You raise some very interesting questions. My brief reaction is as follows. When Indian speakers use phrases such as "your good name", I do not think they are deliberately retaining features from their L1. It probably happens unconsciously. When, for example, speakers from India or Nigeria or Singapore use English it is unlikely that they will conform exactly with the norms of UK or US English. This is a positive thing, in my view. Varieties of English used in the above countries (and in many others) have features that signal the identity of the speakers. As long as such features do not cause miscommunication, there is no issue. Indeed, one might say that the many national/regional varieties of English add to the charm and colour of the language as it is variously used worldwide.

The points are self-explanatory (please excuse the typo in the screenshot), but as the risk of voicing an unpopular view, I'd like to hear what the community thinks about translation software programs in terms of their pros and cons, and the need (if any) for them.

I see your point. The discussion you started with the AI tool is very intersting. As far as my experience in the legal field is concerned, I can say that unassisted machine-driven work is always disappointing. AI gives often rise to instances of hallucinations. Moreover, it is not generally capable of proposing correct equivalents, given the many nuances arising from different legal traditions and systems. Therefore, I always suggest using AI or machine translation together with other tools, such as corpora. There are scholars who proposed APE (automated post-editing), whereby machine-driven translations are automatically post-edited by using machine-learning alghorithms which are trained to detect and correct errors (do Carno et al. 2020),
In your images, if I remember well, the chatbot argues that it is able to grasp language subtleties. However, at the time being (as regards the English-Italian language pair), chatbots are not capable of rendering puns or playwords. There are studies in this regard. Some scholars managed to develop a CAT tools that renders puns from German into English (and vice-versa) (Kolb and Miller 2022). If you ask a chatbot to render a pun, it fails dramatically. In September 2024, I prompt ChatGPT and Gemini to perform the following: a man is seeing a photo with a woman pulling the cord of a tower bell. That man does not remember or recognise the woman and says "um, doesn't ring the bell". Translate the statement in quotes into Italian and maintain the pun. The result was a disaster. I haven't checked now, maybe things have changed.

As a language expert , I discovered to a certain extent that if we must be able to write and communicate our researches over the globe, that is to have a larger readership all over the world , then we must be ready to write or translate and post such research outputs in a language globally accessible and understandable, which i think, might be English language.
For example, when you post on ResearchGate in your language I wont understand , so wont be able to read your work or recommend or cite your work.

History of English:
How English Changed from a Synthetic Language (Many Suffixes)
to an Analytic Language (Fewer Suffixes), and
How English Has Become the “Lingua Franca” of the Modern World
In discussing the History of English, we must consider such terms as assimilation, dissimilation, umlaut, ablaut, Grimm's Law, Verner's law, and in the case of Old English becoming Middle English and Modern English, language typology (synthetic languages vs. analytic languages), a syllable-timed language becoming a stress-timed language, the loss of suffixes, development of final schwa, and finally development of "silent e," and the Great English vowel shift. I would like to start a discussion about how and why languages change.

First, find in related articles but If you're unable to find a specific questionnaire related to your research topic in articles, there are several other places you can look for relevant questionnaires:
  1. Academic Databases: Google Scholar: Search for articles related to your research topic. Sometimes, authors include appendices or supplementary material with questionnaires or scales used in their studies. PubMed, PsycINFO, or JSTOR: These databases host peer-reviewed articles, many of which may include questionnaires or provide references.
  2. Research Repositories: Open Science Framework (OSF): Researchers often upload study materials, including questionnaires, to OSF. ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research): This platform offers access to datasets and research instruments, including questionnaires used in social science research.
  3. Books on Methodology or Your Research Topic: There are books specifically focused on research methods within certain fields that often provide sample questionnaires or scales that you can adapt for your study. For example, in psychology, books on psychometrics often provide established scales.
  4. Ask Experts or Research Networks:ResearchGate: A platform where you can directly ask researchers for access to instruments they may have used in their work. LinkedIn or Academic Forums: Many researchers share their tools or provide suggestions in academic or professional groups.
  5. Use Pre-existing Questionnaires:If your research topic involves common constructs (e.g., mental health, satisfaction), you may be able to find a well-established questionnaire used by others in your field, such as the Beck Depression Inventory or the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale. You can often find them referenced in papers and modify them according to your specific needs.
  6. Create Your Own Questionnaire:If you cannot find a suitable questionnaire, you could consider creating your own. Start by reviewing existing research to identify key variables and common measurement approaches, then adapt or design questions that align with your research objectives.

