • Academic publishing remains a competitive process. If someone else has recently published a paper very similar to mine, mine is less likely to be accepted. So although I may share my topic, I prefer to keep my methodology, findings, and discussion private, until published in a peer-reviewed journal. So, there is a high chance that someone may claim your idea as theirs!
  • Preprint gives a false feeling of security. Personally, I would always wait until the paper is accepted by the editor of a journal. After that, I can post it as a regular research item on any platform you wish.
  • A reminder for all respected researchers: Don't put any research, including preprint, anywhere until you are certain that it is published and tagged with your name. The information presented in the preprint is potentially available to be stolen and republished. There is also a chance that someone may plagiarize your paper!
Finally, for the coming future, do not upload any paper anywhere until it is published with your name. Even if it is a "preprint"! For the time being, If you had done something like that as a "preprint", for instance, I advise you to delete the preprint from any elsewhere and wait for two months before sending the paper to any journal.

I am a regular PhD scholar in Dept. of Mathematics at National Institute of Technology Meghalaya, Shillong, from July, 2017. At the end of July, 2022, 5 years of my PhD is to complete, and then I will not get fellowship. I want to join some college as the post of Assistant Professor, from August, 2022, and to continue my PhD work for 1 year more; and I want to request my institute (NIT Meghalaya) to allow me to do PhD work from home, I don't want to convert my regular PhD to part-time PhD; can it be allowed to me officially to do so, if yes, what would be the process? Please give some advices.
Thank you.
Relevant answer
Answer
Actually when the research allocated years have ended up that you can extend for further one year in order to complete the research or to submit Thesis.
This is possible either to continue or to join your parent institution that you can complete the doctorate in the house or your institution.
The valid letters are the authentication to do further steps to continue the PhD in the University or in your college campus.
Mostly, the researchers are looking for peaceful situation and conducive environment where the research or Thesis could be submitted in time because the college may not be supportive for the final research process. This is general thought among the researchers because IITs campus implies always research enhancing environment that was why mist of the researchers have preferred the higher level institution for doctoral research.

Dear Sajiya,
thank you for your posting. I will try to give a quick answer on both questions.
1. Where to get a grant.
A) You can look up the DAAD portal (DAAD = German Academic Exchange Programme). In the Scholarship database you will find the most important institutional grants (including Humboldt etc):
B) You check homepages of colleagues if they have open positions. Or you send emails to them asking if they have open positions.
2. How to find suitable places/colleagues for a post-doc?
This depends on what you want to do during your post-doc.
A) You want to continue research on the topic of your PhD. Then it's simple. You know the experts in the field, you check where they are located and you write them an email.
Concerning research especially in Germany, there is an expert on any topic in Germany.
B) You want to switch from your PhD research to something different and you have a specific idea about the topic.
Then you have to find the experts in this new field and write them an email. ...
You can recognise experts in the field from reviews in important journals, from books and book chapters.
C) You want to switch from your PhD reseach to something different but you are not decided what.
No problem, start making up your mind in which direction you want to work: organic, inorganic, bio, materials, analytics, .... whatever. Then check for the hot topics. They will probably lie in the fields of "energy conversion" or "medical chemistry". Having decided what to do, it is like B).
D) You don't care about the topic of your post-doctoral work. You just want to do research in Germany (US, UK, France). Don't get me wrong, but that is a weak starting point for a post-doc application. I am getting such unselective applications very often and I always reject them. The reason is simple. You are a well-educated scientists and you have specialised skills. If you are trying to enter a completely new field, you have no skills at all and why should somebody hire you as post-doc, if he/she can have somebody with broad skills in this topic.
A very last, but important point:
Approaching my colleagues is not always easy. Sending email frequently does not help - they simply do not respond. What can you do:
1. If you tried for a specific colleague and he/she did not answer, modify your application (may it was not good enough), write in more detail why you selected him/her and try again.
2. Try others. My experience is that many of my colleagues do NEVER answer.
3. Maybe you add a sentence to your email like this: If you do not have open positions for post-docs at the moment, or my portfolio is not perfectly meeting your expectations, I would be happy to receive suggestions for other colleagues in the field.
Best wishes

With limited research on the differences in how faculty, graduate students, and professional staff conceptualize their professional and disciplinary credibility in relation to SoTL, we usually demonstrate the following key factors for our credibility in University's assesment framework;
1) Demontrating our conceiveness as researchers in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
2) Demonstrating the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning fit within our own disciplinary or professional identity.
3) Demonstrating what, if any, barriers do we (researchers) perceive as impediments to our self-identification as SoTL researchers.

