Humor in Music and the Performing Arts
Humor in classical music has a long tradition as shown by such playful vocabulary items as the French gavotte, which like the Irish and English gigue or jig is music for a fast-moving dance. A scherzo is a musical joke while a cappricio is a composition that is irregular in form and usually lively and whimsical. A divertimento is a light and entertaining instrumental composition. And a rondo is a composition whose principal theme is repeated three or more times in the same key, interspersed with subordinate themes.
In our PowerPoint about “Humor and Music,” we discuss the musical humor of Anderson, Bach, Beethoven, Borge, Confrey, Debussy, Gilbert and Sullivan, Grieg, Grofé, Haydn, Igoodesman and Joo, Joplin, Lehrer, “Monte Python,” Mozart, Offenbach, Pachelbel, Prokofiev, Rossini, Russell, Saint-Saëns, Schickeley, Simon and Garfunkel, Strauss, Wagner, Webber, Vivaldi, and Yankovic.

It is noted that many college teachers prioritize academic rigor over entertainment. However, too much rigor can detract from the primary purpose of teaching: adding value and learning. What are your thoughts on this approach, and why?
Relevant answer
Answer
Depends, on the target group, whether children or adult learners. Pedagogy is the preferred method for training/teaching children, while andragogy is suitable for adults. There should always be more fun, and Interactive components in the lesson plans for young learners, while for the grown-ups, to avoid the learning becoming boring, interactive exercises could be added. In the contemporary system, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education in schools, colleges, and universities, emphasizes a hands-on learning technique that aids students apply academic knowledge to solve real-life or real-world problems, more effectively. Of course, learning should be fun for everyone!!

I have been struggling with deciding my master thesis since i was in last year of my degree. My ultimate goal of all my research is to help students getting the most out of their university life in term of education. However, how to achieve that, i still do not know where to start. At one point I wanted to make my topic general and explore the psycho-social challenges that students face during university with regard to academic well-being( because it was the closest things I find to the idea of getting the most out of university). But then recently I got new idea, and instead of focusing on what makes someone does not study. I rather focus on what would make someone study and prioritize learning instead of entertainment. And before any of these topics, 4 month ago i thought maybe i could start with the issue of digital distraction. And now, I am scared of venturing into any of these topics because I am scared i will invest a lot of time and energy to discover it was worthless.
So What you guys did when you were about to decide your thesis topic? And do anyone think any of these topics seems valid
Relevant answer
Answer
When I did my second Master's, I focused on finishing. You should too. Pick a research idea you can realistically do within your degree time.
"Digital distraction" is a good modern topic. But also think about how tech helps students learn. Technology can be good or bad, so explore both sides

Learning a language other than English excites new learners because it opens doors to diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences, fostering a deeper connection with the world. It allows them to communicate with more people, access unique literature, films, and traditions, and gain a sense of accomplishment and cognitive flexibility. The process of mastering a new language often feels like unlocking a new way of thinking and seeing the world, making it a rewarding and enriching journey.

I suggest identity is prominent and with that division. Constructing ideas as a means of explaining our existence, and simply entertainment (stories, songs and poetry).
Although in the present we often view religion as about monotheism this is shortsighted and unreasonable.
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Stanley Wilkin , what would you say to the suggestion that at the end of the day religions are as much as worldviews as the different sciences, in that they offer both explanations (maybe circular ones, with specific rules about what counts as evidence) and rules to live in harmony together? And for the latter, the prescriptive rules to live together, they may do this better than the sciences? Just a thought.

I wanted to entertain what h-index is, what i10-index is and their differences.
Relevant answer
Answer
Your h index is the highest number N for which you have at least N papers with N citations while the i10 is simply the number of your papers with 10 citations.
Don't bother much about the i10, while it is calculable, even fewer people care about that than about the h index.

I read this amazing paper - African Languages and African Literature Cecilia A. Eme & Davidson U. Mbagwu DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/ujah.v12i1.7
My argument is this: I strongly think that every African author is an individual with their own aspirations. Why would any author go through the pains of learning to write in African languages when they have a rich language like English for their stories?
I strongly think African authors are trying to do the work of the anthropologist. A novelist's job is to entertain his readers with interesting fictional events. I have never seen British authors coming together to write in old Shakespearian English collectively. That kind of English is lost and remains in old literature. Why should African languages be an exception? If we wish to preserve our languages in written form, let Historians and anthropologists do the job, not novelists.

Everyone writes in the language he believe, he belong to.