As a referee for some humanities journals, I sure don't want to spend time correcting typos. If there are too many typos or grammatical infelicities I'll just refer the matter back to the editor, who will decide whether to reject the article or ask the author to resubmit after having the article proofed. Unfortunately not all journals have the staff or resources to thoroughly screen articles before sending them to referees. I have noticed some journals that do publish articles riddled with typos; such journals are no credit to their editors and authors and are not considered respectable.

I find it sad that new African authors are beginning to inundate Afro-Literary-Space with foreign language bias, challenging African readers and writers to learn proper English, with the belief that their books will attain a higher readership. They are probably convinced by the argument that Achebe became big because he was the first to 'sell' Africanness in the English language. Now that the product is old, they probably believe that it is high time to ditch Achebe's African English and write the real thing. I suspect that this might be the reason why Africans are trying to use actual English in their stories or novels. An example is Bleeding Stubs (Besong). While his writing entices all of us with its humour, depth and intrigue, the earlier we oppose him, the better it will be for African literature. I hope you guys have some advice as to where I'm coming from.
Relevant answer
Answer
Why should you guys control the direction of your writing literature? Every author is an individual, working with a style that they enjoy most. The moment to put an agenda in language or writing, it becomes dead and controlled. That is why the 1962 conference Achebe, Thing'o, Wali, Obi, etc had was not too helpful.

The English language is no longer just a necessity in academia but also in daily life. A better understanding of English opens numerous local and international opportunities. As we all know, English is a universal language. In fact, many job requirements include proficiency in English. This sparked my curiosity to study English more deeply, particularly in the context of southern Thailand. This study will enhance my knowledge and understanding of how English has evolved and its usefulness to Thai people.

My suggestion would be that you could carry out research into young learners' attitudes to learning English versus learning other foreign languages, such as Chinese. Survey students aged, say, 11-18 and find out which languages they are motivated to learn, and why. There could be implications for language policies in Thailand.

I am wondering which term is more appropriate for use in titles when discussing a group within a larger category: 'among' or 'in'?
For example:
'Prevalence of sleep disorders among children with autism'
'Prevalence of sleep disorders in children with autism'
Could you explain the difference between using 'among' and 'in' in such contexts and advise which option is more suitable for title usage?
Relevant answer
Both "among" and "in" can be appropriate in titles when discussing a group within a larger category, but the choice depends on the specific context and emphasis of the title. Here's a brief overview of the optimal usage for each term:
Among:
Use "among" when you want to emphasize the idea of being part of a larger group or set, but not necessarily confined to it. This term suggests that the group you're referring to is integrated or exists within a broader context.
Example title: "Patterns of Communication Among Adolescents in Urban Schools"
In:
Use "in" when you want to emphasize the idea of being contained or located within a specific category or context. This term suggests a more specific or bounded relationship between the group and the larger category.
Example title: "Factors Affecting Academic Achievement in Students with Disabilities"
In summary, consider the nuances of meaning and emphasis you want to convey in your title when choosing between "among" and "in." If you want to highlight the group's integration within a larger context, use "among." If you want to emphasize their specific location or relationship within a category, use "in."

The refugee classroom is likely a multilingual or plurilingual one. In my experience, English language instructors (volunteer and paid alike) are monolingual. Thinking about the concept of translanguaging, or the practice of utilizing an entire set of language skills in the process of learning an additional language, and the tendency for ESL classrooms to hold an English-only pedagogical approach, I wonder how many monolingual instructors could use a new, more inclusive approach to English instruction that includes the use of the adult learners' language repertoire.
Relevant answer

I think that it depends on the language of the people learning English.
If the native language is Spanish or a Native American language, a lot of US citizen teachers are probably bilingual. There are languages spoken in other countries that likely have very few people in the US who are fluent in both that language and English.
I think you raise interesting questions about the traditional "all English during the class" approach. But it may still be contingent on having people capable of speaking both languages.