In some university settings, tenure-track faculty members accept a heavy commitment to scholarship and research, whereas the clinical faculty members tend to have a strong commitment to teaching and/or service. Aside the foregoing, what are other conditions of service or job requirement that differentiate a clinical faculty member from his/her tenured-tract colleague?
Relevant answer
Answer
A tenure-track faculty member must progress towards, and achieve, tenure to retain his/her position within the tenure track. Once tenure is earned, however, a tenured faculty member's appointment has no end date. In contrast, clinical and instructor appointments are granted for a limited term.

Well, thank you for your important question and forink the different responses. I think that adding a coauthor implies that s/he has contributed in a way or another to data-collection, data-analysis, or the improvement of the quality of the paper. However, some researchers write their papers individually, and agree that they add each other's names in order to increase their publication record and score. It is important to note here that this kind of research behaviour may differ from one culture to another depending on ethical issues, convictions, conflict of interest, trust, etc.

Hello dear.
As the majority of you know, to catch a scholarship is an extremely complex and hard process. Believe it or not, even who won a scholarship once, would not be able to do it again if they go for it from scratch.
In your opinion, what factors can determine that you can hunt a scholarship while compete with other rivals or lose it? range the scores for following factors from 0 to 12 based on their relative importance.
- the number of published ISI articles in top journals with high impact factor.
- the number of well-known international conferences that you have participated.
- the quality of recommendations that your previous supervisors have written you, kindly.
- the grades of your transcripts and quality of your previous universities.
- the high grade of an English certification, such as an academic IELTS score = 8.0.
- the quality of your research proposal.
- the background of your work experiences and how many years you have worked in your field.
- the luck.
- the age
- the nationality.

'An initial review of "name of article" has made it clear that this submission does not fit within the scope and focus of Secularism and Nonreligion as it stands. We would be delighted to consider a reworked version of the article if you can  more clearly position it within the interdisciplinary scope of the journal by engaging clearly with scholarship in the history, sociology and/or anthropology of secularism. A concerted reading of some of our back issues should provide a solid grounding. Also, making the broader implications of the article beyond the Kazakh context would strengthen things. Alternatively, you might also consider submitting this manuscript to another journal. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, as I say, if you do rework things as suggested we would happily consider putting this through the review process.' This is decision of the journall editor. What is mean?
Relevant answer
Answer
It means that your article does not seem to fall within the scope (purpose) of the journal. The editors are willing to consider a resubmission if you rework the manuscript to be more in line with their scope. They suggest that you read older issues to get a better feel for the scope.
In saying that their scope is interdisciplinary, they mean that manuscripts need to address their topics from the perspective of more than one discipline.

Hi Sanjeevkumar,
A one year masters does not stop you from going for a PhD. However, you need to clarify if it was a taught (professional) masters or a research masters program as this will determine which direction your further studies will go.
If you had a taught program, you will have to continue in a taught program e.g. if had an MBA, you can proceed with a DBA or any other professional program. However, to continue with a research PhD, you will need to get a research based masters program.
Various universities in Europe have different choices for particular courses, thus, do not rule out the possibility of pursuing your PhD in Europe as possibilities abound. So, go to any school of your choice's website and check for their requirements for the course of your choice. However note that a PhD is not necessarily about the course but the topic you are interested in. Your research interest might be supply chain but you could find a supervisor who is interested in the topic under engineering, environmental or any other department. Just don't stereotype yourself. As I always say, opportunities abound.

I wrote an article that I sent to be considered for publication for several journals. One prestigious journal rejected the article on the basis that it does not contribute to the common ground of scholarship of the contributors of the journal (they did not say that the article does not fall within their scope).
A second journal accepted the article for the same reason for which it has been rejected by the first journal; one of the reviewers said that the article is not similar to anything in their altitudes and that is why they think it would be a good contribution to the journal.
Where do you think academic journals stand regarding their motives or reasons for accepting and/or rejecting manuscripts? Should a researcher in a certain discipline go after innovation or should s/he go on the steps of those who preceded him?