Thank for Anita Z Goldschmied'comment:
Thank you for the topic and for introducing him. I am very active and always have been, so I can't imagine a life without movement. That is probably why I cannot consider issues of order and sides here, facts and beliefs, but acknowledge how they affect and shape one another to emerge effects. In terms of application of theory, my regime combines running, HIT, weight lifting, dancing, mindfulness, walking and many more in perfect harmony, never in opposition or hierarchy but interconnected and complementing, just like a problem and its (temporary) solution that we all have to figure out ourselves. Although I would be cautious with this translation, I will finish with his sentence: "After 10 years of hard work, I created my own story to entertain everyone."
From "empty nose" patient to triathlon "iron man"
This is my story."After 10 years of hard work, I created my own story to entertain everyone."
Many people have experienced, first-hand the saying, " toothache is not a disease, it just hurts really badly ". Toothache can destroy a person if it lasts for many days. Fortunately, there are dentists who can handle the disease.
But do you know "empty nose syndrome" ?
It is a kind of breathing pain, called an incurable illness, and the doctor who was as effective as god, bringing the dying back to life, is helpless treating it.
Now, let me tell you that there is a  patient with 27 years medical history of
"empty nose syndrome”. At that time, 27 years ago, he lost a large tooth and for many years experienced double torture with trauma of the body and spirit because of the disease and has experienced the feeling like the heart has cracked open and  his tendons have  pulled out. Because of the extreme pain he once let himself fall into the emotions of sorrow and despair; living was no better than dying. It was 20 years after the operation that he learned that the disease he was fighting against was actually a " incurable disease " Fortunately, he is a surgeon who likes  sports since he was a child. He is also an optimistic activist and a practitioner of positive psychology. After seeking medical advice so many times, his treatment failed and his emotion dropped into hopelessness. He learned from the pain and did not complain about it to others. He regarded it as Heaven’s challenge to him....

Many thanks Huabin Chen for sharing; these are my thoughts: medical science has 2 methodical pathways, A) quantification B) case studies.
These are not exclusive, but can be merged. Strong signals of illness and disease can be detected by quantifying, the weaker signals can be collected by case studies. Medical diagnosis and clinical diagnostics should be improved by merging methodologies.

By shifting from passive to active learning, the metaverse can transform the present learning paradigm into entertaining, engaging, meaningful, social, iterative, and joyous. It will change many aspects and create new ways of addressing our present learning styles' issues. The following are some questions that bring our attention to discuss further.
1) Will it help deal with diversity in higher education institutes, or will it be more complicated?
2) Will it help monitor exams more effectively in a non-face-to-face environment, or will it be cumbersome?
Relevant answer
Answer
Some elements of metaversal education are already in place. Simulation-based trainings are an example of that. If the transition to an educational setting is well planned, it will save lots of costs as it is expected to move education to cloud systems. No need to spare anything for big buildings etc. Most probably, normal class exams will be personalized and based on learning analytics. The most important thing is whether educators will be well-equipped in advance to help this transition as in most cases technological developments have been always one step ahead, forcing society to catch up with the newer tools by paying lots of money.

Most of you will have experienced that your paper was rejected. Sometimes there is a good critic, most times its quite funny (and a bit sad) to read how editors evaluate potential publications.
I would like to start best of with rejections - to entertain and learn from. Please feel free to share your experiences here. And good luck next time!
Relevant answer
Answer
And let me just start with one:
My paper was rejected because "For your particular paper, 16% of your text (798 words) is the same as a previous paper by the same authors published in the literature by Bard et al. (2019) in the journal, Polymers". The dublication was "in the Experimental section (Section 2)". This was considered "an indication of the lower level of novelty contained in the paper."
I think its really sad. Of course the experimental section is the same with other publications if i used the same methods. That does not mean there is less novelty, its just really standard methods (3-point bending, fiber volumen content determination) that I just for a new composite material.
But thanks for the elaborative feedback, just sad that the paper was not even read.

It is so extreme now days, especially violence against women. It has become ubiquitous - that it is the norm. An interesting research project could compare domestic violence against women vs violence against women in television. Seems like almost every crime program represents murdered and tortured women. No wonder these crimes are so prevalent and no one does anything about them. I am Australian and out of all the reported rape crimes only 7% get convicted. Really appalling statistics! In Hong Kong, currently popular legal physical (non-online) gambling would be horse-racing football and mark-six (a kind of lucky draw for numbers). Of course, there are many more different ones online.
However, the responsible organization (Hong Kong Jockey Club) closed down all the branches since COVID-19. There is a short period in between that it was re-opened, and many gamblers grasped the time to go in to refill or retrieval their accounts' money.
Unluckily, under social distancing rule, race course is banned for entry even for horse owners.
As a citizen, I can feel how broken hearts these horse racing gamblers are. And with time of few months, I feel that horse racing is falling out of colour.
Besides, football legends all over the world is closing as well. And bars for alcohol are all closed down by law too.
Of course, there is also Majong. Yet, shops providing these are also closed.
That's why I feel that people may shift their attention to others under COVID-19.