JEWISH HUMOR
In 1978, psychologist Samuel Janus conducted a study which found that although Jews constituted only 3 percent of the U.S. population, 80 percent of the nation’s professional comedians were Jewish. The percentage of comedians is less today not because there are fewer Jewish comedians, but because in response to ethnic and gender identity movements, many new comedians have come from groups that were previously under-represented. Belle Barth, Danny Kaye, and other Jewish comedians substituted Yiddish for English when they wanted to fool English-speaking censors with risque jokes.
In Mel Brooks’ The Producers there is a play within the play called “Springtime for Hitler.” Dozens of dancers, singers, actors and pantomimists of every race and shape audition for the role of Hitler. The show’s opening production number culminates in the formation of a slowly turning swastika. The pillars at the back of the set are being lowered to a horizontal position and transformed into cannons. After seeing a bizarre interview on TV, Reiner turned to Brooks and said, “I understand you were actually at the scene of the Crucifixion.”
Brooks responded, “Ooooooh, boy!” and then continued in character saying that yes, he had known Christ. “He was a thin lad, always wore sandals. Came into the store but never bought anything.”
Henry Spalding says that much Jewish humor is in the form of honey-coated barbs at the people and things Jews love the most. Jews verbally attack their loved ones and their religion, but with the grandest sense of affection. Their jokes are “a kiss with salt on the lips, but a kiss nevertheless.” Dolf Zillman says that Jewish humor exhibits two antithetical statures: disparagement and superiority. This antithesis can be seen in the following joke:
The Israeli Knesset is lamenting all of the challenges that Israel faces.
One member of the Knesset suggests that Israel go to war against the United States. Other members say, “What?” “Such a war wouldn’t last 10 minutes.” “I know. I know. But then we would be a conquered country and the Americans would send us aid. They would build roads and hospitals and send food and agricultural experts.” “But,” said another member of the Knesset, “What if we win?”
Jewish stereotypes include the shrewd businessman, the overbearing mother, the Jewish American Princess, and the persecuted Jew. Arthur Naiman illustrates the stereotype of the overbearing Jewish mother with a story about a psychiatrist who tells a Jewish mother that her son has an Oedipus complex. The mother responds, “Oedipus, schmoedipus, just so long as he loves his mother.”
Yiddish is the language of sarcasm and irony. It is also the language of Jewish culture. Richard Fein’s experiences were typical:
“Yiddish was in my bones, but hidden from my tongue. I did not know Yiddish as a language, but I felt reared in its resonance, pitch, and tone. I recognized a few words uttered in isolation, grasped nothing of its structure, but felt washed in its rhythms. Although I could not speak Yiddish, it was not a foreign language. I never possessed it, but sensed it possessing me.”
Here is a sampling of Yiddish words and expressions:
Bobehla: “little grandmother” term of endearment
Chutzpah: gall or incredible nerve
Ganeff: a thief or mischievous prankster
Kibitz: kidding around
Mishmash: flagrant disorder or confusion
Nebish: a loser or sad sack
Nosh: a snack
Schmaltz: “chicken fat” sentimentality
Schmear: bribing or greasing the palm
Schmooz: a heartfelt visit
Shlemiel: clumsy or inept person
Shlep: carrying things (including oneself) in an undignified way
Shlimazl: fall guy or luckless oaf
Shnorrer: a beggar
In The Joys of Yiddish, Leo Rosten says that Yiddish syntax also enters the English Language:
Fancy-schmancy
kvetch
maven
mazel tov
tanz
Oy Vey!
Get lost.
You should live so long!
Who needs it?
He should excuse the expression.
It shouldn’t happen to a dog.
On him it looks good.
Other Yiddish patterns include virus schmirus, and a real no-goodnik.

Hello! I am a young researcher and my specialization is "Land management, cadastres and land monitoring" (in Russian it is "ВАК 25.00.26"). I want to publish my research in Scopus and WoS magazines, but I don not know anybody in my University, who have experience with journals on the profile of land management and cadastres (most of scientists have been published in journals on economics or geoinformatics, but not on land management). So, do you know any scientific magazines (not predatory publishing) in this specialisation? Magazines on socio-economic geography and geoinformatics (German-language and English-language editions) will also be suitable.