Dear Dr.Singh,
Firstly, Congratulation for Ph.D. Degree.
Currently, many universities are offering for postdoc study.
In India, you have a good opportunity to work in a research center in IITs so find the potential supervisors who are working in your search area and send them an email.I think IITM and IITB will be best for you to continue your postdoc study. these colleges are also offering a good salary.
In overseas, Germany and Canada are the best option for you as per understanding. visit the Mendeley website and find postdoc opportunities. In addition, you can also email the potential supervisor reading your interest. If they have funds then they will definitely respond to you.

Dear Colleagues,
I hope this finds you well.
This is Muhammad Hussam Alothman, a Syrian medical student interested in neuroscience and neurosurgery. I'm getting my MD degree in November 2019.
Despite the scarcity of researches and war settings in Syria, I worked hard during the last three years to enhance my CV as a future neurosurgeon and neuroscientist.
I'm currently a reviewer at the Journal of Medical Case Reports (JMCR). I've got the PHRP, CRT, and IPPCR course certificates online from the NIH.
I'm also interested in medical neuroscience; especially the fields of neurobiology and neuro-oncology because my long-term goal is to take part in translational researches whereby I can integrate the basic medical sciences and the clinical practice of neurosurgery.
I'm looking for a post-doctoral fellowship (or research associate) in the fields of neurosurgery or basic medical sciences in the USA.
I'm looking to start my career with a high-rank institution and I think such opportunity will change my life and become the start point of my career as a future neuroscientist and neurosurgeon.
I've connected more than 300 professors in the USA for such a position and no positive replies yet.
I've attached my CV and I'm looking enthusiastically for your reply.
NB: Even if you don't have an opening please review my CV and give me your valuable feedback to strengthen my weak points.
Regards,
Muhammad Hussam Alothman

Dear Alothman,
First I congratulate you for your motivation of the research. The following important point must be in your mind. There are often times when added research would be required to make it easier for a study to go forward. Your research plans could include an analysis of the methods of study that could work in the future and what points about a topic could be reviewed in such studies. The recommendations that are incorporated into your paper can certainly be important to your work. Be certain when writing your paper that you have clear recommendations that are easy to follow and can be utilized right and are not overly complicated or tough to use in some way.
Regards.

In order to obtain a Canadian work permit, international postdoctoral fellows must:
  • Hold a valid passport
  • Obtain a letter of invitation/offer of postdoctoral appointment from a McGill University faculty member (letter must indicate the total stipend amount). If you are receiving funding from a source outside of Canada, the source of funding and stipend should be indicated in the letter of invitation/offer.
  • The letter of invitation from the department should state that you are being invited as a postdoctoral fellow, as well as the duration of your postdoctoral appointment and the level/source of stipend that you will be receiving. You may use this letter in support of your application for a CIC valid work permit.
  • Ensure that your academic unit has completed the offer of employment online through the Employer Portal and paid the associated fee before your work permit application is submitted. You will need to include the offer of employment number with your work permit application.
  • Complete the CIC work permit application and submit it to the Canadian visa office serving your home country. CIC provides a list of Canadian visa offices outside of Canada on their website.
  • Postdocs who already hold a CIC work permit and wish to extend their stay in Canada should complete a CIC work permit application as referred to in the renewal process.
  • As a postdoctoral fellow, you will not need a Certificate of Acceptance in the Province of Quebec (Certificat d’acceptation du Québec). Consequently, the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) process is not applicable to postdoctoral fellows as they are registered at McGill as advanced research trainees/full-time students in a non-degree program.
  • It is the responsibility of the postdoc to obtain the required valid legal documentation from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
  • New postdoctoral fellows who hold a spousal open work permit should note that the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research (MESRS) does not recognize spousal open work permits for postdoctoral registration, although they may accept a spousal work permit for your initial postdoctoral registration for a very short period of time. The holder of a spousal work permit must obtain their own work permit, following the procedures listed above, immediately following their initial registration.

