Hello,
we are planning to run an experiment involving aversive stimuli, some of which may be phobic to some. Therefore, I am looking for a screening self-report tool in the English language that can be digitally implemented, and ideally, is freely available. Ideally, the measure would be relatively simple, include the most common objects/situations, and ask as few questions as possible, as concisely as possible.
Our research question itself is unrelated to phobias - we are not looking to reliably identify people with phobias. Rather, the goal is to exclude potentially at-risk people from our participant pool, meaning false alarms are less of a problem than misses.
Can someone give me a recommendation? WSQ questions 6+7 ( ) look rather intuitive, and appear to have at least okay-ish sensitivity, but as I am not an expert on the topic, I thought I'd ask for advice first.
Thanks in advance!

We are trying to manipulate undergraduate students' emotions towards a task using either controlling or autonomy-supportive instructions, delivered using appropriate video clips. We intend to measure physiological arousal through EEG. for emotions experienced during autonomy supportive and controlling situations.

I was wondering whether you might share your experience with skin preparation for facial EMG (measurement of facial expression of emotions). My biggest concerns are: (1) is it necessary to abrade the skin, and (2) how do you practically handle bearded participants? Do you shave them or ask them to shave before the experiment, e.g. during recruitment? I would also appreciate any other tips that will help us run our first facial EMG experiment.

Hi Lukasz,
Prior to electrodes placement, you must properly prepare the participants’ skin in accordance with SENIAM recommendations (Hermens, Freriks, Disselhorst-Klug and Rau 2000): the skin is rubbed with gauze soaked in alcohol and a conductive gel need to be applied to the electrodes to reduce the impedance of skin-electrode interface below 5 kΩ and thus improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
For bearded participants, there are two solutions: 1) beard is short and you can use the procedure described above; 2) beard is too long and you will have to shave it before skin preparation. As you said, it is necessary to inform participants during recruitment.
I hope it was helpful for you.
Best