I am a graduate student and I am wondering if anyone has literacy strategies (and any other type of strategies and best practices) that have helped English Language Learners in classes that are not ELA and not ESL? How have you been able to help these students in your classes? What tips do you have regarding them?
If you have been an ELL yourself, what has helped you and/or what do you wish would have been done instead with you?
Relevant answer
Answer
Please find some literacy strategies that may be useful for English Language Learners (ELLs) in non-ELA classes. Here are some tips and strategies:
Provide visuals to support language comprehension: Students who are not proficient in English may have difficulty understanding complex vocabulary and concepts. Providing visuals such as diagrams, charts, and graphs can help students understand the material better.
Pre-teach key vocabulary: Pre-teaching key vocabulary words before a lesson can help ELLs better understand new concepts. This can be done through word walls, flashcards, or pre-teaching activities.
Use graphic organizers: Graphic organizers, such as KWL charts or concept maps, can help ELLs organize their thoughts and understand new concepts visually.
Incorporate peer-to-peer learning opportunities: Pairing ELLs with native English speaking peers can provide students with opportunities to practice their language skills and learn from each other.
Encourage the use of bilingual resources: When available, bilingual materials, such as textbooks and dictionaries, can help ELLs bridge the gap between their first language and English.
Create a welcoming classroom environment: Creating a welcoming classroom environment can help ELLs feel more comfortable and confident in their language abilities. This can be done through positive reinforcement, cultural awareness, and support from the teacher.
Provide extra support: Providing ELLs with extra support, such as after-school tutoring or additional resources, can help them succeed in classes where they may struggle.
Overall, incorporating these strategies can help ELLs succeed in non-ELA classes and feel more confident in their language abilities. It is important to also be patient and understanding of ELLs as they navigate a new language and culture.

The peculiarities of neologisms' use are determined not only by the semantic compe-tence of the speaker. It is not only responsible for the correlation of the sign and the wordbut also the pragmatic one, which provides a permanent connection between the speakerand the sign. Pragmatic parameters of neologisms most fully manifest in Internet discourse, characterized by constantly updating lexical vocabulary.
This feature is since Internet dis-course is inherently a heterogeneous phenomenon that integrates the characteristics of other types of discourse and covers all spheres of society. Therefore, functional analysis of discursive neologisms is an essential aspect of studying neologisms

Article Title: Review of IPSASs Compliance in Sovereigns’ Financial Reporting Reviewer report Date: 26 December 2022 Thank you for the opportunity to review this article. The topic of the study is indeed interesting and useful. It presents an original idea of how to assess the extent of compliance with the IPSASs. However, I regret to suggest that the article is rejected at this stage, so that the author(s) is given ample time to consider the work that needs to be done. As it stands, the article has three major defects: The first is the quality of the language used. I empathise with the author(s) that, when the English language is foreign, it can be difficult to use especially for academic writing. I’m afraid that I found the majority of the paper barely understandable due to this problem. Secondly, the article is very long. The study deals with various aspects and lacks focus. It seems more like a mini-thesis, rather than an academic article. Perhaps the author(s) could consider breaking down the study into a number of articles. For example, page 4: ‘This situation prompted us to investigate the extent public capital expenditures were properly captured in sovereign entities financial statements in compliance to IPSASs or otherwise’ – just this aspect of capital expenditure would provide a more feasible and straightforward objective. Similarly, you could choose to just focus on heritage (section 2.2.6) or natural resources (s2.2.7). Alternatively, you could limit the scope of your study by excluding heritage and natural resources. This would simplify matters for you. Thirdly, the study lacks proper referencing. The article often includes sweeping statements that are not referenced, let alone justified. For example in Section 1.4 you state that: ‘The rendition of improper, inaccurate and unrealistic financial statements in many countries encourages sub-optimal public resources management, and poor public governance.’ – How did you arrive at such a conclusion? Is it from your readings? Where are the references?

In all, it is an abusive for whoever he is to have made such derogatory remarks to an author with six degrees (two PhDs, three M.Scs and B.Sc (Econs). I received a commissioned research grant that was reviewed by a technical board of about 24 eminent persons and seven member academic panel. That some person a yellow coloured (no one is white in colour) does not confer superior understanding of English in any case.