What can we do to make our students more careful when it comes to basic and core subjects in Nursing? What can we do to enrich students' experience in the clinical settings to become more conducive and achieve the learning objectives? What can we do to make our students become more sensitive to patient needs, the implicit as well explicit ones?
Dear Colleagues
I would like to share with my experience and see whether you similar or different experiences. Firstly, I have a very strong clinical orientation, especially in different critical care units. I still entertain myself with nurses at the clinical setting by asking and working with patients during my work day as a course coordinator to the clinical courses. I have many issues with the opportunities provided to our students to learn by observing and by participating, under guidance, in the process of caring for patients. Often, I experience very disappointing moments in my life, I rarely experience somewhere else, when I ask students about very simple, basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. Students do not have answers. I know for sure these topics have been elaborately explained to them by either me or my colleagues, in this this course or in that. But the result is usually the same; Sir, these topics have not been explained to us, you know". Well, indeed, I know that they were not honest, or perhaps they forgot. Hope to get some response.
Cheers, Lourance

Hi all,
For my thesis I'm looking into the effect of product placement in entertainment on the brand awareness of consumers. After collecting my data from questionnaires, I would like to perform an independent t-test to see if the mean of one group is significantly lower than the mean of another group. I've constructed two groups of 30 participants each (distinguished through a dummy variable). This dummy is therefore the independent variable, whereas my dependent variable has an interval nature, ranging from 0 to 7. What should I do with my data and what must i check in order to perform a reliable independent t-test.
Relevant answer
Answer
Thank you again for your quick reply! I was aware that it would have been better to not use a dummy, but since I am running short on time I will not be able to gather another 60 participants for a revised data set. I've altered my hypothesis in a directional manner. The variable of attitude towards product placement is gathered before exposure, so it will not give any issues I think. Hayes PROCESS is not accessible in STATA, so I'll export my data to SPSS and will try to run the analysis.

Original research articles are published by commercial and society journals with a lot of effort and reasonable finances, no doubt. In the end, these organizations earn a decent profit in the first five years of publication and release through internet. Nonetheless, the research organizations also invest a lot of money, effort and intellectual accomplishment for initiating, creating, producing and publication of this new knowledge for their own, country and the world society upliftment. The creators may, however, generate some profit from patents and restrictive transfer of technology. At the same time, a massive research and knowledge is created by a large majority of researchers without much profitability. Such research mostly becomes a basis for development of salable technology, usable basic knowledge, entertainment material, luxury, leisure resources, etc. But the commercial journals would restrict free circulation of this research for at least half-a-century, until the society either forgets about it or treats as obsolete. In this scenario, the society and the original creator of the knowledge suffer the most, for no fault of theirs. Logically, copyright law should have been amended long back to correct this loss of information already generated. What is the view of researchers on this, has never been asked. Please give your views in order to advise the governments on this aspect. Link
Relevant answer
Answer
There is little economic justification for the present system of allowing private publishing houses to lock publicly financed knowledge behind a pay wall and to keep it there for decades.
Copyrights in relation to literature published in academic journals in most cases are held by corporate publishing houses. Elsevier is an example. Yet the value of these copyrights derives overwhelmingly from the cost of the underlying research - and that cost generally is funded either publicly or by charitable endowment. These last mentioned funding sources also finance most of the cost of the peer review process.
Users of content in academic journals are not limited to persons affiliated with universities. Private scholars, researchers and technologists also rely on that knowledge. Moreover, universities are very unevenly financed both globally as well as within countries. For example, few African universities are funded above the median level for universities in Germany. The present copyright system may be criticized also on the basis that it operates as a structural limitation on access to knowledge in less wealthy countries.
I think there is a strong argument for limiting the duration of new copyrights applicable to (partly) publicly financed academic research to one year only.

