Imagine we have ten pictures of faces and we have them rated for attractiveness. Let's say 20 participants rate them using a 1-5 Likert scale (1=unattractive; 5=attractive). Another 20 participants rate the same faces using a 1-7 Likert scale (1=unattractive; 7=attractive). Finally, another 20 participants rate those same faces using a 1-9 Likert scale (1=unattractive; 9=attractive).
We assume there is some underlying quality, "attractiveness", that these different scales are trying to quantify. How best can we analyse these data to get at the question of this underlying measure, how well each scale measures it, and whether some scales do a better job than others, etc.?
Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions!

Answer
If you have other measures of related constructs that were assessed in the same individuals, you could look at convergent validity (i.e., whether there are high correlations of the attractiveness scores with the other theoretically closely related constructs). Likewise, you could study discriminant validity relative to other, theoretically unrelated (or less strongly related) constructs. You could also examine at whether your attractiveness scores allow you to predict relevant outcome variables (criterion validity).

This is mainly addressed to biologists, especially those who are studying sensory perception in animals and/or human beings. Also, people from other areas, such as medicine or engineering, who have turned their attention to neuroscience are welcome to contribute. I want to know how our system extracts pertinent features such as frequency selective transduction in the cochlea by the hair cells and orientation selective neurons in the brain. What other such processing is known, that perform dedicated feature extraction from the sensory inputs ?

Can anyone point me to a freely available database of Nordic (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian etc.) face images? Does such a thing exist?
Thanks!

Hi! For anyone else seeking such a database, I have combed through all of the resources listed here in addition to numerous other sources in order to construct the Face Image Meta-Database (fIMDb): https://cliffordworkman.com/resources/ The fIMDb includes info or estimates on: number of photo sets per source (and numbers of neutral and other sets — e.g., facial emotions), number of subjects per source (with approximate sex distributions), total number of images, approximate number of viewpoints, whether the sources includes photos from more than one ethnicity, whether it includes more than one age group, whether meta-data are available, the photo category (e.g., posed, wild), the reference(s) for the source (e.g. DOIs). I hope this will aid others interested in conducting research on responses to faces.

We are looking for a large database (200+) of pictures of human faces with neutral facial expression, in order to conduct an experiment on nonverbal learning mechanisms. We have difficulties finding appropriate pictures because we need people in the pictures to be  Caucasian, age 20 to 40, with neutral facial expression, and on neutral background. Also, it would be very good if the database is free for research purposes use. Can somebody please suggest the existing database that he or she knows?
Thank you in advance,
Jovana

Hi Kushi, you may find the RAVDESS helpful in your paradigm. It's a validated multimodal database of emotional speech and song. It contain 7356 recordings in English, with 8 emotions: calm, happy, sad, angry, fearful, surprise, disgust, and neutral, each at two emotional intensities.

My collaborators and I are putting together a symposium for Psychonomics 2017 and have some findings that go against the grain (we don't find an attentional bias to select faces across several studies).  We are looking for other presenters for this symposium, so if you have data that is relevant that you'd like to present with us please email me directly - ebirming@sfu.ca

Are there any face stimulus sets provided at a higher resolution than those of the Chicago Face Database (2444x1818)?
Relevant answer
Answer
 Hi Matthew
There are a great many face stimulus sets around, but the problem is that the older sets have a much lower resolution than the CFD resolution. However, there are a few out there. I have added some links to get you started. The 2015 FERET programme in the US has captured the images at 14.1 Megapixels resolution, and the Glasgow 2010 paper has images at 6 Megapixels.
That should get you started.

We conducted an experiment measuring automatically emotions in the face during three n-back tasks with different task difficulties. Often, the different emotions show a fast vacillating, i.e. significant changes of the intensity of the emotion with mostly a low amplitude.
In the literature oscillating or vacillating emotions are in most cases defined as changes between emotions. In papers that report about vacillation of the same emotion often the changes are not described as fast as we have observed (within three seconds or less).
Is there a theory about fast vacillating emotions (i.e. fast changes of its amplitude)?
Do you know good literature with more information (e.g. experiments, theory, observations, ...) about fast vacaillating emotions?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello,
We had done some experiments on objectively quantifying the vacillating emotions that get expressed through facial expressions. You may find this paper to be useful. Let me know. This paper was published in IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition in 2013. I have attached this paper.

That's good advice, I might use that database for other purposes!
One of my supervisors pointed me in a good direction, and I actually managed to get ready made stimuli sets of Arab-Muslims. from the Dasgupta et al. (2009) "fanning the flames of prejudice".

In addition, there are tolerant methods of
face recognition. They do not necessarily
restore uncomplete faces. But: once a
person has been identified, the face
could be restored with a 3D model from
a database.

Hello Network, I am looking into the Noldus Face Reader software for an emotion project expected to run this Autumn/Winter. Does anyone have experience using this software or can recommend other video based software? I have many questions. Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
We have some mixed experiences with FaceReader during appreciation of music; so besides losses of the signal from time to time, the software runs quite good IF YOU CALIBRATE it on the specific faces which you will analyze later on. I can send you the paper directly via mail,  if you want it .
All the best,

I made a study with two types of targets (3 shematic faces or 3 schematic houses). The task where participants had to detect the 3 schematic houses and ignore distractors (photo of houses or faces) seems to be more difficult (reaction time bigger, more false alarms) than the task where participants had to detect the 3 shematic faces.
As the heterogeneity of the 3 schematic houses is more pronounced than the heterogeneity of the 3 schematic faces, i wanted to know if some studies have investigated the impact of the heterogeneity of the target on attentional capture by distractors ?
Relevant answer
Answer
We are practically hardwired to pay attention to faces, which makes sense from the perspective of evolution.  Houses are recent in our history.  It would thus be easier to resist distractors when looking at pictures of faces than when looking  to pictures of houses.  That might account for your results perhaps more than heterogeneity.