‘Entrance to courses is frequently restricted by high prerequisites in terms of prior academic performance (Arendt, Lange, & Wakefield, 1986; Crawford-Lange, 1985; Lange, 1987). This elitism is curious when one considers that it operates under the assumption that some students cannot learn a second language when virtually all students have achieved proficiency in a first language (Crawford & McLaren 2004, p. 141).
Should Higher Education institutes in native English-speaking countries request from Non-native English Speakers (NNES) English proficiency requirements for entry without mandating the same proficiency tests for Native English Speakers (NES)?
Some Higher Education institutes in native English-speaking countries require proof of proficiency from Non-native English-speaking individuals for entrance. There is no question that students need to communicate in the target culture language. However, these institutes enforce strict IELTS band scores for each language skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) from NNES but do not mandate that NES undertake the proficiency test. This assumes that NES are naturally skilled in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, whereas, in reality, not all NES have strong writing or reading skills.
Arguments to consider:
1) Some NNES might have exam anxiety, which puts them at a disadvantage when taking English proficiency tests.
2) Some topics in English proficiency tests are specific to NES cultures that NNES may be unfamiliar with.
3) NNES should have the opportunity to be accepted regardless of their English proficiency scores with options for prerequisite courses for improvement.
4) Different cultures have different writing styles. Language Tests assessors might not be familiar with these cultural differences, which may affect grading.

Inquiry-based learning is a kind of instruction that places a premium on discovering and investigating topics on the part of the students. Several studies have shown that inquiry-based learning can significantly enhance Primary Years Programme (PYP) pupils' proficiency in English.
With PYP children studying English as a second language, for instance, one study revealed that inquiry-based learning was connected with increased reading and writing skills. A total of 150 PYP pupils from a Hong Kong elementary school were split into two groups, one using an inquiry-based approach to education and the other using the more traditional method of a teacher giving a series of lectures. Students in the inquiry-based learning group made substantial progress in reading, writing, and using English in social and academic settings.
Another study conducted on PYP pupils in a bilingual Spanish school indicated that inquiry-based learning was helpful in fostering linguistic growth. 67 PYP students were involved in the research, and they were all given bilingual inquiry-based lessons. The students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as their proficiency in both languages, all improved.
Overall, the results of these research support the idea that inquiry-based learning is a promising strategy for enhancing PYP pupils' command of the English language. It's worth noting, however, that the success of inquiry-based learning may hinge on things including the quality of instruction, the depth of student engagement, and the accommodations made for kids with special needs. Since the best conditions for integrating inquiry-based learning in PYP classrooms have yet to be determined, more research is required.

Do not assign students to groups. You should work with groups as they are (intact classes).
If you have the choice of assigning students from the center to experimemtal and control groups, you can use randomization. Howver, by randomly assigning participants, your design will be true experimental, not quasi-exp.
As for the comparability, you can do it by comparing their scores in the pretest (compare the means for the two groups). On a final bote, their means should be equal.

Hello,
I would like to know what place grammar occupies in the current approaches of the teaching of foreign languages.  I think that there is not real communication in any language if grammar is not used appropriately. I would like to know how the communicative approach to languages sees this issue.
I will be very grateful if you comment on this.

My question is connected to rather unclear point of error correlation that many scholars encounter while conducting their SEM (structural equation modeling) analysis. It is a pretty often when scholars report procedures of correlating the error terms to enhance the overall goodness of fit for their models. Hermida (2015), for instance, provided an in-depth analysis for such issue and pointed out that there are many cases within social sciences studies when researchers do not provide appropriate justification for the error correlation. I have read in Harrington (2008) that the measurement errors can be the result of similar meaning or close to the meanings of words and phrases in the statements that participants are asked to assess. Another option to justify such correlation was connected to longitudinal studies and a priori justification for the error terms which might be based on the nature of study variables.
In my personal case, I have two items with Modification indices above 20.
lhs op rhs mi epc sepc.lv sepc.all sepc.nox
12 item1 ~~ item2 25.788 0.471 0.471 0.476 0.476
After correlating the errors, the model fit appears just great (Model consists of 5 latent factors of the first order and 2 latent factors of the first order; n=168; number of items: around 23). However, I am concerned with how to justify the error terms correlations. In my case the wording of two items appear very similar: With other students in English language class I feel supported (item 1) and With other students in English language class I feel supported (item 2)(Likert scale from 1 to 7). According to Harrington (2008) it's enough to justify the correlation between errors.
However, I would appreciate any comments on whether justification of similar wording of questions seems enough for proving error correlations.
Any further real-life examples of wording the items/questions or articles on the same topic are also well-appreciated.