I have proposed a session within Architectural Acoustics at the Inter-Noise in Chicago, USA, August 26-29, 2018. The organizers have given an initial approval to proceed.
The Session topic would be 5.14, Acoustical Standards and Guidelines as Basis of Design for Large Mixed-use Urban Development.
Final approval is pending sufficient interest in the topic, based on number of papers to be presented. As (provisional) Chair, I wish to invite your paper on acoustical standards and guidelines. Unfortunately, the invitation does not include any economic support to attend the Conference. It is intended to be an acknowledgement of your scientific or engineering achievements and a venue for additional contributions to the area of Acoustics, Noise and Vibration for architecture and urban planning.
The topic seeks to discuss acoustical, noise, vibration and/or environmental noise design criteria or regulatory standards for multi-building or multi-facility developments, re-developments or infrastructure development in the vicinity of existing urban development. This could include institutional, corporate or industrial campus planning and design, roadway or rail surface or underground design and construction, or other renovation and modernization within urban core areas.
For example, acoustical criteria and design guidelines as Basis of Design (BoD) for developments that include industrial plus office facilities on a common campus, or for residential, retail, dining and entertainment venues in a single municipal planned unit development or sub-division, or an urban redevelopment which includes office buildings, central plant (for multiple facilities), conference center/auditoria, outdoor entertainment venue, museum, child care facilities, and/or other facilities on a phased multi-block area. Considerations for transit, rail or roadway tunnels below buildings could be discussed. Design and construction standards need to consider acoustical needs of occupants, environmental considerations for emitted sound and for noise intrusions (either crossing property boundaries), compatibility with municipal or other jurisdiction building codes, development standards or regulations and appropriate mix of new architecture with older or historic structures.
Would you have an interest in this session, and could you author a paper for presentation? IINCE Inter-Noise ’18 abstracts are due March 12, 2018.
Information about the conference may be found at: https://internoise2018.org . I will extend formal invitations later, depending on your expression of interest.
If you are unable to join this session or do not feel like it is within your area of professional interest, I would also be pleased to accept your referral to another practitioner or senior researcher whom you may believe to have valuable information to contribute to this topic.
Than you for your consideration,

I’ve posted a paper here: “A hypothesis on the nature of light” that has interesting and testable implications regarding quantum entanglement.
The hypothesis that light is at absolute rest, and that the apparent motion of light is the reflection of an observer's own motion in time, has been shown in the hypothesis to resolve the wave/particle paradox, to make intelligible the apparent non-local behavior of light, and its status as an absolute and limiting velocity. The nature of four-dimensional motion has been shown to make apparent characteristics of light such as wavelength, coherence, polarity, interference, and simultaneity more comprehensible as manifestations of the motion of mass, rather than light. These theoretical resolutions might be expected to argue for its superiority over the common-sense belief in the nature of light, but that has not been seriously entertained to date. It is my hope that the proposed experiment here can confirm it, and lead to further experiments to better understand the motion of mass in time.

Answer
Hello Ilian
Thank you for responding. Regarding your comment specifically about the proposed experiment, I'm not aware of a previous experiment that is sufficiently accurate, or using light with low-enough energy, to discriminate "simultaneity" at less than a wavelength; without my hypothesis, there has been no reason to expect a half wavelength difference.
Regarding your objections and general questions about my hypothesis, every massive body moves in time parallel with every other, varying only by their relative motion (and by acceleration); motion in time being 4-dimensional, I believe it is impossible to fully conceptualize, but I show by means of several diagrams in the paper that motion in time is a continuous radiation from one point in space and concentration on another. And I show with several diagrams how the double-slit experiment works in terms of the hypothesis and without paradox; I can't explain it without graphic support and preliminary explanation; but I welcome your objections and comments after reading the paper.

My project is to create and Entertainment Education program with the audience of 15-19 y o males in suburban America for the purpose of providing strategies to avoid internet addictions and risky behaviors such as distracted driving.
I want to know the beliefs, attitudes, and preceptions around what is cool, popular behavior for boys 15-19, primarily mid to high SES, predom white. What motivates them to use media and why? What would motivate them to NOT engage in media? What incentivizes them? I do not know the minds of the 2017male 15-19 and any tips on their value system would be appreciated. So far, I know sex and getting a car are on the top of their list!

When designing an ad, advertisers have a lot of choices in terms of ad execution. For example, they can choose from different types of appeal, vary the length or number of words in a business, or choose to include music or celebrity ads. There are many aspects of executions that can vary in advertising, and operational variables have stimulated much research. While additional research is needed, it is clear that two aspects of implementation are taking
The additional importance of advertising in the new digital media: interaction and entertainment value.