Relevant answer
Answer
Attiya Zafar if you publish in a top level journal, that for sure will improve your chances on being admitted and/or get a scholarship in a university abroad. Currently EVERYWHERE there is this foolish fetishism on publication/publication/publication - as if science will be about publication points and ratings rather than generating knowledge. It has become, in fact, "a game" where people meet editors and people actually get paid or receive promotions based on their publications, so it is more a business than real science these days. Publication in "scientific journals" is indeed a very lucrative and dirty business, see for example:

Dear colleagues and students,
At the Information Engineering and Computer Science department of the University of Trento we are looking for enthusiastic PhD students interested in solving realistic-size and practical planning, scheduling and acting problems in the hot topics of Industry 5.0 and Hospital of the Future.
Could you please forward the vacancy description below to anyone that comes to mind? Or please let me know if you'd like to know a bit more.
Thanks in advance,
Marco Roveri
____________________________________________________________________
PhD positions in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of University of Trento in challenging projects to develop new algorithms for planning, scheduling and acting under uncertainty, and making these operate in industrial (e.g. manufacturing, intra-logistics) and civil (e.g. hospital, pharmaceutical) relevant environments.
Are you interested in developing new algorithms, extending state-of-the-art AI techniques, and prepared to take-on real-life problems involving advanced automation and robotic applications collaborating with humans?
Join us in a team that considers the operational planning, scheduling and actuation (motion planning) of advanced robotic platforms (AGV, UAV, ...) to orchestrate their operations in collaborating with human to achieve complex business relevant objectives like e.g. reduce time-span, optimize resource consumption, quickly adapt to contingencies (e.g. product and/or platform faults, changes in objectives, changes in human operations). As the capabilities (e.g. dexterity) of robotic agents grows and their adoption in solving complex tasks collaborating with humans increases together with an increase in the complexity of the objectives, the problems of finding feasible plans to orchestrate the different agents, and of dynamically adapt and react to run-time contingencies to fulfill the high level objectives are becoming more and more difficult.
The main tasks for the PhD student are to work on algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques from the fields of constraint programming, mathematical optimization, path planning, evolutionary algorithms and/or reinforcement learning i) to solve such planning, scheduling, actuation (motion planning) and reactive adaptation problems; ii) to deepen our understanding of these techniques; iii) and to show how they can be successfully combined to solve problems of industrial and civil relevance. Moreover, the PhD student will be allowed to experiment the developed techniques and algorithms in realistic-size facilities (e.g. Robotic Labs at the University, and industrial facilities joint with the University of Trento) equipped with state-of-the-art robotic and automation platforms.
Please apply through the Admission link (https://ict.unitn.it/education/admission/call-for-application) on this website: https://ict.unitn.it
Deadline for application: 16 June 2020, 4:00 Italian Time (GMT +2)

Relevant answer
Answer
I think I see what is happening.
You have a series of answers, one of them being "Help from family." Except sometimes it doesn't get coded properly... But you may be running into an issue with text formatting.
Will the text always be "Help from family" or could it also be "help from family"? You listed both in your question; however, the way your ifelse statement is generated is only searching for a single version of this, in your case the capitalized version.
Here is what I think you can do:
1) Check for unique responses to ensure everything is properly parsed.
unique(data$gelkay)
ought to return 1 instance of each of your categories; if it returns two or more, you have some recoding to do. R and string matching by default see "H" and "h" as different characters.
2) If there is recoding to do, you have some options to pursue. Is it only capitalized letters that are affecting your unique values? You could always convert gelkay to all lowercase.
data$gelkay <- stringr::str_to_lower(data$gelkay)
The other alternative is to rephrase your search criteria if you are familiar with regex.
ifelse(
stringr::str_detect(data$gelkay,"[Hh]elp from family"),0,1)
)
will match both strings. If there are other situations such as typos, you will have to do some corrections to account for them. In these situations, and in general, I have found that the case_when() function that is part of the tidyverse is an excellent tool to use.
library(tidyverse)
data %>%
mutate(
gelkay = stringr::str_to_lower(gelkay),
financial_independence = case_when(
str_detect(gelkay,"help from family") ~ 0,
TRUE ~ 1
)
)
Let me know if these work for you. Or, if you are stuck and can't figure out how to fix any issues you encounter should there be any in the unique(), I can help you address those as well.