Hi everyone
Language editing is a major concern for authors who do not have English as their primary language. Problems with grammar, language, and syntax can result in the rejection of manuscripts from international biomedical Journals. The editors and experts often recommend professional editing which can sometimes cost hundreds of dollars. This is not feasible nor affordable for the majority of authors and researchers based in developing countries who do not have sufficient funds or institutional support.
Many online language editing softwares are now available but the better ones have limited functionality for the free version for example Grammarly.
Please share your experience of using online language editing software with their and strengths and shortcomings. I have been Trinka for 4 months now with excellent results and would highly recommend it
It is the world’s first grammar and language enhancement tool is custom-built for academic & technical writing. Its standout features are that it works with the author and goes beyond the grammar and spellcheck to ensure holistic language enhancement.

Our team was conducting assessment of functional independence. We came across a scale in English language which has been developed and validated. Our study population speaks Hindi, the major language in India. We had followed the steps of translation and cross-cultural validation mentioned by the original copyright holders of the scale. Different teams conducted forward and back-translation in a blinded manner. We compared the back-translated scale with original scale and made appropriate changes with mutual discussion. Then we used the translated tool among a scientifically selected sample. Now during publication, we are being told that we also needed to collect test-retest data on a subsample of participants as well as another subsample of inter-rater reliability data. It has been more than a year since our data collection finished. Do we need to enroll new participants to collect test-retest and inter-rater reliability data?

I think the reviewer is making unreasonably specific requests. Instead, I think it would be fair to ask that you give evidence for the overall reliability and validity of your translated instrument. The most common standard for assessing reliability is coefficient alpha, so I would calculate and report that. As for validity,
I would recommend a "construct validity framework" where you assess convergent, divergent, and predictive validity.
In your letter of reply, you can thank the reviewer for pointing out the need to report issues of reliability and validity for your translated scale, without getting into the specifics of the original request.

Long ago, I was a polish kid with an open mind and a wish for learning new things about the world. I was always curious about distant places and exotic lands. I love maps and atlases. They are very useful tool, especialy at school, but they also bring so much joy for young readers. I cherish many beautifuly ilustrated books and encyclopedias given to me by my mum. She hoped to spark in me intrest to learn and to think about our world, its problems and hidden treasures. I enjoyed learning English too in my early childhood. Sometimes I enjoyed it much more than learning about my mother tongue! At some time, I was given a lesson by my Godmother to folow my personal interests by using English language. She said - "Do what you want, and read what you want, but read it in English!" And that's a secret. This is how I polish my English right now. I have still much to learn thow. I also keen on Tolkien and his works. He was a linguist, and he created magnificent world resembling one of my favourite epochs in history, the transistion time between Late Antiquity and so called Dark Ages. He introduced me to a world of ancient ethymologies, roots of words, and forgotten meanings. The marvelous odyssey of early germanic peoples, Saxons, Jutes and Angles seeking new home in Auld land of Brittania. From humble origins, as pirates, mercenaries and auxilaries from today Niedersachsen and Denmark, they have established petty kingdoms and so called English Heptarchy, and then, they have experienced truly heroic period led by Alfred the Great repelling pagan invasions. Gradually they united and developed their civilisation with a little help of the Normans :) Their world was transforming, jus as their language, reciving another wave of new words of romance origin. It is so fascinating! Now lets talk about a couple of words wich still retain their archaic meaning. Oxford for example, the name implies it was a river crossing. We have many place names ending with -shire, or -borough. Such words can tell us much about old administrative systems. We have place names with endings like -by, or -ville. We can see clearly that they have a foreign origin, Viking and Norman respectively. Lets talk about Newfoundland - it is so obvious it doesn't need any explanation at all. I could add many more examples. To sum up, there are plenty of reasons why Geography can help us understand language and culture of particular country. I hope my way too long text was just a little bit helpful to You. God bless You and stay healthy!