The impact of E-commerce on the entertainment industry is enormous Nigeria for example, though classiffied as a developing country artists, managers and producers are employing this device to increase their visibility as well as market their products. Music can be purchased digitally online as well as ordered in physical forms. Independent artists are able to sell their music through sites like CDbaby, itunes, sportify and other local online music distribution sites while you can also purchase tickets for concerts, comedy shows online. The film industry is also not left out as Nollywood is now largely distributed and marketed online:major example is through youtube channels and collaborations between film makers and these online channels like irokotv, ibakatv. olekutv etc been hosted on youtube. Michelle,
I think that gamification learning works best for basic and intermediate learners, who are instrumentally motivated.  The more advanced learner is, the more the learner will be integratively motivated and want to know the "why" not just the "what."  This more detailed analysis is harder to provide via game learning.

There are a number of possible ways to use social media to benefit learning in the classroom, but do the entertainment and social qualities/values also inhibit learning and focus.  It is too tempting to "also" check social media for other reasons in an educational context?  Do students have enough self-control or discipline? I'm not sure adults do (smile).
Is it possible to use a tool that is designed for both entertainment/social reasons BUT can also be used for learning?
Relevant answer
Answer
Yes it's interesting to see that how we can handle the social media in the education system. I agree with @Emad that there should be a balance between control and freedom. We have to take all the positive things available. I have gone through the web and found few articles and this one I found  good: http://mashable.com/2013/08/18/social-media-teachers/#nHVtnD4hOZqI

It has been consistently argued in Latin America that telenovelas have helped in shaping some social debates concerning women. An international example is Yo soy Bety, la fea, in which a smart but not very appealing woman needs to overcome stereotypes in order to succeed. There are various articles and even a book on the topic.
Furthermore, Martin-Barbero and others have argued for the centrality of telenovelas in shaping important social issues in Latin America.

I am carrying out a study on the influencing factors in terms of characteristics of the content communicated by the company (i.e. posting type, media type, etc.) on its FB fanpage, over the level of brand popularity/consumer interaction interaction with branded content (measured in terms of likes, comments and shares). In particular, I found that most studies classyfing "content type" in terms of informational/functional value vs entertainment/hedonic value using the User&Gratification theory to explain why consumers have different media-usage patterns. Any idea on different type of classification of content type on social media?

Hi, Agostino:
As we know, companies’ escalating investment in social media—in particular, in Facebook—has become reality. Most firms still do not see social networks as a vehicle for cultivating and winning customer loyalty, but rather as a resource for creating brand awareness.Although many managers recognize that Facebook Fans represent a marketing opportunity, there has been little research into the nature of different Fan types! Please take a look at the following recent research studies:
1.This study Wallace, Buil, Chernatory, & Hongan(2014) explored a typology of Fans, drawn from a sample of 438 individuals who "Like" brands on Facebook. Fans' brand loyalty, brand love, use of self-expressive brands, and word of mouth (WOM) for Liked brands were used to suggest four Fan types: the "Fan"- atic, the Utilitarian, the Self-Expressive, and the Authentic. The authors argued that the results of this exploratory study highlight the value of cluster analysis as a strategy for identifying different Fan types and provide insights to prompt further research into Facebook Fan types!
2. In another study (Gabmoa & Goncalves (2014) discovered that Facebook enhances the relations that increase loyalty via trust, customer satisfaction, perceived value, and commitment. And these relations are stronger for fans of the brand than for non-fans, and suggest that customer satisfaction is the strongest determinant of loyalty.!

Henna, I don't think that the play cant be considered as being gender biased. For one,it has a very very strong female character in the form of bari Sarkar. Second, the younger lead is a confident, vocal woman who is in control of her life and circumstances. The idea of marrying again and again for a male child is also shown in a very negative light. All in all, I think that the playwrite must be believer in girl power rather than otherwise.

Ever since I was introduced to the basic principles of economics, I was told and made to believe that all economic decision making agents are rational. Despite its essence in the mainstream arguments, this assumption is far from being true in the entertainment industry where emotions serve as the key signals for doing or not something. From economic point of view, this industry mobilizes huge amount of capital in both developed and developing countries alike. The speed of money is also arguably highest in this sector.
I was wondering if there have been formal and rigorous studies conducted to explain the behavioral whereabouts of people in the entertainment industry.

Exactly... especially that in the last 20-30 years a special topic called "entertainment economics" or "emotional economics", where decisions are made rather a haphazard way...It is the principle of "post-modern" marketing or similar studies...and the worst is still ahead of us!!!
